Unable to restart and other oddness.

I'm currently on my 3rd install of Leopard on this laptop hoping that something would change but It hasn't.
Once I'm logged in on my account I'm fine until I try and restart or shutdown. I'll look like I'm going to do either but it goes to the time machine background only with the spinner going, but it just stays there forever. I'm forced to do a hard reset. I've found that if I log out and then tell it to shutdown I'm fine. A bit annoying but as long as I remember I don't have to hold the power button down.
Does anyone know why this may be happening ?
currently I have growlhelperapp , quicksilver, airport disk agent, and synergyd running on login. hopefully that helps.
2nd odd thing is I've had crashes from the wireless driver at least once per install so far that has required me holding the power down and I've sent a bug report to apple.
3rd odd thing has only happened once but I'm posting it in case It happens again. Terminal.app said 'PAM Error (line 396): System error' whenever I or any other user on the system tried to use it. A reboot fixed that.
I'm kind of wondering if being 5th in line at the KOP Apple store was such a good idea. Performance of bf2142 tonight will be the determining factor.

I think I figured out the restart problem finally. I noticed that .mac sync was swirling on restart attempt. So I undid my mac account and trashed the file it left on my desktop. It restarted properly twice. I then reenabled .mac sync and tried it again after It created the iDisk and was fully synced. I was able to reboot properly twice after that. I'll post here again if I encounter this issue again or figure out anything on the other 2 issues.

I have a MacBook Pro running mavericks. Sometimes the screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus, software issue, water damage, etc? An error message usually appears after being restarted. It does it all the time please help.

No Virus. You have a Hardware Problem. 3 Beeps means a RAM problem. You could try Reseating the RAM is its sockets.
But that wouldn't necessarily cause the screen to Glitch Out, as you say.

  • Can't log off/restart, and other related issues.

I wrote the following with a lot of detail, intending to give it straight to Apple... but I don't think they have an option for that. Let me know if I'm wrong. Also, excuse my numbering scheme - it was trimming out my spaces and I wanted to preserve the layout somehow. =[
This all starts with my MacBook having been on for is that, when I open my MacBook and it comes back from sleep, I see the usual black screen. It brings up the unlock dialog, but that disappears almost instantly. Neither moving the cursor nor pressing keys brings it back. However, sleeping the laptop again and then reopening it shows the dialog normally. However, after then, I've noticed the following other symptoms after that point (until restart):
    1) Gmail Notifier (in the menu bar) stops updating, even when "Check now" is clicked manually. Restarting the program doesn't fix this.
    2) Screensaver doesn't come on automatically or with hot corner, only when "test" is pressed in the screensaver preference.
    3) Not closing applications before logging out or shutting down produces an error (after a delay of a couple minutes) about the OS not being able to close the applications. However, they all appear to be closed (no white dot, right clicking on them doesn't show "Not Responding"). At that point, opening the programs and closing them manually seems to prevent the error message for that program. Then, ... (see next item)
    4) Even if all applications are closed manually beforehand, it doesn't shut down or log off. A few observations:
    a) Everything but the dock goes disappears.
    b) Dashboard/expose/desktop hot keys and keyboard shortcuts still work.
    c) Clicking a dock item brings the menu bar back, but doesn't reactivate Finder (or show the desktop icons, consequently).

I'm having this exact same problem, except I don't use GMail Notifier. The being unable to log out, shut down, or restart issue I've had intermittently in the past; the broken screensaver is new.

  • 404 and other odd results from 11.2 docs in tahiti

Just an observation, searching on things like pga at tahiti.oracle.com then clicking on 11.2 results gives 404 errors. Clicking on the 11.2 docs then searching gives not found errors. No problems with other versions. I optimistically take this as a sign that someone is updating the doc set. But it would seem odd to update at 11:00AM on a workday.

I would like to test downgrade process through the scripts (@catdwgrd.sql). Oracle documentation http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18283_01/server.112/e17222/downgrade.htm
    says
"2.If you previously installed a recent version of the time zone file and used the DBMS_DST PL/SQL package to upgrade TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE data to that version, then you must install the same version of the time zone file in the release to which you are downgrading. For example, the latest time zone files that are supplied with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) are version 14 as of this printing. If after the database upgrade, you had used DBMS_DST to upgrade the TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE data to version 14, then install the version 14 time zone file in the release to which you are downgrading. This ensures that your TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE data is not logically corrupted during retrieval. To find which version your database is using, query V$TIMEZONE_FILE"
    1) In my case, I used DBMS_DST and now the version if the time zone file is 14. If I have to go back to 10.2.0.4, Should i copy the files to $ORACLE_HOME/ORACORE/ZONEINFO (where $ORACLE_HOME is 10.2.0.4)?
No - you should not copy files from the 11gR2 HOME to the 10.2.0.4 HOME - instead apply patch 9742718 to the 10.2.0.4 HOME (which corresponds to v14 of the DST patch)
Updated DST transitions and new Time Zones in Oracle Time Zone File patches [ID 412160.1]
    2) If my Oracle 10.2.0.4 is shared with multiple instances, will i introduce risk for other databases running on the same oracle home when I copy the files?
You will need to follow steps in 9742718 for all of the databases running out of the 10.2.0.4 HOME
    3) What other steps should I do other than copying the version 14 files into this directory?
    See above

  • PyLoad Daemon issue - unable to restart and slow down system reboot

    Hi all,
I have installed pyLoad from aur
=> https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34435 (by the way, a great download manager - Highly recommended)
I follow the wiki to be able to launch it as a daemon while the system boot up, create so when switching users it still download (and I can also access it via android on my phone.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PyLoad#Daemon
The issue is when executing "/etc/rc.d/pyLoadCore restart/stop" it doesn't respond. And also when I power off or reboot the system it hangs for 10/15 seconds than return to the login screen for another 10/15 seconds then reboot/power off.
I know it's pyLoad daemon creating the issue, I have tested without. Also when pyLoadCore is started via the .desktop the system doesn't hangs at reboot/power off.
Any suggestion why it behave like that?
    Many thanks for your time,
    Looking forward for your replies,

    Hi again,
Is there a way to amend the script for the daemon not to start with the root ("su") rights?

  • System Preferences can't set date and time and other odd behaviour

I have a 2008 Macbook Air, which is beginning to show signs of age, but now appears to have taken on a terminal problem.  I can't set the date and time in the system preferences, even when connected to the internet - the pane just comes up as faded out and I am unable to do anything. The problem started after I accidentally allowed the battery to run down without having shut down the computer and it automatically assumed a date of 1 Jan 2001. I am unable to perform any updates on the machine until the issue is resolved, according to software update.
Other strange things that have happened are that the trackpad no longer responds to the 'tap to click' function or 'two finger' click. In system preferences, I cannot edit energy saver, network (advanced) or account settings - attempting to do so brings up more faded panels or an error message after failure to load.
Has anyone seen similiar behaviour on their mac or have suggestions as how I might resolve the problem?
    Thanks!

If this is recent, what has changed since the last time D&T worked correctly?
I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " Using iPhone " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • AirPort card not installed and other odd behaviour

Sorry for the long post, just want to provide all relevant info.
I have a first gen intel mac book pro 15" that has been working fine from the day I got it (well except for the optical drive, but that's another story) and today it decided to start playing up.
I've tried numerous things after googling around without success. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me find a solution.
When I woke it from sleep by opening the lid today, it wouldn't connect to the wireless network so I clicked on the airport button in the menu and there appeared the message "No AirPort" card installed". Then I noticed that the volume button next to the AirPort button was also greyed out so I looked at Sound preferences and there appeared the message "No output devices found". Sometimes the screen would not turn on after waking from sleep so I tried connecting the laptop to my TV (no other monitor around) to see I could get a picture without success.
After a restart or two, the computer would sometimes not boot – the LED light at the front of the laptop would light up but the computer would not load. A couple of restarts by holding the power button down later, the computer would start.
At one point, when I hooked up the power adapter while logged in, the screen turned off. I had to restart the computer a few times to get it to work again (both with the power hooked up and when running on battery).
I did some googling and tried a number of things to try to resolve the issue without success. I tried the following:
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. Apparently OSX gets confused with network adaptors sometimes.
    - repaired disk permissions
    - reset the NVRAM
    - reset the SMC
    - reset the PMU
    - tried running the hardware tests from the Snow Leopard DVD but my optical drive decided not to accept the DVD when attempting to boot from it (ie. holding the D button) even though it reads the DVD fine from within OSX.
    - i even booted OSX in verbose mode (cmd-V) to see if i could spot anything – didn't notice anything obvious.
Not sure if this has anything to do with these issues, but I recently replaced my power adapter with a new one after the original one stopped working. I got the new style 85W power adapters after talking to the MyMac sales guy about which one suits my laptop. Looks like the cable got damaged over the years.
Short of replacing the PVRAM battery in case it helps (apparently they last around 5 years), is there anything else anyone can suggest I try? or provide insight into the problem?
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks for your suggestion.
One thing I forgot to mention was that I have a Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 and when I boot into Windows 7, the wifi and sound also do not work.
Do you think it is an OS X software problem if I'm having issues when booting into Windows 7?

  • Freezes, Restarts, and other sad stories.

    Hello,
I hope I am posting this in the right forum. Last spring I purchased a Mac Pro for video editing. Over the summer I upgraded and put in Final Cut Studio 2. Everything was working peachy until early fall. I started getting artifacts on my screens. It started on just one screen, i thought the cable was going out. So i replaced the cable. but then i began to get artifacts on both screens. mostly it is a grey line that goes across just one window. sometimes it will be multiple windows with their own grey lines. If i put a window over an artifacted window the grey line goes away (just under the window). To add to the fun the computer has begun to freeze up a lot. I can not force quit, i can not move the mouse, i can not do anything. It mostly happens when I am working in Motion, FCP or Color. I was trying to watch the creative cow color dvd on one screen and have color open in the other but it kept feezing up on me.
Whenever it freezes up I restart it by holding down the power button on the tower. After it restarts, the desktop picture does not show up, neither does any of the icons on the desktop and the mouse pointer is pixelated enough to be unrecognizeable. I can use the mouse and restart it then it fires up fine.
The last thing is randomly (3-5 times a day) both monitors will turn off like they are getting no signal. One of the monitors is a ACD and the little light on the bottom goes off. The light on the computer power button is still on and I can hear fans, I have tried uplugging the monitors and disconnecting them but the only way to get anything to work is to hold the power button down on the tower until the computer fires back up.
    So any ideas?
It is a Mac Pro, with lepord everything is up to date from software update:
it has 4 gigs of ram
    a 320 gb hard drive
    a 750 gb media drive
    and 2 500 gb raid 0'ed together
    all the drives are SATA.
it has a x1900 upgrade kit that I bought from apple.
all the ram came from crucial technology
and it has a black magic intensity card.
    Please HELP!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Tren
and sorry for the bad spelling

cheak your graphics card. I think I reading post that the ATI has overheating issues, expecially when dusty. I have a 2008 Mac Pro with the 2600, and have similar problems.

  • Unable to connect and other mysteries

I am running 10.5.6 on MacbookPro - I am having the following problems
    * Safari - "Safari could not open the page “http://livepage.apple.com/” because the server is not responding." - Firefox is working fine
    * Mail - Connection status - "Mail was able to connect to internet" BUT for every mail account I get "could not connect to server message".
    * iChat - works fine
    What is going on?

I think I'm experiencing the same issue.
My MacBook Pro has been running smoothly for the last year. I don't think any mail settings have been changed or altered in the past six months. This morning I retrieved email from seven mailboxes associated with the same account. But, this afternoon, every time I selected "check mail" another mailbox would fall offline and request I enter the password info.
Despite running disk utility (verify disk permissions & repair disk permissions) and re-entering the password account info in the mail preferences, the problem is still persisting.
    Definitely, bizarre behavior.

  • Using TeX's cmex10.pfb and other odd-coded fonts in Java

I can use Font.createFont on COmputer Modern (maths) fonts like cmmi and cmex postscript type1 files and get a font. But as best I can discern many of the glyphs therein do not get found by the mapping via Unicode and I have been having trouble finding how to access them. Eg cmex10 reports it has 130 glyphs in but only 20 unicode codepoints admit to being populated and most of those do not display anything for me. Can anybody tell me how to select a physical font like that and access the glyphs by the raw unmapped codes that TeX gave them? Sample code would be nice but any pointers to what to do would perhaps help. Thanks! Arthur

Further investigation: Java up to 1.3 or 1.4 had font property config files but those seen no longer present and do not cover fonts loaded from resources well.
If I use the t1disasm disassembler on the type1 font and edit the postscript to change the names of some of the postscript procedures used to draw fonts to A, B, C etc I can then see those glyphs. So Java seems to be using the names of the items in the font encoding vector to try to map chars onto Unicode and just discarding glyphs it can not cope with ????
So maybe I will be able to cope by making a trick version of cmex that names all its glyphs as if they are things in the Unicode space that Java knows about! But that seems pretty gross to me and a better solution that gave me raw access to the fonts by uninterpreted character code would be nicer.

  • Hi I have an iPhone 4 and suddenly it stopped working. Could here notifications and nothing on the diisplay. Wake up  button on top is not working. so unable to restart the phone. Wanted to try restore from iTunes but Find my iPhone (iCloud) is on.

Hi I have an iPhone 4 and suddenly it stopped working. Could here notifications and nothing on the diisplay. Wake up  button on top is not working. so unable to restart the phone. Wanted to try restore from iTunes but Find my iPhone (iCloud) is on. How to recover or restart my Phone

Follow these steps to log into your iCloud account on your computer and deactivate "Find my iPhone" on your device:
Remove an iOS device or Mac on which you can’t turn off Find My iPhone
If you can’t turn off Find My iPhone on the device, turn off the device so it goes offline, then remove it from Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
Note:    You can also remove your iOS device by first erasing it—just follow the instructions below for removing an iOS device you don’t have. You can later restore the device from an iCloud or iTunes backup.
Turn off the device you want to remove.
Sign in to icloud.com/#find on another computer with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud). If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, select the offline device, then click Remove from Account. If you don’t see Remove from Account, click All Devices again, then click the Delete button next to the device. If the device comes online again, it will reappear in Find My iPhone. If your device reappears, turn off Find My iPhone on the device (follow the instructions above for removing a device by turning off Find My iPhone), or if it’s an iOS device and you no longer have it, follow the instructions below for removing an iOS device you no longer have.
Remove an iOS device you no longer have
If you no longer have the iOS device because you gave it away or sold it, you need to remotely erase it before you can remove it.
Sign in to icloud.com/#find with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud). If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, then select the device.
Click Erase [device], then enter your Apple ID password. Because the device isn’t lost, don’t enter a phone number or message.
Note:    If you’re trying to erase a family member’s device, that person will need to enter his or her Apple ID password on this device. If the device is offline, the remote erase begins the next time it’s online. You’ll receive an email when the device is erased.
When the device is erased, click Remove from Account. All your content is erased, and someone else can now activate the device.

My apple TV has been working fine. Now it gives me error -3906 and says it cant connect to the network. it wont accept the password for my wifi.  I have tried to restart and restore both the apple tv and my modem.  still the same issue and same error message.  any ideas?

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

updated ipad mini last night with the ios 7.6 and now am unable to restart the pad, we have tried charging it completely and have had no luck in restarting it

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.
