Unable to Reboot After Software Update - Unable to Reinstall Mac OS 10.4.10

Hello,
I just bought a Macmini 9 months ago, and I believe I may need to either erase the HD to reinstall the original Mac OS (10.4.10) or else replace it. However, I am not familiar with Mac and don't know how to reformat the disk. Can anyone help?
Each time there is a software update, I experience problems starting up from the HD. After the last update a few days ago, I am unable to start up from the HD at all. I tried using the original install CD 1 to reinstall Mac OS 10.4.10 with archiving. However, I received an error saying "unable to install because there is a newer version already installed." Therefore, I tried to start up from the HD again by pressing Option key at startup, but the Macmini continously turned off by itself without rebooting. I tried reinstalling Mac OS with the erase option, but it failed. After that, the Mac OS install CD1 only gives me the option to reinstall additional applications, but when I select continue, there is not HD shown to install the applications.
Disk Utility First Aid on CD1 was unable to repair the disk. I received the following messages: "Invalid sibling link", "Volume check failed", "The underlying task reported failure on exit", "1 HFS volume checked", "1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
At the bottom of the page under Disk Utility, the following information about the disk is available. Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled); Capacity: 111.5 GB (119,690,149,888 Bytes); Available: - ; Used: - ; Number of Files: - ; Owners Enabled: - ; Number of Folders: - .
System Profiler is able to identify type, disk identifier, file system, etc. It shows the volume supports journaling, but is not journaled.
Scan Image for Restore shows Library_Preferences (Empty), and Root applications are all grayed out.
I performed the Apple Hardware Test (ver 3A129) by pressing D at startup. The test ran for 5 minutes and 6 seconds. It reported "No trouble found".
It seems the HD is empty, but the install CD is not offering any options to reinstall the OS, only the additional applications. I believe it is a partition error, but I am not familiar with Mac and hesitate to proceed any further.
How do I reformat the disk so that I can reinstall the original Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5?
Your help is sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

Good news!
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

when it goes to reboot, it loads like normal but the grey apple turns into a crossed out circle. like a no smoking sign minus the cigarette. haha

I haven't had that problem myself, but the next time you're led to reinstall Mac OS X, once you pass the language selection screen you should see a "Utilities" menu bar item that will let you run Disk Utility. Do that and invoke "Repair Disk" and "Repair Permissions", then see if you're able to boot from your internal disk.

  • Unable to restart after software update 10.3.1.1779

I am unable to get  my Z10 to restart after this update.
I have searched endless avenues and have now resorted to deleteing the notifcations for this update when they come in, I have downloaded and installed it, but when asked to restart, my phone stalls on the loading screen forever, the longest I have waited for it to restart is 3 days, with 24 hours of that on 99%.
I am now the but of all phone related jokes as everyone I know has an IPHONE that works perfectly, but I insist on keeping this awful Z10 becuse I dont want to join their rank....too tink I spent £500 on this when it came out (more fool me)
It would seem that the general consensus is, I will have to go to the inconveience of taking my Z10 in to a phone shop, were they will send it off to BB for the update to be installed.
PS; Blacberry's forum is as hard to navigate as the phone is to actually get working proberly.

This has been the worst software update I have ever encountered. My Q10 is completely unreliable and I am going to switch to another device in the morning. I have restored factory settings and have successfully wiped the app to sync my shared Google Calendars, the z and y keys have swapped on my keypad and the Q10 still turns itself off arbitrarily, wipes all text and phone messages and can't recall what network I'm on or what my home wifi settings are.

  • Q10 stuck at reboot after software update - PLEASE HELP

    Hello
I was checking for software updates for my Q10 yesterday and was informed that there is a new update
I clicked on download and install, and it asked me to reboot when it was done. After that it loaded very slowly until it reached 99% 6 hours later and it remained like that for 12 hours
What I did this morning was remove the battery and sim card and I reinserted the battery, the same thing happened again and it is moving very very slowly
Can you please help?? I would rather find away in which I do not loose my BBM contacts since I have not backed up my phone...are the contacts stored on my blackberry ID or will I loose them if I reset the phone?
    Thank you very much

It finally powered on after 3 battery pulls, but now it does not make or receive calls (((
Everytime I connect it to blackberry link it says software update available, so I clicked on install, it said downloading update and then nothing happens, the download bar becomes full then nothing changes
I also tried to reload device software, i got a message saying checking repair software and it stayed like that for 3 hours then the device rebooted but nothing happened at all
I even tried redoing the software update from the phone itself 3 times, everytime it would say update successful but the phone would still not make or receive calls
Please help I dont know what to do....could the problem with blackberry link be that im using it on a mac??
    I appreciate your help

  • IPhone 4 frozen in reboot after software update

In the process of updating phone to iOS 7, (which has missed a couple of updates) it is frozen with apple logo and status bar on screen after software downloaded and installed. The phone has been connected to a computer for this update. How do I reboot?

    See Here  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
You may need to try this More than Once...
Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...
But... if the Device has been Modified... this will Not necessarily work.

  • Constant Reboot after software update

I just performed Software Update on my Leopard MacBook Pro and now it's in a constant reboot cycle. The grey boot up screen displays for 90 secs or so and then reboots and the cycle repeats. There were three programs for update but the only two I remember were iTunes & Front Row. How do I recover? Thanks.
    Kevin

Just to add some more detail to the issue:
I've reset the NVRAM by holding down the Option/Control - PR at bootup and it seemed to work in that it then rebooted again. But nothing else but the continuing reboot cycle.
Next I tried to get into Safe mode by holding down the Shift key on bootup but this did not work. I inserted the Leopard DVD on bootup but it just spins.
    Help!!!

  • PowerMac Desktop keeps rebooting after Software Update (Java, security, QT)

Since my Software Update through Apple yesterday, my Desktop keeps "rebooting" every minute or so. Any ideas?

  • Force software reboots after Software Updates install, and do a WUA rescan upon reboot and install any remaining patches?

Running SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 and having two big issues with SUP that impacted us severely with the February patches.  An RDP patch from November broke our 2-factor authentication (2FA) method, so we stopped deployment until Microsoft could fix the
patch.  Rather than fixing the patch...they made a patch for the patch.
We divided our servers up into multiple Day/Time maintenance windows, like SUN, MON, TUE, and from 0200 to 0600 AM, and we run deployments weekly as needed.
There doesn't seem to be a way in SUP to "let SCCM control reboot" and ALWAYS reboot (whether the patches request it or not), and, as a result, we seem to have an awful lot of servers that are stuck at "reboot pending" after patch installation,
and have actually taken to using a third-party program to reboot the servers.
There also doesn't seem to be a way to force SCCM SUP to rescan the computer after the patch is applied until after a day...or, for servers, a week (from Mon to Mon, for example).
What happened this time around was that the first patch installed and broke 2FA, the second patch is not recognized as being needed until after a reboot and rescan--since that did not occur, it took up to a week to get the second patch installed (IF the
server ever was rebooted), which...was unacceptable.
    Soooo...how can I:
         1.  ALWAYS force SCCM to reboot after patching (60-min countdown if user logged-on), just like we do with our normal deployment advertisement, package, program.
         2.  Force a WUA scan after this reboot, so, if remaining patches from this patch group are needed, they get detected and installed, and hopefully this will all work within the 4-hour window (we might be able to extend it earlier,
    but, not past 0600).
    Thanks!

Thanks, Don.  OK, if there is a "reboot required" returned at the end of the patch deployment...shouldn't the computer then reboot?  We see a large number of computers with "reboot required" that never reboot.  Is there something wrong in
the setup to stop a reboot from occurring?
    Thanks.
It looks like you've continued the conversation with Jason and it's taken an interesting turn ;)
But, in the case where a reboot_required is the returned resultcode, CCM will look to your MW and deployment settings, and the context of the installation event (enforcement etc), to determine if the reboot request should be honoured or refused.
You should be able to see all the to-and-fro of this logic within the client logfiles, as it's occurring (or after the event).
If you do some spelunking into the logfiles, don't forget to look at windowsupdate.log (the WUAgent logfile), as that can, with the CCM logfiles, paint a more complete picture of the "flow of things".
This does all assume that the client machine is in a healthy and predictable state to begin with.
If there is already some other pending_reboot hiding in the background, or, WUAgent is running with it's own configuration (potentially fighting with CCM), or, it's Win8 with the "Automatic Maintenance" scheduled task, you can get some unexpected behaviour
(but usually that is unexpected reboot, rather than unexpected no-reboot)

  • Unable to reboot after installing updates

I have a MacBook Pro which I purchased last summer.  Unfortunately, I don't know the version of the OS.  Today, I installed the recommended updates and now it won't reboot; i.e. Apple logo displayed with the dial spinning.  Any suggestions appreciated.

    Here's what I've found:
    (1) I cannot run Disk Utility because I don't have my install disk handy
    (2) I cannot run Repair Permissions because Apple does not make a separate ISO available to fix their mistakes
    (3) There does not appear to be a wat to back out updates (ie, no Add/Remove Programs)
I was able to boot into safe mode and perform:
        > sudo bash
        $ chmod -R root /
Amazingly, the command ran to completion. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. As soon as some spare cycles were available (interesting indeed!), the machine shutdown.
+1 to Apple engineers for creating a broken patch
+1 to Apple quality assurance for letting the junk out the door
+1 to Apple, for not offering an ISO to fix a broken installation
+1 to Steve, who has managed to keep his anti-trust lock on the hardware and broken software
    Great job, Apple

  • How long to reboot after software update?

I just did a system update and it had to reboot when finished. It got as far as a blue screen with a spinning gear-wheel and that's it. It has been like this for 15 minutes. Is this normal? Will it hurt if I use the power button to shut it off, then restart? It has never taken this long before.

I assume by blue screen and spinning gear you are referring to the shutdown portion of the restart rather than the restart itself.  If this be the case then 15 minutes seems a bit long.  Normally, I don't like recommending abnormal shutdowns because of the possible problems they can cause, but in this case it should be OK.  However, I strongly suggest you first boot from your Snow Leopard DVD and repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
This will hopefully assure no disk damage from the abnormal shutdown.  If all is OK then restart the computer normally.

  • IMac G4 in 10.3.8 (I believe) won't reboot after software update

Three or four weeks ago, my Mac came up with available Software Upgrades (I believe one was a new version of iTunes, and there was something else). I just told it to download and went about my business; when it wanted to reboot, I told it to go ahead.
    I haven't seen it since.
I've zapped the PRAM. I've tried rebooting in Safe Mode. It just goes back to the gray apple screen. I've tried opening the CD tray to see if I could boot from a startup CD, and the keyboard responds correctly to the command-option-P-R and shift keys, but not to the CD tray button, and I don't see another way into that tray. (I'm also not finding my 10.3 disks, but that's my problem, not yours.)
This is obviously not my primary computer, since I haven't needed it in several weeks; I'm not 100% sure it's in 10.3.8, but I think that's what I saw on the About screen last time I looked. I hope that machine's not dead and buried, but if it is, so be it; I just have some data I need to get from it, and I can't get it to boot so I can pull the files.
    Ideas?
    Thanks for your time!

I am not sure this will work as you can't boot properly, but try restarting it holding down the mouse to open the CD tray.
If you have found your install CD's and it is possible to insert it in the now open CD, run Repair Permissions and Repair Disk from the Disk Utility from the CD.
Without the CD, perhaps you can get some benefit from this article.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.
I would concentrate on the fsck section.

  • Droid Maxx keeps rebooting after software update

Since the upgrade on 11/1/14 to 23.3.24, my droid maxx keeps rebooting. It has done this about 15 times since yesterday evening. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? It is also telling me that I need my GPS on and set to high accuracy mode in order to detect my location. Before the upgrade, I only turned my location on when I used the navigation app. Any ideas?

The Latest update is suppose to get the Phone prepared for Verizon's voLTE  it's hard to say how long it will be till all is functioning correctly with the system and the phones but, if your issues continue & it makes the phone unusable then I'd see if you can get another Droid Maxx hopefully one with out the new update..
My Current: Version is 21.11.21. my Maxx is still running with no issues

  • What to do after Software Updates... (new mac user)

Greetings, Enjoying my Mac after years of Windows Certifications.
This is a simple question that I feel I already know the answer to, however I would like confirmation.
After doing some recent updates, 2 .app were downloaded per instructions and ran Both the MBAir Firmware update, and Bluetooth Update. However these update applications are still in my Utilities folder. They have been successfully installed. (Confirmed)
Is it safe to move these .app to the trash? Or are they contain possible uninstall/go back information much like Windows does with the hidden NT$ files on the root of the system folder after doing Windows Updates.

I believe you can remove these files once they're installed. They can always be downloaded again if they're needed. Similar to the iPod updates, when you download them they're stored in the Utilities folder, but only the latest one is really needed, and even that can be re-downloaded if needed.
    Enjoy your Mac!

  • Unable to connect to wireless network after software update

on updating the software on my Ipad 3 I am unable to connect to my office wireless network

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
