Unable to relink clips

As I have reported in https://discussions.apple.com/message/25324655#25324655, in one of my libraries I am unable to relink a number of clips and I am unable to copy those clips into another library. I believe that whatever is causing the inability to relink the clips or copy them to another library is also the cause of all the beachballing in the problematic library.
When I attempt to relink the clips I get through the verification stage but when I click the relink button the beachballing starts.
How can I relink clips that refuse to relink?

See https://discussions.apple.com/message/25352565?ac_cid=tw123456#25352565 for how I solved my problems.

dragging the clip in the timeline still works... is there a hidden setting to enable this functions again or is it a bug?

  • How to break compound clip unable to relink?

I edited a video one computer. I transferred over to another computer. I relinked all of the video files using 'File' - 'Relink Project Files'. Once all of the files where relinked unfortuntley the compound clips did not relink. When I selected the compound clip where the video files are missing. I cannot break the compound clip to relink the files. 'Open in Timeline', 'double clicking on compound clip' and 'Break Apart Clip Files' does not work. It simply does not give me the option. This is unfortunate because I have to essential redue these edits on the computer I transferred my project on. There is no way around it?? This seems like a Final Cut Pro X glitch/problem. Does any one have any solution to this problem? I research this problem and found no solution! help anyone?

    Hi Tom,
Problem is when I right click on the compoud clip, there was no longer an option to break clips apart !
Where does Apple locate the function to break clips apart now in 10.0.6 ?
    Thanks

  • How do I relink clips from a AAF import to original camera media?

Our current workflow is to import our camera master QTs into Media Composer.  And to then import our production audio WAV files.  These Master Clips, both video and audio, are left as is and not renamed.  We then Autosync them into subclips.  The synced subclips are renamed to the slate name.  We then offline edit.  Then we export a video only AAF that we import into FCP7 with Automatic Duck.  This make a Sequence and Clips.  The clips we can easily do a relink with search and it find the original MOV files and all our clips are back online.
With FCP7 being DOA we are exploring how we are going to eventually replace it in our workflow and I'm giving Premier Pro a try since we already have the Production bundle for other software in the package.
When I import the AAF into PP it makes a sequence and 3 clips in the project window for each clip in the in the sequence.  One of the clips appears to refer only to audio so it's confusing as to why it exist since I have a video only AAF.
Then there are a set of clips that appear to match the Master Clips from the Avid in that they have the original MOV file name as their name and the TC on them matches too.  But when I select them to relink them the window that comes up is looking for the Avid MXF media.  So I have to relink each one at a time.  And once I have them online they are of no use as they don't have anything to do with clips cut into the sequence.
Then there is another set of clips.  These have the slate names on them like the Subclips in Media Composer.  And if I load up the sequence and ask it to find a clip in the project it is these clips that get revealed.  And the durations on them are what is needed for the sequence, but not the entire length of the original subclips in Media Composer.  Now for the weird part, the clips have frame rates of 95.90fps and the TC on them is hours off from what it should be.  And when I go to relink them it is asking for MXF files that all begin with BLACK02 for whatever reason.  So with a lot of pain of using the Media Composer to cross reference each clip I hand relink them.  But none of these clips reference the correct part of the MOV file.  All of the clips line up with the first frame of the MOV.  Even subclips from the same master clip all start at the first frame of the MOV file.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but whatever it is, it's very wrong.  I was hoping to find some direction on how to properly go from Media Composer to Premiere Pro with AAF files.
    Thank you,
    Jay

Are all your media files in the same place, or do you keep them in different places on your hard-drive.
For group batching, I've simply gone to the Preferences and set my iTunes library location to the folder where all my media files live. It will crank through the folder and add anything that is not added yet.
The other thing to do is to clear out your iTunes off all media, then drag-and-drop the 300 files into it to relink the lot.

  • Unable to relink to identical file in different location

I have a library I created over a year ago. The library is stored on an external hd and the media is stored on the external as well, although it's referenced via sym links (not stored in the library itself). I also have all the media backed up on a server.
What I'd like to do is relink all of the media from the external drive to the files on our server. What I did, was copy the library from the external HD to the computer, eject the external drive so it can't link to any of the media. Then open the copied library (on mac) in Final Cut Pro X and go in to relink files. Here is where the issue comes into play:
I can relink all the files except 2100 clips from a Canon 5D Mark III. Even if I grab the exact same file that was on the external HD and copy it to the server, it will no longer relink. After digging around and adding a clip from the server to the library, I've found out that there is now timecode on the exact same clip. It's almost like when I originally added the video clip a year and a half ago, FCPX didn't recognize SMPTE and so the timecode started at 00:00:00. Now it does and it thinks the clips are completely different. I'm in search for another workaround, but at the moment, the only way I know of is to open a clip in Quicktime 7 and manually go in and delete the timecode, save the file and then it will link. With 2100 clips, this becomes problematic.
I'm using the latest version of Yosemite and FCPX
Any suggestions on the best way to solve it?

Yes, ASO has the concept of 'tablespaces'. There are four (default, temp, log and metadata) but you probably just want to move the 'default' and 'temp' tablespaces to your SAN location. Temp will look really small (i.e. empty) until you run a restructure or aggregation and then it'll explode to the size of the default tablespace so it's important not to miss.
See the section on 'Managing Storage for ASO Databases' here http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_dbag/asysadmn.html, or the 'alter tablespace' MaxL command here http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_tech_ref/maxl_alttabl.html.
EDIT: Actually, looking at the documentation, I see that you can't move the metadata or log tablespaces. But you're probably only going to care about 'default' and 'temp' anyway.

  • How to relink clips THROUGH the new Project Library??

I updated everything to FCPX 10.1.1.
Some clips became unlinked.  I go to link them ... and am stopped dead by the NEW Library Icon (with all it's internal folders no longer seemingly accessible).  I know the file is in there - if I do a search in Finder for the missing media, it takes me right to where it is.
When I do a relink, stopped dead in my tracks by the new format.
How do I access the folders hidden in the new Project Library to relink my clips with their original media?

    Ben Low wrote:
... when I go to 'locate' or 'search' for the missing file FCPX gets stuck at the door to the Project Library ...
you miss the concept of Libs:
Libraries are no 'real world' folders, just a 'register' where is what .. in best-of-all-worlds, all data (audio, video, stills, projects ...) are on the same drive - but the concept of Libs allows data spread all across your network But handled as 'one', e.g to finally-save Projects, outsource old data etc ...
A Lib acts like a (super-)folder, but isn't. Simple example: a 10GB lib could fit on a 2GB drive! .. if data is spread on some other drives. But Finder says 'here', due to use of hard- or sym-links. ....
... I read in my searches that one doesn't have to have one's media stored in the Library, but I haven't found a protocol yet for saving media elsewhere.
It's always in some LIb, but not physically... s.above ...
..  One thing I can't figure out:  Folders.  I love folders.  I use them all the time to organize.
    obsolete,
get familiar with the concept of tags/keywords/smartlists.
    example:
a clip is tagged x-mas, grandma, 2002, funny scene .. one clip, one storage location, many ways to find it.
now, your old drawer/folder system: the scene with grandma wearing a funny hat ... do I have to dig in folder 'videos2002' or 'videos2003'? sub-folder xmas or birthday? or is it n my 'out-takes drive'.. but under what name? your one clip can only be in one drawer... but should be found under several keywords... sooo?
    Folders = old school
    tags = much more convenient.
(plus: you can use tags very similiar as your old folders... but a computer is much faster in dig'n-search than you, manually
    concerning re-linking:
I once had the effect, a 'lost' drive had to be re-mounted:
the red-icon-of-terror (cam missing), relink doesn't came up with a suggestion; clicked on import from camera, clicked to my cam-archive on some drive - and WHILE doing so FCPX instantly found the old connection (no re-import nor re-linking neccessary)..
That drive was unintended un-plugged while using FCPX ..... never happened again.

  • How to relink clips when FCPX thinks they do not match

FCPX - I have been trying for hours to relink my clips:  they are the same yet FCPX says this every time: "The original file didn't have audio, but the new file does."  I need to find a way to force relink the clips.  my project is too big to start doing this manually.  and you got it - this was due yesturday. If anyone has found a way to fooling FCPX to mach clips please let me know.  I have already tried to reimport the clips - no luck.  really desperate. hopefully someone knows how to relink when FCPX thinks it can't.
    Thanks
    MO

You would need to provide clips that match in terms of audio channels- if FCPX expects an original clip that had no audio channels that what you need to supply in order to relink. With QuickTime Player 7 it's very easy to resave clips without an audio channel:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
This can also be done with MPEG Streamclip or Compressor.

  • Unable to drag clips on timeline

I have seen many forums about not being able to drag clips from source down to the timeline. but my issue is not being able to drag clips once already into timeline
I had a project started and was able to move clips around regularly, so its not a lack of knowledge, but once the updated 2014 version of premiere pro came out I have not been able to move my clips. I will click and it gives me the red cut symbol,
I thought maybe because it wasn't rendered all my effects, but its the same issue on unaffected clips as well.... What am I missing?! I have track matte effects on some clips.
Maybe a stupid question... are we supposed to delete the old version of premier pro? new to the suite life. Didn't think that would matter that much. advice
Any advice would be great... or even if have the same problem, so I could go to the adobe tech support to report it

Yes, it is now and still has an issue. I realized I wasn't able to drag other media into the timeline as well as the other forums, I have since added a "sequence" like those have suggested but still the same issue occurs, unable to move anything around. its so weird it will act like its trying to move, or understand its supposed to but it just doesn't read that im dragging it. im on a PC. specifically an Asus

  • Unable to move Clip in timeline

When attempting to move a clip in the timeline, I get a "cannot move" icon (circle with a slash) and a white rectangle icon. And I am unable to move that clip or any other clip in the timeline. I have had this occur several times and I am generally able to exit and reenter and then I can move the clip. But now I am receiving the response even after exiting and restarting and even rebooting.
    Any ideas?
This is using Premier Elements 7.0.
    Thanks!

Sounds like your project has gotten too big and computer resources have been consumed, making everything you do slow, non-responsive. You will need to break your project up into smaller chunks and work on each chunk in a separate project. Then export each project to a DV-AVI file. Reconstruct the whole movie with just the DV-AVI files in a new project.
If you have photos in your project, resize them to be no more than 1000 x 750 in a photo editing application before adding them to Premiere Elements. The photos that come from megapixel digital cameras are just too big for Premiere Elements.

  • Unable to 'share' clips from iMovie 11 plse help

    hi everyone.
ive got a black macbook intel core 2 duo.
i tried putting final cut pro x on there but it doesnt like it as the graphics card isnt compatible-after doing a google search...anyway- i have imovie 11.
im unable to 'share' my footage once i am happy with it...any thoughts?
ive nothing on this computer- no programs no files. i purchased it a few days ago...so far peeved with LION...so had to call apple to purchase original install discs it would have shipped with for snow leopard.
if anyone knows why im unable to 'share' id be so grateful for your help.
    CarolineUK

And You have space - on the Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk - to Share to ?
You need a minimum of 25Gb free space just to let iMovie, iDVD and Mac OS to run OK and to this space for the Shared Project and if HD this can need lot's (50Gb extra is not unusual)
If You use Finalize function - this too grabs lot's of hard disk space
If You use external hard disk/s - Then they MUST be Mac OS Extended formatted (hfs) - else iMovie can not use them for video !

  • Unable to adjust clip length by dragging

Please help me.. I am no longer able to drag the still photo clips in iMovie 5.0.2 to length, they just move up and down the time line. I have been able to adjust them willy-nilly in the recent past but no longer. Did i wear it out? What's the simple solution?

Hi Tedious Tom - just to add a little to Bengt's post - do not have 'Show Clip Volume Levels' activated either. Also, of course, you cannot lengthen the image beyond its originally-set duration by using this direct trimming method.

  • Unable to link clips due to generic import error.

I am using Premiere Pro CC, up to date, on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  After week's vacation opened large project to find all clips offline.  When I linked, they located fine but OK produce "the importer reported a generic error".  I know the clips are on their hard drives and have not changed position.  I am not sure of next step.  I have always been able to link before though have not used "locate" dialogue box.  Checking other projects reveals consistent problem with importer.

a couple of things to try would be deleting the Cache files and resetting the Preferences.
