Unable to Restore Disk Image of TM Backups
I am trying to Restore disk images of TM backups to a newly formatted (OSx extended - journaled) 500MB firewire drive. I created 2 partitions, One for each TM image of the backups for my two Macbooks. When I follow the prompts to restore in DU, the process starts and then fails. I am sure that I am missing something. Can I get some guidance from the experts please?
I am preparing my machines to upgrade to Snowleopard, but I need to be sure I have my backups in place before I make room on the internal hard drives for the upgrade.
Thanks in advance,
Capt Ron

You are probably sorry you got into this one. I have not explained it well. I guess it boils down to this: Is it possible to restore my TM backups on a new volume, from a disk image of the original backups?
I've never tried it, but apparently not. In Leopard, only Disk Utility and SD are known to work.
In answer to your questions, the original backups (one for each computer) were copied to a disk image. Both computers were originally backed up on separate drives, but the addition of another computer to the family necessitated combining the TM backups for my 2 laptops onto one drive. I could not copy them using the method in the FAQ (#18) because I wanted to use the same drive, only with 2 partitions. I tried adding a partition with DU but it failed each time due to lack of space.
As long as each partition was at least as large as the corresponding old drive, that should work. But you can't copy, say, 100 gb of backups into a 50 gb partition: you must copy the entire partition into a new partition. If the old partition was not full, and old backups were not scattered over the empty space, you may be able to copy a larger onto a smaller partition.
Do you still have the original backups? If so, assuming they were each used exclusively for TM, had TM begun deleting old backups?
If so, and if the new drive can be partitioned into 2 partitions each at least as large as the old disks, try it again. Be sure to check the *Erase Destination* box; you cannot copy them properly without that.

Can't create restore disk image
I want to create a restore disk image of my os x hardrive using disk utility. Everytime I try to create the image it says unable to create disk resource busy. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks,
MattHi carmat06,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
How much hard disk space is available? Be aware that MacOS X needs the same amount of hard disk space for a temporary disk image as the final disk image will account for.
You should also create the disk image on a separate drive.

Unable to create restore disk image with Disk Utility
I've tried three times in order to create a restore image of the users' volume of my Powerbook. I followed exactly the procedure explained typing "man asr" in a terminal window. I booted the Powerbook in target disk mode while connected to my iMac G5 from which Disk utility was run. Every time the disk image creation failed with a log report like this:
Creating Image HOME_HD.dmg

Copying...
/Volumes/HOME_HD: Authentication error

Unable to create HOME_HD - Input/output error.
I don't know how my imported music could create such a problem to Disk utility, nevertheless I removed the incriminated song from the Music library but another one raised to be not accessible. Then I booted the powerbook from the supplied Tiger DVD too, and I got an error over the music file, something about an allocation that was 190 instead of 1, I got the volume repaired from Disk utility but the Disk image creation failed again without any hint because booting from DVD does not allow to save log file anywhere. Why on Earth I can't manage such a critical task as back up under Tiger while using Panther everything worked like a charm following the same procedure? Is anyone experiencing something similar?
Greetings
GianmarcoHi Lee, thank you for your answer, indeed I've just read carefully your article few hours ago, while I googled the net to find some hints on my issue. I think that I've followed exactly the right procedure to make the back up image, and can't find what is wrong. Actually Disk utility Repair disk successfully repaired the allocation bit (whatever that means) of the music files but that wasn't enough to let the creation of the disk image. Quite odd that the music files where recognized as messed up by Disk utility only booting from Tiger DVD and not while the Powerbook was connected to an iMac running Tiger too.
I'll do further investigation during weekend.
Greetings

Disk Utility "Unable to create" Disk Image "error -39"
I am trying to create a disk image using Disk Utility of my wife's user area for backup. Everytime I try, I get the same result. Disk Utility spends several hours creating the archive, then at the very end it generates an error message and terminates the process. The error message is always "unable to create "user" - error -39".
The problem follows her data and not her computer. I backed up her user to an external drive and did the image creation on another computer. Same result.
When I do the same on my computer, the process completes fine.
What problem is Disk Utility having? Where can I find the meaning of Disk Utilitility's -39 error?
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)I am still experimenting. To narrow the problem, I decided to create individual disk images of the folders in the User folder. The first one I tried was 7 GB and worked fine. Overnight, I tried one that is 13 GB. It failed with an out of room message on the startup disk! The startup disk has 17 GB free. Nothing should have been written to the startup disk!
This time, I configured Disk Utility to read from the startup disk and write to an external disk. The destination disk had more than enough space. But, I ran out of space on the source. It appears that Disk Utility is writing all or a portion of the compressed file to either the startup or the source disk and running out of room.
Previously, when I created the image of my user folder (instead of my wife's), the source was my user folder on the startup disk and the destinaion for the image was on an external disk. The difference I see is that my startup disk has enough free space for the entire compressed image file.
In my first attempt that gave me the -39, both the source and the destination disks were external. So maybe Disk Utility is creating the image on the source and at the end copying it to the destination. This would explain the difference in the error messages.
I'll try to confirm all of this in the next few days and report my findings. -
Time Machine Restore vs Restoring disk image to Macbook Pro
Hi guys,
Is it best to restore my new Macbook pro Retina from a 2011 Macbook pro via a time machine backup or is it best and easyer to restore my Disk Image from my old Macbook Pro 'Macintosh HD' to my new SSD in a 2013 Macbook pro Reitna via Disk utility??If you have a new Mac and an old Mac, then it's probably best just to use Migration Assistant to transfer your data, settings and apps from the old Mac to the new one.
If you have fitted a new, blank SSD to the new Mac, then that will need an OS, obviously, before you run Migration Assistant. However, you can transfer an image of the old computer to the new one -- I cloned my 2009 MacBook's drive straight onto the SSD I put into my 2012 MBP.
Usually, any OS will work on any Mac (that it supports), but that's less true of brand new machines, particularly with new hardware technologies like Retina.
I would install the OS from the Recovery Firmware, and then migrate the data using MA. -
Need help restoring disk image
I recently backed up my HDD to an image and stored it on an external USB hard drive. I just put a new hard drive in my macbook and so far am unable to restore from the image. I used a bootable mountain lion USB, opened the disk utility, partitioned the drive, and tried to restore using the image as the source and the partition as the destination. It scans the image for a while and eventually gives a "unable to scan, internal error". I can't seem to get past this. I have tried mounting the .dmg before restoring as well.
I went ahead and installed a new copy of os x and that works fine. I tried creating a second partition after booting into os x and restoring the image that way and no luck. I also tried SuperDuper but after it says it copied the contents of the image to the other partition, I browse to that drive and it seems to be blank. I am not sure what to do here. Any help?Well that is the problem. Not sure why you can open the BC partition but Mac can't make a image of a Windows system, llet alone restore it. OS X can't write NTFS. If it could no one would ever need a program like Win Clone to clone the BC partition on their Mac

Just completed creation of a disk image and restored that image. Everything worked fine here. I installed media center after I created the dvd image. Restored back to before the install of media center. Only one problem I encounter
What I did was put a blank DVD in without formatting the DVD when I first started the creation of the backup image, it was at that time the error occurred. I went to MyComputer and used the format command, went back to the restore job and did retry
selection. creation of the Restore backup job started, about 5 or 10 seconds, more on the 10 side, an information prompt located in the bottom right saying formatting disk however the backup job was already started.
I used the shift key while selecting restart to use the restore image utility all worked great no errors.

Time capsule error "Unable to create disk image"
Apart from all the various issues on the discussions I noticed the following with the latest releases on the TC 7.4.1.
My time capsule stopped backing up and started asking for a password; also the capsule was unable to mount on the desktop in the finder. If I gave the TC an I.P could mount it but it still refused to back up, one of the other things I noticed the TC started to ask for a password, which it never asked for before the software update.
My solution given two weeks of late nights going out of my mind were to delete my prefs including my keychain prefs and repair my permissions using disk utility, which found several problems, my TC now backs up after several weeks without it going backwards and forwards through previous updates etc.
It's drastic but it worked for me.
Hope this helpsI am still experimenting. To narrow the problem, I decided to create individual disk images of the folders in the User folder. The first one I tried was 7 GB and worked fine. Tar ditto cp or create disk image as a backup of /home directory
in your opinion, what would be the best method for backing up a /home directory to an external drive, possibly missing out the Library directory.
im looking at commands like tar, ditto, cp, and also thinking of a disk image. im less familiar with disk image. other suggestions?
im seeking a method, one or two lines, or basic shell script, that can be put into crontab
i would like to retrieve on a file, directory or recursive root (/home) basis.
and would also like incremental and full backups. aka. checks for newer file dates.
any words of wisdomI have been using rsync on Mac for about 5 years, but rsync was not included until I think 10.4. Before then you had to install it yourself. rsync works on all Linux based servers since it is a standard Linux command, however the Mac version needs a few adjustments due to the resource fork problem. Hopefully the rsync included with 10.5 will be fully compatible in all categories.

Help restore disk image from firewire drive to new serial ata drive
Heres my situation I inherited a mac mini without the installation cd. I also have an imac with the oem installation disk. I made a disk image of the mac mini (10.4.11) with disk utility on to an attached firewire disk. I've ordered a new drive for the mac mini and want to lay down the 10.4.1 disk image and then upgrade to snow leopard. I boot with my OEM Disk (10.5) and go into disk utility and select the image for restore. It reports running time of 2 hours and shows progress but when I come back the cd seems to be thrashing and no matter how long I leave it it doesn't restore. What are my options here is it possible to use the 10.5 startup disk to restore an image file made by 10.4.11

How to Restore disk image to smaller image?
Hi there;
Not entirely sure if this is where this question needs to be posted.
I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I purchased a Imac g5 1.6 ghz (2004) and want to install Leopard (10.5) on it.
I have a DMG copy of the installer but my problem was that the file is too large to be burned on a single layer DVD (i know I can burn it on a DL DVD, but I don't want to buy a pack of 5 DVD's and only need One). So I used disk utility and created a sparse image (8.7GB) and restore the DMG to that image. I stripped all the unneccessary files (languages and printer drivers). then I went back to create a 4.7 GB sparse disk image to restore the newly formatted DMG, but It still says that there is not enough space on the disk, when my Image is 4.7GB and the image is 4.45 GB.
My understanding is that even though i'm only using 4.45GB it still shows as the original 8.7GB.
I'm currently running OSX 10.7.4 (lion) on my macbook pro and disk utility wont let me complete the task I have at hand.
I'm new to this so could someone help me?You can get

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Unable to place disk image in Camera Archives
The Final Cut Pro X manuals show that one can import a disk image of a movie into Final Cut Pro X by opening the camera archives. I have made a disk image file (.img) from an iMovie 6 project file. (The video appears as a VTS file in the Video TS folder.) How do I get it to appear in my camera archives file so that I can import it into Final Cut Pro X?
That's a disk image for an authored DVD. You can't. It's in an MPEG-2 that's not supported for production only for delivery. You would need to use something like MPEG Streamclip to rip it.

Curves in UIScrollView and zoom : how to keep the width ?
Dear all, I have a very simple issue. I successfully implemented a UIScrollView with a Bezier Curve, and the zoom is also working fine. (I'm also using a CATiledLayer to improve the final render. But it's optional for this issue...) The point is the
