Unable to read pdf in iBooks on MacBook Pro

Trying to use iBooks for the first time to read some PDFs, as I was unhappy with reading them in Adobe Acrobat and wanted to see if iBooks would offer a better experience.
I added the PDFs (purchased from Lonely Planet) into iBooks. However, every time I click on a file within the iBooks library, it would launch Adobe Acrobat Pro or Preview and open the PDF in one of these applications.
Next, I located the files in Finder (in the iBooks folder) and in the Get Info box, I told it to "Open with: iBooks.app". No effect.
Next, I try doing the same with the original files (in the Get Info box, I told it to "Open with: iBooks.app") before adding them to the iBooks library. Now, clicking on them in the iBooks library, it tries to launch Preview and then I get an error message:
Why???

FWIW, rEFInd 0.7.5 includes a fix that should make it more reliable on the Mac models that had problems with multiple EFI drivers installed. I've received a couple of reports that this fix helps, but I have yet to see enough reports to be convinced that it fixes issues on 100% of affected computers. (Apple's firmware varies so much from one model to another that it's impossible to say with certainty how something will work based on sampling just a couple of computers.)

I am confused about something.  How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro?  I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad.  The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it.  Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out.  The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for.  Is this a stupid question?

Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

    More information would be good.
What do you mean by "unable to read PDF's". How are you trying to read them and what exactly happens when you try?
so thought I would download the latest version of Adobe Reader.  It will not install.
    Again, what exactly is happening?
And yes, the latest version should be compatible with your OS.

Transferring your prepaid cellular data account depends on your carrier. AT&T lets you move it yourself when you go to Cellular Data in Settings and log into your account with your previous AT&T user name and password. For iPads with Sprint service, you can set up an account on the new iPad and contact Sprint Customer Care (888-211-4727 and go through the menus) to deactivate the old plan and get credit for unused service. For Verizon, call the company’s customer service number for mobile broadband support (800-786-8419) and ask to have your account transferred.

  • Reading PDF in iBook

If I try to read pdf in iBook - it is  opening them in preview.
Changing the default app to read pdf to iBook gets iBook into infinite loop!
What is the procedure to *open* pdf in iBook and not in preview?
IBook is not opening any pdf.

yes, it is so annoying, it crashed my ibook, it should just SIMPLY open in ibook, feel a bit disappointing.

  • Unable to read PDF files created by FTP Adapter

    Hi,
I am unable to read pdf files generated by FTP Adapter with its default settings.
Can anybody guide me how to proceed with it. I guess I need to change something in encoding mechanism in FTP Adapter Outbound Connection Pool, but not sure what has to be.
    Thanks,
    Richa

    Hi all,
I have got its solution. I was unable to read .pdf files because FTP adapter  was sending the files just by changing the extension from .txt /.xml to .pdf that is the reason that it was not readable.
We had to write an java code to convert .xml file to .pdf file and then paas it to FTP ADapter.
    Thanks

  • Unable to read PDF attachments past 1st page in iOS4

    I have upgraded to iOS4
Now I am unable to read PDF attachments past the 1st page.
I have received a number of suggestions (like resetting the phone) but to no avail.
Anybody else with the same problem?

    Thanks for the valiant attempt!
I uninstalled Stanza and hard reset the iPhone (Home+Sleep until the Apple appears)
I tested a couple of new messages with fresh PDF attachments, and the problem
    did not go away.
At this point I may have to consider some sort of software corruption with my iOS4
    Regards

It said that 11 is not compatible to my system.
What exactly is "it"; can you post a screenshot of that?
    Other things you can try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html
...or wait and see if the next Reader version fixes the problem (likely to be released later today).

  • I am unable to read PDF messages in my iPad

I am unable to read PDF messages on my iPad even though I do have the Adobe Reader installed.

Thank you for your quick response. Nothing happened when I opened it. Just before I posted my concern I registered for Adobe, and voila, I went to my message and it opened. Just think that it was meant to be.

can you use ibook on macbook pro? If so, how do i read the free books from itune?

"if you can use the Kindle app from iPad to Macbook, shouldn't you be able to do the same with an apple product?"
    No.
The kndle app provides this feature.
    Ibooks does not.
" I would rather buy books from iBooks"
You can buy form whomever you like.
" but not being able to go from device to device like in Kindle is a problem."
You can read iboks on ipod touch/ipad/iphone, just not your computer.

    That is indeed very strange.
Do you have Flip4Mac installed?, this seems to be the cause, read all the posts here for complete removal.

  • How may I transfere PDF files from my MacBook Pro to my IPAD

How may I transfer PDF files from my MacBook Pro to my IPAD

There are a number of methods, including via synch to iTunes on a computer and emailing them to yourself.
I prefer using DropBox, which allows me to store them in the cloud and download only when needed, and send them to the app I choose (plus I do not synch my iPad to itunes). I typically use GoodReader or Adobe Reader, but any app that can read PDFs is typically available in the menu. You would need to install DropBox on the Mac as well as download the app on the iPad. Both are free.

  • I have read that new purchases of macbook pro will get free upgrade to LION OS. When and how do I go about this?

I have read that new purchases of macbook pro will get free upgrade to LION OS. When and how do I go about this?

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/06/06lion.html
The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request.
Currently that's the only information available. I suspect more will be posted as we get closer to launch.

  • USB-3 card reader that is compatible with MacBook Pro (Retina) and Mountain Lion

Can anybody recommend a USB-3 based CompactFlash memory card reader that works with the MacBook Pro (Retina) and Mountain Lion (or, at least, Lion)?
    Thanks in advance...

Thanks for your reply, Clinton. But I already have two readers that are USB-2 compatible. Now I need the one like I described above. I am using only the fastest CF cards available.
I have read some user reports (on Amazon) on two readers relevant to my needs - SanDisk and Lexar - but I'm still not sure whether they are fully compatible with the Retina MacBook and Mountain Lion. As a matter of fact, I doubt it...
