Unable to read shared cd drive

I recently acquired a MBP without optical drive and want to use another MBP's drive to read disks.
Both MBPs are running Mavericks;
I have turned on CD/DVD sharing in the MBP with the drive;
have enabled Remote Disk in the Finder window of the recieving MBP;
both machine are on the same LAN (Time Machine)
CD it is not a protected - just data with PDF files etc.
Even though the remote MBP appears in Finder, when I click on it all I get is "Waiting for disk drive". (The disk opens fine in the remote MBP).
Am I missing a step in the setup?

I don't like putting two drives on the same bus, so I would move one of your drives to the front drive cage. And, if Apple Hardware Test doesn't find any problem with the Mac itself, you are going to have to initialize it.
You may not feel you need new drives, but 3 yrs for ATA and you can expect possible problems. Having two backup sets - one of which is always off line - should be mandatory.
If you can't repair it from your boot drive, and you have tried "a few things" (always helps to know so we don't waste time with what has been tried) like Disk Warrior, what is the SMART status? time to buy a new drive - even if it can be repaired. If in your "tried a few things" like to erase/partition the drive?

Unable to read shared variable in signal express

Dear all,
I am trying to read a shared variable with data type 'Array of Double Waveform' and the signal express gives a network variable error stating
"The data type of specified shared variable xxxxxx is not supported".
could any one explain why is this not supported or suggest a work around.

Hi Munir,
the datatype you want to use is not supported in Signal Express. So if you choose this datatype you always get this error massage. As a work around I can recomment you to take the Double Waveform datatype this is supported, create a shared variable for each array element (waveform) and read this variable in Signal Express. This should help you out.

Unable to read an "iCloud Drive Saved" html file on my Iphone

Hi,
I have saved an HTML file on my MAC to my iCloud Drive Docs folder.
Now I woud like to view that on my iphone.
I go to Pages, I can see the file, but cannot open it

Firefox reports that it is my default browser. I changed the default browser to Chrome and then back to Firefox, in case that's what you meant by "redo." Right-clicking and picking Firefox in the Open With menu works, but double-clicking the file or just picking Open in the right-click menu does not.
I don't know why this is. Could it be due to a version update? I've noticed that Google Notifier's "Go to Inbox" no longer opens up Gmail in Firefox either.

Hi, I'm having a weird recurring problem - I have an external FireWire400 LaCie D2 drive that's been working fine for 2 years but now, about once a week, I get an error message upon startup that says «Unable to read Drive...»
I have to repair permissions using Disk Utility and it will work fine ... for a week, and then it happens again.
I can't link the bug to any system upgrade, so does this mean my drive is showing its age, about to die on me or is just in need of a reformat?
Being an external drive, I can't confirm via the SMART Status in Disk Utility ...

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

the last step was upgraded java jdk to version 6 update 26 then run
Then running this command from appTier
perl <AD_TOP>/bin/admkappsutil.pl
then move the appsutil.zip to DB tier and unzip
unzip -o appsutil.zip
BUT WHEN RUN adautoconfig on dbtier always got this error.
the adautocfg.sh in appTier was fine.
Can you give some suggestion as what was wrong here?

Satellite M40X-184's DVD/CD-RW drive unable to read CDs

I have a three month old Satellite M40X-184 with Mat****a UJDA760 DVD/CD-RW drive. Last few days the optical drive is unable to read any type of CDs. But it can read DVDs. Can somebody please tell me what's wrong with it? Is the drive broken? Is it necessary to replace the DVD/CD-RW with a new drive? Thanks.

It is not easy to say if the drive is defective but you should anyway contact your local dealer. The warranty is valid and if there is some technical problem the drive will be replaced.
I dont know if this can help but you can try to remove the drive from device manager and restart the unit. The drive will be recognized and installed properly. If there is the problem with original music CDs you should really contact the local dealer.
Before the unit will be checked I believe that the best way to check it properly is to preinstall the unit with recovery media. The same thing will be done by technicians before hardware replacement. If you want you can do it too.

MSI 945P IDE 2 unable to read PATA drives

Hi,
I am trying to use the IDE 2 slot to read my PATA drives but it is always not appearing. I think i have disabled the secondary channel. How do i enable it?
Also, I am now connecting my PATA HDD in the IDE 1 slot and they are working fine, however, i am connecting my DVD burner and cd rom on the IDE 2 slot.
Everything is working but the Cdrom drives and DVD burner drive is not DMA enabled, therefore, reading speeds and burning speeds are very slow. Any way to rectify this matter??

I have tried the force DMA if Available step but it does not really work..
I have also tried putting the CDROM drives on IDE1 and placing the two PATA HDD drives on IDE 2.
However, I do not know for what reason, the hard drives are not detected.
If i place the HDD on IDE 2. do i definately need to use RAID? There is an IDE mode setting in the BIOS which has a selection of IDE or RAID.
If i create a raid array, my data will be lost on the HHD right?? which hmmm... i dun think i can afford to.....

Shared hard drive disappearing after airport update

My shared hard drive attached to my airport extreme will mount but afterwards gives me the error message "The alias “xxxxxx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." Also the drive is listed under my shared section in the finder window but when selected gives a share-point icon and doesn't allow access. This has been occurring after the airport utility update. Any information would be greatly appreciated....and I just got the access via the internet working and now this - bummer.
workaround: I have found that selecting the drive in the finder window then deselecting and selecting a second time will give me access to the drive but thats a pain in the rear.

"It will not let me verify the drive" means that I am unable to verify the drive.
Today, I installed the security update on my 24" intel imac, that I've owned since April. I restarted the machine. Up came the folder icon with the question mark. I restarted a second time and the same thing occurred. I then inserted the installer disc that came with the computer and I was able to start up the computer that way. Using the Disc Utility, I attempted to verify or repair the hard drive, but all those options were ghosted ("it will not let me verify the hard drive") Also, while there, I saw that the hard drive partitions were not recognized: there were two partitions (1: 500GB; 2: 198GB) but now it was registering a single drive at 698GB of 750.
I then called Apple support. We reset the PRAM. We did a hard drive test (restart holding "d") and that test produced no error. We then tried unplugging all peripherals, including the power supply, and letting it sit for a few moments. The imac restarted to the same results. Finally, the tech suggested attempting an archive install, which was not available as an option. Further, the install disc did not detect an available hard drive for installation, so the option to reinstall the OS was not an option, either.
The tech said my only option is to take it in for service, leaving me unable to work for four to five days (if I'm lucky), as they won't get to it until Monday, and even then they're backed up.

Shared Print Driver (Fuji Xerox)

I deployed 7units of Fuji Xerox Multi Function Printer.
Current OS 2008 R2. basically i share out 7 drivers 5 unit is running same driver. Users able to map to 4 unit. 1 of the shared printer driver unable to connect when i \\servername and double click connect it just state installing drivers next it prompted
unable to connect.
Any ways to tackle the issue? Which area should i look at..

Send a list of the drivers installed on the print server. Use PrintManagement.msc and export the list of drivers from the utility and copy the list back here.

Creating a folder alias on a shared network drive

Hi,
I have a folder that is housed on my computer that I would like an alias of on my company's shared network drive. I will have access to the shared network drive from my home computer either through Citrix or a VPN, so I would like the alias on that drive so that it will reflect any changes I make to the files within either from my work or from my home computer. My question therefore is, how do I create an alias of a folder on a shared network drive? I tried creating an alias on my local drive and then dragging it to the shared network drive, but that just copied the folder and removed the alias.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nevermind. I must have copied over the original folder the first time instead of the alias, as a simple drag and drop of an alias folder just worked fine for me.

Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension...

I had previously installed the HP Color LaserJet 3600 driver from the install CD under Tiger. I recently did an archive and install of Leopard, then ran all the system updates. (Currently at 10.5.5)
When I insert the 3600 CD, though, I get a bunch of jibberish (parts of images, etc.) and a MAC OS X directory. The installer inside that directory attempts to be opened with Script Editor, though, and gives an error: "Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable." followed by "The document 'HP Color LaserJet v5.6.1.069' could not be opened."
Previously this would launch the HP installation program that would install the driver. Now, it's like it's not a recognized program or something. I downloaded the driver from the HP website to try it that way (clj3600MacOSX.dmg) with the same result. The .dmg file opens a disk image with the "HP Color LaserJet v.5.6.1.069" file in it...same result. Cannot open.
I know this program ran fine under Tiger...and a co-worker got it to run after doing an upgrade to Leopard (instead of archive and install.)
When I downloaded the HP 4300 installer dmg, it launches a .mpkg file and Get Info says it's set to open with "Installer (default)". The 3600 file, though is set to open with "Script Editor (default)". I've looked to set it to Installer, but don't know where it is...it's not in Applications or Utilities folder.
I then right clicked on the installer file and selected "Show Package Contents". In the window that was displayed, there was a Contents folder. Inside that folder was a file called "HP Color LaserJet v5.6" with no file extension (Get Info doesn't show an extension either,) but it has a VISE logo. Opening that file launches the VISE installer and performs the setup.
So, by jumping through hoops and getting lucky, I was able to install the driver.
The bigger issue, though, is why the installation CD and/or .dmg file downloaded from HP's website cannot run the installer as usual...why are they set to open with Script Editor as the default application...and how can I fix it so that other disks won't have the same problem?

Unable to load HP printer driver-Error message!

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can be of any assistance.
I recently purchased a HP Photosmart 2575 all-in-one printer and installed the necessary software, which said it was successfully installed. However, whenever I boot up the G3 I keep getting the following message 'Unable to load the printer drive, open the applications Get Info dialog and increase the preferred memory size. If this does not help try quitting all other applications or reinstalling the printer software.'
After clicking ok on this message about four times the message goes and I am able to print fine. Just wondering why this is happening. I have increased the memory allocation and also turnt on the virtual memory to see if this makes any difference, but all to no avail. I have also uninstalled and then reinstalled the software to see if this makes a difference, but that didn't help either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: The printer is connected via ethernet on my router to enable me to print from another machine

Use Techtool Lite or Trash*Desktop (TD may delete Finder comments )to rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Does a better job than manually & you avoid all the finger gymnatics. You just have to hold down the shift key to shut off extensions.
Restart to turn the extensions back on again.

Unable to Disconnect (Eject) Network Drive (Share) 10.4.8

Help, please.
Background:
We are running a MacMini in our office that has SAMBA running to share files across both mac and pc space. Works fine, never have a problem with it.
Problem:
However, since the update to 10.4.8, I have now seen (about 4-5 times) the following problem: After being logged onto the Samba Network Share (Network Drive) for the workday (using Airport), the client machine is unable to eject/disconnect the share. In the end, the finder hangs so bad, that we have to power off the mac.
Regression:
(1) I have seen this problem on both a TiBook (10.4.8) and a 1 week old MacBookPro 15.4".
(2) Typically, on first attempt to eject the network drive, I get the finder response that the drive is busy and cannot be ejected. I can quit all open applications, but this does release the drive.
(3) On the second/third attempt, I continue to get the same error message. I can sleep the machine, but I still can't eject the drive. On occasion, the finder hangs and I get spinning BBOD.
(4) On one occasion, I was able to shut Airport off and after a LONG wait, the finder gave up and disconnected the drive (this is similar to how it used to behave in 10.4.7. Not wonderful, but slow and functional).
(5) However, the last few times when Airport was disconnected (or the machine was sleeped and then awoken elsewhere) the spinning BBOD remained and the finder was completely unresponsive. In this case, I am unable to even force quit the finder, turn airport back on, or anything at all. This results in me having to force power off the machines...an embarrasment for a mac enthusiast.
Questions:
(1) Any thoughts?
(2) Is there a command line tool that allows me to "snoop" and figure out which process is tying up the network shares?
(3) After the force power-off, which logfile or crashreporter should I be looking at so that I can send it in to help track the problem down?

Thanks for the link to Applejack. I've run it twice (once manual, and once in full AUTO deep clean). It fixed some pref's, but didn't find any problems with the disk or anything.
Let's see where that puts us...
Further Regression
(1) I can re-create the problem by inserting a CD-ROM or connecting to a network SAMBA share.
(2) On a FRESH BOOT, I can eject, re-insert and eject the CD-ROM with no problem at the login screen. However, once I've logged into an account (any account will do), I am no longer able to eject the CD even if I log back off.
(3) I have noticed that when I try to eject the CD-ROM I get another instance of diskarbitrationd launching (for 2 instances total). Not sure if this is normal or not.
(4) I have tried to run "sudo diskarbitrationd -d" from terminal to get some debug info, but it always responds with "service is already running". Even a -SIGHUP won't allow me to relaunch diskarbitrationd (since it autolaunches immediately)
(5) I trolled through /var/log for anything interesting but could only find something in the system.log. Mar 8 08:37:22 MyDrive kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error. The interesting thing is disk0s3 is my internal drive.
(6) I took a look at pdisk to see what I could see. rdisk0s3 is definitely the main partition on my internal HD. It is unable to read the partition map of the CD (rdisk1). I'm not sure if this is normal for CD-ROMs or not.
(7) I've trolled through /etc/mach_init.d and a few other places where diskarbitrationd things lie. Not sure what to look for but didn't find anything interesting.
So....if anybody has an idea on what service to look at or try to get debug info out of (or how to get diskarbitrationd to actually enter debug mode...) I'd be hella thankful.
