Unable to re-install Lion

My wife has a 2009 iMac.  We recently moved and the hraddisk must have been knocked.  Now when the machine boots, it takes along time (a grey progress bar takes about 15 minutes to move across the screen) to boot, we cannot install any new software on the machine or OS X updates.  I have tried installing diskwarrior but it will not run.  I have tried re-installing Lion but that does not run.  I have tried launching in recovery mode (cmd-r) and then erasing the harddisk - that does not work!
The machine is backing up ok to Time Machine.  What I really need some help on is (a) how to erase the harddisk in thi scenario and re-install or (b) whether we need a new hard-disk or not!
Many thanks in advance for help.
Regards
Edward

  • Unable to load many web based games after installing lion

After installing Lion, I am unable to launch several online games (Pogo e.g.). What compatibility issues are being addressed?

I didn't think reinstalling was gonna do me any good except for getting rid of every single thing I have ever installed since getting this MBP.  I'm thinking it has to be something that is on my computer causing this, especially since it only affects my ability to get to this one site and I only started seeing this problem yesterday.
So, I went ahead and disabled all my Chrome extensions and I don't have any Safari extensions at all.  That didn't fix my issue.
I've been trying to run Sophos on here, thinking that maybe I've got a Trojan or some kind of malware, but it never seems to finish a full scan of my hard drive.  That "Plugin" that I mentioned above has me very suspicious, except that whatever that is, it's been on my computer since basically when I first got it.  Maybe it's malicious, or maybe it's just a poorly named piece of software.  In any case, it got updated last night around 11pm, about the same time I noticed my problem.  After trying everything I have, it's hard for me to overlook that as coincidence.
But, where do I go to gain more information about what that could be?  I should mention that this MBP is basically my first Apple computer.  I've been a PC guy (still am mostly) forever, but I finally dove in and got a Mac to start iOS development.  So I'm sure there are ways to get more information than I am currently aware of.
Also, apologies if I posted this in the wrong forum.

Lion no longer supports PowerPC apps. If this is Microsoft Office 2008 (Entourage 2008) then you should disable the syncing services.  (I don't have Office 2008 installed anymore so I don't know exactly what it's called anymore.)  If you have Microsoft Office 2004 or earlier, then it can't be run on Lion at all since Lion removed Rosetta, which is what allowed a PPC app to run on an Intel based Mac.
Also, I believe Microsoft removed sync services from the current Outlook 2011 (which replaces Entourage) so even upgrading to a newer version of Microsoft Office will not get you back that calendar sync feature.  Supposedly Microsoft is working on a new syncing system, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Run Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities before trying to upgrade to Lion in case the startup disk needs repairing.

  • Unable to install Lion on iMac 27" i7 (2010) - no recovery system

I tried to install Lion in my 27" iMac i7 (2010), but the install process cancels, because it's unable to create the recovery-system. The suggested URL for support (www.apple.com/de/support/no-recovery) doesn't exist. What now? And better ASAP!

I managed to install Lion after doing the following steps:
    (1) Remove Boot Camp Partition - Boot Camp Assistant > Remove Windows Parition
    (2) Repair Permission - Disk Utility > Repair Permission (for main HDD)

Found out what my problem is!
In creating the Recovery HD, the installer was trying to write a new boot.ini onto my Windows partition, but I have mine formatted in NTFS, so it couldn't write anything to it. I guess that's what Apple meant by me "tampering" with my Boot Camp installation. So I guess I just have to reformat the partition in FAT32 and I should be good to go.

So if you're having the same problem as I'm, you can try these steps to install Lion.

  • Unable to install Lion - S.M.A.R.T. errors on my hard drive???

Unable to install Lion on a 27 inch 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running OS 10.6.8.  When I am presented with install options, my HD option is dimmed and there is a message: "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.  This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk."
I have not had ANY problems with this iMac since purchasing it and other than being unable to install Lion it seems to be working just fine, and yet now I'm told that my hard drive is unrepairable.
Is this a glitch in the Lion Installer or should I be more concerned?
Any info appreciated... now it seems I've paid $30 for a download I can't use.  Grrrrrr....

Check it via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) on Snow Leopard:
If that says there's a problem, too, there's likely a problem.
Be sure your backups are up-to-date, and let Apple have a look at it: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

since installing Lion, I am unable to add to iPhoto from an e mail or desk top. Something about power pc.  I thought I had a Mac! What should I do to restore the facility?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Lost applications symbol and unable to install lion

lost applications symbol and unable to install lion. Do I have to go back to original installation of operating system.  If I do will I have to reinstall all programs?

    A couple of questions:
Are you really on 10.5.8 (as shown in your profile)? You need to be on 10.6.8 to install Lion.
What exactly does the "lost applications symbol" mean? You mean it disappeared from the dock? Or is your Applications folder gone? Open a Finder window and see if you can find the Applications folder.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Unable to install Lion Recovery Update v1.0 on Mac OS 10.8.2

Hi to anyone who can help,
As the "Find My Mac" option is greyed out, I followed all the instructions on the support forums on how to get this feature, such as Verify/Repair Machintosh HD using Disk Ultilty from the Recovery partition.
Subsequently I tried to install Lion Recovery Update v1.0 from the Apple Support link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464
However, while attempting to install, it says "This update can only be installed on OS 10.7". How do I get this fixed?
Some background info, my MacBook Pro 15" (early 2011) had a replacement Hard Disk Drive and Logic Board.
    1. The replacement drive had 10.7.4 installed, and I used the recovery partition to restore to a Time Machine Backup (which was 10.8.2).
    2. Do I need to "download" the Mountain Lion package in the app store again? I see it as an available to download instead of saying "Installed".

Exit Code 6 is a generic error that indicates that the installation was not successful.
Have a look at the following document: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/errors-exit-code-6-exit.html
A quick look at the error log, indicates a permission issues. Are you logged in with an Administrator account and have sufficient privileges to install software?

  • Have OS X 10.6.3 and am unable to install App Store to install Lion or Mountain Lion Software to update to Maverick....HELP!!!!

I recently purchased the Lion and Mountain Lion software to upgrade my MacBook Pro enough to be able to install Maverick (I realized now I only need Lion but oh well).  I'm currently running on OS X 10.6.3.  I have codes to install Lion using the App Store, however  don't have the App Store installed.  I cannot install it, as it says I must be running a version of OS X 10.6.6 or higher in order to install the App Store......Am I just completely screwed here???  Does anyone know another way to install this software without the App Store?!  Thank you!!!!

    1. You don’t need Lion either.
    2. Run the Software Update pane of System Preferences or install the 10.6.8 combo updater manually.

  • Unable to install Lion

I have installed Lion on my macbook pro without issue but when I tried to install it on my (newer) iMac it keeps crashing after the install.  I have tried 3 separate installations including a complete new download of the installer.  Whenever I start up after the installation it gets as far as the toolbar and dock and then comes the black curtain and a message to manually restart the computer.  No matter how many times I try it keeps doing the same thing and ultimately I have to restore from SL 10.6.8.  I would like to use some fo the new features but if I can't get Lion installed I will have to give up altogether.
    Any Ideas?

That type of thing should only be installed if Software Update prompts an install since they are machine specific.

  • Unable to install Lion. Installer says disk is used for Time Machine backups. But it's my Mac's HD.

On attempt to install Lion from CD, the installer says: "Mac OSX cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD". This disk is used for Time Machine backups."
I have an external drive that I've been using for Time Machine backups, but it stopped functioning recently and I have not replaced it.
    Is there a workaround?

  • Unable to install Lion due to unable to unmount disk

    Need urgent help here.
I want to reformat my hard disk due to some reasons, and I tried pressing on Command-C while it boots up. Then I got into the Mac OS X Utilites, and then click on Disk Utility to erase my hard disk. Inside I have 1 hard disk named as Hitachi with a partition named Macintosh. I tried to erase the Hitachi one, but it says it couldn't unmount disk.
So I made a call to Apple and they told me to do a secured erase on my Macintosh HD Partition. Did that, and tried to install Lion to it, but I got this error.
"Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact AppleCare".
Anyone could help on this problem?
Coz I would need to wait for another 12 hrs or so before I could call to Apple.
    Please help!!

But spotlight find it isn't it?
