Unable to restore aperture library using time machine

Aperture's UI was being barely responsive earlier today, and when I deleted a photo, it ended up actually deleting an entire album.
So I close Aperture and go to my last Time Machine backup to restore my Aperture library. The restore is going perfectly normally, but it gets about halfway through and stops. It throws up a "You do not have permission to do that" notice.
I've tried doing this numerous ways, including an actual "Restore" via Time Machine and also simply pulling the Aperture library off the Time Machine HDD via Finder. Same result no matter what I do.
Help please! I'm looking at an icon of my Aperture library that has all my photos in it, but I cannot copy it!

Thanks, MacDLS. I had checked the permissions under Get Info, but I don't remember an "ignore ownership" option. I'll look for it.
The problem may be a corrupted HDD. After posting my question, I ran Disk Utility, and it was unable to complete a "Repair Disk" on the backup HDD. So I'm assuming there are some corrupted sectors.

  • Restoring aperture library from time machine

I have the new Imac 27 inches 2013.  Large 85 GB iphoto library.  My wife yesterday tried to move files around to create a scrapbooking folder for our daughter.  She ended up putting all the 2012 pictures into a new Project (removing the pictures from each individuals previous Project) and she started deleting many pictures - as she thought she was working with a version of the original).
Now all our 2012 Projects are empty.
I tried restoring from Time macinie from a few days earlier.  Took about 1.5 hours to restore, but when opening Aperture, the library showes still the empty 2012 Project folders and the new Scrapbooking Project just created yesterday is still there!!!
    Am I missing something?
Is there a library folder or file that holds all the metadata and the folders or just the links, and another iphoto library containing just the pictures.
How can I go back to when the scrapbooking Project was not there and all the 2012 Project contain all the original pictures again
    thanks

How did you restore from TimeMachine? It looks like TimeMachine restored to a different location and did not replace the current iPhoto-Aperture Library. Did you select to restore to the Desktop?
You need to direct Aperture to the restored library, otherwise it will just reopen the old one. Select the restored library in the Finder and double-click it. Then Aperture will launch using the new library.
If you do not remember the location where you put the restored library, search with with Spotlight. Type ".photolibrary" in the Spotlight searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen. Then click "Show all in Finder". In the window that will ope, you can select the restored library.

  • Aperture Library and Time Machine back up

I just did my first Time Machine back-up on an external HD, currently have no more space on my Mac's HD.
Can I delete all of my Aperture Library to make room for new projects and rest assured that these are backed-up on my external HD?
How do I look for these backed up files using time machine...I currently view all my pictures using Aperture, I do not have a single file exported...

To use your Time Machine backup with aperture, you need to restore the Aperture library from Time Machine.
A Time Machine backup is a great backup scheme and allows you to recover your files, if need be,  but it is not an archive, that you can use instead of the backed-up files.

Move your Aperture library to a second drive, before you delete the library from your Mac's HD. Otherwise you will not be able to useit with Aperture. Make sure the drive you use for your Aperture library and and other media is formatted for Mac, see this link:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
And include the new drive into your Time Machine backup, so it will be backed up as well.

You’re running an outdated copy of Safari on your Desktop. That won’t work.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Check that the Safari application is in that folder. If it is, use it, and delete the copy on your Desktop. Never move or copy built-in applications.
If you've deleted Safari from the Applications folder, back up all data, then reinstall OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Restoring iPhoto library from time machine

How does one restore iPhoto library from time machine. When I attempt to do so time machine downloads 2/3 of the library and then says:  operation cannot be completed because you do not have permission to access iPhoto library.  Any advice?  I am using so 10.8.2

Try the methods pondini gives here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
Look at the specifics for iphoto..
It is not easy as the versions have changed.. if you are trying to restore a version older than the OS.. not sure what willl happen.
You might also need to do a full restore to an external drive and pluck the library out of there.

  • IPhoto crashed. When reopened, 70  some events were grayed out (no photos).  Restored iPhoto library from Time Machine, fewer grayed events.  Said yes to a msg on fixing library, 3K more photos. Still wrong.  What next to do?

iPhoto crashed. When reopened, 70+  some events were grayed out (no photos).  Restored iPhoto library from Time Machine, fewer grayed events.  Said yes to a msg on fixing library, 3000 more photos. Still wrong.  What next to do?

Do you still have the library that you were using when the crash occurred?  If so apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Thanks den.thed,
Apologies for not replying back sooner - I've been away.
Although your suggestion helped me in getting a copy of Lion that I could use, it didn't help with the restore from Time Capsule issue.  I had to download the Lion app onto my MacBook & then transfer it across but it wouldn't let me upgrade my OS for some reason, so I ended up wiping the iMac completely and restoring via my Snow Leopard install disk.  For some reason, this time, it let me have the option of using Setup Assistant to access the Time Capsule for a complete restore.
Now, over a week later, with various bits of tweaking and reinstalling some apps that didn't seem to come across, I have my system back.
    Thanks for the help anyway.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Restore iphoto library from Time machine using external drive

I keep my iPhoto library in an external drive (iomega 1 TB) I use Time Machine (Time Capsule) for my back-up of iphoto.  The external drive is failing.  I have bought an new external drive and wish to restore my iPhoto library to this new drive.  The steps for restoring from Time Machine require me to click on the iphoto library and then enter time machine.  I cannot do this as the folder is now unreadable in the drive and I do not wish to restore it to this old drive in any event.
I have accessed the time machine drive and can see the iphoto back up is there.
    What is my next step?

  • Restore external HDD using Time Machine

    Hello Apple users,
First let me explain my time machine set up so that you guys will be able to help me out. I've 2 external USB hard drives: one is 1TB and the other is 500GB. In the 500 GB USB HDD I store my main Aperture 3 library and other things like music, movies etc., and I use the other external hard drive to backup my files using Time Machine.
So after, I've backed-up my external hard drive as well as my mac using Time Machine, I can't access my backups in my external hard drive without connecting the 500GB hard drive. What I mean to say is that, when I enter Time Machine without connecting my 500 GB USB hard drive, I'm unable to see the files that are saved in the backup. Does that mean if my 500 GB hard drive goes kaput, I won't be able to restore those?
When I do connect the 500 GB hard drive, I can see the files that are stored there and the changes that took place using Time Machine.

  • Can't restore iPhoto Library from Time Machine.   Faults halfway through.

POSTED EARLIER ON iPHOTO 9 DISCUSSION-recommended checking here.
My wife is running a Mac Mini with iPhoto 9. She has let her hard drive space drop to about 4gigs. This morning, she opened iPhoto and nothing came up. I looked at some of the posts here and did the following 1) ran disk utility to repair permissions 2) removed enough files to get her available hard drive space above 10gigs. Mostly by moving to her external hard drive. 3) Based on what I was reading, I copied her iPhoto library and related files to a folder on her external drive. I then deleted the iPhoto library file itself. 4) I went into TimeMachine and ran it back to the last backup yesterday and asked it to Restore that file.
The process went forward smoothly until it hit about 5.5gigs of the 46.5gig file. At that point it stopped and a dialogue box said "the operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access iPhoto library". I ran it again---essentially it fails after restoring the thumbnails. I checked permissions for iPhoto and it shows 'read and write' as the settings.
Any suggestions? Is using Time Machine for this purpose not workable? Thanks in advance for your help.

Disk utility ran through the REPAIR disk function on the Time Machine drive and came back good. I then ran the VERIFY disk function on the Main disk and it also came back good. I was not offered a REPAIR disk option for the Main Disk.
    No errors. Any other suggestions?

  • Problems while restoring iPhoto library with Time machine

    Hello,
I've had some problems in iPhoto 11 for a while. Pics being removed or altered in different ways.
I then decided to restore my iPhoto library to an earlier date using Time machine. I used a one week old backup and after 2 hours or so when it was done, no pictures in the folder anymore! I panicked and restored once again, this time on the whole "Pictures" folder. Now i cannot even open the folder, i get this message - "The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I am the system administrator.. ive checked the "get info" option and made sure that all users can "read and write" in the folder.
When I try to restore the Pictures folder again i get a message telling me that it cannot be restored because the folder is being used... even if i dont use it!
I really need help to solve this... 60Gb pictures are gone
Please help me! What can i do? Is there any way to do a complete system restore for 1 week so i get rid of these problems? Or what would be the best and easiest fix?
Sorry if i placed this thread in the wrong place, but i think there are multiple problems that belong in different areas...

First ry the following on the library:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If there's no improvement continue with: Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, and if needed Option #1 and Option #2.

  • Restoring Safari Windows Using Time Machine?

I had a number of windows open in Safari for a research project.  While traveling, I accidentally let my machine run its battery down and had to restart.  I restarted in a hotel with an annoying internet login splash page so when Safari opened, all of my browser windows re-directed to the hotel splash page.  On some tabs, I could navigate back to the page I'd had open but others were lost.
I'd like to restore the session I had open before my trip using Time Machine.  I closed Safari, went to Library/Safari/LastSession.plist in Time Machine and restored the file from an earlier version.  But when I opened Safari back up, my pre-trip session did not open.  Instead, the session from right before I closed and restored opened.  I tried restoring the entire Library/Safari folder, but still the same thing!
Though a relatively minor problem I had some important research articles open that will be a pain for me to find again.
Also, I can't understand what's going wrong.  From everything else I've read, restoring the LastSession file should do the trick.
Any thoughts on where I might be going wrong / how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

I have restored the same file (~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist) from a Time Machine Backup. Then I restarted Safari and selected "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" from the History menu. That worked for me. I'm running Safari v6.0.5.
Does anyone know what the SessionState key is for that this file lists for each tab?
LastSession.plist lists for each previously open tab:
    <dict>
              <key>AncestorTabIdentifers</key>
              <array/>
              <key>SessionState</key>
              <data>
              String of data          </data>

As I was executing the command "delete junk mail" I noticed some files in there that I never saw, and then they disappeared. I tried restoring them using Time Machine but the Junk Mail folder is greyed out. All the other folders are recoverable, but not Junk. Can anybody help?

I see the same thing - junk mailboxes are grayed out in TM. However, the actual mailbox folders in finder are backed up. in finder go to homedirectory/library/mail and look for junk mailbox folders inside your account folders. start TM while in there and recover the messages you need.
