Unable to play .mkv files

I used to be able to play .mkv files with VLC Player just fine before. After I started using Boot Camp with Windows XP, I am unable to play such files because I get an error message saying this computer is too slow to process the video. I'm trying to play 720p movies, but haven't been able to on a 2.2 Ghz MBP with 2 Gigs of ram. So, if anyone has a solution, please post! Thank you!

Any other video works. I tried launching vlc with --no-video and then sound channel works. Both totem and vlc gives Segmentation Fault in terminal.
I remember when I installed vlc, it asked whether I will use gstreamer or phonon, I did choose gstreamer. Now I tried reinstalling vlc and it didn't ask for that anymore.
Ok, I tried opening other mkv files and they worked (I don't know why all the time I thought that the file is 100% ok, apparently it wasn't). But that file was similar to any other files (just a new episode of one TV show).
P.S. I noticed that I can open that file with Windows and there are audio bugs, but It shows video well... Ahhh, the most important is that video codecs are fine on my arch, so let it be so!
A strange bug, but if it's like that only with one wrong file, then it's ok. Sorry about bothering you here about my strange file

  • Flash CS5 unable to play .FLV files on Macbook Pro

I have a colleague who is trying to put together a Flash package for me  on her macbook pro.  It needs to play an flv file. She is unable to play  flv files on her computer either in Flash or using the Adobe Media  Player. I have no problem playing the same files on my macbook pro,  we're both running the latest OS and have version 1.8 of Adobe Media  Player.
She went to the Adobe site to download the latest version of Adobe  Media Player, hoping that might include whatever component is missing on  her system. Because of Adobe's decision not to distribute AMP that  didn't help.  She has Flash Professional CS5 11.0.2 on her system.  When  she imports an flv video into a Flash project and tries to play it she  gets an error message saying it can't stream the video. Note that the  video is on her hard drive, it is NOT on the internet so no streaming  should be required.
The actual error message is: "the video player is in the connection  error state. It enters this state when a video stream attempted to load  but was unsuccessful. There are two possible reasons for the error: no  connection to the server or the stream was not found."
Since it's a file on her hard drive, and she has loaded the file  into the Adobe development environment successfully, the one thing we  know for certain is that neither of these reasons is correct. Something  is obviously missing on her system, what is it and what can we do to fix  it?

I'm getting error too (Error #2044: Unhandled NetStatusEvent:. level=error, code=NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound). I'm getting this with CS5. This file was previously made in CS4 and never got this error.
Everything (fla and flv too) is on external hard disk.

  • Playing .mkv files in QTX/QT7 video works fine, sound is distorted.

What I'm trying to do is open some .mkv files in Quicktime 7 so that I can export it as an mp4 with AAC audio (instead of AC3, 5.1). The audio during playback ends up sounding like a helicopter or what you'd hear if you stuck a piece of sandpaper in a box fan. When I play the files in VLC the audio is as it should be. I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I have version 1.2.1 of Perian installed as well if that helps at all.

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
Or this link may be helpful:
    http://www.squidoo.com/mkv-converter-mac
Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:
"There's a program called Plex that runs .mkv files awesome on my 2.0 ghz macbook."
    http://www.plexapp.com/
    Maybe worth a try?

  • Can apple TV be made to play .mkv files?

Has anyone been able to make apple TV play .mkv files?

If you install http://perian.org/ quicktime will be able to play mkv files including the ac3 audio.
You can use Quicktime to save the file as a mov which should then play on the AppleTV. Personally I use VisualHub, it's much faster and allows you to queue up a batch to process. It will depend on your system, but my machine will recode a TV show in approx. 30mins.
The Visualhub method will loose the surround sound. AC3 and DTS are not supported by the mp4 container so it will be converted to stereo. You should be able to keep the AC3 or DTS in a mov, but I've not tried this so I don't know whether the AppleTV will play the file.
As the new firmware will allow for HD movies with surround sound (according to the MacWorld keynote) there might be a fix for this then. We'll have to wait for someone to rent a movie and see what the container and codecs used are. Hopefully we'll be able to use 5.1 AAC and the AppleTV will convert that to AC3 out of the optical output for my surround amp as AC3 and DTS take up a lot of space.

I have found that my player is compatible with MKV files. My question is can I play them back on a burned disc? And if so, do I just burn the MKV file to the DVD like I would any other file(s). If not does anyone out there know the correct procedure and proper softwarefor taking the MKV files and transferring them to a DVD so they play in my player? Right now I use imgburn for making duplicates of my DVD movies for my personal backup. I would like to do the same with my BR movies especially the ones that require a double layer BR which right now cost wayyyy too much. I just want to convert so it can fit on a single layer BR

  • Stor.e TV + - playing .mkv files have sound but no picture

I've just transferred all of my .mkv files onto my store TV + but most of them have sound but no picture? They play fine on my PC...
Also, anyway of changing the icon on the folder to the actual dvd cover on the store TV +?Sick of looking at yellow folders!!
    Thanks..

    Hi
Found the StorE TV+ specifications on this Toshiba page:
    http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/eu/store-external-hard-drives/tv-plus/
    The Store TV+ supports the video formats:: MPEG1 (DAT, MPG), MPEG2 (VOB, MPG, TS/M2TS/TP TRP), MPEG4 (AVI, MP4, MKV), VC-1 (WMV), H.264 (AVI, MKV,MOV, MP4), RM/RMVB (RM/RMVB)
The MKV files are supported by MPEG4 and H.264 video format.
Are the files recorded in this formats?
How about playing other files i.e MPG or AVI?
Furthermore I would recommend checking the connection to the TV.
Here is a user manual which I found on the Toshiba page:
    http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/Global/Manuals/Store/Manuals/STORE_TVplus_User_Manual.pdf
It shows you how to connect the Store TV+ correctly.

Is there any codec to make this happen have tried perain and still doesnt work.

MKV files are a bit tricky to get playing, VLC might do it but I doubt that'll help frontrow, it might be worth using handbrake to re-encode these files into MP4.

  • Unable to Play wmv files om Macbook pro

How can I play wmv files on my MacBook pro?  I always could play them but recently unable to.  I get the message that Flip4Mac must be updated.  I try to update but it says it is already updated.  Also tried updating Quick player and gert the same reply.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm getting error too (Error #2044: Unhandled NetStatusEvent:. level=error, code=NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound). I'm getting this with CS5. This file was previously made in CS4 and never got this error.

I was previously able to play wmv files on my nokia x6 initially. I believe that after upgrading my firmware, I am now not able to play WMV files. Whenever i try it gives error as " unable to play media clip"
I have tried to format the phone to factory default but the problem still persist.

What version of Authorware are you using?
Assuming Authorware 7, linking to a .wmv should require the
    movie icon
to use the Windows Media Player control, which should allow
    the .wmv to
play as it does on your desktop. If this isn't happening,
    perhaps try
renaming the extension to .wmp and re'import' into
    Authorware? Maybe
that will force the WMP engine to start.
There's a sample on using the WMP ActiveX control here:
    http://www.awaretips.net
which is a little dated, but may be worth downloading and
    trying with
your movie just to see if that approach works.
