Unable to play a DVD disc

I inserted a DVD disc into my computer and I can't seem to play it on iTunes. And why can't it be transferred to the Library just like any normal CD?

iTunes is not a DVD playing application. If your using Windows7 there is a chance it can do this itself, but PowerDVD is a (commercial) application that can do this.
Commerical DVDs are generally protected against copying and this is another reason why you cannot transfer it directly to iTunes.
There are ways using other software to transfer a DVD to iTunes but in most countries this is illegal. The UK is currently proposing legalising format shifting which in theory would then make it legal to use such software to copy a DVD in to iTunes.

  • After upgrading the Mountain Lion I am unable to play any DVD's

After upgrading my late 2009 iMac to Mountain Lion I am unable to play any DVD's.  When I put a DVD into the superdrive, it tries reading the disk and then it ejects it.  Is this problem related to the upgrade?

    Hmmm, this page:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564/apple-usb-superdrive
Does not list the iMac as one of the computers the SuperDrive runs with.
I assume you literally mean the USB SuperDrive in your statement above.

  • I cant play my dvd disc despite prompting me to change the region.

    Hi,
    As mentioned above
I guess i have set the region five times but everytime i would set the same region. (not sure if that counts altogether.)
now i bought a new movie dvd and when i insert it, it prompt me again to change. But when i had changed the regioin, it unable to play the disc. My Dvd player is of version 5.4.
    Need help
    Thanks

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set he region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • Unable to play burned DVD

    Hi,
I part-time video edit and my latest customer complained that the DVD I gave her couldn't be played in her DVD Player. I made the project using Final Cut Pro, exported it via Compressor and burned the .ac3 and .m2v in DVD Studio Pro.
I tried playing the burned DVD in a PC and found that I needed to download a codec in order to play the video. This is on an XP and goes the same on Vista. However, it plays fine in QT on a Mac.
I have 2 DVD players, the conventional one where it only plays DVDs and a newer one where it can read & play movies on thumbdrives/hard drives via USB too. On the newer one, the DVD plays just fine. However, on the older one, it doesn't. So I assume the customer's DVD player is similar to my older one which can't play my burned DVDs.
What is causing this problem and how do I solve it? My projects burned using Adobe Premiere Elements work fine. I'm using DVD-R printable.

How did you burn the ac3 and m2v file in DVD SP? Did you create tracks? Did you create menus? If your disc will not play in a stand alone DVD player then you did not author it correctly. A PC would only download a codec if it's seeing the disc as something other than a properly authored video DVD.

  • Dvd player 3.2 unable to play burned dvd-  Any suggestions?

    Hello all,
I'm trying to play a burned dvd movie on my dvd player 3.2, but the dvd player doesn't automatically start playing it. My ibook, 10.2.8, doesn't seem to be able to read it. However, I tried the dvd on a new Mac and it works.
Any suggestions on what to do, besides buying a new Mac? Thanks!

I can't find the "post new topic" so I'm choosing
"reply" and hoping someone can help.
The new topic button is at the root level of each forum (like iDVD 5 or iDVD 6) towards the upper left corner. You won't see it when you are looking at someone else's messages.
I have an iMac, 10.2.8, with a DVD Player 3.2 that
has been working fine for several years.
The last few weeks when I put in a commercially made
DVD, it won't play. It doesn't automatically show up
on the desktop, and when I manually open the DVD
Player, it doesn't read the disk although the program
opens without problem. This isn't happening to all
    commercial DVDs, but most.
This isn't happening to all commercial DVDs - Doesn't sound like a problem with Apple's DVD Player application - you may have a dirty lens in your DVD drive.

  • HELP!!! HD DVD can't play with DVD PLAYER

Made a DVD with final cut pro from Sony HDV camcorder, play well on Macbook pro but can not play on regular DVD PLAYER

That shouldn't surprise you.  DVD players can play DVDs, which are standard definition.  They will not play HD DVD discs.  For that you need a Mac or one of the (now obsolete) Toshiba HD DVD players.
Essentially, you have three options for delivering video on optical disc.:
DVD: standard definition content only.  Finalized disc will play in DVD players and most computers with DVD drives and player software installed.
HD DVD: an obsolete format that was abandoned by its developers after losing out to Blu-ray.  HD DVDs use the same DVD-5 discs as DVD, but will play HD  content when played in an HD DVD player (none currently being made) or in later model Mac computers.  HD DVD discs will NOT play in DVD players.
Blu-ray: Can play Blu-ray discs and DVD discs.  Blu-ray can contain both HD and SD content.  To create a Blu-ray disc, you'll need Blu-ray authoring software and a Blu-ray burner.  To view the disc, you'll need a Blu-ray player.  DVD players will not play Blu-ray discs.

  • Qosmio G30-153 HD DVD error message - Unable to play back

After 6 months of great HD DVDV viewing (well four actual playing times) I now am unable to play any HD DVD's but instead get a message saying "Unable to play back. Please restart the computer. event code: 6".
Have deleted Toshiba HD DVD programme and reloaded from 'Drivers and Tools' back-up CD but to no avail.
Audio CD's and std DVD's work ok, just not HD DVD's. Sometimes I get a black screen, the little control panel shows something iis playing .e. the indicater moves left to right, but no audio is heard.
Is the disc player components of these laptops prone to failure?
    Any advice gratefully accepted.

Same thing happened to my machine. Although "chronicles of Riddick" plays fine. I bought "Bourne" collection and get that error message on all 3 discs so I think it has to do with security coding on the DVD itself. I bought this machine for to be able to play these things.
Hope someone out there can help.

  • Unable to play Blu-Ray or DVD through MediaSmart on HDX 18

My drive has the Blu-Ray symbol on it, so I know it's supposed to have Blu-Ray capabilities, but every time I put a Blu-Ray OR DVD in, MediaSmart DVD pops up and says "No disc loaded in drive." However, I am able to run DVDs through Windows Media Player. So, what's wrong with my MediaSmart? Is there another way to play Blu-Rays?

I have been having this problem for close to 10 months (since I bought my HP laptop). I didn't care initially because I could use other players to play regular DVDs and CDs. I was in a fix when I tried to watch my first movie in Blu Ray disc. I tried multiple installs and re-installs but couldn't get it to work. I however got to a point where it would say the "Disc is ready, hit the play button", but when I hit the play button it just flashed the screen (adjusting screen display) for a second and then did nothing. I finally called HP support and they walked me through regular install and install as per their process. When the initial instructions didn't work, I on my own did two things while on call.
    1. I first Un-installed my antivirus software, just to make sure it doesn't interfere with any of the other activities being instructed by the support staff since they were related to drivers.
    2. I had a Divx player and converter installed in my machine. Just on random thought of driver conflicts I went ahead and un-installed all the Divx related software. It asked me for a restart and bingo. When the machine rebooted, HP mediasmart DVD was able to play the Blu Ray disc.
I don't know which of the un-installs did it. My guess is it probably was Divx or a combination of both. I then asked HP support to stop going through rest of the process. He advised me to update the BIOS and software for fingerprint device which I did and it solved another problem for me. I saw the whole movie without too many issues. Once issue I found was when I paused the play using keyboard and resumed the sound went away. I then had to close and restart the movie. Based on above experience, I would advice anyone else having same problems to first un-install all the free DVD/CD/Blu Ray player software from the machine, then proceed with un-installing antivirus (if necessary at all. You can install it back again). I haven't tried re-running the blu ray disc after re-installing the anitvirus. I will re-post any problem here if I find any issue. That would also nail down the culprit.
Hope this helps so some of you.

  • DVD-R discs will not play on DVD Player

The DVD-R discs I made will not play on DVD Player Version 4.0.
I transferred VHS to DVD-R using an RCA VHS/DVD Recorder. The discs played well in 3 different DVD players but will not play on my i-book.
    Please help?
    New At This
    i-book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

In a nutshell the problem is the fact that the Software used by the RCA recorder is for PC.
When recording DVD's the software that is available varys greatly.
Some of the top of the line software gives options to burn PC only, MAC only, and PC or MAC combined.
It was also brought to your attention to use VLC Player on your Mac the firmware that is used with this player will sometimes allow for playing DVD's that were burned on these VHS to DVD Burners.
Here are a few tips that affect reading and writing DVD. This link is only a small amount of what can and does affect, I suggest you do a Google search to learn all you can.

  • No audio on disc image or on DVDs played in DVD player

    Help, I'm stuck.
I have made several movies in iDVD and burned them successfully. They always played with no problem. Now I am trying to play them in the DVD player and there is no audio. There is also no audio when I make a disc image. And there is also no audio when I try to copy on of my movies back onto the disc utility. I am also not getting audio from commercial DVDs in the DVD player. All of these DVDs still work fine in my regular DVD player hooked to the tv.
    I have version 6.0.4
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
Most common origin is .mp3 .avi or other strange audio format - or -
    imported audio from iTunes.
Medicine: Copy out as audio .aiff then use this in the movie then to iDVD.
If the DiskImage doesn't play OK - don't waste to burn DVD discs from it.
    *OTHER THINGS*
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    Last resort:
from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!! I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive, emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option and I am up and running.

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc & burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

If you want to play material on a dedicated DVD Video hardware player, you must create a DVD video disc, and you must use a DVD authoring application. The software creates files that the DVD video player can play and will burn them to a recordable DVD disc. Examples of applications are:
Roxio Toast and iSky DVD Creator
Mac's used to be supplied with iDVD authoring software but Apple discontinued it in 2011.
Thanks for that.  Will need to check iSkysoft out.  I am in the process of looking for a VisualHub replacement/backup.  Especially when it comes to ease of use.  Toast is ok.  Just looking for something along the lines of VH.

  • Unable to play burned disc.

I know I am missing a minor step here.
I have correctly imported a movie from FCP to DVD Pro and moved it to the correct track...and then burned it. I can tell that the burn process is progressing as it should.
But when I insert the disc into my drive after it has burned (formatted) all I see is a black screen and when I click on 'menu' or 'play' I get a 'not permitted' notice.
I know that this movie has burned to the inserted disc correctly but I cannot play it back. I am missing a very minor step here.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Dan

Although I never received a response to this query I would like to offer some feedback as to what I found re this problem in case anyone also runs into it.
With the help of a friend we came to the conclusion after burning about 20 unsuccessful discs that it seems to be an issue with 'master templates' in FCP.
Here is what happened. I created a project (movie) in FCP with the intro having a 'master template' at the opening of the disc...in my case a water template. You can check them out.
It seems that exporting the finished project to DVD Pro although successful and playing it in DVD PRO was fine: burning the completed track to a DVD disc resulted in a 'not permitted' play. Even though the burn notice in DVD PRO said that the disc was "formatted successfully' and all appeared fine.
When we deleted the template from the track (back in FCP) it then did burn so that we could view it. Bear in mind that I have burned other projects with opening intro templates with no problems. However some templates (my friend says) are Volkswagens and some are Ferraris.
You have to be familiar with templates to know what I am talking about.
It seems that DVD PRO does not like all the FCP has to offer! We think!
But.....we still have not gotten to the bottom of this.
Apparently no one here has any thoughts on this? Which is also quite interesting.

DVD Player not responding when I insert a disc. The DVD menu doen not come on screen...not even a black video screen. In applications, the option under DVD is to automatically open DVD player. The disc plays fine on my old clamshell so I know the disc is good. Any ideas...thanks

    Hi b
Most probably You didn't use Verbatim DVD discs
    or not DVD-R
or burn speed x1 but may be x16
My worst scenario "No-Name DVD+RW and x16" and with less than 5Gb free space on
    internal hard disk.
*Quality of the DVD-disc depends on several things.*
    • I DON'T USE the function Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie - IT IS DESTRUCTIVE !!
Just drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window - then iDVD do the
rendering and so much better. Especially if there is photos in the movie.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk - should be about 25Gb when all material is imported
and structured. This for iDVD to work with - iDVD can't use an extern hard disk as scratch.
(less than 5Gb - result is most probably of no use at all)
    • Best Quality isn't Top - better is Best Performances (up to 60 min. movie)
    confused naming -
in iDVD'08 there is Pro Quality AND I like it. (and 120 min.)
    • Media brand - I use Verbatim
    • Type: IF SL DVDs -> DVD-R my choice no DVD+R or +/-RW
    • I save a Disc-Image and burn this at an as SLOW speed as possibly (eg x1) with Toast™
(Disc Util tool can also do this)
in iDVD’08 this can be set - not in previous versions AND IT IS IMPORTANT - Less errors and gives
a disk that plays on more type of players eg PC or Mac computer that are more selective than
    stand alone DVD-players.
    from Karsten:
    • Keep to same standard NTSC or PAL trough all steps
    from: Matti Haveri:
    • Is it jerky (=maybe some part of the workflow deinterlaced the footage -- iMovie can do this behind the users's back quite well!)
    • Or is it awfully jerky (=maybe the field dominance is wrong -- this happens very easily when importing upper field first stuff from MPEG).
This is what come's first to my mind.
    Yours Bengt W
