Unable to Restore Windows XP on Satellite M55-S139

I installed Ubuntu on my Windows XP on Satellite M55-S139. I didn't like it so I'm trying to run the Recovery disk. I put it in the computer and the process starts. it says it's going to erase my hard drive and replace it with the original default system install. I elect to continue. I watch the progress bar as it copies all the files. The restore completes and it tells me to remove the disk. Then I just keep getting the Toshiba screen it turns black and then comes back on again but never boots up.
I've run the recovery disk 4 times. One time it asked me if I wanted to remove the partitions and I said yes.
Why does it always say starting Windows 98 when I run this disk?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I did a lot of searching and most of the proposed solutions require a Windows installation CD.
My computer did not come with Windows XP installation CD, it just came with a Toshiba Recovery CD, which is not the same thing. And I could not create a Boot Disk because my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.
I finally figured out how to remove Ubuntu from my computer and get it to boot in Windows XP.
You need a free program called MbrFix. To use it, You must log in as administrator in Windows Safe Mode.
Start your computer.
Arrow down to Windows
Hit Enter and tap the F8 key immediately.
Log in as administrator.
Open your browser and go to:
http://www.sysint.no/products/Downlo...S/Default.aspx
Download MbrFix. If you can't find it, Google MbrFix, as it's available at cnet.com and other sites.
Then extract the contents to C:\
Go to Start, click on Run and type 'command'
This will open a terminal.
Type 'cd\'
You will get a C:\> prompt
Enter: MbrFix /drive 0 fixmbr /yes
Now the GRUB menu will be gone and you will automatically boot into Windows.
Next:
Delete Ubuntu partition(s) by going to to the Control Panel>Computer Management>Disk Management
Reallocate the empty space to back to C drive.
Done!

  • Satellite M55-S139 Laptop : Annoying Music After Keyboard Inactivity

    I have a Toshiba M55-S139 laptop. When it is turned on and there has been no keyboard activity for 5 minutes, the screen changes to a Toshiba screen, and music plays. When I then hit any key, it takes me to with Windows log-in screen where I have to type my password again.
    How can I turn off this annoying feature ? I have looked through the User's Manual, Windows set -up, etc. and can't find anything

  • TM2 unable to restore Windows 7 after Windows 8 Release Preview - have restore DVDs, still fails.

    Hello!  I've pretty much run out of idea's on how to troubleshoot this so I'll do a summary of what I changed with the machine and then troubleshooting details further on.  The particular hp touchsmart notebook I have is a TM2 1079cl,  Product Number: WA812UA#ABA.  I've only had it for the length of 2012, I purchased it used from another person about 1 year ago now specifically to toy with Windows 8 before it's release.  As far as the hardwares actual age I can tell from the warrenty information that it was manufactured in late 2009, it states the warranty period was from January 2010 to Jan 2011.
    Alright, so my history with the OS changes goes:
    -> Purchased this TM2 in early 2012, ran the recovery partition to wipe it clean of the previous owners use and it ran through installation perfectly fine, then on a clean Windows 7 as if it were new.  I'd also made use of a bootable Acronis True Image 2010 disk to make a hard disk image of the three other partitions for recovery (though I did not include the freshly installed windows 7 partition, figured it wouldn't matter if recovery could do it's thing right?)
    -> Some days later I loaded the second of the three preview releases for Windows 8 onto it (Customer Preview build I believe).   All worked fine and it dual booted between the two without issue, afaik the only real changes it made amounted to converting the primary partition Windows 7 was installed on to an extended partition and splitting the existing Windows 7 partition equally 50/50 inside that extended partition.  It had also overriden the boot manager / bootloader that was there before but again not surprised.
    -> When Release Preview build came out over summer I did an update from inside windows 8 and all seemed fine still.  The change between the two preview builds did develop an issue where I couldn't shut windows 8 down without a handful of error boxes poping up but I'm pretty sure that was unrelated.
    -> More recently about thanksgiving time I decided to give the laptop to a family member with a archiac desktop that's got issues and general old factor that makes it not worth updating.   This person is pretty adverse to change so that whole "Win8-vs-what people are used to" thing comes into play.   I decided to wipe the TM2 clean back to the OS it shipped with.    Here's where I'm now stuck:
    => Before doing anything I made another True Image of the HDD as a just incase, glad I did.
    => Tried F11 to load the recovery partition only to find that because of the bootloader being tampered with by Windows 8 it doesn't actually go to the HP recovery partition anymore despite still being on the hard drive.
    => Grabbed the hard disk image from the beginning of the year with the recovery partition on it before windows 8 touched the machine, wiped the hdd completely clean, restored the disk image.   I could now get into HP recovery fine but....
    => I got a dialog error right off the bat saying that the recovery partition could not install and instructing me to insert disc 1 of the recovery software.  Well I never made the dvd's myself with the one-time use burning feature when it worked so that's out and I had not bought the discs from HP's support site.   At this point I'm puzzled though why the recovery partition can't install despite the computer loading up into recovery just fine.  For example command prompt in the Windows PE environment is functional and all files seem to be present.   Maybe some verification that the recovery partition isn't pirated might have been triggered by hard disk imaging, i'm really not sure?
    => I then made used of the HDD image I'd just created before trying this and restored the other copy of the drive (Win8 tampered bootloader, Win8 release preview, win7, the inaccessible recovery partition and all).   Windows 7 and 8-RP could still boot.   Googled around a bit about the recovery partition key (F11) getting messed up by Windows 8 and came to find I only needed to set recovery as the "Active" partition to get it to start.  Sure enough that got it to start but I'm running into the same issue where the actual recovery partition loads up but now refuses to begin the restore process without HP dvd's.  Since I know for certain this worked months ago I guess once again since I ended up restoring that version of the recovery partition it may have also declared itself tampered with... great.
    => Contemplated what to do for a bit and then finally just ordered the DVD's from HP in December, I specifically got the recovery DVD's for my model and they did come from HP directly, not second hand from ebay or another person.  Wasn't really that bad, $16, very reasonable price.  Should be set right, legit OEM DVD's to use?  Nope....
    => The DVD's came.  Two discs for main recovery and a third for applications and drivers.   Boot off disc one and it states it's formatting the drive how it wants (good, i'm liking this so far), copies all of the contents of the three discs to the hdd and begins it's reboot and install cycle.    Reboots a handful of times, you can tell it gets well past copying the contents of any of the discs and into installing windows.  You see the Windows 7 boot logo a few times and even the standard "preparing your things" background that's similar to the Windows 7 login screen.  The screen definitely gets as far as installing the proper graphics driver (and others I assume at that time) as the resolution changes to native for the TM2's LCD near the end.
    =>  Suddenly on the 3rd or 4th (I think) reboot of installing windows it starts for a moment then says shutting down, it reboots and it's back in the windows PE environment of recovery setup again (this time coming from the hard drive, not the DVDs) and says it's failed to restore and offers to start everything over from the very beginning.
    That's where I'm stuck.  The Recovery Partition died on me post-Windows 8 and the offical HP recovery DVD's are failing me (and oddly they're failing me seemingly in the very last steps of windows 7 restore, well after the DVD's themselves are no longer being read from).
    >> Question 1:  Does the HP recovery partition "self destruct" if it gets imaged by hard drive imaging software and restored?  I can confirm mine worked fine once and then dead after going through Acronis True Image.  Another possibility is maybe there's some ID's or tattooing of the hard drive or specific partitions that was lost when Windows 8 put it's newer bootloader into the machine or lost from Acronis?  This is still the oem hdd that came with the computer, it has not been switched out.
    >> Question 2:  Are there any known problems with the official Windows 7 recovery DVD's for a late 2009 TM2 1079cl?  I'm also aware of the Cyberlink recovery software patch / pre-install disc and tried this with results that were no different to without it.  That said my machine does have the Cyberlink version of the recovery software, I read there's something like 3 different companies software for recovery depending on time period the laptop was made and sold.
    Reference: [ http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=pv-80183-1 ]
    >> Question 3:  Plainly put, what now?  Anything else to try or do I need to go find an RTM windows 7 disc and scrounge all the driver zips together?  (Very much hoping to avoid that, I'm actually pretty curious to really understand what happened here and while that'll work it would answer nothing.  hehe).
    Maybe related things as well:  Some searches led me to believe having the WLAN switch off at the start of recovery causes driver installation to flip out (and indeed win7 seems to drop dead during the last steps of driver install) however it's not possible it would seem to turn the WLAN card "on" before this point.  Switch won't bring it to enabled state anyways.   As I mentioned above the Cyberlink recovery software patch has no effect on things.   No parts have ever been changed in this machine, original hdd, wlan card, ram modules, ect.   I doubt the motherboard bios / firmware has ever been updated, machine states it's revision F.02.
    I have at my disposal:
    * A lot of time, actually, hense why I really want to know what happened and not use the Win7 RTM disc.
    * hdd image of HP recovery before Win8 touched the machine.
    * hdd image of recovery after Win8 and a kinda buggy but still bootable Win8-RP.
    * The correct HP-made recovery DVD's for my laptop, ordered recently (December 2012).
    * Confident enough to toy with partition editing tools should it be a suggestion, never really used much outside of gparted on linux live discs however.  Considering the current state of the machine there's nothing to risk losing anymore though.
    Sorry for the text wall!  I like being very detailed!

    I have the tm2 and have not experience an issue with the recovery and wifi being off, but it certainly is in the realm of possibility.  I just had not encountered it on my own tm2, so I subconsciously dismissed it or just didn't think of it as a result.

  • Unable to restore Windows recommended firewall settings

    I received an HP Support Assistant notification that my  Network firewall was off. I also saw that Norton internet security and antivirus protection had somehow disappared from my computer. (My service contract is still active and current) I used Norton's remove (though there was nothing there to remove) and reinstall program to restore the Norton program first, then went to Windows Firewall > Customize settings to turn the firewall back on. But when I click the "Use recommended settings" button,  I get the following error message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424 I also tried Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer, but get the following error message: There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in ...The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall serice on the computer that you are managing. Error code 0x6D9 I'm just a little bit computer-literate, but not enough to figure this one out. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Hi, If Norton is running correctly it will disable the Windows firewall and use its own.  There is no need to use the Windows firewall. You may have to go thru the Windows add/remove programs and again run the Norton Remove. Now try reinstalling Norton.

  • Unable to load Windows 7 on Satellite C850D

    I purchased this Satellite C850D in May this year and it had Win 8 pre-loaded. My son did not like it so I decided eventually to remove it and load Win 7. I took the hard drive out and formatted and repartioned the hard drive but when I have returned it and attempted to load Win 7 I get problems.
    Initially i could not get anything to work then v=changed the BIOS settings from UEFI to allow booting but now I continually get
    pxe-e61 error media test failure, check cable
    pxe-m0f exiting pxe rom
    reboot and select proper boot device
    I have removed the network capability with no luck as the hard drive is located in the BIOS settings and have attempted changing the boot order
    I have attempted to boot from USB, from CD/DVD and also loading direct to hard drive but nothing...and now told no operating system.
    Is there a workaround?
    Please help as i am getting to the point of throwing the laptop against the wall haha

    At the beginning I must say that I really hope you have created recovery media for original Win8 that you can use if you want to have factory settings again.

  • Need help restoring my Satellite M55-S1001 to "out-of-box" state...

    I want to restore my pc to it's original state just like when I first bought it.
    How do I do it?  Please help. It's a Satellite M55-S1001, thanks.

    If you have the factory restore disks, that is how you do it.  Put the first disk into your CD drive, shut down your computer completely, and then power back on.  I am not familiar with your model, but on many Toshiba computers you hold down the "C" key or "F12" to get the computer to boot from the CD instead of the HDD (there is usually a piece of paper in the disk pack with the instructions for that model.  Once started, just follow the on-screen instructions.  Depending on your system, it takes 20-30 minutes to reformat the HDD and reinstall Windows.
    The process will truly reset the PC to the factory state, meaning that ALL your software and ALL your personal files will be gone.  Forever.  Back them up before you start the restore!!!

  • Satellite P840 - Unable to restore system image of Win 8.1

    I have Toshiba P840 laptop which came with windows 8.0.
    I created DVD and USB backups
    After upgrade to windows 8.1 and saving images, I had a problem software and needed to go back to a previous back in windows 8.1.
    The restore from the external HDD fails due to driver incompatibilities.
    Technical support advise to restore windows 8.0 and then upgrade again to windows 8.1
    Is there a better way to restore windows 8.1 image?
    Is it possible to populate the boot usb (from windows 8 as original) to windows 8.1 drivers?
    I am unable to create boot usb with windows 8.1 as the hdd partition has windows 8.0
    Thanks,

    For the future I recommend you to create a system backup using the Windows own system backup and restore feature.
    Here some details provided by Microsoft:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
    It related to Win 8 as well as Win 8.1
    Of course for this step this isnt possible. So you would need to use Toshiba recovery medium to go back to Win 8, then to upgrade to Win 8.1
    After installation and update of all the Windows 8.1 drivers and tools, create the backup as mentioned on the MS page.

    Hello Jane and welcome in Toshiba forum
    After reading your posting I must say that best and easiest solution for you is to reinstall operating system using original Toshiba recovery DVD. This DVD contains operating system, all necessary drivers, Toshiba specific tools and utilities. After recovery image installation you will have out-of-box state and clean preinstalled OS.
    Yes, this should fix your problem. Please note: when you do this all saved data will be deleted.
    Do you have some important data saved on your notebook?
    If not use this disc reinstall Vista and everything should be ok again.

  • Satellite A200-17O - How to restore Windows to factory settings?

    Hi
    I have a Satellite A200-17O. I want to restore Windows Vista to factory settings, I do not need to back up any files. I do not have the Product Recovery CD. When I press F8 and click the "Repair Computer" option, it will give me all the options, but when I click the option to fully recover the system (the one on the bottom), it will simply open up a window telling me to back up my data, then theres an "OK" button, and when I click that, the window will simply close and go back to the options menu. All I want is to get Vista back to Factory settings.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello
    Yes, normally you can restore your notebook back to factory settings using the HDD recovery option. Therefore you should follow the instructions here:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
    If it doesnt work you have to use the Toshiba recovery disk. If your notebook didnt come with such a recovery disk you have to create it yourself using preinstalled recovery creator tool. This is mentioned in your user manual, have you checked it?
    Therefore you need some blank DVDs. I would recommend DVD-R from Verbatim or TDK. Many users here have good experience with these brands.
    If you have more questions, just post again! ;)

  • Unable to restore screen when laptop goes into power saving mode

    Toshiba Satellite M45 running MS Windows XP, When laptop goes into powersaving mode and screen goes black, if i do not move the mouse in a nanosecond I am unable to restore the screen. Try my ususal fix of pressing the now amber mechanical start button, but I only hear the computer start to whir, but the black screen continues.  I have to do a hard close and consequently loose all unsaved data. Then do a mechanical start and return to the desk top with a message that the computer programs where not closed properly.
    I have been told I need to change the power saving mode options. Is this correct? How do I do this?  Thanks,  Blooming

    I tired to do a system restore for two different dates and got a message that MS was unable to restore to that/those dates. - no explanation.
    Linda, sometimes the restore points get corrupted. The fix is to turn System Restore off and then on again. Unfortunately, that removes all the previous restore points.

  • Unable to restore and recover my Database from RMAN Backup

    Dear All,
    Iam practicing RMAN in Windows environment.
    My configurations are
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'F:\Backup\%F'; # default
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'E:\ORACLE\DATABASE\SNCFORCL.ORA';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'F:\Backup\%U.bak';
    Then i took the RMAN backup, now iam shutdown my DB and removed one logfile..
    then i tried to startup the DB but it is saying
    ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 3 of thread 1
    ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'E:\ORADATA\ORCL\REDO03.LOG'
    So i tried to restore the Database with my rman backup
    RMAN> restore database;
    But i am unable to restore my logfile in the Datafiles location where as all other datafiles are restored but redo logfiles are not restored.
    So, i am unable to recover my DB
    Please tell me whether i am doing any mistake, what is the solution for my problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Mahi

    All you restored was your datafiles.
    Now issue recover database and that will apply the archive logs.
    This is in the oracle documentation.
    "You must restore backups of these archived logs for recovery to proceed. You can restore either to the default or nondefault location. If you do not have backups, then you must performing incomplete recovery up to an SCN before the first missing redo log and open RESETLOGS."
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/osrecvry.htm
    In this case after issuing restore database in RMAN, then issue this.
    "Recover database"
    It will then be an incomplete recovery. They should have been multiplexed. Did you restore your controlfile with this backup? You may have to issue an "Alter database open resetlogs;"

  • Unable to Restore Database

    We are attempting to migrate from an older windows platform to a Windows 2008 platform. The old configuration had two disk drives, and Oracle Express was installed on E: - the new server, being virtual has been configured with only the C: drive.
    I've been reading up on RMAN, and have confirmed that the daily backup process on the old server does create an RMAN backup.
    I've installed (and several repeat uninstall/installs) a copy of Oracle Express 10g in the default location, accepting all defaults except for my password (which is irrelevant under RMAN).
    I've duplicated the directories, I've figured out how to restart the database so I don't have to reinstall, but I am unable to restore the application database. I'm not eager to use other utilities than RMAN, since learning RMAN has already taken up more time than is budgeted for this task.
    I receive varying error messages, depending on the techniques I try to use. Usually I receive this closing message:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of startup command at 12/14/2010 13:39:24
    RMAN-04014: startup failed: ORA-02778: Name given for the log directory is invalid
    The other message I receive is the following or a variation on the theme:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of restore command at mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss
    RMAN-06564: must use the TO clause when the instance is started with SPFILE
    The second message is a direct response to the following:
    rman target /
    startup force nomount;
    run
    {set controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to 'c:\backup\oracle\XE_%F';
    # use 'c:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\database\SPF2FILE_%F'
    RESTORE SPFILE FROM AUTOBACKUP;
    I have no clue how to specify correctly that the SP2FILE.ORA file is the backup of the control file (can provide the script to create the backup if you think it will help, which runs a series of logs to capture settings and then executes the backup.) The backup process was inherited and I cannot explain why the default RMAN process is not being used to create the backup. However, I've been unable to use the default RMAN output to restore on a different server, as well.
    Please help - this task is now very late, and I'm not even sure whether I'm asking the correct questions to solve the problem(s) I'm experiencing.

    I'm not sure what you mean by the instance 'status'. I install a fresh copy of Oracle Express 10g. Copy over the backup files for the database and logs, copy over the SPFILE..., and attempt to restore, with the errors reported above.
    When I install XE, the instance is up and running (as confirmed by the 'home page' of XE being displayed in the browser waiting for logon and password. When I start the process to restore, XE is no longer available (in some form of maintenance mode and unavailable to normal users).
    What do you mean 'using pfile/spfile'? How would I 'use'? (I did verify that if I take a 'backup' using the XE tools, I CAN restore on the same instance where I took the backup. Just not on a different, new instance of XE.)
    The article is quite interesting, but it seems to assume that I'm working in the same instance where the backup was taken. The instructions also seem to contradict the error messages I presented above.
    I don't have any autobackup settings on my brand new copy of XE, so the following command in the article does not seem meaningful to me. Clearly it makes sense to use both a TO and FROM. It seems that what I should be doing is using a 'FROM' where I have the 'TO'; what happens if I point to my backup copy of the SPFILE in the FROM clause instead of 'AUTOBACKUP'? The command string I provided in my original post may be trying to do that, but I can't tell from the source article (which I now have to go find...)
    "RMAN> RESTORE SPFILE TO '/tmp/spfileTEMP.ora' FROM AUTOBACKUP;"
    Additional question - "DBID"? In express, I do not see any value for DBID. I understand why it would be relevant in a more advanced implementation, with multiple databases being maintained under the same Oracle installation, but it's not clear to me what DBID identifies - the database's internal "primary key" value in a directory of databases, or some other implication.

  • Satellite M55 -The CD-rom got un-installed suddenly

    Hi all,
    I've got a Toshiba notebook - Satellite M55 5325 and been using it for couple of years and found it working quite good so far.
    Just few days ago, there was some problem with the CD-rom with the symptoms as follows:
    - I don't see the DVD/CD drive when opening My Computer
    - When I opened the Computer Management/ Device Manager I found a question mark under DVD/CD rom drives
    - After trying to uninstall the current drive for DVD/CD rom and let the computer re-install it automatically, I found a message reading: +Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)+
    I did try to search around for the drive online but found no results...
    Have some of you ever experienced this problem before and could you just help me out with it please?
