Unable to prepare file

I'm using Lightroom 2.7 and attempting to edit images in Photoshop CS5 on a Windows 7 computer.
1. I'm not able to use the function Ctrl+E to open an image in CS5 as it isn't automatically recognised; I have to right click the image and select CS5 that way.
2. Some of my images (not all) are now experiencing a problem in that when I right click and select to edit a copy in CS5 I get an error message stating... "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file (location of file - external hard drive) for editing. It will not be opened"
If I then look in Windows Explorer I see that two extra files have been created (neither show up in Lightroom)... file name followed by edit.jpg and file name followed by edit.jpg.swp
If I then delete both these files Lightroom can then (but not always) open the file in CS5.
This has only happened since upgrading to CS5.
Might any of you guru's know what is going on and how to correct these errors... ?

The usual method of addressing the missing CS5 option for Ctrl+E is to reinstall Lr. This forces the application to recheck the system registry for the most up to date version of Photoshop.
Your second issue may also be resolved after reinstalling Lr

  • Lr 1.31 unable to prepare file....

I've downloaded and installed the Lr Beta 2.0, but since do so, I can not open a file in PSCS3. When I attempt to do this, I get the error "Unable to prepare file....". Need help. I can open files in PS with the Beta 2.0. Should I uninstall 2.0 for now or is there a fix for this?

Sorry, about the confusion. This is a problem with LR 1.3.1, not in 2.0. However, I didn't notice this problem until I installed 2.0, but that doesn't mean it was not there before. So maybe this is a 2.0 issue, maybe not, I don't know. I will post this in the 2.0 forum as well, maybe they know about this already.

Ok, so I removed 2.0 but I still have the problem. I went through and deleted all the traces of 2.0 from the normal places. I have not scoured the registry to find any all references of 2.0...is that my next step?
Yes, I'm running Windows XP and yes, I'm sure if I had a Mac, I would not be having this problem. (stupid windows)

  • Error message: "Unable to prepare the selected file for editing"

There is another similar post. <br /><br />I have imported a bunch of Nikon NEF raw files into Lightroom. I can work them without any problem, but when I right-click the image to edit it further in Photoshop CS3. I get this message:<br /><br />i "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file <filename.NEF> for editing. It will not be opened."<br /><br />Photoshop has no trouble opening these NEF files by itself, but Lightroom can't hand it them off. Anyone know why this is? Nothing I can find in the help file or elsewhere here.<br /><br />Stan

Sean, if they are off-line, would any of this Xmp stuff make any difference? Don't they need to be brought On-lie to edit? And where would the Xmp's go with them off-line?

In iMovie I am getting this message...Unable to prepare project for publishing.  The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. File already open with write permission.
    How do I resolve this?

    Hi
Most often it helps by - Turning Off the TimeMachine application - during work in iMovie.

  • Unable to prepare project for publishing The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (File already open with with write permission)

When I click on finalize project or when I tried to share on Vimeo iMovie goes through this ten hour operation and the, somethime while I'm away from the computer, I get this error message.  UNABLE TO PREPARE PROJECT FOR PUBLISHING.  The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (File already open with with write permission).
This has happened to me before and I can't nail down the particulars of when this happens.  I will say I've never been able to Finalize A Project (not even sure what than means) but I have been able to publish short films to YouTube.  This current film is a little over an hour and I picked the HD Format.  Could the size have something to do with it?

I try to export my Imovie and I always get the error code"Unable to prepare project for publishing...File already open with write permission"  it even does it when I am just trying to export to my external hard drive to save the file

Thanks!!! I had same error (with -49) and the mac had an external hard drive attached.. and it was doing a backup.  Stopped, disconnected and the project exported!

  • Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at (file path to image) for editing. it wil

I have been using lightroom since Beta and this is the first issue that I can't seem to fix.
I was working on some files editing in external editors - PS5 & Niksoftware I had worked on 4 or 5 images no problems, working awesome as normal.  Then I decided to get rid of one of the files - an edited image - when it asked to remove from lightroom or from disk, I clicked, remove from disk. I never do that but trying to be better with space.  Then tried to edit a different image and the error "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at (NEF - the proper location) for editing. it will not be opened." comes up.
I looked on line and one answer was to delete the preference file and then restart, which also meant reloading the catalogue.  All of which worked no problem but the error still is coming up.  I have restarted lightroom and the computer a couple of times, in different sequences
I have lightroom 5.3 64 bit on windows 7, as I said all working perfectly until deleting one file.
Anybody have any ideas for me?

I had this error message, too. Turned out it was due to my use of subst to create a virtual drive letter for my photo library. See Lightroom 3.2 - Using subst to a local drive fails for the solution! (even with LR 5.5, still)

  • Hi I'm getting Lightoom error when trying to edit in Nik Software "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at    /Volumes/Portable C/Kite Skating nikon/_DHT9654.NEF for editing.  It will not be opened.

Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at
    /Volumes/Portable C/Kite Skating nikon/_DHT9654.NEF for editing.
    It will not be opened.
what does this mean? can anyone help?

Yes it is on a portable drive yet I have already worked with it and exported it as a jpg. The problem arises whenever I try to edit in the plug-ins from Nik software...this just happened recently as it never happened before...for years?

  • LR 3.3 "unable to prepare the selected file" for plugin

OK - using LR 3.3 and trying to edit an image in an external plugin and getting this error message:
Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at [file name] for editing.
    It will not be opened.
    1) Image can still be adjusted and printed in Lightroom
    2) FIle name and path are correct
    Possible source of problem:
    3) Last week I renamed the volume and had to go through all my directories and find missing files. I did that.
    4) I've also optimized the catalog hoping it would restore things, but nope.
    5) I can edit other files found on this volume (an internal hard drive) and same top-level directory with this plugin.

Resolved. File permissions had somehow been set to read-only. Now if only I could figure out why that happened...

Can there be any external hard disks - if so How is/are it/they formatted ? Must be Mac OS Extended (hfs) if used for Video.
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most but not for VIDEO.
What this means in Your situation is above me.
    • free space on internal boot hard disk? How much ?
    Video codec
    • streamingDV, AIC etc. (not .avi, .mp4, .m4v, .wmv etc as they are containers not codecs)
    Pictures
    • in what format ? .jpg, .bmp, .tif, else ?
    Audio
    • from where/what format ? iTunes, .avi, .mp3, .aiff, else ?
    The "com.apple.iMovie.plist" file
Many users has not observed that there are TWO libraries.
    • Library - at root level
    • Library - in user/account folder - THIS IS THE ONE to look into

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

You need more free space on your hard drive.

After phone support from apple I ended up creating a new project and adding all 117 clips back in individually till I found out what clips flagged and would not allow me to export. I had 3 I deleted and replaced and everything works now 1hr after tedious work....
Where do Your material come from
    • Camera
    • External hard disk
    • USB-memory
And all are connected so that iMovie can find it ?

  • Unable to prepare project for publishing. The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (Error code -50) imovie 09 v8.0.6

When I try to export the movie I get this error code. Im doing a music video and have put days into it and now I can not get it to export! My other small project export with no problem.

Thanks for the details.  We have a similar problem (see my post below) and are in the process of adding back each clip and then testing for export.  My question is, once iMovie is unable to export the project, does it render the file "bad" and prevent exporting even if you remove the "poisned" clip(s)?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hello,  We are having a similar problem running iMovie '09.  We get the exact same error as you reported.
"Unable to prepare project for publishing" The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred (-50)
We have a very similar situation were we have multiple repeated clips.  However, our clips are 2.4 's.  Like you, we took the finished project and started eliminating edits that we thought might be preventing it from exporting. The following actions still would not allow the project to export:
    removing title pages
    removing transitions
    removing imported music from iTunes
removed another clip from another event
    closed all other programs
closed iMovie, powered off computer, opened iMovie, tried to export
reconfirmed the last project exported would still export - it did without issueThe only difference between the project that will export and the one that does not are these short (2.4's) repeating clips
When we create the new project from the recorded event without making any edits (just as recorded), it exports without issue.  We have started the arduous task of adding back in each edit and testing it for export until we determine which edit is causing it to "not export".  This is a very inefficient way of troubleshooting.
This is a science project for my son and we need to be able to save it as a QT or mpeg4 movie so that he can submit it to his teacher for viewing and a grade!
Any ideas from any other users would be greatly appreciated.

  • I am trying to send an iMovie project to iDVD and I keep getting the following error msg.  "Unable to prepare subject for publishing:  The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (-43)"

I am trying to send an iMovie project to iDVD and I keep getting the following error msg.  "Unable to prepare subject for publishing:  The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (-43)"

    Check out this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1421870
It may mean you either your Event or your Project. Have you moved any of the files in the Finder by any chance? That error may come up if you moved anything outside of iMovie. Do you get an error message when you choose Share>Export to iMovie (choose medium size) and save it to the Desktop? If you can export it to the desktop, you can pull that file into iDVD separately and still make it work.

  • IMovie '09 "Unable to Prepare Project for Publishing" error (-2009)

Please help ! I have just created a small movie in iMovie '09 from imported clips from Sony Handycam with miniDV tapes. All clips imported easily and can be viewed and edited. Though when I try to share the project to iTunes or even export it to my desktop I get the message "Unable to prepare the project for publishing" error (-2009).
I have been searching the forum and the web for an answer or quick fix and I see none, though i do see that many people are having this same issue. I already have all permission set to read & write on all the appropriate folders. I don't know what else to do.....I was hoping to have this project done for a Christmas present for my wife.
    Please help .... ! ! !

I think I know what was the problem in my case. My project-file wasn´t very large, but I imported all my movies in one single event. After splitting the movies up into different events, I was able to export my project....
