when I bought my new iPhone I went to put my old iPhone back to factory settings delete all my personal stuff so I could give it to a friend however it went into a blank screen with the apple logo on it I have tried many times using iTunes to recover however keep getting the 1015 error

That's because it was jailbroken. You can't get help here or from Apple for a jailbroken phone.

Unable to recover iphone

I have purchased a iPhone 4 from a well known auction site and it has been working reasonably well but every so often it would pop up a window stating there was no service and it would have to be restored. I have tried a few permutations that have been suggested on the net, i.e. put it into airplane mode and then switch back and then switch off and on. This worked a month ago but last week it went again, I have tried airplane mode but this time it has not come back. I have tried disconnecting the battery on a number of occassions but again no joy. During the restore, the screen would show the white timeline bar under the apple logo and when the white line reaches the other side of the logo it would fail with:
Can anyone please advise how I can break this cycle of not being able to restore the iPhone?
Sometimes the white timeline bar nearly reaches the end but another error message would pop up with an error code 16. I have tried numerous cables, updated all the software, restarted services. You name it I have probably done it.

I have been trying for hours to restore Iphone 3GS in XP. All i did was click "yes" to update iphone and now I am in a mess. Tried reinstalling, different ports, different cables, still unable to restore.

I'm not sure, or else more people would be posting about it. Best way to tell is try at a different time.
Also, you could try putting the phone in Forced Recovery mode as outlined in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
Also, are you using iPhone cables or iPod cables? If you're using the appropriate cable and the same thing happens, then hopefully your phone is still within warranty and you can go to an Apple Store for the Genius Bar.

I recently purchased an iPhone a week ago and have just tried to update the software (to 1.1.2). I get as far as "restoring iPhone software..." and that's it. The updating status bar will get to a point, and just stay there. No matter how long the iPhone is connected, the progression bar stays where it is. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Here is my advice, DONOT update the phone if you can at all avoid. I received a similar message and the update put my IPhone back to factory setting and I lost ALL data and will now have to readd everything... There is a post that states there is an issue. I don't know if it is happening with the MACs, but there is something wrong in my opinion with the upgrade when using the PC

This is how I managed to fix the problem...and I hope this helps others in the similar situation.
I tried with another program..latest version of Nero, and this was also stopping at the 'initialising' stage. I was now lost! I thought the last resort is to give Evesham (My PC manufacturer) a buzz. They were very helpfull. Basically go into 'Control Panel', 'System', and click on the Hardware tab, then 'Device Manager'. Uninstall everything in the DVD/CDRom Drives. Then uninstall everything under the catagory IDE ATA/Atapi disk controllers. This is where my problem was, as I only had one IDE channel here. You should have 4 or 5! Reboot your machine, and everything will automatically re-load. I tried burning using Nero and it worked. Then the big test was iTunes. It worked 1st time!
I asked why the IDE channels have dissappearred, and he said sometimes uninstalling Programmes occasionally removes them.
I hope this will help others who are having problems to burn stuff on iTunes. I can give more info if you need it.

In other words:
The backup to which you're trying to restore was created with a lower or previos version of iOS than the one installed on your iPhone during the recovery. If this is the case then you'll be unable to restore your phone with that backup and you'll have to set your iPhone up as new. Or,
Your iPhone was/is jailbroken. If this is the case, there is nothing anyone here or at Apple can do for you.

This is indicates a hardwre issue:
Check for hardware issues
Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.

Is your iPhone jailbroken?. Are you trying to downgrade the iOS?. In the article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 this is what it says about error 1015:
Errors related to downgrading iOS
The required resource cannot be found: This alert message occurs when your device has a newer version of iOS than what is available in iTunes. When troubleshooting a device that presents this alert message, go to Settings > General > About and check the version of iOS on the device. If it is newer than the latest released iOS version, the device may have a prerelease developer version of iOS installed. Installing an older version of iOS over a newer version is not supported.

Yes. You can't update or restore any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. If you want to update, you need to get a sim card.
