Unable to run software updater, why?

Hi,
Please please help.
I have installed the software updater on my laptop but when I try to run it get a message saying I need 256mb of memory and it the wizard closes. I have 34GB of free space on my laptop so I don't understand why this is happening. Any ideas would be grealty accepted.
Cheers
Emma

You need to get it (RAM) up. Increased. The only way to get more RAM memory is to buy a memory upgrade for your laptop.
If you have a friend, relative or colleague with a PC that has more RAM, you can try upgrading using that PC (if they'll let you).
Other than that, you can also find a Nokia service/repair center nearest to where you live, and go there with your phone and ask if they can do the firmware update while waiting (best to call first).

  • Unable to run Software Update

I have a Macbook Dualcore and have issues checking for software updates. When I run software updater I get the error message: "A networking error has occured: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again." It then suggests that I should run Network Diagnostics (which I do) but it finds that my internet is working quite well, indeed. In fact, I just tried to update my software as I sit here posting this, chatting with people on iChat, and it still tells me that I may have to check my internet connection. What should I do???

    Hi Kiwi,
Try dragging these files to the desktop, then reboot and see if it works...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
We have other things to try if it doesn't.

Please take a screenshot of the following:
Go to the Apple menu which appears in the upper left of the screen, then click About this Mac. Screenshot the window that pops up.
Also under the Apple menu, run Software Update. After it checks for updates, screenshot the window of available updates.

  • Ti G4 PB crashes when running Software Update

I just received a Titanium PowerBook G4 800Mhz used on eBay. Has 512MB ram, 100GB Hitachi 5400rpm hardrive insalled, airport card and came freshly formatted with 10.3 installed and a CD with system patches up to 10.3.9. I reformatted the hardrive and attempted to do a clean install of 10.4 Tiger and here are my issues:
    1. After installing 10.4, attempt software update, all current updates and 10.4.3 combo update, experience kernel panic in middle of update with grayed out screen and multi-language message “you need to restart your computer, hold down power button." Everytime I restart and run software update, same problem happens.
    2. Restart and go to Apple’s website and download 10.4.1 manually. Installs with no problem
    3. Download 10.4.2 from Apple’s site, experience kernel panic, have to hard restart.
    4. Download 10.4.3 via software update, computer freezes, but after a couple of hard restarts it installs somehow.
    5. With 10.4.3 installed, software update “quits unexpectedly” every time I try to run it.
    6. Boot off of Hardware Test CD, run tests, everything test okay
    7. Decided to install 10.3 Panther to see if problem is with 10.4
    8. Reformat and clean install 10.3
    9. Run software update and attempt to install all current updates up to 10.3.9, screen completely freezes during “expanding” portion of update window. Have to hard restart, same problem every time I run software update.
Well, I’m stumped. I’ve attempted everything I can think of and was up till 3am last night trying to figure this out. I’ve run Disk Warrior, reformatted and partitioned the hard drive multiple times in different ways, all with the same results. I just completely reformatted my old white iBook G3 and installed 10.4.3 with no problems, and that machine is older and not nearly as impressive as this Titanium, so it leads me to believe that there is an underlying hardware problem, or at least a firmware problem. Also, the fact that the previous owner sent the computer with 10.3 installed and a CD with individual patch updates makes me think he was aware of the problem with Software Update and wanted me to update using the CD. I don't know, I'm lost at this point. Could it be the replacement Hitachi hard drive? Bad memory? Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

    Ti PowerBook G4 800Mhz 15.2" w/DVI   Mac OS X (10.3)   512MB RAM (1slot), 100GB Hitachi 5200rpm internal drive

    Well...
It was just a bad RAM chip. The stock 512B chip in the lower slot must have been causing the kernel panics. I took it out and put a new 512MB chip in the upper slot and everything works great now. One thing though, the replacement 144pin PC133 chip I purchased wouldn't work in the lower slot, it fit fine although it wasn't as tall as the stock chip. Installed in the lower slot, the Ti Book would make three beep error sound and not start up. Can anyone tell me why it would work in the upper slot and not the lower? Your input is appreciated

  • When I download software updates why do they appear on the desktop (and in devices) and not get saved to the HD (I click install to HD but they don't go there)

Double-click the white Adobe Reader Icon to open a new windows.
Double-Click the "Adobe Reader X Installer.pkg" file inside.
If it has already been installed it will notify you and say that it has been installed already.
If you no longer have those files go here to get the latest version of Adobe Reader.
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Let me know how that all goes and if you have any hang ups.
ON TO THE NEXT POINT OF INTEREST
It sounds to me from researching the other white 'icon' you have that you are trying to install a copier by the brand of Rico Aficio.
    Possibly the Aficio 2090/2105.
If so the install CD/Driver download for that copier must have also wanted you to install Adobe Reader to view the User Guides/ Documentation included.
If you are trying to install said device then double click the white icon labeled Ricoh_Aficio...double click the installer file inside of that.
It should run a setup/install window like Adobe Reader did then go from there. If it has already been install also you can go to your System Preferences -> Printers to see if it installed correctly and is working properly.
You can get to system preferences by clicking the Apple icon very upper left on your screen and selecting it from the drop down.

  • Thaw computers over remote desktop to run software updates

I've got a network of computers running 10.5.6 and have Faronics Deep Freeze installed. Disabling deep freeze on every machine to run software updates, and then re-enabling it is a colossal pain.
What I want to do is create a workflow that I can send to all computers simultaneously through Remote Desktop that will first thaw the computer, then run software updates, and finally re-freeze the computer. I've never used Automator before, and I'm not really sure where to start. Can anyone give me some ideas?

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
OK, maybe I'm missing something basic but then why would I ever want to run Windows network in my office? The bugbear about Macs is that there is certain Windows software for which there is no good Mac equivalent. But you are telling me that as long as I have a couple of Windows boxes, I can run my Windows software on them through my Mac, even though the data files are stored on an separate box (an Xserve).
Now, for the $64 question -- is it possible to set up a network in such a way that I could use RDC on my PowerBook in, say, Chicago to run the software installed on the Windows box and in turn to open and manipulate the files stored on the Xserve in my office, halfway across the world in Abu Dhabi? Would this be a particularly difficult configuration?
    Thanks,
    DXB Law

  • Password now required to run Software Update

My user is set to standard.
In Leopard, I never needed a password to check for updates (only to install them).
With Snow Leopard I have to enter a password every time I check for an update. Is this normal behavior?
    Thanks!

Why don't you create another new account (created under Snow Leopard) that is standard ? See if it acts the same way as your current pre- Snow Leopard standard account. I assume you have access to an admin account (or know the person who does) and are using a standard account for some reason.
I just did it myself, and I do get the authentication request when I run Software Update. What I meant earlier is that if this was a change for Snow Leopard, it's one that is probably intentional because it makes sense (at least for the Software Update portion). I don't know what's going on with Virtual Box needing authentication; maybe the app writes files to portions of the system that now require admin level access, where it did not before with Leopard.

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update (Couldn't fix it)

    Hi there,
I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
    1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
    2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
    CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
    3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
    4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
    5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
    A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
    B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
    C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?
Apologies for writing so many questions but I'm really freaking out!
    Thank you.
    B.

    Hi BDAqua,
I did as you said and got a firewire backup drive (Seagate - FreeAgent Desk 500GB). I tried to make a carbon copy of HD but it seems that the copy had some problems. Below I report both the CCC and console logs:

  • Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
    Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.

I keep getting a Networking Error: when i run Software update. i have 10.5.8 and want to upgrade to at least 10.6 or later. i know the network is working perfectly.

Snow Leopard OS 10.6 is not available via Software Update, it is paid upgrade.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...

    Other countries...

After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard and iTunes
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • Unable to do Software update, access iTunes, use widgets on dash and upload

    *_Here is the problem:_*
    1. Unable to use Software Update. When I try I get: "+A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again+" This is despite being connected to the internet and getting most things done.
    2. Widgets which require data retrieval are not working. Notably weather and currency convertor.
    3. iTunes cannot connect to the store. Tells me to check my network (which, if I do, I am told is fine, thanks)
    4. Cannot view images (such as car rental vouchers) which are meant to display in email. In fact- the entire email disappeared before my eyes! But CAN, luckily, view on the server so I KNOW it is not just that the image is "spam" etc.
    5. First thing on this list which made me wary- I cannot upload to YouTube, it times out ("unknown error" but timing out is mentioned) and this is using Firefox 3.8.3.
    6. Safari will not load at all- it just keeps trying to load.
    7. Displaying pages is slower than usual and downloading Onyx took ages and displayed no data regarding the file size or length of download time.
    *_What I know:_*
    1. I didn't update the last two times I was prompted because I was too busy to have it shut down on me and restart, etc.
    2. I also had a go at trying to set up a web proxy and failed miserably. Though I actually changed the settings on another network to the one I am using I am so not network-literate that I fear that I have somehow done this to myself.
    *_What I have tried:_*
    1. safe starts, restarts,
    2. deleting the preferences pertaining to Software Update from the various locations,
    3. repaired permissions and-
    4. thought of (I cannot afford to lose the data and haven't the time to back up just now- as per usual, this comes at the WORST time as I am on standby to fly out of the country due to VERY heavy and sad family affairs and need access to the files on the computer even if I cannot fully use the internet- just too many people/GB Pounds riding on this) using Onyx to try to "fix" this.
I have read up on others getting similar issues but am not certain that everyone has ALL the symptoms I am seeing (and then they may not be busy trying all these things on the one day and may not KNOW it is affected as well!). And I have tried each and every cure offered to these people. No good.

When you are going to be connecting to different networks that require different settings--such as proxies--you must establish different Locations in your Network System Preferences. If you're going to be connecting at college, you may want to set up a location called "College" and set the proxy settings so you can use it there. Then, when you want to go online at school, go to System Preferences -> Network and change your location to College. Then when you get home, change your settings back to "Automatic" or whatever you've named your home location.
Your Mac doesn't differentiate between networks it's connected to in order to automatically apply different settings. It relies on you to do that through the Locations set-up.
Anyway, glad it's working for you, and thanks for the star!

  • How do you automatically run software update using ARD?

Is there a way to automate running software update and downloading all updates using ARD? My current option is to log into each machine and do it manually. (I am also using a OSX server 10.6 if that helps.)
    Thanks

Use the the Send UNIX Command option. There's a template in the Miscellaneous section to have the workstations download and install updates; run it as the root user in the Send Command as field so you don't have to worry about a user being logged into each workstation. You can set the command as a task to run on a schedule if you wish.
Since each workstation will download each update, it's most efficient if you can run a Software Update Server and point your workstations to that instead of directly to Apple. Then you don't have multiple downloads taking up your Internet bandwidth. If you have on a few workstations and/or a really big pipe to the Internet, that may not be a concern for you.
    Regards.

iPhoto just stopped working. It loads pictures, but then goes into rainbow wheel forever. Then I try to force quit it, and then the whole Mac hangs up (had to power cycle it to get it back). I am using OS 10.5.8, and when I run software update, it assures me I have up to date software. I have not added any photos since the last time I used it, probably less than a month ago. What gives?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
