Unable to play .avi with Cinepak compression with Quicktime

I have multiple short .avi files that were created with a Cinepak compression. Before upgrading to Leopard, I had no problem playing these clips. After upgrading to Leopard, when I tried to view the clips through Quicktime, I receive the error "The movie could not be opened . Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -1.)". I was able to view the clips with iMovie '08, but when I tried to compile the movie and send the clips to either a .mov or .avi format from iMovie, I just got a blank screen. I assume that I am missing an important codec. Any suggestions?

See if any of the following are of any help:

  • Unable to play AVI files with Quicktime

    I installed Perian and the xvid codec but still cannot play all AVI videos in QT. Not really a problem since I have VLC. However it would be nice to be able to play AVI files in QT as well

    AVI container can accept a real mess of codecs, not all of which are provided in Perian.  Use a utility such as
    Media Info - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net - to get details of codecs used in multimedia
    to see which video codec is used and compare it with the list on Perian's web site.

  • Unable to Play Music on iPhone 5 with iOS6

    Hello,
    Recently, I'm unable to play any of my music on my iPhone 5 with iOS6.
    Symptoms:
    When I access the Music app, my listing of music starts scrolling rapidly. I have no control to stop it. Then it will stop scrolling. When I select a song to play, the app goes to the song screen, but then pops right back to the song listing screen.
    Have a look at the video at the link below to see exactly what is happening.
    I have not tried any troubleshooting, such as restores. I have tried hard setting the iPhone to no avail. Seems I may have to restore or rebuild from scratch to fix.
    Anyone else seeing this happen?

    The best way to solve this problem is by downloading VLC media player. You will find problem even installing Perian or QuickTime 7 because many videos will  not play in these media player. So to solve this problem download VLC from "http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html"

  • Unable to play .avi movie files

    I have finally found one of my beloved movies and downloaded it to my computer. Unfortunately, when I attempted to open it in Quicktime player, the sound was disabled. Every attempt I made at opening the movie, the sound was disabled. I tried Quicktime, Quicktime 7 and the DiVX player, but to no avail. It has prompted several times that I need to update my drivers and install the updates in order to make the movie function properly in my Quicktime player. Where do I get the updates for the drivers in order to make the .avi files function properly?

    Thank you in ten-fold! Happy New Year.

  • Unable to play newest (10/20/2010) Special Event keynote

    Hi!
    I'm unable to play the newest podcast keynote with my iPhone 4 IOS 4.1. It doesn't matter if I download it with the phones iTunes or my Mac's iTunes and then sync it. It just won't start playing on the phone but works fine on the Mac.
    Any resolutions or is the file corrupted?

    Hey everyone.
    I had the exact same problem as described above. Very annoying and kind of worrisome if you ask me. I figured out a simple solution. Here goes:
    - Hopefully you have Quicktime Player 7 still installed on your machine. I am running 10.6.4 with both Quicktime X and Quicktime Player 7 (Pro). I have found Quicktime Player 7 to be INCREDIBLY useful when X just does not do the job.
    -Get the podcast file onto your Desktop (or some other convenient place in the Finder)
    -Control click on it and select Open with --> Quicktime Player 7.
    -Then just go to File-->Export-->(name it whatever you want) and then select Movie to iPhone (or whatever device you want to sync it to).
    -It should import into iTunes as a Movie file. Then just sync.
    -Took about 30 minutes for me, but now I can watch it on my commute to work.
    -Again, I agree it should just work for god's sake. But hopefully this helps some of you.

  • Help with JNLP - Beginner with JNLP

    Hey guys, I am new here and was hoping someone might be able to help me understand what's going on with this JNLP hocus pocus.
    Basically, I'm just trying to deploy a very simple applet using a .jnlp file. I created the applet in Eclipse and it runs fine in the IDE. I set up my jnlp and html files pretty much exactly how the tutorial on Sun's website suggests, but my stupidity seems to prevent the applet from working inside a browser.
    The files I'm using are all in the same folder. They are:
    HiddenPrizePage.html
    HiddenPrizeTask.jar
    HiddenPrizeApplet.jnlp
    I created my jar using Export in Eclipse with no compression, with the "Export generated class files and resources" checkbox selected. The images folder contains all images used by the applet. The images folder is inside of src. The program is structured so that the logic and drawing is done by HiddenPrizePanel.java and the applet itself is inside HiddenPrizeApplet.java.
    MY HTML FILE:
    <html>
    <body>
    <script src="http://www.java.com/js/deployJava.js"></script>
    <script>
    var attributes = { code:'HiddenPrizeApplet', width:800, height:600} ;
    var parameters = {jnlp_href: 'HiddenPrizeApplet.jnlp'} ;
    deployJava.runApplet(attributes, parameters, '1.6');
    </script>
    </body>
    </html>
    MY JNLP FILE:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="" href="">
    <information>
    <title>Hidden Prize Task</title>
    <vendor>Clinical Neuroscience Lab at OSU</vendor>
    </information>
    <resources>
    <!-- Application Resources -->
    <j2se version="1.6+"
    href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se" />
    <jar href="HiddenPrizeTask.jar" main="true" />
    </resources>
    <applet-desc

    main-class="HiddenPrizeApplet"
    width="800"
    height="600">
    </applet-desc>
    <update check="background"/>
    </jnlp>
    When I try to run the applet inside of a browser, nothing happens. I can right-click the blank space on the page where the applet should theoretically be appearing and choose "Open Java Console" to check for error messages, so I did, and it says:

    Can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? I don't understand why it says "components." in front of "HiddenPrizeApplet" whenever HPA is referenced, since I never refer to HPA as "components.HiddenPrizeApplet" in my jnlp or html files, and I certainly didn't put the java files or the class files or any other kinds of files in a folder or package named "components" to my knowledge. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    What is the copy/pasted lines in HPA between the first line up to & including..
    public class HiddenPrizeApplet extends (J)Applet..?
    BTW - when posting code or code snippets, HTML/XML(/JNLP) or input/output. please use the code tags as described on the 'sticky post' at the top of the forum thread listing. You can still edit your original post to do that, but before you do so, it would pay to run the JNLP through JaNeLA and fix any report in the output list that has a red high light. The JNLP as it stands is invalid in at least one respect. But don't take my word for it, JaNeLA validates against an XSD that is better than Oracle's DTD. I am confident in saying that, because I was involved with the development of the XSD ..& JaNeLA. ;)

  • Leopard cannot play .avi files (MJPG format)

    After installing Leopard, I cannot play .avi files (MJPG format) using Quicktime. These files work without a hitch on my other Mac that has Tiger. I've tried Perian.org, DIVX, VLN player, Windows media player, WMV player etc. Something went awry after installing Leopard.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Re-install the Flip4Mac QuickTime Component then open System Preferences/Flip4Mac, click the Player Tab and check the "Open AVI files" box. Restart your browser and try again.

  • M93p+HD8570+Win7+KB267038/IE10: WMP crashes with BEX error playing AVI

    Apparently this one's been out and known about for a while, but I just ran into it this week while finishing up the custom software install on a newly received M93p with Windows 7 Pro x64, which also included the AMD HD8570 graphics upgrade.  Driver for the HD8570 (OEM) is provided by Lenovo, not by AMD.  This is not a retail AMD card, but a Lenovo-provided OEM upgrade of an AMD card, and the drivers are only available from Lenovo.
    Turns out Windows Media Player 12 on Win7 with the AMD HD8570 graphics on the M93p cannot play AVI files now, instead crashing with a BEX error.
    Turns out this is caused by a Microsoft update KB2670838 in conjunction with certain AMD graphics and machine chipsets (Q87 on the M93p), which apparently includes the discrete HD8570 and the M93p.  There is a discussion of this problem on Sevenforums in this thread, as well as in other places on the Internet.
    Unfortunately, KB2670838 is also tied to the Windows Update that delivered IE10.  So if you selectively UNINSTALL the KB2670838 update (which DOES eliminate the BEX error in WMP when playing AVI files) you also trigger the backout of IE10 which reverts back to the originally delivered IE8... which is probably undesirable for most of us.  So while you now CAN play AVI files again, you're sadly back to IE8.
    Also, the most recent Windows Update to IE11 in Win7 also retains KB2670838, so really any "current" version of IE beyond IE8 with this particular AMD hardware is going to see this BEX crash when WMP plays AVI files.  There simply is no way to selectively uninstall KB2670838 by itself, while retaining IE10 or IE11.
    Rumor has it that MS is "working on a fix", but for the moment it is obviously not publicly available.
    That's the story.  Just wanted to share what information I now am aware of.
    If you do want to install IE10 or IE11 on Win7 and with the M93p and HD8570, then your temporary "solution" in this particular hardware/software configuration is to instead use some other media player program when wanting to play an AVI that you would otherwise use WMP for.  For example, the English version of the excellent Pot Player is a superb alternative, as it plays EVERYTHING!!

    I am having almost exactly the same problem with Lightroom 4 and now, with Lightroom 5.
    I was able to import .NEF photos, .PEF and .RW2 RAW formats from the folders already on my external RAID harddrive. However, I was unable to import video from the same folders. My problem is exactly like the one ntreuter was having -- I can sometimes get a few video files to import, but then the import process runs for a very long time,and I get an popup error message "There was a problem importing the video".
    When I try to "syncronize folder", the same thing happens. I am unable to import any video and the process ends with the popup error message "There was a problem importing the video".  Sometimes I am also unable to upload photos because the import process crashes because of video files.
    This is crazy. I've searched online and there are a number of reports of this problem, but no clear solution at all.
    My system:
    Lenovo W520
    2.20 gigahertz Intel Core i7-2720QM
    16 gigs RAM
    64 kilobyte primary memory cache
    256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    6144 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
    64-bit ready
    Multi-core (4 total)
    Hyper-threaded (8 total)
    Intel(R) HD Graphics Family [Display adapter]
    NVIDIA Quadro 1000M [Display adapter]
    Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem are greatly appreciated!

    My QuickTime player us not playing .avi files and says I need a codec I can't play no .avi files on QuickTime. How could I fix this because I want to play these files with QuickTime.

    Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
    The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
    As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
    Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • Recording AVI for 30 seconds with compression filter

    Hi there,
    It seems to me that I have a problem. The problem contains to film a movie for 30 seconds with 30 fps. Without compression filter everything goes quite right. But with a compression filter the record time is a disaster.
    If I read this page http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/0A4D5BF47FD3FF0186256E9A004FD671 it's quite obvious to me what the problem is: The average write time.
    After reading this I adjust the frame rate. So the play time (when you play the avi) and the the recorded time (time that you actually filmed) are the same. But I believe this is not the right solution.
    Could anyone help me with this problem?
    I use Labview 2009 with Vision Acquisition
    Thank you in advance

    Hi there,
    When you use a compression filter, your PC have to process every frame that you acquire.
    Depending on your image size, image type (color or mono) and your CPU performance, you will increase time needed between each acquired frame.
    Try different codec. But keep in mind that some only work on color images and some on mono images or both.
    You will find a VI that list all the codec installed on your computer.
    The frame rate you mentionned when you create an AVI is only an indication for the playback. It doesn't help.
    Hope this helps

  • AVI movie - Cinepak & PCM codecs - Audio compatible with QT?

    Hi.
    I have an AVI movie made with Cinepak video codec and PCM audio "codec".
    PCM is really more of a standard uncompressed audio format than an actual "codec".
    In default configuration, QT fully supports AVI/Cinepak. I know that it also supports the ADPCM audio codec.
    But my vid is PCM, not ADPCM.
    My question - will PCM play on QT on a Mac that has only the standard codec set that came from the factory (ie, no need to require Mac viewers to find and install a codec to before they can play the vid)?
    THANKS!

    Change the video format into MOV with applications like MPEG Streamclip. You may find this VTC helpful.
    That bitrate is too high for MOV, so you may have to re-encode it. iMovie does not read all video codecs, so you may have to re-encode it anyway. I have never imported MPEG-4 Part 2 video into iMovie, which I don't use often. At least, I know that it reads MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.164).

    Hi there, I know this is not going to help you, but I'm having the same problem with my brand new Motorola S9HD Bluetooth headset.
    It plays ok, but the FORWARD and BACKWARD buttons on the headset don't work. The PLAY/PAUSE do.
    I'm having the same problem with my car's stereo(JENSEN VM9512HD), which plays using A2DP, but the FORWARD and BACKWARDS buttons on the car stereo don't respond, but the PLAY/PAUSE do. Also using the stereo to answer a call as I drive it's great, but the address book shows the numbers and names encrypted, it would be great if they fix that too.
    Hopefully, if we keep bringing this feedback, they'll do something.
