Unable to restore after installing iOS5

I have an iPad 2 and downloaded iOS 5. I started the update process after backing up the device and syncing it to the latest version of iTunes. The upgrade indicated it was backing up the device and when I came back to check it's progress, there was an error about not being able to connect to the device because I had a security code. I entered the code and was greeted by a new screen that steps me through selecting some settings, connecting to my network and then giving me the option to restore from iCloud, an iTunes backup or setup as a new device. I chose from my iTunes backup.
All my contacts and calendar restored, and my apps.  But I did not get my video and music restored.  I tried manually adding the video and music and only the video was restored. 
Then I got some error messages about a corrupted backup.  I did a back up at 10:30 am which shows up in iTunes, but the only option for a backup now is from 3:09.
When I try to sync I get the following message.  "This computer has previously been synced with an iPad or another iOS device."  Then it gives me the option of setting up as a new iPad or restoring from a backup.  The only option is the back up from 3:09 and when I click on that it says no such back up exists.
So do I need to set this up as a new device?
I'm using a Windows XP SR3 computer.

This seems odd to me that the old iOS would restore on it's own. I'm not aware that you can even do that without some user input to force the downgrade. And you would have to point iTunes to the old iOS restore file on your Mac.
I'm nervous about resynching with the iMAC now. Will it try to force IOS 5 on it again or can I just wait for IOS 6 before I put my toe in the water again?
iTunes should not force anything on the iPad. It needs user input to upgrade. You have to accept the upgrade. It should not happen on it's own. That's why your first statement has me stumped.
If you get the popup asking if you want to download and install iOS 5 - just click off of it - cancel it. You can upgrade if and when you choose to do so. You don't have to accept the upgrade.

    Make sure you enter your new Id in settings/message, settings/facetime.  ANy content that you downloaded with the old ID is forever linked to that old ID and if you have apps that were downloaded with the old ID and you want to update them you can only do that with the old ID.  You could delete those apps and downlad them again ( and pay for them if they are not free apps)

    I'm using mine right now to answer you and I've not had the issues you are having. Have you tried a Restore from Backup?

    I opened a new user on my computer yesterday with administrative privledges. I then opened up an itunes account from this new user. It seemed to go pretty well. I haven't downloaded any new songs yet or moved them to my account. I don't know how to move songs yet. I'm reading iPod and iTunes for Dummeies. Very appropriate for me.     That's not good! We want your software to work properly. Have you tried uninstalling the Verizon Software Utility from your MAC? Do you receive a specific error message?

    I had the same problem and just figured out how to fix it.  Go into your setting screen and then iCloud and turn off the contacts option.  Then click on keep on iPhone.  I did this and now all my contacts are back.  YEAH!!!

    Ok. I disabled hardware acceleration. The only extension is the McAfee Scriptscan for Firefox 15.1.0, which was already disabled. I then disabled all plugins (Acrobat, Google Update, Intel Identity Protection (2x), Java Deployment Toolkit, Java Platform, MS Office 2013, Quicktime, Shockwave, Silverlight), which were all up to date.
    Normal or safe mode still has same result. No startup, no option button and no customize.

    Where did you get the phone? If it was previously locked to a carrier and was hacked/jailbroken to use it on a different carrier, updating the phone has re-locked it to the original carrier. ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize and unlock.

    Made a backup before installing iOS5, now I can't restore it. I have repeated the "continue restore" probably 25-30 times, I have unplugged, restarted and rebooted until my face turned blue, I have tried everything I could find on online communities, and everything has failed so far. The data I had on the phone (contacts are on my computer, same with music and mail) is to 90% expendable, but it's that last 10% that I absolutely, desperately need! Silly me, I thought making a backup actually let you keep the backupped stuff...

    I have not jailbroken the iPhone, i only have dozen or so apps, synced it every other day. tried the DUF mode before connecting it to the pc.
    also, i tried downgrading back and restoring with the following ipsw packages: IOS 4.3.2, 4.3.4, 4.3.5 and 5.
    different error code appears with each ipsw. that didn't work either!
    in the last attampt it got through the whole progress bar (so it might now be a problem with the firmware), but then it err and gave me the same massage.
    I thought those things only happens to Blackberry

    in the meantime i found out by trial and error that i had made a password for it - i am sure because of the password that worked in the end was constructed for it ...
    and yes, i got all my stuff back
    the issue was that it was some time ago already and i simply forgot it, nor had written it down
    it is worthwhile trying the kind of password you would consider using for the back-up ...

    After Updating iTunes to the latest SW, I connected my iPod Touch 3G to the computer then checked iTunes for any app updates, found those that could not be updated to the iPod alone - downloaded them - when complete iTunes synced to my iPod. Worked fine for me.
    I have not installed iOS 5.0.1 - to many problems!!
