Unable to restore iOS 4.2.1 profile on iOS 5

Bought the new iPhone 4S (iOS 5) to replace my iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1 - latest possible version).
I'm getting an error when setting up the iPhone 4S and asking it to restore from my iPhone 3G pofile. Same thing happens if I try to trying to restore the iOS 4.2.1 profile directly to the iOS 5 device. Everything runs smoothly but in the end I get an error.
I would really hate to loose 3 years of call and SMS history, just because I'm a upgrading.
I've even tried just exchange the SMS db file within the backup (taking the one from 4.2.1 and overwriting the one in the iOS 5 backup) but that just gives me an error when restoring. Telling me that the backup is invalid.
I assume that the format of the SMS db file has changed. And I also assume that the problem would be solvd if I was able to upgrade 4.2.1 to 4.3 etc.
Does anyone know a way around this?

Hello,
The culprit was Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 (KIS 2011). I disabled it.
Then, the installation of iOS 4.2 was smooth.

IPhone 4S - IOS 8.x unable to restore back to IOS 7.x

I backed up my phone prior to upgrading to IOS 8.x, however i'm unable to restore back to IOS 7.x.
I've done a phone reset and restore but IOS 8.x is still present.
How can I restore back to IOS 7.x?
NB: Apple should not have allowed upgrades to IOS 8.x on this hardware. The iPhone 4S is seriously lacking in horsepower when it comes to running IOS 8.x

Apple does not support the downgrading of iOS. You can retrieve your data from your backup but not the outdated iOS7. You phone's firmware was updated so you cannot go backwards to iOS7. iPhones have always been this way.

Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.

Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.

Restore using another USB cable.
Restore your device on another computer.
If you continue to see error 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your device, contact Apple for support.

I have the same problem. Something happened during the download and froze iTunes. After spending three days searching these forums with the dead iPad, the only thing I got to work was to try downloading iOS 5 using my sons computer. This worked. However I cannot now get my computer's iTunes to sync with my iPad.. It contains the same error message (1602) and has the same problem as before. It is not an antivirus problem. Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
