Unable to search network drives with OS X - short answer

This is here not as a question but rather to summarize some point on a very long thread >> https://discussions.apple.com/message/15677220#15677220
If you are facing the issue in this title
Keep these in mind.
1 - Make sure indexing is 'on' for the SMB volume:    sudo mdutil -i on (path-to-smb-volume).
2 - Since the index is stored locally on the client's local volume, the server MUST remount with exactly the same name each time or it can't pair up the server with the local index. This applies to any of the protocols that work with Mac; SMB, FTP, AFP etc. In other words, if the server name changes or if it is a localdrive whose name has changed since the last succeful spotlight index, a subsequent index won't pair up therefore you won't find things, this is expected so try to avoid changing the name of the drives or SMB server to prevent indexes from pairing up.
Hope this helps you avoid a long read on that thread above.

I always presumed the server created an index localy which connected users' spotlights picked up.
Makes a lot more sense that 20 client machines having to index one volume 20 times?
On a Mac OS X Server this is the case, the OS X Server not only runs a process to do the indexing on the server so clients can all search the same index, but also automatically modifies the ACLs on the share to allow the server process to be able to access all the directories in order to do its indexing and for clients to be able to access the indexes.
Unofrtunately no-other server platform currently has an equivalent server based Spotlight indexing tool (possible exceptions being ExtremeZ-IP and Helios from JPY). So this affects Windows Server and SAMBA in otherwords the vast majority of SMB servers.
The ideal solution for most would be for the SAMBA project to add a spotlight server component, I would think this would be reasonably straight forward for them to do, whether they would be interested is a different matter.

  • How do I search network drives with Snow Leopard?

I cannot find a way to search available network drives using either Spotlight or the Find command.  This is a simple action in Windoze.  How do I do it in Snow Leopard (10.6.8)?

I finally found a partial answer at:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1568
The rest of the story is that you have to change the back slashes in the Windows address to forward slashes in a Mac browser address field to get to the folder.  NOTE that the Finder's Go command is useless for such connections.

  • Link to Network Drive with Spaces

I need to create a link in SharePoint 2010 that points to a network drive with spaces in the title. SharePoint substitutes %20 for spaces, but I need the space character.
    For example:
    file:///\\company\foldername   works
file:///\\company\folder name   does not work, it becomes
    file:///\\company\folder%20name
Has anyone run into this issue before?

    Hi Andy,
20% represents space in url encoding and it is hardcoded. I don’t think it is better to remain space character in the link.

  • Using network drive with time machine.  IS IT POSSIBLE?

There are lots of discussion on using network drives with time machine. I have not been able to make them work. Could somebody tell me if this is possible

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Mac running Leopard.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .

  • Why can't I make my Segate expansion drive a network drive with my Airport extreme

Please explain in simple terms. I'm trying to make a media server and connect it to my PS3

I'm not clearly understanding what the issue is. You have your Seagate drive connected to Airport Extreme via USB? Do you have any computers that can connect to the network drive?

  • Finder Search brings no Result, when search network drives.

    Hello,
I am a big time user of search (or spotlight) on my Macintosh and I have been using for years and through all the updates. I loved the recent updates to spotlight and I was able to search not only my HD but also the network drives where all of our files are located on an Mac Server.
I am the IT person of this small graphic design firm and everyone in our office work on files that are located on a Mac Server. We only keep the applications on our own client computers.
Spotlight or (search) was function perfectly up to a few weeks ago but recently when I need to search something on our Signage A, Signage B, Signage C or Print A, Print B or Print C, drives where we keep our files. The search does not bring no result. This is a problem not only with my computer but there are a few computers in the office with the same problem.
My question is what can I do to resolve this problem and be able to search again on my network drives where I keep all the files we are working on. If this function is no longer available with spotlight or search box of the finder window. Is there another software we can use to search for files and folders on our server.
Since there are a few people working on the same files sometimes when the files are moved it makes it difficult for the next person to find them, in that kind of situation search was working wonderfully and I need for that to work again.
    Thanks,
    Omar Noorzay

  • Search network drive for large files

Our network drives are getting full. I used to be able to use Find File to find files larger than a certain size. I hit command-F for finding the file, have it set to search the volume I want for files with size greater than 80 MB, but when I hit return to start the search nothing happens--no spinning arrow showing that it's "thinking". I don't want to specify anything in the window with the magnifying glass, since I don't know file names. Any suggestions, or is this just something that you can't do with 10.4.8 (the version on my machine at work)?

Never mind. I found out that if I add specific folders I want to search inside, it works. It just doesn't want to search the volume.

  • Finder will not search network drive

I am connected to a network with my MacBook Air running Mountain Lion and when I attempt to search for a file on any of the network directories, Finder indicates it is searching, but no results are ever produced.
Sadly, today I started up an old Windows laptop, went into Explorer and within seconds was able to find the document.
Why won't Finder work on a network drive?

The folder is not indexed by Spotlight. Open the Spotlight preference pane and check the Privacy settings. If the folder, or a parent folder, isn't listed, add it to the list and then remove it to rebuild the index.

  • Using network drive with iPhoto and iMovie

I bought a QNAP TS 212 NAS Drive and have it successfully set up on my network. I can see the drive and access its content through finder on my iMac. It is even visible in iTunes and am able to play media stored in it. But am unable to view the attached NAS Drive in iPhoto or iMovie. How can I use this NAS drive for storage of pcitures and video using above softwares?

You would be able to store your original files on the NAS with your Library on the internal drive with Aperture.
Note that this means other devices accessing those files will see no edits, just the files as imported from camera.
also since you seem an expert on iPhoto, is there a way to change default storage set up. I want my pictures to be assorted and saved under "album names" rather than year, month and date.
No. If you use iPhoto then the files are never accessed via the Finder, but only through iPhoto. So, how they are stored on the HD is just back end management for iPhoto.
Is there a way to export all the pictures in various albums and have them arranged under separate folders with matching album names?
If you have the most recent iPhoto 11, then yes, it's an option in the export dialogue. If you don't then
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
I would caution you about both iPhoto and Aperture. Neither of these apps have any cross platform ability. Both use virtualisation for lossless processing. Simply, apps from other OSes will not make any sense of these apps. You would need to export everything from them to have edits available to other OSes.

  • Unable To See Network Drive from outside Home Network..even when using DynDNS

    Hi
I have just got a Freecom Media storage Network Center which I have attached to my WRT150N router.
I am attemting to permit access to authorised users to files on the drive via the internet (presumably via ftp).
Here is what I have done:
Swiitched on DynDNS on the web admin page in the router (used DynDNS.com free service.
Obtained a user addess which is middle-earth.dyndns-home.com from DynDNS, which is linked to my Virgin Media IP
Switched on Port Range forwarding with
    Ports 20-21 as ftp
    Port 80 as http
    Port 57 as DNS
    Selected "both protocols"
Set the IP address to route to 192.168.1.42 - (this is the IP address which the web based software for the Network Drive reports as.
However the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol in PC attached by LAN cable to the router is "Obtain an IP address automatically" (i.e. dynamic?).  If I change these settings and specify static IP addresses   will I not muck up internet connection to Virgin Media.
what I was hoping to acheive was typing     ftp:// middle-earth.dyndns-home.com
in the address bar would let me see the network drive from anywhere!
I have tried using DNS pinging on Ports 20, and 21 but that tells my ports are closed.  i have also tried switching off my software firewall (Kaspersky) and the router firewall, but this does nothing.
What have I done wrong or no done!!
    Thanks

I think the problem is solved.
The Freecom device needs to use a different part of its interface to be assigned a static IP address, which I have now done.  At my last try it was visible from two independent views outside of my network.
On another front, I am appalled at Linksys or Cisco, who are not prepared to advice on getting more from their produicts if they are 'out of warranty'.  The online chat tech said I could ring an 0871 premium line number in the UK.  When I rang that, I was told as tthat as my unit is not faulty and was out of warranty I would have to use their pay per incident  service.
That is not a way to deal with customers.  When it comes to upgrading or replacing network equipment, I will look to a provider who is interested in their customers.

  • Excel 2007 and 2010 slow to save to network drive with Windows 7

I know this issue has been passed around and I know that there are some fixes out there. I will lay out my issue and resources, what I've tried and the things I've noticed.
I have a mix of Server 2003 32bit, 64 bit and 2008 64 bit. The desktop/laptop environment is mainly XP (no issues saving with an XP machine), a few Win 7 computers and a dozen thin clients running off the 2008 TS. The slow saving issue happens with either
a Win 7 machine or a client terminal served into 2008. It takes 60 seconds or more to save or "save as" an excel file to a network drive. Same thing happens with any Office product. No issue saving to the local machine. If you log into either 7 or
TS with the domain admin account, the saving takes no time at all. Only as a domain user does it hang.
I have tried the SMB2 trick, the 981711 hotfix, turning off indexing and starting the webclient service. I am probably forgetting a trick or two that I've seen online from various people having the same issue. Point is though, the issue remains and besides
being utterly annoying, it is preventing me from rolling Windows 7 out to my employees. Please Help. Thank you in advance for any advice posted

    Hi,
Have you tried to create a new txt file with notepad to test this issue? If this issue also happens on .txt file, you should check your network.
And I suggest all users disable their anti-virus to see if the problem goes away.
There are other things to try if the problem is evident in all of the documents you open. When EXCEL is not running, make sure you delete all the temporary files that
EXCEL may have left lying around various folders in your system. Look for files that end with the TMP extension, or files that being with the tilde (~) character. If your file folders become very cluttered with these temporary files, it can slow EXCEL down
    immensely.
Another thing to try is to start EXCEL with the
/a switch on the command line. This causes it to load without also loading different startup files such as add-ins and macros. If this fixes the problem, then you can bet that the slowdown is caused by one of those add-ins or macros.
You might also rename the Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm) file; if it is corrupted then it can slow down response times. (Renaming the file causes Word to create a clean,
fresh, empty one the next time you start the program.)

  • Windows Server R2 stop working. Cannot map network drive with my Win 7 client.

    Hi to everyone.
I had a problem for quite some time time and even i tried to solved it till now unfortunately seems unreachable.
I have a 2008 R2 server which is used as SQL 2005 server. My application program shared from the server. My win 7 client  use a map network drive to access my share folder from my windows server. Suddenly my clients lost my connection. Since then i
cannot connect to the folder and i got the message
    Windows cannot access \\Server\Storage
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.
Details: Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.
I check out my share permissions, all seems ok. I also check out firewall, services, TCP/IP, share folders, really almost everything but still nothing.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve the problem.

Yes what seems to happened is due to virus infections.
This problem started 2 weeks a go. First i had network connection error with my client. Them my application had respond errors. Finally i lost my network drive.
I realize that the problem was due to virus. My old antivirus program doesn't s scan any threats so i uninstalled it, and i installed Panta antivirus and i clean up my server and my clients from virus. I am sure that both are clean from virus. My antivirus
program runs every day with no traces of infections.
Since then i cannot see my share folders on my server side and i cannot map network drive.
One thing that i want to avoid is re-installation of windows server 2008 R2.
    Can anyone help about this
    Thanks

  • Home Hub 3 - problems using network drive with OS ...

    Hi ,
I have recently switched back to BT and received the HH3 , all wifi connectivity is good . However , I am having problems connecting to the external hard drive I have plugged into it . We have to macbook pros in the household one running Leopard and mine which unfortunately ( it seems ) is running Lion.
The MBP running leopard can see and connect to the network drive (1tb Seagate Expansion Drive FAT32)perfectly. However I am having problems doing the same via Lion . The HH3 is visible in Finder under shared and the usb_disk folder is visible , however when I click on it to access the external hard drive I am presented with this error :
As I said the MBP running Leopard has no issues and connects perfectly :
I have checked the HH3 which is running the latest firmware and checked to see if there was any firmware update to the Seagate , which the isn't !!
ANY advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Ah! that might be the problem, something residual, I did have a machine dual boot W7 and Ubuntu, now it just runs Unbuntu, but I decided to do a clean install.
I dont think the macs have a problem with HH3, yes I picked that post about dual booting, interesting cos the obvious thing to do would be apply different static ip addresses to each O/S, that way the Hub sees them as static addresses for 2 machines, rather than setting them as dynamic by selecting always use the same ip address.
Anyway there's a recent post on here regarding printers and Lion which got resolved, but again I looked at that from a windows pint of view.
I've googled a couple of links which you have probably already found, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213886?start=0&tstart=0 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213886?start=0&tstart=0 the second one I know relates to ntfs external drives, but what I'm looking at is the solution using sudo mount and the various switches used.
But you may just have to bite the bullet and do a clean install.

After trying to use Disk Warrior for maintanance last week my entire hard drive crashed.
I've spent the last week rebuilding only to encounter a new problem..i can not open the hard drive with a double click.
I attempted to run Disk utility to diagnose the problem and was told that the "program had lost connection and was unable to verify/repair disk permissions...and was told to shut down disk utility, which i ran from the install disk...
Any suggestions aside from erasing and rebuilding the hard drive?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Im using a network drive with time machine and im getting error 45. Time machine will not work now. Why?

I bought a seagate goflex home 2TB network drive. It worked with time machine for a couple of weeks than now it wont. It just says ERROR 45 now and will not back up. Why?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
According to several related Time Machine Error 45 threads in these forums, Time Machine is not well suited to backups on most non-Apple network drives.
