Unable to reformat G4, or to reinstall OS X.3o

My daughter gave me her PowerBook G4 to fix. It quit totally last November, would not even turn on. A few days ago it did finally turn on, but repeatedly said "You need to reboot your computer." Eventually it turned off so she was able to retrieve some information. It will restart ok a few times, then go through 3-4 rounds of the "Need to reboot" messages. She says it had been doing that "forever".
While not certain if the issue is software or hardware, a reformat seems a good idea. So I put in the Panther upgrade cd (this thing was shipped with X.2 although X.3 had recently come out -- the disk was a free upgrade). It keeps telling me that it cannot reformat the drive as a newer version of OS X is on there. It is OS X.3.9. Is this due to firmware upgrades, a bad hard drive, or something I don't know about?

If you have an Upgrade disc then you cannot reformat the drive to install it. An Upgrade disc requires that you have the previous OS X version already installed. You would need to use the original installer disc first to install 10.2.x using Erase and Install. To do that simply boot from the installer disc and follow instructions until you get to the point where you select a destination drive. Click on the Options button and select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button. Continue with the installation. After you get 10.2.x installed you can then boot from the 10.3 Upgrade disc in order to upgrade to 10.3.x.

I run a Macbook on OS X Lion which I installed via the app store. How can I reformat my Macbook and reinstall OS X Lion without the disc? Secondly, How can I then upload my TimeMachine backup so it was the same as before?
Will this repair all disc permissions and ensure maximum performance from my computer?

You must create your Lion install disk, before.  Read here how you can:

I have just reformatted my drive and reinstalled creative cloud and lightroom. When i open it, it says there is another version running the catalog and i have to switch to it to fix the problem, but there is no other version on my computer. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Where did you put the LR catalog?
Did you install the same version of LR, which one?
    OS and version?
Open the folder where the catalog (*.lrcat) is located. If you see a file with lock in it while LR is not running, delete it.
Now try to start LR again.

  • Unable to reformat my boot partition when booted into recovery

I need to reformat my Mac OS X partition for a clean install and when I boot into the recovery partition to do so I am unable to erase the partition.  Some times in disk utility it shows as greyed out (unmounted) and will not allow me to mount.  Then other times it will show mounted and I will be unable to unmount and erase.  Any body dealt with this before.  Help is much appreciated.

    Hi,
So I tried to reformat with the SL disk in and I was given the error.  This operation requires an umounted disk.  Now the Disk is mounted but the Mac OS X partition that I want to erase is mounted I think.  Is the way around that to unmount the entire disk and then try erase the partiton?  I have a Bootcamp partition with a lot of university work and programming programs etc so I would really like to avoid an entire disk reformat.
    Thanks again,

  • Reformat iBook G3 and reinstall OS 10.3.7

I am new to Macs. I need to backup iTunes 4.7.1 songs, reformat the hard drive and reinstall OS 10.3.7 on it. I found out how to backup the songs. Now my question is, how do I wipe the hard drive, format it and reinstall the OS 10.3.7?
Is the reinstall procedure easy or do I need to set any permissions, etc?
Does the install CD contain the necessary drivers?
    PLease help!
    Thanks!

Hi, Sundari. Welcome to iBook Discussions.
May I ask why you need to reformat the drive? This will completely erase the drive and take off all the applications you now have on your iBook (like AppleWorks and OS 9 for Classic). What version of install CD's do you have? Are they 10.3.7 or something lower? Do you have the Restore CD's that originally came with the iBook? They will be necessary if you want to recover applications that came on the iBook. The answers to these questions will help determine how difficult the procedure will be.
If you don't specifically need to reformat, perhaps an Archive and Install would work for you? It won't cause you to lose all your applications and data. It's still a good idea to back up your iTunes music and other files you need and want to keep, but if all goes well with an Archive and Install, your music will remain on your drive and all you will need to do is upgrade to iTunes 6 instead of reinstalling everything.
    Good luck.

  • Unable to open RAW files after reinstalling Photoshop CS4

I recently did a system recovery to my computer due to downgrading to Windows 7; however, after I installed Design Premium back to my PC, I am not able to open RAW files in Photoshop. It prompted "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I tried to check for Photoshop updates but no updates are available. I tried re-installing Design Premium but the issue still persists.
My system configuration is as follows:
Windows 7 Professional x64 (Yet to install Service Pack 1, but I don't think that really matters)
Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium (Photoshop Version 11.0)
Canon EOS 50D (Firmware Version 1.08)
Anyone may have a clue on how to fix that? Thanks a lot!
    Screenshot as follows:

When you reinstalled CS4, you  went back to the original release.
Now you must apply all the updates to Photoshop and to  Adobe Camera Raw manually.
You cannot rely on the Adobe auto updater to tell you that you are up to date.  That updater was broken for years and years, and that was and is certainly the case with CS4.
Adobe didn't get their updater act together until CS6.
You also have to update the ACR plug-in manually.

  • I was unable to access migrate assistant to reinstall my hard drive. I didn't know if it would work but I used the time machine restore button that opens up in the space movie. The computer said it would download it to "Volumes". Now I can't find it.

I was unable to access migrate assistant to restore my hard drive. Out of desperation and ignorance I opened up Time Machines space page and selected my most recent backup and pushed restore. The system accepted it and said it would intall in in "volumes". I was unable to figure out what that meant but I went a head a tried it. The download took four hours and then puff it was gone and so was my data. I can't find the back up anywhere. The only thing I think it might be is that I had named the hard drive a different name than the original (don't ask me why). Have any ideas?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

Uninstalling & Re-installing iTunes will not delete your iTunes Library Data.
    Do the following:
Uninstall from Windows the following four programs: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support. You do this from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple and note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator, just Right click iTunes installer and Run as Administrator.

  • B-tree error, cannot mount Lion partition, but can mount bootcamp partition. Unable to reformat because it won't mount. How do I reformat?

    Hi everyone:
So earlier today I was taking a screen shot with (command+shift+4) and right when I took it, the spinning wheelcame up on the screen. It was there for a long time, so I decided to turn off my macbook by holding down thepower button. When I turned it on, it stayed at the grey apple logo with the loading circle underneath.
I turned it off again, and this time I started it into the Recovery HD. I ran a disk verify and it said my disk was corrupt and needed to be repaired. I tried to repair it and it said it could not be repaired. Next, I tried to erase the hard drive and it still didn't work because it cannot mount the hard drive.
The thing that baffles me is that I have 2 partitions on my hard drive, one for mac, the other for windows bootcamp and the windows hard drive is able to be mounted. I tried to completely delete the entire hard drive, but it won't let me. What are the next steps I should take into solving this problem? Any/All help is appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like the drive may be faulty or have suffered a problem. Bummer mate, but it happens.
Disk Utility won't let you do a complete erase? Probably not what you want to do anyway as you'd lose your bootcamp partition.
I would recommend you replace the drive and re-install OS X. Once they get faulty like this you're into a greatly increased risk window. You'll need to have a bootable DVD / USB stick of Lion or a RecoveryHD USB created by the Lion Recovery Assistant.
If the MBP is under warranty or you have Applecare you could get the drive replaced under warranty.
To retrieve your files and Apps etc you can restore from a backup, or if you don't have one then you could get a sata enclosure for the old drive and attach it as an external drive then attempt to copy the content from it once you've re-installed. Time Machine backups will make this much easier for you though.
For bootcamp, you're going to need a 3rd party program such as Winclone (www.twocanoes.com) to allow you to take an image of the bootcamp partition and restore it to the new bootcamp partition on the new drive.
I can heartily recommend the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB hybrid drive (ST750LX003) if you're going for a replacement. You won't believe the difference in performance it provides.
    Good luck!

  • Undeletable partition!

    Hi Everyone,
I have one problem: Long story short, I had a bootcamp partition, without problems. I then deleted (Well you learn by your mistakes..) my keychains AND files related to it trying to fix an Isight constant freeze problem...
My Mac could not connect to the Internet so I decided to reinstall everything.
I launched with the DVD and "C" reinstalled everything. the former partition was still there.
OTHER MISTAKE i did the same thing to the partition ( reinstalling the full OS). after the that the Mac was just displaying the blue screen so i Reinstalled the Os on the big drive and use the disk utilities on the partition but it was still on my desktop.
Last mistake i went in disk utilities, unmount the drive (It disapeared from the desktop at least) and then right click on it and choose delete, but it refused.
Now the disk is greyish and i cannot either checck permissions, verify or repair...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!
