Unable to scan to computer

When I test scan to network forlder, I get the error message: Your printer cannot write to the destination folder. Destination folder is set to read-only  or has wrong  permissions. The destination folder is public and has read/write permissions for everyone. Same problem when I try to save faxes to the computer.

Hi @JiffyFingers
Please right-click your network folder, select Properties, and then click the Security tab. Please make sure your folder's security feature is set to be shared across the network so that all users can scan to it.
This information and more can be found in the following document; Scan From the Control Panel (Including Scan to Email, to a PDF, and to a Network Folder) for HP Offi...
Please open the document above and click on "How to scan directly to a network folder (network connections only)". Use these instructions to verify you are completing the steps as recommended.

  • Unable to scan----no computer found

I have recently switched internet providers.  My wireless box is downstairs and I have a router-repeater between it and this computer (a Mac).  I've had no troubles with scanning until this change was made.  In trying to scan I see the message "no computer detected).  I've tried identifying the wireless router as both the original box and the repeater.  The wireless network test report says "No problems found.  Congratulations on the successful setup of your wireless printer"  The HP Network Configuration Page says the Netowrk Status is "Ready" and the Active Connection Type is "Wireless".  Yet every time I hit 'scan' the message comes up that no computer is detected!  I've tried switching the printer/scanner off and on again.  I've tried unplugging it.  Nothing has worked.  Help!!!
    This question was solved.

    Hi Sophia21,
I understand since you changed internet providers the printer won't scan. You have a wireless box downstairs and a router-repeater also. I can help you, but I will need some more information to assist you better.
Is the printer connected to the main routers network name?
In the mean time you can do the following steps:
Repair the Disk Permissions on the Mac:
    Close all applications.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, click Applications and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left.
Click Verify and then Repair Disk Permissions.
    Restart the computer.
    Reset the Printing System:
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
Click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences.
    Click Printers & Scanners.
Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left white side panel, then click Reset printing system.
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system.
Then click the + sign, then select the printer from the list and click on the Add button.
(make sure it shows the printer name beside Use, not the Airprint driver)
What operating system are you using? Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
What kind of router do you have?
What is the full name and product number of your printer? How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

  • Scanning to Computer, HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All in one Printer A909g

I am unable to scan to computer with Win 8.1 using my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless all in one Printer A909g.  I can scan to email.  The system says my drivers and software are up to date.  When trying to scan to computer all I get is a blank scan file with no scan number (Scan_Doc0054) as I used to with Vista.  In Vista I was able to drive the whole process from my computer.  When scanning to email now I have to drive it from my printer as opposed to the computer.
I restarted an old computer running Vista and the 'scan to computer' function is operational.  As far as I am aware there are no other functional problems with the printer.
Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi John046,
I am sorry to hear that did not work for you, I do have some more options for you to try:

  • HP 7515 won't Scan to Computer

i'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and an HP 7515 All in One.  When I originally setup the printer, whenever I rebooted the PC a window would pop-up asking to enable Scan to Computer. That no longer happens. When I attempt to Scan to Computer from the printer the message on the printer directs me to Enable Scan to Computer via the printer software when using wireless printing. Unfortunately the printer software does not provide that option to select. When I use the HP Printer and Scanner Doctor it repeatedly tells me to remove power from the printer, restore power and reboot the PC. That does not fix the problem. When I try downloading a new driver (7510 series as 7515 is not available) the HP software indicates I am not connected to the internet when in fact I am.

  • Unable to scan and communicate with scan function C6180 Vista Home Premium 64 bit Printing works

I have an all in one C6180 Photosmart connected by wireless network (infrastructure). Network consists of 2-laptops, 1-Desktop and the printer.  Everything works from HP solution Center on the Compaq laptop and the Dell desktop both running Windows XP. My newest laptop is a Dell studio XPS core2   2.4ghz running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I am unable to scan from the Dell Laptop using HP Solution Center nor can I scan from the printer buttons to the laptop. Solution Center opens I select "scan document" and immediately get an error message "unable to communicate with scanning device. Likewise with the copy function.  The laptop does recognize the printer though and I am able to print wirelessly.  All functions work when connected via USB so I believe the printer is fine.  I have been working with this problem since I bought the printer in 2007. I spent many hours reading hundreds of internet posts, talking by phone with HP and via e-mail support from HP.  I became frustrated and gave up for awhile but now I want to see if there are any new solutions that I don't know about. I downloaded full feature software and drivers for the 6180 from HP and performed various levels of uninstall (L1, L2, L3, L4). I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner, windows disk cleanup and manual registry deletions when allowed per HP. I have checked port settings, tried stopping HP functions is Services.Msc. The Digital monitor is currently running, however no scanner communication-computer to 6180 and no scanner communication 6180 to computer. I can print and fax from computer wirelessly. I have ran the HP diagnostic utility separately and it appears everything is fine, connection IPaddress etc. During install when prompted to run test it says the printer is connected to the network. I have tried to add a device to the network after install and get the message no wireless devices found. The scanner does not appear under Cameras and Scanners in control panel. Nor will it find the scanner when I try to add device. Firewalls and antivirus have been turned off. Still can't make it work. Suggestions please.

Sorry about your pain.  L3 uninstall is what I recommend.  Re-install from hp.com and this time, with the printer properly attached it should flow OK.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw scan to computer file

when we attempt to scan  we have three options on the printer
    1. Scan to usb drive
    2. Scan to Network folder
    3. Scan to e-mail
the only way we can scan is to choose #1. If we want to  attach a scan to an e mail or place it in a file the only way that seems to work is to put it on a usb drive then transfer it to a file on the computer or an e-mail
Choosing #2 or 3 results in:
"this feature requires the printer be connected to network"
we are connected to the CPU by a USB cable from a port on the back.  How do we just scan directly to the computer??

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!

The printer would have to be setup on the wireless or hardwired with a ethernet cable to the router for those other 2 features to work.

You can follow this document to scan from the computer software. Scan.
Here are some instructions for setting up the printer on the network if you decide to.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - "Scan to Computer" issue on Mac OSX 10.8 or 10.9

    Hi...
I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.
There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:
"Failed to open a session on the device"...
Scan to computer does not work...
Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
Unable to enable print to computer...
Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
    Etc.
However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).
The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:
The printer is visible on the network
The print function has been working fine
    The HP Scan function works
The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)
As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.
The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.
The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.
    Thanks,
    PNS

  • Scan to Computer problem HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909a) OSX 10.7.5

    Good afternoon,
First of all I appologize if this question already has been asked a thousand times, but I am unable to find a solution in the somewhat simular stories. But reading thru all off them, while English is not my native language, was beginning to wear me out.
My set up is as follows:
    - HP Officejet Pro 8500 all in one - A909a
    - 2 iMac running with 10.7.5
One can be selected using the "scan to computer" and the other can't. Both have identical systems, the only difference is the one that can not be found by the printer is the one that has done all the available updates.
So far I have done an "repair permissions", looking for additional updates and finally an uninstall of the software. I installed the programme HP_Installer_Officejet_Full_Group05_10.6.dmg (which I believe is the one that came with the printer) after which it all works again. So problem fix I know... but when checking for updates using the Apple update, there is an update waiting for me and when I run that one, that computer dissapears again from the "scan to computer sellection).
For now I am keeping the update sitting in the Apple Update and happily use all the functions, but I am curious (and a bit OCD with the fact there is an update hahaha), can I ever have my software up to date without having to loose that function? Or is there another update/fix I can try using the up to date software?
Thanks in advance for any response!

Welcome to the forums, I hope you are well
I noticed your post and have read it thoroughly. My first question to you is, what is the update that is waiting? I would like to know about the update before we continue.
Please let me know and I will gladly look into this some more for you!

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
(Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?
    If anyone can help, THANKS!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
