Unable to RAM Preview in CS6?

Why I cannot RAM preview in CS6 with the same settings I've used in 5.5? In fact I can only RAM preview when I disable After Effects Multiprocessing.
Am I missing something here?

I'm having the same problem. It just stopped working mid-session. It was just after I'd been playing around with seeing how the image quality changed between Ray Traced and Classic, so I'm thinking maybe there is a bug there. If I start a new project, render a few frames of a test comp without MP, then switch MP back on, it works. However, if I load up the project where it originally stopped working, that doesn't work at all, no matter what I try. Might there be some sort of flag/setting in the project file that is to do with Ray Traced/Classic options that has become corrupted? I'm probably clutching at straws, but if there is a way to fix it, whether an official bug fix or tinkering around I'll give it a try to avoid re-building my project (or having to wait for long RAM previews...).

  • Cannot RAM Preview in CS6?

Hello!  I have found myself in a bit of a predicament.  I noticed yesterday randomly while working on a project that my ram preview function has stopped working.  When I hit space bar(or control+0) for a preview, the time indicator starts counting up as normal, but the playhead stays stuck in one place, and my comp stays stuck on the frame where the playhead is.  I have tried updating my after effects, opening new projects, and restarting my computer, but nothing has worked!  I don't know what else I should try!  Any suggestions?

I don't follow. Spacebar tries to play the timeline in realtime, Ctrl+0 toggles the visibility of the project window. Hitting 0 on the numpad with numlock on initiates a RAM preview.

    Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
    1.  Navigate to
     “X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
    2. Delete all the files in this folder.
    3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
    5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Unable to create image buffer after RAM preview

Running into an odd and frustrating error. Built a comp using the new Ray-traced 3D renderer and now I'm regretting being an early adopter big time with all the problems I've been encountering with it. The latest comes whenever I do a longer RAM preview in an attempt to watch the whole duration of my comp. It will get to about 170 frames or so, at which point I've interrupted by pressing spacebar because I don't need to see all the way to the end of my work area (around 220 frames). It'll play the RAM preview back fine, and even loop it, but as soon as I stop playback, I get this error message: "After Effects warning: Unable to create image buffer." There's only one button: "okay" and as soon as I click it the same error pops up again and it will never go away, forcing me to close AE from the task manager. I've taken to saving before every RAM preview like I used to do with Flash before previewing my buggy swfs for fear I'll lose all my work after previewing. Any ideas about what might be causing this?
Some more details about my comp:

Yeah, some buffer is very likely not flushing when you interrupt the preview and then there is no more memory on the graphics hardware. Consider setting the work area and your preview options to use only the work area. if it finishes the preview "correctly", it may not suffer the issue. Beyond that - raytracing doesn't/ shouldn't care about the number of items. The math is such, that it makes no difference whether you render a million polygons or just one. Of course there are still limitations due to the GPU dependency, but I doubt you ever truly exhaust the cards' geometry buffers. Compared to pixel data that is a small amount...

  • After Effects CS6 error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback - any ideas please?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz with 16GB RAM (Mac OS 10.9.4)
As a test, I created a 3 and a half minute Sequence in Adobe Premiere CS6, and then imported this into After Effects CS6, and placed it on the AE timeline.
This footage involves a couple of 1920x1080p footage movies, some psds and a large number of JPGs exported from two videos arranged as a sequence in two layers in Premiere, one on top of the other. So all in all for a Premiere / After Effects file I'd say it's reasonably heavy.
I then did a RAM Preview with Multiprocessing switched off - the 3 and a half minute sequence loaded into RAM, taking about 1min 30seconds, and played back in realtime at 25fps. This worked fine with 3,4,5 and 6 GB RAM available to other applications in the Memory Preferences. All things considered I think this is quite good. I can make changes, reclick the RAM Preview icon and my changes load into RAM and it previews ok.
My only 'complaint' is how long the RAM Preview takes to load up the whole thing.
I've been reading up on Multiprocessing and decided to try this to see if I can speed up the time it takes my RAM Preview to load up.
So I looked at some recommendations from Adobe and read information on various forums including this one.
My settings in the Memory Preferences are currently
    • 6GB reserved for other applications
    • Reduce cache size when system is low on memory - unticked
    • After Effects Multiprocessing - ticked
    • Installed CPUs (processor cores) - 8
    • CPUs reserved for other applications - 6
    • RAM allocation per background CPU - 3GB
    • Actual CPUs that will be used - 2
This combination takes about 25 seconds to load up my 3 and a half minute sequence which I thought was pretty amazing.
I then pressed the stop button and then the play button - so now just playing the sequence briefly.
And also added a new layer - into the timeline - just a simple shape.
Then I tried a RAM Preview again.
I found I could load up part of the sequence but not load the whole thing into RAM.
I kept trying to get a RAM Preview and got this message
"After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" which seems to prevent RAM Preview from working.
Eventually I quit and restarted After Effects and the problem went away temporarily and then came back when I tried again.
I tried various changes to the Memory Preferences - trying 3GB available for other applications. This gave 13GB of my 16GB RAM to After Effects.
This made it take slightly longer for the After Effects error to appear but it still appeared.
I tried ticking Reduce Cache size in the Memory Prefs  - the After Effects error still appeared, so having read this is supposed to make the issue better I now leave it untucked, but as far as I can see ticked or untucked, it makes no difference, the problem remains.
    I've since tried -
Making 2,3,4,5 and 6 CPUs available for other applications.
Changing the Background RAM allocation per background CPU to 0.75GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB and 3GB
    Lots of combinations.
But in the end, I always get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error.
It might take less or more time for the message to show up, depending on the combination of settings, but in the end I always got the same message appearing.
And I notice that I can RAM Preview less and less of the timeline. i.e. it becomes more blue than it does green and will load in only a small section of the timeline as opposed to the whole thing.
Reading further, I tried Edit > Purge > Image Cache and Edit > Purge > All Memory but still get the error message.
I also tried ensuring there were no other applications running e.g. Safari or Chrome or Firefox. And certainly not Photoshop or Premiere etc.
Reading even further, I tried two Memory management applications - 'Memory Clean' and 'Purge.'
Neither has had any effect - the After Effects error still appears.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I unticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. And now the RAM Preview loads the whole 3 and half minute sequence in entirety, taking about 1 and half minutes to do so. It's working as perfectly as if I'd just quit and re-opened the application.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I reticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously.
The chose Edit > Purge > All
And tried a RAM Preview again. It loaded up in 25 seconds, but then, as previously, the error message came.
I tried Edit > Purge All - no effect.
And I tried going into the Media and Disk Cache Preferences and clicked Empty Disk Cache - still the problem remains.
I understand from my reading that After Effects CS6 11.0.2 was intended to fix this issue but I'm on 11.0.4 and as far as I can tell, I still have it - assuming it's the same thing.
As far as I can see, not using Multiprocessing allows me to work without these errors but take a bit longer to load the RAM Preview.
However I'd like to be able to use Multiprocessing as it seems it can potentially speeds things up quite a lot. I realise I could just not use it and AE would work, but I'd rather be able to make use of a feature of the software if possible, especially if it will speed things up and make optimum use of the my computer's hardware.
I've downloaded a trial copy of After Effects CC 2014. I'm still testing it but as far as I can see the RAM Preview error appears in this version of AE as well, but can take bit longer to show up in my experience.
Thanks everyone - if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Kind regards,
    John

You need to have much more RAM reserved for other applications and more CPUs reserved for other applications. Your current settings are crippling your performance.
    Read these:

After you have adjusted your settings according to the recommendations on those pages, restart your computer and try again.

  • No real time RAM preview with Pr CS6.0.1 Open, Real time RAM preview with Pr Closed

When Premiere is closed I see real time performance on RAM previews (29.97fps), smooth UI interaction with and without Fast Draft enabled.  When Premiere is opened I get poor fps in RAM previews, lagging UI interaction unless Fast Draft is enabled.  Premiere Memory preferences are set to 6GB reserved for other apps, and Optimized rendering is for Memory.  It seams that as soon as Pr takes on any processing AE's performance just dies until Pr is closed.
I've tried clearing caches in AE and in Premiere, restarts, and repair disk permissions,
Included is a realtime screen capture of what i'm experiencing, I open and close premiere twice to illustrate that it's not an isolated occurrence.

  • After Effects CS6 RAM preview seems to now be broken after 11.0.2.12 update

Updated to the latest patch for AE CS6 11.0.2.12.
When I hit RAM Preview, my After Effects just locks up, or has an enormous (minutes) delay if I have multi-processor rending turned on. Info says it is working on background processes.
In fact, if I am using Trapcode Form or Particular and multiprocessor turned on it tends to crash. Since upgrading the version I can't even render that start of a particular scene.
Is anyone else having an issue with this? I have tried it on another workstation in the office and it does exactly the same thing.
My machine is an HP Workstation Z800, Windows 7 64bit, 18Gb Ram, Xeon [email protected] and Nvidia Quadro 5000.

Yes. when using Particular 2.1 I find that if  I have MP turned ON  it takes forever to set up the processes. Getting out of the MP mode at that point is difficult but possible. Once MP is off everything renders great.
I have no other issues with any operations in the CS6  suite.
This happens on a HP Z820 with all current  software/drivers.

  • CS6 RAM preview short and "needs 2 or more frames" errors

    Hello everyone,
I've been researching this one for over a week now and still haven't found a solution. The short story it is that my RAM preview is limited to only a few seconds regardless of work area, but I've got over 4Gb of RAM available and open for use. CPU is barely being used as well. I'm also intermittently getting the "After Effects Error: RAM Preview requires 2 or more frames to playback,"  which confuses me as I have 4Gb or ram available. RAM is still close to 4Gb during and after preview. This has been a repeated problem, not matter how many times the memory is purged, the RAM is free'd up with the Memory Clear App (as recommended in previous threads), or the computer is restarted. Memory and Cache have been optimized for best performance as well. Also, final renders are fine and have no problems. It's only with RAM preview and previewing the project that I'm having trouble. It seems to me that the project is being bottlenecked somewhere but not sure where or how. To open, here's the system I'm running it on. It may not be a brute but it should be enough to handle the work.
    System:
Program: Adobe After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2
    System: Mid 2010 iMAC, 27-inch
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
    RAM:   8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (two 4gb cards)
Graphics: ATI Radion HD 5750 1024 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD Green 2TB Sata drive
                        -6.0 Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
Project Specifics: (Has happened across other similar projects)
Project: Educational video with graphics, simple animations, and link to Premiere Pro timeline.
-33 layers (most are highlight boxes and animated arrows)
-13 small PNG images (Arrows and simple graphics with 1 3D layer)
                             -7 Short Compositions
                             -7 Text Layers
                             -5 shape layers
                             -1 Premiere Pro Timeline
    Composition Settings: 1280 x 720  at 23.976fps
    Project Location: Company Server
    Problems
-Ram preview only renders a few seconds, regardless of Work Area or "From Current Time" enabled.
-Fairly frequent, "After Effects Error: RAM preview requires two or more frames to playback."
-Scrolling through project is very pixelated.
When Problems Occurs: When trying to perform a RAM preview.
    Attempted Solutions:
    - Use of Memory Clean App to open up more RAM. (Makes little to no difference when problem is at peak.)
    - Shut down and restart computer (Does work for a short time but problem reappears within an hour)
    - Closing all apps and running just After Effects. (Little to no difference)
    - Turning off motion blur, turning on 3D draft and using Proxies to simplify project. (Little to no difference)
    - Purge: All Memory. (No difference)
    - Stopping any unnecessary processes in Activity Monitor. (No difference)
    Additional Information:
-Projects seem to take a little longer than normal to open. (1-2 min max.)
Thanks in advance for any support on this issue. It's been quite a stressful timesink.

Unfortunately the problem has come back again after an hour of use this morning. To show how much RAM I have available at the time the issue appears, I've included the Memory Clean window showing 4.44GB of ram available at the time of incident. It first happened a few minutes ago with roughly 1GB available, so I and purged all memory in After Effects and cleaned the RAM with the Memory Clear app, but still no such luck.  I've been working with the same actions and material all morning so nothing new was introduced to the project when the error occurred. The work I was performing at the time was animating highlight boxes over a screen capture, but again it seems to happen regardless of what I'm working on. I'm going to restart the computer and see how long it makes it before needing another reset. Any other ideas as to what it could be? Also, if there's any more information that might be helpful to solving the issue please let me know and I'll be happy to share. Thank you again for the support!
Szalam, thank you for the link. I had been to the page previously but am going back to watch them again to see if I missed something. If it is a bottleneck, I'm not sure where it could be as of yet.
And just to make sure I'm not making any other simple mistakes VVV

The message "" RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames "'is appearing in all software is tested CS6, CC and CC2014. All software are updated in the latest versions.
Currently I have a CC account, but I can not use because of this problem.

  • CS6 - After generating 3-7 RAM previews w/multiprocessing, MP stops working

When I start AE (CS6) 10.0.2 (Win7, x64), previewing a 10-15 second scene with multiprocessing works fine and is very fast. After making 3-7 different RAM previews by pressing numpad 0, AE will no longer generate these previews, and instead will either say that it's preparing to do so, or stop at having rendered "2 frames out of x". I can see that it has stopped working because in the Task Manager, the different instances of AE will not be consuming more RAM to prepare for frame renders. AE and my system will still work fine, and I can still view the RAM previews that I made beforehand, but to get MP to work flawlessly again, I need to restart the program.
I'm using an 8 core Xeon processor @ 2.6 ghz, with hyperthreading enabled, and with 32 GB of RAM for this processor. I've read that decreasing the amount of available cores can help with AE multiprocessing. I've tried that, as well as playing with the amount of RAM that each core gets, and it still will inevitably hang. I've also read that problems like this can be due to hard drive bottlenecks. When I look at Windows Resource Monitor, this isn't a problem at all. I'm using AE to make compositions with JPEG time lapse sequences that can be anywhere from 2,000x2,000 px to 25,000x20,000 px large, and often with multiple JPEG time lapses together. It's for this project in case you're curious.
I spent a lot of money on this system, and plan to add another 8 core Xeon processor along with another 32 GB of RAM just to get faster renders (it's a dual socket ASUS board). Hopefully there's a fix for this flakey multiprocessing situation, or will be an update in the future. I think turning MP off does work, but it seems needless to do something 8 times as slow, or to have to always restart the program just to use a basic feature.:
EDIT: I should also say that rendering final compositions with multiprocessing ususally works. For 2-5 minute projects, it almost always works. Rendering 30-70 minute compositions sometimes works. Sometimes it crashes during these longer ones, and I have to try repeatedly, and eventually it'll work. Sometimes doing things like emptying the Media Cache works.

Good call. I have done that for previous projects - it works great.
Great idea re. rendering individual frames! - I hadn't thought of that.
I've tried doing a network render, but I have found that it is actually slower than using just my 8 core Xeon machine. It doesn't seem like AE is smart enough to get both computers to work out their long-term schedules for which frames to render far enough in advance. I think that the Xeon machine will load footage into the RAM to get ready to render a frame, which the second computer ends up rendering instead-thus negating that work. An alternative to this overlapping of effort could be giving the Xeon machine 3/4 of a project, and giving the second computer the last quarter, so that they wouldn't have any chance to render frames that end up being rendered by the other computer. But maybe I'm doing something wrong.
But rendering the final sequences works great, and the fact that it crashes on the longer sequences seems more to be a symptom of my workflow rather than anything else. The main thing I want to fix is this pesky multiprocessing RAM preview problem that makes me have to restart the program often.

  • "RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames" error back in CS6

    Hey everyone,
I'm quite familiar with this old error and how to avoid it and fix it but when preparing new CS6 lessons for my classes it just seems to come up again and again without any apparent relationship to the assets I'm working with. I've mostly been preparing some "What's New in CS6" lessons and have had this error come up using Evironment Layers, Raytracing lessons, Motion Tracker lessons, etc. using text, footage, solids, you name it.
The main thing that seems really telling is that before this issue happens, the blue and/or green cache bars seem to be gone within my workspace range. Purging the caches doesn't fix it but closing and reopening AE does fix it.
Using the updates AE 11.0.0.378 on OS10.6.8 MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM
All prefs are set to the defaults.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    steven

No, we have not given up on this issue.
    Here's an explanation.
This error message is After Effects telling you that it can't do a RAM preview because it can't render and preview at least two frames. This state has many causes, though:
One cause is operator error. If you have the current-time indicator at the end of the composition or work area, and you have From Current Time enabled in the Preview panel, then you'll get this message when trying to RAM preview. This is because you're already at the end of the previewable duration.
Another cause is a badly behaved plug-in that is demanding waaaaaay too much memory, so After Effects can't render two frames using this plug-in. (Video Copilot Reflection has been known to behave badly in this way, for example.)
The two above causes apply to all versions of After Effects.
A cause that only applies to After Effects CS6 is a bit more problematic and technical. In previous versions of After Effects, when you started a RAM preview, After Effects would start rendering frames and storing them in RAM without first checking to see how much memory was available; it would stop when it ran out of RAM, wherever that might be. But this was potentially a very rude thing for After Effects to do, since it might be forcing other contents of RAM used by other programs out of RAM and onto the disk (paging), which can cause some slowdowns. So, in After Effects CS6, the program first does a check to see how much RAM is available. And here's the problem: Mac OS is bad about communicating how much RAM is really available. In fact, in many cases, it says that almost no RAM is available... and After Effects CS6 believes it and reports that it doesn't have enough RAM to render and store two frames. Specifically, After Effects is asking how much RAM is "free". If you leave Mac OS running for a long time, the amount of "free" memory dwindles to nearly nothing under normal operation, as the OS accumulates a lot of stuff in "inactive" memory, which is not reported as "free". Previous verisons of After Effects would go ahead and use this "inactive" memory for RAM preview, and perhaps After Effects CS6 should, too. We're discussing how we can best fix this.
So, what can you do? There are some command-line ways of purging "inactive" memory and making it free in Mac OS. I won't recommend any specific ones here, but a quick search on the Internet will turn them up. But a guaranteed and easy way of doing this is to restart the operating system.

The project I'm having trouble with is an extremely simple lower thrids animation with just a couple solids.
I have other projects that are more complicated, and have no issues.
Is there any other info I can provide to give more insight? If so, please let me know.
I need to get this project completed and am at a total standstill. Again, I've gone through every faq, article on this problem, tweak related to this and nothing.

What happens when you create a brand new project, put in a solid, animate its position, and RAM preview it?
If that works, what happens if you import your troubled project into this brand new one?
You have restarted your computer, right?

  • Black magic and Adobe After effect cs6 Ram Preview not real time

    Hello,
I'm on a MAC PRO with the OS 10.6.8 and 8Go Ram, the problem is when i turn on my preview video on the Blackmagic the video monitor is not in real time and the after effect is so slow. When i put it off (computer monitor only) it's ok but i havn't my video monitor of course....and i need it. Is there some tricks for having my black magic (1080 i 50) ON and a RAM Preview in real time ??? ! My drivers Black magic is the 9.5.3 it's the highest driver for MAC OS 10.6.8 + ADOBE CS6+ FCP7.  Thanks for the read. ( i tried update adobe, change qt library, change aspect ratio, pixel, preview ram settings, change drivers black magic and other but nothing work )

What is the color bit depth of your project? (8, 16 or 32?) Have you changed that recently, or have you changed the frame rate or frame size of your comp?
Performance with video preview to an external monitor is almost always related to the pure bandwidth requirements of the frames you're sending to it. If the frames require more memory, it may be slower. Frame size, frame rate, and color bit depth all affect the memory requirements of the frames.
If none of those parameters has changed, troubleshoot the general performance of your machine. If there are other processes (look in Activity Monitor) that are using significant processor and/or memory resources, they may be causing a bottleneck for the frames getting out.

  • After effects cs6 ram preview saying NOT REAL TIME

Every time I try to ram preview something in AE CS6 at 59.94 fps it always previews it at only 11 fps and it says Note: zoom is not 33.3% I have my Composition settings to 59.94 fps and the quality to quarter but nothing helps? Im using 6GB of Ram and have 2 of my 4 CPU's used for it.. is there something I'm missing?

Without proper system info, comp settings, details about your footage etc. nobody can say anything. you are merely throwing us random fragments of info but leaving out the important parts.
