Unable to restore broken Iphone 5

Need help. Need to restore to send back and screen is shattered. Itunes needs me to allow access by responding to phone but screen in unusable. I am not sure how to restore this phone. I push both home and wake/sleep button for 10 seconds and the phone does not shut off. What can I do?

It sounds like you are wanting to restore, or completely erase your device but you cannot use the screen to Trust the computer. Since it sems to be recognized in iTunes when connected, you can put the device into recovery mode, and then that will force iTunes to restore the device. This article will help you get that going:

I am unable to restore my iPhone 4 from recover mode for almost a week now.

I am unable to restore my iPhone 4. It is in recovery mode and shows the connect to itunes screen. Itunes gives me many error messages, one saying "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. The network connection could not be established." and I do not understand if it is referring to my internet or a Network on the phone. My internet connection is fine and the phone does not have service on it since I havent gotten it to work for the last week. I have also tried multiple computers to try to restore it and recover images, but nothing has worked. Please help me!

Contact Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 to find out. But they will most likely tell you what you already know...it needs to be restored against the computer is was last linked with.

I have the latest iTunes 12.1.2.27. However, I am unable to restore my iphone4s. iTunes was able to detect an iPhone in recovery mode. The error is something like "Unable to restore the iphone. Make sure you have the latest iTunes and try again."

I have tried all the steps in the apple support.

There is nothing to backup.
If the device is showing the Connect to iTunes screen, there is nothing on the device to backup.
The first step in the update process is a backup... restore the device using that backup and try again.

What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>About=>Carrier?

Unable to restore my iphone!

Today I downloaded from itunes the last available software, but iphone didn't install it correctly and showed me an error according to which itunes suggested me to restore my iphone. Ok, I tried to, but while it makes the preparation to restore the phone, it shows "unknown error (21)" and aborts the operation! So, I don't know what to do - my phone only shows only an apple and nothing more!
Also I tried to restore it in DFU mode - neither it helps. I downloaded software apart, but when I try to chose it to restore, itunes doesn't allow me to chose a folder, neither the files inside it.
Do you have more ideas? I can't wait till monday for apple support shops to open ((((

The firmware on your phone is somehow corrupted. It either came out of the box that way or you tried to jailbreak it.
First, if you haven't already, install iTunes version 8 (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/).
Next, plug the phone's USB cord into a USB port on the back of your computer (not a hub or a port on the front). Plug the other end of the cord into the phone (don't bother with the dock at this time). iTunes should launch and restore your phone. Give it up to 5 minutes to recognize the phone (it usually takes a minute), and 15 minutes to an hour to restore, depending on your Internet connection speed. DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE UNTIL THE RESTORE IS COMPLETE OR YOU GET AN ERROR MESSAGE. Ignore any displays on the phone during this process, including an icon that says to plug it in. It's already plugged in.
If it doesn't recognize the phone after 5 minutes go to plan B. Disconnect the phone, press and hold the HOME button, and while holding it, connect to the cord AND CONTINUE HOLDING. After about 1 minute the phone should enter DFU mode and start restoring.
If this fails go to Plan C. Take it to an Apple store and ask them to fix it. Make a Genius Bar appointment first at http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/. Look up your nearest store and there will be a link to make an appointment.
