Unable to print to Epson SP870

I upgraded yesterday from iPhoto 4.0.3 to iPhoto 6.0.6 on my Powerbook running OS X 10.3.9. Nothing else changed on my computer except, of course, the simultaneous installation of the other iLife 06 applications (which I don't use; in fact I immediately deleted GarageBand and all its ancillary files).
iPhoto 6 completely refuses to send any print job to my Epson Stylus Photo 870. I can save my iPhoto pages as PDF files from the Print dialog box, then print them without any trouble from Adobe Reader or Preview, but I can't print anything at all from iP 6. There is no sign that anything is ever queued for printing: the Stylus Photo 870 print job status window that opens whenever I print from any other application never opens when I try to print from iP 6, and no error message or other signal of any kind appears. The print job just silently vanishes into the Twilight Zone.
I see there have been several other posts here from people who are unable to print to various Epson printers from iP 6, and none of those posts has drawn any reply. I hope this one will fare better.
After upgrading iPhoto, I repaired permissions, applied the update to 6.0.6, repaired permissions again, upgraded all ten of my iPhoto 4 Libraries, familiarized myself with iP 6's preferences, and worked with it for a while before I tried for the first time this morning to print anything. The printer has the latest Epson driver, and it prints normally from every other application I've tried, exactly as it did before I upgraded iLife.
Any ideas? Any further information you'd like me to supply?

eww,
...in fact I immediately deleted GarageBand and all its ancillary files...
I'm surprised your iPhoto will run at all. This is a common cause of iPhoto 6 having unexpected quits and crashes. I recommend that you re-install GarageBand. TD says that you don't need all the loops, just the application. This could be the cause of your printing trouble, although I've not seen this to be the case for anyone else.
I'm not familiar with your exact model of Epson. I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX620 and did experience an issue where the print job appears to start, gets as far as charging the ink, then stops with no explanation. It only did this from iPhoto; other apps were not affected.
Some threads in which this was discussed, with various Epson models:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3955908
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=832759
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4171156
Have you deleted the iPhoto plist file? That fixed it for one poster.
For me, the issue was resolved after I opened the ColorSync Utility and ran its First Aid Repair.
If you open the Print Monitor window before selecting Print, do you see any response?
Regards.

  • Unable to Print to Epson printers using LPD on PPC, works on Intel

After updating to Leopard, I am unable to print to my network printer Epson 870 and CX6400 from my G5 Imac. Everything worked fine with Mac OS 10.4.x. It works from my MacBook running Leopard. I am unable to select (even using browse) the appropriate Gutenprint V.5.1.3 driver. It fails to output to print server. From my MacBook all my network printer works - Samsung ML-1710, Epson 870 and CX6400. From the PPC Imac, only the Samsung works.
If I share the printer from the MacBook, the iMac sees the printers and automatically selects the appropriate Gutenprint driver. I am using IPD. I also tried Window. I can not select the Gutenprint drivers. For the 870, I tried selecting Epson Stylus Color and Photo series 1.3 and Epson CX6000 series driver.
I've reloaded the drivers from Apple and also tried Epson's drivers. I haven't tried loading the standard (non-Apple) gutenprint drivers.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Al

I have the answer. It took quite a while but I know why the 3880 won't print from Photoshop 4 with Maverick. It is due to the Epson .icc page description files. The way to solve the problem is to make your own .icc. OK, so you don't know how to do it. This is what I did so now I get the quality prints I expect from an expensive printer.
You need to go to www.datacolor.com/spyderprint and purchase the Spyderprint hardware and software. It comes as a package for $300 to $350 depending on if you get a sale. The software will print on the 3880 test sheets of color blocks. With the hardware reader you then read the colors on the test sheets printed. What this does is match the monitor image with the printer, ink and paper you used. It makes an .icc page description file for you to select instead of the Epson .icc file. When you print again select the new .icc file and also choose "Printer Manages Colors" instead of "Photoshop Manages Colors" I know this is usual but it works. When you are done you will be smiling too with your beautiful results.
One other thing. If you want, it is optional, also purchase the Spider 4 Pro for $150. It calibrates your monitor and helps make excellent prints.
I understand it is more money and you already probably have a good computer, expensive camera to go with the 3880 so spend the extra money so it all works together.
    I hope this helps.

  • Unable to print to Epson SP 3800 via Airport in 10.5.6

I have my Epson Stylus Pro 3800 connected to the USB port on an Airport Express and have been using it without problems for more than 1 year. I just tried to print a photo and it no longer works. The printer queue opened, the job appeared to be printing, then was removed from the queue as if it was done, but the printer never did anything. I haven't tried printing to the printer for a while so the last time I printed I may have had 10.5.5 or even 10.5.4.
I did a search online and found very few posts with similar problems. One, on the Luminous Landscape forums, seemed identical to mine and can be seen here:
    http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28141&st=20&p=228888&#en try228888
As a test, I removed all my printers from the Print Fax Preference Pane, reset the printing system then downloaded and installed the latest Epson printer driver. I then re-added the printer twice—first while the printer was connected via USB directly to the computer, then while the printer was connected to the Airport. The interesting thing is that each printer shows a different print options dialog even though they both show they are using the same driver.
If I connect via USB directly, I get the normal Epson print options including all the sections: Printer Settings, Advanced Media Control, and Page Layout Settings. If I connect to the printer through the Airport instead I get a section called "Printer Features" which has a much more limited set of options that don't look like the standard Epson printer driver options:
EPIJProfileSpec (you can choose a value from 0-13)
    Color Model - choices are:
    - Color
    - Black & White
    - Advanced Black & White
    - RGB16
Media Type (choice for usual paper types)
Resolution (two options: 360x360 and 720x720)
There are no selections for things such as High Speed, Finest Detail, AccuPhoto HD, etc. A picture of this more limited print dialog can be seen here:
    http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8872
Attempting to print using the Airport-connected setting causes the same behavior where the print queue appears, the job looks like it prints, but nothing happens.
I cannot leave the printer connected to the computer directly because the printer is too big and needs to be in a different location so that is not an option. I need to figure out how to get the Airport-connected option to work again. Any ideas?

After trying for weeks, I finally came up with a very simple workaround that allows me to print to the Stylus Pro 3800 wirelessly again. I don't know why I didn't try this before. All I did was change the way I connect the printer to the Airport Extreme Base Station from using USB to Ethernet. In the printer's front panel "Network Setup" menu I made sure that the Bonjour option was enabled.
After this, it was just a simple matter of adding the printer again from the Print Fax preference pane and everything worked!
So, if anyone else is having a similar problem, try using the Ethernet port on your printer instead of the USB one.
    Cheers

  • Unable to print with Epson 3880 in LR3

I am no longer able to print with LR3 on my Epson 3880.  I have printed lots of photos on it in the past and when I have tried to print on it in the last few weeks, I go through the normal process on my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and everything appears normal.  LR3 processes the photos and the Epson Icon pops up on my task bar and it shows the job as having been completed - but nothing prints.  The computer believes that it has successfully printed my photos.
I have tried deleting and adding the printer, but that has not helped.  I have also tested my connection through the Epson Status Monitor.  I can print a test page with that utility and check for the need to clean the print head.  The computer appears to be able to talk to the printer, but it won't print photos.
One other thing that appears a little unusual is that I can select a specific colour profile to use for my specific photo paper, but I can no longer find the setting in the printer driver that states 'Turn Off Colour Management'.
I have checked the software update twice and I have the latest updates installed.
I am stuck and need to print some photos for family.  Any suggestions are appreciated!
    Don

That is a good tip Andrew.  I believe that the driver was updated in the last couple of months and as I am not printing on a regular schedule, I didn't notice the problem.  With the fresh install from the Epson site, everything looks the way it should.
I am going to follow your advice and not update via Software Update.  I will install directly from Epson.  This is the first time in three and a half years on the Mac that I have had an issue like this.
    Thanks,
    Don

  • Unable to print to Epson XP30 33 from Macbook Pro

I have a Macbook Pro running on OS X Lion 10.7.5. I recently purchased an Epson XP30-33 printer but am having problems printing. The printer is installed and I have downloaded the latest drivers off the Apple site. When I attempt to print the printer comes up in the dialogue box but when the data is sent to the printer the system just stops and I get an error message - even though it says the printer is ready.

I would recommend doing the '''''Reset''''' mentioned on that page, but make sure you reset all the preferences for that particular printer.

Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • I am unable to print anything since installing the latest driver for my epson stylus rx640. I have followed epson's advice by doing repair permissions, but I still can't print anything. Can anybody suggest anything?

Can't print with my Epson stylus RX 640 since the latest apple software update for epson. Since then I completely reinstalled the printer following epson's advice. It worked. But today, I am trying to print some photos and nothing happens. Epson suggest resetting and then doing some repair permissions. Done that and still no joy. Can anyone help please.

contact Epson again and ask them about using a generic Gutenprint driver; I read in one of the threads here - but can't find it right now - about a problem with your model printer. Since Epson has not updated its driver to work with SL on this older model, it appears using a generic driver does work. You might also try searching for those threads by typing your model number into the search box.

  • Unable to print from Photoshop CS4 in an iMac OS 10.6.3 to large format printer Epson 11880

Hi there! I was wondering if you could help me with this case.
Old computer: Mac G4  (purchased in 2002)
    Old OS: OS 10.4.11  (Tiger)
    CPU: Dual 1.25 GHz
    Memory: 2 RAM
    Software: Photoshop 7
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880 (64” wide monster). Prints large posters, banners, etc.
As you can see, it is time for an upgrade...
    New computer: iMac
New OS: OS 10.6.3  (Snow Leopard)
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    Memory: 16 GB
    Software: Photoshop CS4
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880
Situation: We hooked up everything and managed to print on the 11880 printer 2 times and printed two large format prints. On the third attempt, we encountered a serious problem...
Problem: After opening a file in Photoshop and sending it out for printing in the large format Epson printer, the file goes to the printer queue and stays there for 6 seconds, and then it disappears. It does not print. :-(
What we have done so far:
We made sure we downloaded the latest printer driver for this printer from Epson’s website.
The printer driver is correct. The computer talks to the printer and we are able to execute all the commands from the printer utilities panel. (i.e. check ink levels, clean heads, etc.)
And yes, the printer is okay, because we have been using it with the old G4 machine for about a year.
This problem got so frustrating, that we thought that something we transferred during the computer installation might be the culprit. So at one point we erased the hard drive on the new computer and reinstalled the operating system, and have not put any files from any old computers into this machine. The computer has nothing else in it. Except: The operating systems, and the Mac applications that come when the Mac comes out of the box. The only other program installed in it is Photoshop CS4 and the printer driver.
We were wondering if this was just a printing problem, period. So we added a small printer to the computer - and old Epson 2200 we have. We sent a file to this printer and there is not problem.
Perhaps, the file size might have been an issue? It does not matter. We can send a large 60 MB file to the printer or a small photograph measuring only 8 x 10, and these will linger in the queue for 6 seconds, and disappear never to be printed.
Temporary relief came when we got rid of Adobe Photoshop’s Preferences file. After getting rid of the file and allowing Photoshop to reconstruct it, we managed to print two large files on the printer. Then it failed again. Tried getting rid of the preferences again, and the trick did not work anymore. :-(
Another temporary relief came when we created another user in the computer. On the new user account it printed again a couple of times only to fail later.
And yes, the printer WILL print from other Mac programs. If for instance, we open a file on Preview, and send it to the printer and the file will be printed. And yes, we have managed to print very large files with this method.
In the last couple of days, we have spent 3 hours on the phone with the guys at Epson. They verified the driver and because the computer seems to be communicating with the printer and printing from other Mac applications, they suspected that the problem is with Adobe.
We called Adobe once, and spent 30 minutes with an Indian fellow who concluded that the problem was with how the computer handles the spooling. According to him, Photoshop sends the file to the computer and the computer seems to get rid of it. So he passed the buck and told us that the problem was with Apple.
We called Apple and spoke for 30 minutes with a friendly technician, who transferred us to a higher level techno-geek. I spent 1 more hour on the phone with Apple, and we tried everything. We went through Adobe’s knowledgebase and tried every suggested solution (see Adobe’s KB406452). It was with him that we found a temporary fix of removing the Preferences file, but the solution was short lived. He finally thought the problem was with Adobe as the printer is able to print from all applications EXCEPT Adobe Photoshop.
We called Adobe for the second time...and after waiting on hold from 1 entire hour, we got an Indian technician, that bless his heart, had a very thick accent and had no expertise, in my opinion. He was good at collecting data and he even made me share my computer screen so that he could troubleshoot the problem. After being constantly put on hold by him (because he had to consult with someone else), he passed the buck and said that it was Apple’s problem. I just told him that it was not as likely because all programs print EXCEPT Photoshop. After trying what I would consider a “hail Mary” of DELETING all the printers from my Library folder, and not replacing them, he recorded a case number for another Adobe technician to call us in a few days.
Because the above technician completely blew the Library, I just erased and reinstalled the OS. This time, I did not allow the OS to be updated - from 10.6.2 (that comes in the box), to 10.6.3. We tried printing using the 10.6.2 and had the same problem. :-(
Conclusion: I think it is a problem of Adobe CS4 not getting along with Apple’s new operating system. The Epson printer is doing fine, because it has been a product that has been in the market for almost 3 years. What is disappointing is that none of the companies wants to man up and say that it is a problem and that they are willing to work on it. Instead they pass the buck to the next company.
I can’t believe I am the only person experiencing this. Has anyone had this problem, and have you found a solution or workaround for it?

Dear Doyle, John and Gator Soup,
Thank you for your kind replies to my problem.
PS is assigned 70% RAM. In fact, I have never had so much RAM in my life. Files open at lightning fast speed! :-)  We have never considered a RIP as we do not have an intense workload. In fact all the files we have tried to print print well on our old G4 with Tiger and Photoshop 7, which at the moment has saved our butt. However it would be nice to get the new faster machine with Photoshop CS4 to talk to the Epson 11880.
Yes, we are printing directly to the printer. We have hooked up the computer via a 6 ft USB cable to the unit.
The specs and pixel dimensions of a typical file we print are:
Type of file: tif  (in this case it is an RGB file) // However, we avoid any color management from the computer or the printer when printing it at this time.
    File size: 60 MB
    Pixel size: 6796 x 3100
    Print size: 34" x 16" @ 200 dpi
I have not tried saving it as a pdf yet. Will try that next.
I did go to the Console on the Mac though, and recorded its activity between 5:14 pm - 5:19 pm when I tried to print a file.
Remember, the symptoms are:  We send a file to the printer...The file goes to the printer queue, and it lingers there for 6 seconds. The file then disappears.
Although there is a cryptic message of "invalid colorspace" in the log, I don't believe that the file is corrupt. First because we have tried several files, second because smaller versions of these can be printed in another Epson 2200 printer, and third because the large format images can still be printed using our old G4 machine with Tiger and Photoshop 7.
This might provide me with extra ammunition for when I call both Adobe and Apple on Monday. Apple has been quite good on customer support - particularly when they upgrade you to higher level geeks. ;-)   Do you have any idea I what time I should call Adobe so that I can get people on the western hemisphere to answer the phone? It seems that after a certain time they start speaking with an Indian accent over there.
Enclosed, for whatever is worth, is the Console's log:

  • TS3147 Since I have upgraded to OSX on my imac I am unable to print onto a CD using my Epson XP700. Has anyone else had this trouble?

I am using the CD printer software that came with the printer from Epson. I've tried updating the firmware.
    HELP!

When I had Epson products I found them quite helpful. Sorry that your experience was so different.

  • Can't Print to Epson Printers from Photoshop

Hey everyone - for some reason I am unable to print from Photoshop CS6 to two different Epson printers - an Epson 9800 and an Epson 7880. I have tried to print from three different computers (OS 10.6 and OS 10.8) and have also tried three different USB cables. Each time I get the same results - the computer acts like it sends the data to the printer, but the printer never prints anything. I am not getting any error messages. I am attepting to print a 3960x2160, 720 DPI RGB TIF image. I tried printing from Preview as a test but that didn't work either.
This is a new problem as I have been printing to these printers for years with no issues.
I have tried reinstalling drivers, turning the computer and printers on and off, cleared my caches and repaired permissions, but so far no luck.
However there is ONE situation in which I am able to print - if I save the image as PDF and print it from from Acrobat, specifically with "Acrobat Color Management" selected, it WILL print. If I try to print from Acrobat with "Printer Manages Colors" selected, it will not print.
This is really driving me mad and I would love to find a solution. Major thanks to anyone who can help!

Success! I have no idea what the issue here is but I tried printing a completely different file as a test, and lo, that file prints fine. The other file does not. Since the file I'm trying to print is a rasterized Illustrator file, I just rasterized it again so I'm working with a new file, and it prints! I am so pleased.

  • Custom Print Size not printing to Epson 4900

I had Epson Support on the phone yesterday as I have been unable to print anything wider than 22 inches from Lightroom 5.7 . The custom page size is 17" by 30". The tech took over my computer, made sure all was set up correctly. The lightroom print module showed the proper dimensions and the tech hit print. The print came out resized at 22 inches. The tech then opened the same photo in Photoshop CS5, set up a custom paper size to 17 by 30 and hit print. The print preview showed the proper dimensions and he sent it to the printer. The print came out perfectly at 17x 30. He had no explanation but said it had to be a lightroom problem and not a problem with the 4900
All firmware and software updates have been downloaded to the printer. The computer is a IMac Intel running the latest OS. Does anyone have any ideas why the custom size will print properly from Photoshop, but not from Lightroom
    Thanks in advance

I asked you a question in the Beginners forum. It usually isn't a good idea to post in more than one forum.

  • Difficulty  Printing Borderless Prints with Epson C84

When I had an iMac G3 with OS 9.2 and used the Epson menu for printing, I had no difficulty printing 4x6 inch borderless prints (since that is one of the options on the Epson Menu). But now that I am forced to use the OS 10 printing menu, even when I identify the printer as an Epson C84, crop the photos to fit a 4x6 page and show "0" margins on all sides when selecting 4x6 as paper size, using either iPhoto or Photoshop Elements 3.0, the prints come out with a small white border on all four sides. The Apple Menu with Epson as the chosen printer does not give me an option that says "4 x 6 borderless" when choosing the paper size. Is there something I need to set differently in order to get borderless prints?

I also had a problem finding the "Borderless" option in the print dialogue. Here's what Epson Support told me to do -- It worked perfectly. I can now print borderless from either of the two macs sharing my Epson 1280.
To correct the issue you are experiencing, we will perform a complete
removal of the files and reinstall the driver.
    REMOVE FILES
    1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE
    2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder
    3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder
    4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can
NOTE If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that
you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance
    on obtaining Root Access.
    1. Insert your 10.4 CD/DVD, double click on the CD/DVD icon on your
    desktop.
    2. Double click SYSTEM > INSTALLATION > PACKAGES > EPSON PRINTER
    DRIVERS.PKG
Follow the prompts for the installation, restart your Mac when complete
Please follow the steps below to install the resident driver for your
    printer in OS 10.4:
    1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to your computer.
    2. Open your PRINTER SETUP UTILITY. This is found in HARD DRIVE,
    APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES directory
    3. If there are any entries for your printer click on them and hit the
DELETE. Once they are all gone Click ADD, then MORE PRINTERS at the bottom
    of the printer browser.
    4. In the window that appears, select EPSON USB from the drop-down menu at
the top, then highlight your printer when it appears under NAME , under
PAGE SETUP select ALL, and then hit ADD.
    5. Quit out of the printer setup utility and try printing from any OS X
    application.
To set up your printer for borderless printing in OS X please follow the
    steps below.
After you have installed your printer driver for OS 10, you will need to do
the following to add extra paper features such as borderless printing
    options:
    1. Go to Printer Setup Utility (found in HD > Applications > Utilities).
Delete any existing references to the Epson printer from the list.
    2. Go to Add. Select Epson USB for a USB printer or Epson Firewire for a
    Firewire-connected printer.
    3. Highlight the printer name when it appears under Product. Under "Page
setup" use the up-down arrows and select ALL.
    4. Click Add. The new printer options will now be added to the Printer
list; you will see the printer name numerous times with different paper
selections attached. (If you are unable to see the full description you
will need to extend the name category.)
    5. Highlight the printer name/feature which you wish to use (For example,
"Stylus Photo 2200 (Sheet feeder-Borderless)") and make it the default.
    Close Printer Setup Utility.
    6. Ensure Classic is not running. Open an OS X application and the file you
    wish to print.
Setting up borderless prints in an OS X application (NOTE: not all
    applications will show these options)
    1. Click on FILE and PAGE SETUP. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    SETTINGS: PAGE ATTRIBUTES
FORMAT FOR: EPSON STYLUS XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
PAPER SIZE: Whichever compatible paper size you wish to use
(NOTE: borderless printing is not supported on custom paper sizes.)
    Click OK when done.
    2. Click on FILE and PRINT. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    PRINTER: Stylus XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
    PRESETS: STANDARD
Make any other adjustments needed (on COPIES and PAGES, PRINT SETTINGS,
    etc) and then click PRINT.
