Unable to restore bookmarks from XP to Windows 7 due to unsupported file type

Im having problems transferring my bookmarks from xp machine to a Windows 7 machine. I just verified that both machines are running Firefox v. 4.0.1. I was advised to save the bookmarks.html file on the xp machine and when I copied it to the Windows 7 machine. I received the error that it is an unsupported file type. Can someone advise on how I can get this done? Thanks in advance.

  • IDVD: Files exported from iMovie 11, one works, one "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format"

I used footage from the same camera (taken on the same weekend using the same settings) in several different iMovie "projects". All were shared from iMovie 11 as "File" using the quality setting "SD 480p".
In Quicktime Player, all ".mp4" files will play and they show the following info in its inspector:
    Format: H.264, 854 x 480
                  AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
    FPS: 29.97
One exported file will drag, drop, and burn in iDVD just fine. The other two files show the error "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format" as soon as I try and drag them into iDVD.
The only difference I can find is that the one file that works is about 803MB, while the files that don't work are 1.87GB and 3.98GB.
All files and the iDVD project are in the same folder on my startup volume. I've tried deleting com.apple.idvd but that didn't help. I've tried rebooting and starting the iDVD project from scratch but I get the same results.
    Mac OS 10.9.1
    iMovie 10.0.1
    iDVD 7.1.2
    Any ideas?

Hello Bengt and thank you again for the replies.
As I mentioned in my previous posts, I'm using iMovie 10.0.1 which has very limited quality adjustments. In every case I chose the smallest size, which iMovie 10.0.1 calls "SD 480p (854 x 480)". I used this same setting on all exports.
I still have iMovie HD (6.0.4) and iMovie '11 (9.0.9) on my iMac so I tried both of them. In both cases, they could import only the file that works in iDVD. Both older versions of iMovie choked on the longer movies shared from iMovie 10.0.1.
I have many many hours into the editing of these clips and I do not want to have to go back and redo everything in an older version of iMovie. Might I be better off going with a different DVD creation software? Or am I out of luck? Because I can't really change iMovie 10.0.1's export settings, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do to get it to export it as something that iDVD can use (really, I can't even tell why it's different and why iDVD doesn't like it).
The software "WonderShare DVD Creator" has no issue with any of the files I've exported from iMovie 10.0.1.

  • I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

Also, when i save the back-up file to the desktop, it never gives me the option to choose that back-up file when I try to restore. Thanks!! :-)

  • Restoring bookmarks from Windows Easy Transfer

I need to restore my bookmarks from Windows Easy Tranfer.I saw the same question asked and answered but the answer didn't explain how to transfer the bookmarks manually. I did find a Firefox file and tried to import from the organize libraries drop down. It gave me the message "importing will replace current bookmarks are you sure...?" I told it to proceed but I don't see my bookmarks. What do I need to do to solve this?

  • How-to consolidate bookmarks from 2 different Windows users

I have a few user names on my Desktop PC. I am running Windows 7 Home. And would like to consolidate my bookmarks lists.
In other words so each user gets the same bookmarks listing containing the sites of every one of the users put together in an amagamated form without repeats; a sort of an unique Master List of all bookmarks to be installed for every user to have it as soon as they open Firefox.
I am running Firefox 3.6 17, how do I make that Master List?
Is that what is described as 'syncing'?
    Thank you kindly

It will involve a small amount of work.
The basic process is export the bookmarks to an HTML file, then import the HTML files to one user account. You can then use an add-on to eliminate the duplicates. Finally you can export the master list to a JSON file, and then restore the JSON file to the other computers.
    * To export to an HTML file - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Exporting+bookmarks+to+an+HTML+file
    * To import the HTML files - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Importing+Bookmarks+from+an+HTML+File
Note: The article refers to selecting "Organize Bookmarks" in the bookmarks menu, if any of the computers are using Firefox 4, you need to select "Show All Bookmarks" instead.
Once you have amalgamated the bookmarks into one user account, you can use the CheckPlaces add-on to remove any duplicates - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/checkplaces/
Finally, for details of how to export the bookmarks to a JSON file, and restore that file on the other computers, see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks
If you want to keep the bookmarks in sync, the Firefox Sync add-on may be of use to you (this is built into Firefox 4) - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-sync/

  • Unable to restore iPad from recent iTunes update.

So I updated to iTunes 10.7. Afterwards it told me I had to wipe my iPad 2 and restore it. After wiping my iPad however I am unable to restore it. It's stuck in recovery mode. So here is what I have done:
I have read support articles like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097
I have rebooted, reset, unplugged and re-plugged my iPad multiple times.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes three times now.
I have tried different USB ports.
I have tried to direct Windows Vista to the Mobile Device Support/Drivers folder however Windows can not locate the usbaapl.inf. It's there but windows doesn't recognise it.
I am tapped out here. Any advice would be appreciated, my iPad is a paper weight at this point.

Explain which way you tried to restore from a backup.
Did you try to use iCloud? If you did, what happened when you tried?
Or did you use iTunes and what happened when you tried that way?

  • Unable to Sync bookmarks from ipad to itunes.

I have been completely unable to sync my safari bookmarks from my ipad 2 to windows PC.
In itunes, where according to this (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296) under the 'info' tab I should be able to click sync, I only get the following message:
'Your bookmarks are being synced with your ipad over the air from icloud' and get no other option.
Yet when I log into my icloud account, there is no safari or bookmarks, despite the fact that on my Ipad icloud settings I said to have Safari synced!
Anyone know a way to get round this problem?
Or failing that, ANY way to copy my bookmarks onto my laptop? (aside from emailing them individually).
    Thanks so much,
    Nicky

For now I have solved the problem, and it seems to come down to iCloud working better on Windows. I open Parallels running Windows 8 and updated xmarks in chrome and downloaded my good clean bookmarks. Then i installed icloud control panel and the icloud chrome extension (why is there no Mac version of this?) and switched over to Safari on Mac and the bookmarks quickly synced to the good clean version and showed up on my iOS devices as well.
It might have been partially the 2 computer thing, but no matter what Apple should have the same functionality they offer Windows Users on the Mac! I know they want you to use Safari, but I do not and will not. I use Chrone and Firefox, and will continue to do so!

  • Unable to sync bookmarks from Safari

I have been unable to sync my bookmarks to my iPad from my MacBook Pro. It does not work from either iTunes or iCloud. Why doesn't this work? Am I missing a step??
    Thanks

If you export bookmarks from Safari to an html file, can you import them into Firefox using Import from the bookmark library window Import and Backup menu item?

  • After I restore bookmarks from a json file and they display correctly in the browser, why the next time I start Firefox4, do the old bookmarks display?

Three times I have restored from a bookmarks json file and each time the bookmark folders display showing the new bookmarks but each time after I exit and restart FF4, the original bookmarks that were replaced by bookmarks from my json file reappear. The restore process seems to work exactly as it should but new bookmarks are apparently not saved since the old ones display each time I restart FF4.
I am using WinXP on an older Dell laptop with 2Gb memory and current FF4 as of April 23, 2011.
I don't know what to do to make the new bookmarks become permanent. Help?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
