Unable to record Windows Explorer

I am creating my first ever project in Adobe Captivate 3. Is there a know issue with not being able to record anything within Windows Explorer or is it something that I am doing wrong?
Anyone know how to get round this?

Hi there
When you say "unable to record" that may mean several things.
Are you expecting Captivate to automatically record and it isn't?
Is Captivate listing any sort of error?
What exactly is happening?
Captivate does an amazing job with what it does. But in some cases it is unable to sense things. For example, you may be using Windows Explorer, but what is being presented that you are trying to record? Maybe Captivate just doesn't understand it.

    Hi iTunes-1,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The error message you posted indicates a possible firmware update is needed for iTunes for Windows to work with your CD drive.
iTunes for Windows: Updating the firmware on your CD or DVD drive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201852
Having outdated firmware can cause issues using CDs and DVDs with iTunes for Windows. Firmware is a type of software stored in a chip in hardware that can sometimes be updated.Identifying drives and firmware versions
To run CD Diagnostics, follow the steps in this document.
After following the steps to run CD Diagnostics linked above, look at section three to find out more about your optical drive(s).
Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Unable to delete songs from IPOD except through Windows Explorer

    hello,
I have a first gen 1 gb Ipod Nano ver Ver 1.3.1 modem #
    ma352ll.
About a week ago i tried to free up some space on my ipod by removing some songs. Since I began using my ipod I have just felt more comfortable manually managing my songs. So what i would normally do is simply delete the song from the music folder on my ipod and it is usually gone. (I know that simply deleting from a playlist does not delete from ipod). When I tried deleting some songs I found that the available space on my ipod did not change and obviously could nto add any more songs. When I went into windows explorer, in the music folder for my ipod, I i found the songs I wanted to delete (they were large files because they were podcasts). When I deleted the file from windows explorer the space was freed up on my ipod.
I updated itunes and restored my ipod. I am not using itunes 7. Today I tried adding 7 podcasts to my ipod manually thru itunes and only 5 show up in my music folder, however, i can find all 7 in windows explorer AND all 7 in the playlists I added them to. They play perfectly fine when I play them, but obviously if I tried to delete the 2 suspect files from my playlist they would still be hidden somewhere on my ipod and I can only delete them through windows explorer.
I am not sure what to do at this point, is there anybody who can shed some light on what I am doing wrong or if this is a known issue with itunes and and 1st gen nanos. It's getting annoying to have to play each file in winamp from windows explorer to find the song titles I want to delete and keep the rest. The folders show up as F00, F001, etc... and the songs show up as QVRD.mp3. I havew to play the file QVRD.mp3 throguh winamp so the name of the song comes up so I know if that is the hidden file or one of the others thats how up in itunes that I want to keep. Any ideas out there?

  • Photoshop CS5.5 - Unable to select Open With...Photoshop or Illustrator in Windows Explorer

    Hi,
When I am in Windows Explorer or just in a Folder and I  Right-Click  on say a .jpg file and select Open With...  I am not able  to select  Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for that matter.  I have  Dreamweaver CS4  and that shows up as an option.  I have gone through  the process of trying to add the  Adobe Photoshop .exe file, but it  still doesn't work.  However, if I open Adobe Bridge, I am able to  select Photoshop or Illustrator to open a file.  Is this  connected to  my install or is there something else going on?  I did  uninstall an  ancient version of Adobe Photoshop 7.0 that I've had for  years, but  that was prior to installing Production Premium CS5.  Could  that have  caused an issue?  I read that uninstalling an old Photoshop  can cause  problems like this.
If that is the case, how do I fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Production premium CS5 with windows7 64 bit system. On right clicking the file in explorer,I am able to choose my default programme in which the file is to be opened and it is opening accordingly.
I have Cs4 photoshop in another system with XP professional and here also the above option is available.I wonder how u will not have that feature or how it will not work inspite of having it.___Bosu Babu

  • Unable to save document - Read Only or Open by another user error occurs when PDF is opened from Windows Explorer

Adobe Pro XI  - using Windows 7 Pro OS
When a PDF document is opened from Windows Explorer, and pages are added, deleted, notations made, any type of changes, it cannot be saved until Windows Explorer is fully closed.  If you try to save the document, you receive the following error - "The document could not be saved.  The file may be read-only, or another user may have it opened.  Please save the document with a different name or in a differnt folder. "   I have confirmed the document is not read only, it is not open by another user, and it is not open multiple times.  Once you fully close Windows Explorer, and try to save the document, it saves without a problem.
Are there settings in either Adobe Pro XI or Windows that will allow you to save documents without closing Windows Explorer first?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.  This error is a frustration since I open all my documents through Windows Explorer.

I can't open pdfs using windows explorer. I double click, nothing happens, and after ten minutes I get the error message "fatal error Acrobat failed to connect to DDE server."
I can however open the file if I open it in acrobat, although it is very slow.
I always download the latest version of acrobat indeed did so last week. I'm on windows 7. I've had acrobat for many years on this machine and OS and never had this problem.

    Hey Eric,
I’d suggest you to uninstall Adobe Reader XI using this cleaning tool Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs and re-install Adobe Reader using this link Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions to fix the issue.
Re-install the program in administrator mode. Locate the program icon, right-click and select as “Run as administrator”.

  • WD MYBOOK LIVE - Unable to access "Public" share by browsing from Windows Explorer: A solution

My Problem: While trying to browse my Public share over the local network with windows explorer (the standard file browser) I was presented with a dialog box asking for a user name and password. None of the configured username and password combinations worked. My Solution: I found a tutorial at the following link, http://community.wd.com/t5/My-Book-Live/GUIDE-Fix-Dashboard-Errors-3xxxx/m-p/513954 which instructed on how to perform a factory restore without losing data. I was reluctant to try this because I was still afraid of being at risk of losing my data. Looking around, I found a script called setSharePublic.sh which allowed me to reset the status of my 'Public' share to public. I ran the script and it worked without a loss of data. I can now browse to my public share over the network with Windows Explorer. I followed the referenced tutorial all the way through step 4. The new step 5 is as follows: 5) Now at the MyBookLive:~# prompt you are going to type
/usr/local/sbin/setSharePublic.sh Public And I abondoned all further steps. I was able to browse on in without waiting or rebooting. It might be useful to note, though I am not sure if it is of any consequence, that my computer is on workgroup HOME and my WD MY BOOK LIVE is on the same workgroup.

Hello and welcome to the WD community.
Thanks for sharing this with the community hopefully this helps other users with similar problems solve it as well.

  • Adobe Bridge overrides Windows Explorer functions?

Since installing Adobe Bridge CS3, I am unable to rename/copy/move folders within Windows explorer...If I want to do it, I have to use Bridge.
This is particularly annoying when new folders have to be renamed/copied/moved within OTHER programs. Example: I am processing a photo or piece of video in Nero or Quicktime and create a new folder to place the processed images/videos. I can not name that folder while within Nero or Quicktime nor can I rename it if I exit the program and use Windows Explorer. I HAVE to open BRIDGE and do it there....
    Help?

Perhaps it is something with NEro or Quicktime. Make sure they are both the latest version. There has been some conflicts with Quicktime and Bridge in previous QT updates.
I have Vista and have no problems with have not experienced any problems like you describe with Windows Explorer. I usually use WS rather than Bridge for deleting, copying, moving. I have experienced some problems with external drives and permissioning problems when using Bridge, but starting Bridge in administrative mode solved that. Right click on Bridge icon and choose "Run as Administrator".

  • Windows 7 Open and Save As dialog box gives an "Access Denied" when using common Windows Explorer features.

On many computers in our environment we have issues in Windows 7 when using the Common Dialog Box.  Within the dialog box we get the error Access Denied whenever we try to create a folder.  If we try to rename a file it doesn't give an error but
it doesn't work either.  We cannot delete a file, still no error, but we can create shortcut.
Within Windows Explorer of the same user it has no issues.
Even if we run an application as administrator it has the same results.
Example: Open Paint (right click "Run As Administrator"); then File, "Save As", right-click in empty space; then New, Folder.  This caused the error to popup "Unable to create the folder 'New folder'  Access is denied."
    Thanks for your help,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
How are things going? As the article provided above said, for such kind of issues generally it is caused by permission settings.
The article provided several possible solution and please let us know if there is anything unclear about the steps.

  • RoboHelp is unable to start RoboHelp Explorer

I recently installed RoboHelp 9 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit computer. I worked in it for a day, editing a previously existing robohelp file that was created in version 6. Yesterday when I tried to open RoboHelp, it wouldn't open. The RoboHelp splash page quickly flashes on and off but does not open. I went to the .doc file for the project and tried to open that, but Word gives me an error that "RoboHelp is unable to start RoboHelp Explorer". It does open the word doc, but no RoboHelp Explorer. I've rebooted my machine, no luck.
Any ideas? I had this same issue with Adobe Captivate when I tried to load an old version on this machine... the answer seemed to be that it wasn't compatible with 64-bit... I installed the trial version of Captivate and have been running that for two weeks with no issues so far. But my understanding was that RoboHelp 9 was fine with 64-bit...
    Thanks!

    Hello again
You should probably consider filing a bug report. That way it will be on Adobe's radar. And you never know, sometimes the development team shoots back a message advising what to do or asking for further information. Doesn't happen always, but once in a while it does.

  • While browsing Firefox, display another htm*file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer and not getting the erro message "Firefox is already running (etc) "

While browsing the Web with Firefox, I often want to view an htm (or html etc) file that is recorded on my computer, by double-clicking it in my Windows Explorer, hoping it will open automatically a new tab.
When I try this now, I get the error message "Firefox is already running (etc)" .
In my current setup, Firefox is associated with the htm and html file name extensions.
If, instead of double-clicking the filename in the Explorer, I choose the Firefox menu item "Open a file", this works OK.
In old versions of Firefox, double-clicking a filename in the Windows Explorer or File Manager caused Firefox to open a new window every time which was ok.
I have the same problem with Thunderbird, which I have associated with the "eml" file name extension. How can I view a series of recorded ".eml" files with Thunderbird when Thunderbird is already running ? Thank you.

The target field of the desktop shortcut is "D:\C_Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" (no switch)
The system/environment variable MOZ_nO_REMOTE is now 0, changed from 1, but I can see no difference. Maybe I need to restart the system to get a change ?
    Thank you.

  • Windows Explorer misreads large-file .zip archives

I just spent about 90 minutes trying to report this problem through
the normal support channels with no useful result, so, in desperation,
I'm trying here, in the hope that someone can direct this report to some
    useful place.
There appears to be a bug in the .zip archive reader used by Windows
Explorer in Windows 7 (and up, most likely).
An Info-ZIP Zip user recently reported a problem with an archive
created using our Zip program.  The archive was valid, but it contained
a file which was larger than 4GiB.  The complaint was that Windows
Explorer displayed (and, apparently believed) an absurdly large size
value for this large-file archive member.  We have since reproduced the
    problem.
The original .zip archive format includes uncompressed and compressed
sizes for archive members (files), and these sizes were stored in 32-bit
fields.  This caused problems for files which are larger than 4GiB (or,
on some system types, where signed size values were used, 2GiB).  The
solution to this fundamental limitation was to extend the .zip archive
format to allow storage of 64-bit member sizes, when necessary.  (PKWARE
identifies this format extension as "Zip64".)
The .zip archive format includes a mechanism, the "Extra Field", for
storing various kinds of metadata which had no place in the normal
archive file headers.  Examples include OS-specific file-attribute data,
such as Finder info and extended attributes for Apple Macintosh; record
format, record size, and record type data for VMS/OpenVMS; universal
file times and/or UID/GID for UNIX(-like) systems; and so on.  The Extra
Field is where the 64-bit member sizes are stored, when the fixed 32-bit
    size fields are too small.
An Extra Field has a structure which allows multiple types of extra
data to be included.  It comprises one or more "Extra Blocks", each of
    which has the following structure:
           Size (bytes) | Description
          --------------+------------
                2       | Type code
2       | Number of data bytes to follow
            (variable)  | Extra block data
The problem with the .zip archive reader used by Windows Explorer is
that it appears to expect the Extra Block which includes the 64-bit
member sizes (type code = 0x0001) to be the first (or only) Extra Block
in the Extra Field.  If some other Extra Block appears at the start of
the Extra Field, then its (non-size) data are being incorrectly
interpreted as the 64-bit sizes, while the actual 64-bit size data,
further along in the Extra Field, are ignored.
Perhaps the .zip archive _writer_ used by Windows Explorer always
places the Extra Block with the 64-bit sizes in this special location,
but the .zip specification does not demand any particular order or
placement of Extra Blocks in the Extra Field, and other programs
(Info-ZIP Zip, for example) should not be expected to abide by this
artificial restriction.  For details, see section "4.5 Extensible data
    fields" in the PKWARE APPNOTE:
          http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT
A .zip archive reader is expected to consider the Extra Block type
codes, and interpret accordingly the data which follow.  In particular,
it's not sufficient to trust that any particular Extra Block will be the
first one in the Extra Field.  It's generally safe to ignore any Extra
Block whose type code is not recognized, but it's crucial to scan the
Extra Field, identify each Extra Block, and handle it according to its
    type.
Here are some relatively small (about 14MiB each) test archives which
    illustrate the problem:
          http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/ms_zip64/test_4g.zip
          http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/ms_zip64/test_4g_V.zip

    time (type = 0x5455) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).  test_4g_V.zip
    has: PWWARE VMS (type = 0x000c) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).
test_4g_W.zip has: NT security descriptor (type = 0x4453), universal
    time (type = 0x5455), and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).  Obviously,
Info-ZIP UnZip has no trouble correctly finding the 64-bit size info in
these archives, but Windows Explorer is clearly confused.  (Note that
"1,464,940,363,777 KB" translates to 0x0005545500000400 (bytes), and
"0x00055455" looks exactly like the size, "0x0005" and the type code
"0x5455" for a "UT" universal time Extra Block, which was present in
that archive.  This is consistent with the hypothesis that the wrong
data in the Extra Field are being interpreted as the 64-bit size data.)
Without being able to see the source code involved here, it's hard to
know exactly what it's doing wrong, but it does appear that the .zip
reader used by Windows Explorer is using a very (too) simple-minded
method to extract 64-bit size data from the Extra Field, causing it to
get bad data from a properly formed archive.
I suspect that the engineer involved will have little trouble finding
and fixing the code which parses an Extra Field to extract the 64-bit
sizes correctly, but if anyone has any questions, we'd be happy to help.

I don't know why you would need to, but yes, you can:
          http://www.info-zip.org/
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/src/
You can also get pre-built executables for Windows:
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/win32/unz600xn.exe
          ftp://ftp.info-zip.org/pub/infozip/win32/zip300xn.zip

You seem to misunderstand the situation.  The facts are these:
       1.  For your convenience, I've provided three test archives, each of
which includes a file larger than 4GiB.  These archives are valid.
       2.  Info-ZIP UnZip (version 6.00 or newer) can process these archives
correctly.  This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
    valid.
       3.  Programs from other vendors can process these archives correctly.
I've supplied a screenshot showing one of them (7-Zip) doing so, as you
requested.  This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
    valid.
       4.  Windows Explorer (on Windows 7) cannot process these archives
correctly, apparently because it misreads the (Zip64) file size data.
I've supplied a screenshot of Windows Explorer showing the bad file size
it gets, and the failure that occurs when one tries to use it to extract
the file from one of these archives, as you requested.  This is
consistent with the fact that there's a bug in the .zip reader used by
    Windows Explorer.
Yes, "other zip application runs correctly."  Info-ZIP UnZip runs
correctly.  Only Windows Explorer does _not_ run correctly.

  • CD ROM/Blu-Ray player now missing in Windows Explorer for HP HDX18

I currently have a: HP HDX X18T-1100 CTO Premium Notebook PC, product number: FJ927AV
All of a sudden, I can no longer see the  CD player in windows explorer. If I put a CD in nothing plays, no blu-ray, no DVD, no music CD. If I look at the device in device manager it says there is a problem with the driver. I tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting, but the same thing happens. I also tried numerous Microsoft troubleshooting tips to edit the registry entry and such but the registry entries it says to look for to delete do not exist. I can't find any drivers for my CD ROM on-line to try and re-download.
I had to uninstall Itunes the other day and re-install it. I see this effects Sony laptops with the exact same CD-ROM drive (optiarc BD-5500s) but I can't find a fix for my HP laptop. I am currently running Windows 8.1.

    Hi  Williamr2042,
    Welcome to the HP forum!
When I checked the driver page for your computer, HP only list drivers up  to  Windows 7. Unfortunately when researching, I was unable to locate any drivers for the BD Rom BC-5500S ATA Device and Windows 8.1.
