Unable to set up dual band with my 1st Gen Airport Extreme

Not sure if my 1st Gen Airport extreme supports this but I unable to figure out how to setup dual band networking.  I have certain devices that work on 2.4 Ghz and some that work on 5ghz.  I trying to improve my network speed by separating the devices that can use 5ghz.  Any advise please?

1st Gen AirPort Extreme will do either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz....but not both simultaneously.
Simultaneous dual band was introduced in the 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme.
Simplest solution.....the current AirPort Express will do simultaneous dual band. You could then reconfigure the AirPort Extreme to extend the 2.4 GHz network for increased coverage.
Be careful with 5 GHz as this is pretty much a "same room" or "line-of-sight" deal since 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals....they won't penetrate through walls or other obstructions nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals.

  • Dual band with Time Capsule extending AirPort Express - is it possible?

    Hi all!
I have an Early 2009 Time Capsule and an Early 2010 AirPort Express.
Currently the AirPort Express is downstairs where the broadband connection enters the house, broadcasting at 5Ghz Wireless N only. Extending it is the TC upstairs which broadcasts the signal as Wireless B/G/N 2.4ghz and Wireless N 5 Ghz. This is because the TC has greater range so if it is in the middle of the house it will reach pretty much everywhere, or so I thought.
I would like to put the TC back in two network mode (2.4 and 5 ghz) because my macbook keeps switching to the 2.4ghz network, decreasing latency and throughput even more. Is there a way to have the AirPort Express channel the 100mb internet to the TC but still have the TC broadcasting in dual network mode so as to reach the whole house with maximum throughput? And would it be possible to have the AirPort Express also broadcast at 2.4ghz G to use my iPod touch and older laptop there? Currently its broadcasting at 5ghz because otherwise the TC extends the 2.4ghz which makes the whole setup much slower.
    Thanks in advance,

Unfortunately, this is not possible. The AirPort Express can only broadcast a single band at one time, not dual bands. If you have the TC setup to "extend a wireless network", the TC will only extend the signal that it receives, which is a single band signal from the AirPort Express.
And would it be possible to have the AirPort Express also broadcast at 2.4ghz G to use my iPod touch and older laptop there?
As we pointed out, the AirPort Express is a single band device. It can broadcast a 2.4 GHz signal or a 5 GHz signal, +but not both simultaneously+. So, if the Express is broadcasting 5 GHz, it cannot also broadcast 2.4 GHz at the same time.
To do what you want, you need an simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme in place of the AirPort Express. The Extreme will broadcast both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously, and if your TC is a simultaneous dual band device, it will extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 Hz bands.

  • Planned firmware update for previous dual band 2.4/5 'N' Airport Extreme ??

Hi, I purchased a Airport Extreme dual band 'n' router about 2 months ago. Now that the new generation has been released, is there a planned firmware upgrade available to previous generation users to move from the 'n' draft to the finalized 'n' specs? Also, is there any major changes from the n draft to the finalized n that improves performance, stability, etc...
Just curious want options, if any, people like me have?
Lastly, any chance I can bring in my APExtreme into the Apple store to get an upgraded antenna installed??

Now that the new generation has been released, is there a planned firmware upgrade available to previous generation users to move from the 'n' draft to the finalized 'n' specs?
Apple normally does not announce any firmware updates, so it would be pure speculation as to if and when they would provide one specifically for the finalized "n" spec.
Lastly, any chance I can bring in my APExtreme into the Apple store to get an upgraded antenna installed??
Since Apple has never (to my knowledge) offered an internal antenna upgrade for any of their wireless products, I don't think this would ever become an option. My guess is if it did, it would not be cost effective for you to go this route.

  • Dual Band with PPPoE

I am having some network issues in my house and I would love to be able to set up a dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) network so that I can get the best speed for my Macs while still being able to use my iPhone, etc. at home. At my disposal: one 802.11n AEBS (2007 model, not dual band), one Time Capsule (2008 model, not dual band), and one 802.11n Airport Express (2008 model, not dual band). I had tried setting up a dual band network following Apple's instructions in Designing Airport Networks pdf but the kicker seems to be that I have PPPoE DSL and cannot put the unit into bridge mode with this setting. Two questions:
    1. With my current hardware, is there a way to set up a dual band network?
    2. Do the new AEBS/TC allow dual band mode when connected to a DSL modem using PPPoE?
Sorry, I am sure this is answered already elsewhere; I couldn't find the exact answer.
    Any help is appreciate

    1. With my current hardware, is there a way to set up a dual band network?
Yes. You have several options to choose from with the available equipment:
Note: ">" represents an Ethernet connection
    1) Modem > Time Capsule (TC) > 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    2) Modem > TC > 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn)
    3) Modem > AEBSn > TC
    4) Modem > AEBSn > AXn
    2. Do the new AEBS/TC allow dual band mode when connected to a DSL modem using PPPoE?
Yes. Only the device directly connected to the modem is required to be configured for PPPoE. All other routers should be configured as bridges.
You also have several variations of connecting base stations wirelessly as well.

  • WVC80N software "unable to set up remote viewing" with TZO

I've researched this all night and I'm now begging for help.
I've got the camera all set up and I can view it while on the local network.  The problem comes in when I try to sign up for the 90-day free TZO trial that comes with the camera to try to get remote viewing on my iPhone.  I progress through the Linksys setup software (as is detailed here: http://www.tzo.com/MainPageSupport/HowToPage/LinksysHomeMonitoringNCameraTutorial.html) and between steps 7 and 8, I get a screen that says "Unable to set up remote viewing" with my network, click this link to learn how to remotely view your camera.  The link takes me to a page on the TZO site that says "Oops, there was an unknown error with setting up you camern for remote access" and nothing else.  It seems to die on the "Configuring Internet Server" step.
Within the camera's setup page, there's a link to the TZO website that tells me that because I have a WVC80N, I have to use the setup CD to set up the 90-day free trial, which fails as described above.
I've set the camera to have a fixed IP of 192.168.1.200
I've set the Alternative Web Access Port to 1024
In Port Range Forwarding in the router, I've set 1024 to 1024 to forward to 192.168.1.200 (not sure exactly what this does)
    The router is a WRT160N
    Any ideas?

Have you tried getting in touch with TZO and set the DDNS up the old fashioned way?  I also know that TZO has a beta going on of a new IP camera application for remote viewing and this may also help.  Not sure why the setup is failing though, but oook is probably right, something wacky with the router, IP or ISP that the setup software just doesn't like.

  • Have Pixus and 3rd gen Airport extreme. Unable to replace with 5th gen airport extreme

I have Pixus and a 3rd generation Airport extreme . Unable to replace with 5th generation airport extreme. Problem?

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I assume that Pixus has provided you with a modem that provided an Ethernet connection to your 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then anytime you change networking hardware, it is a good idea to completely recycle power on all of the networking components.
    Please try the following:
Power-down the Pixus modem, AEBSn, and computer(s); leave them powered off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it sufficient time to initialize.
Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: It may continue to flash amber. This is ok, as it may just require some additional configuration settings, like wireless security to attend to.)
    Power-up the computer(s).
Network clients connected to the AEBSn, either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the Pixus modem. Please post back your results.

  • Will an old Airport Express work with a 4th generation AirPort Extreme?

My Airport Express model A1084 will not seem to work with my 4th generation AirPort Extreme.
I've tried everything I could think of to get it to work.
I am able to set it up(Extend existing network) with a copy of Snow Leopard but although it has a green light and seems to be working, I can't pick up a signal on any of my devices. Everything on iStumbler looks ok to me except the channel on the Airport express is 3 and the Extreme is 149. The Express is on the 2.4 ghz and the Extreme is 5ghz. What should I look for on iStumbler that might give me a clue?
    Thanks,
    Mot

The A1084 does not have a setting to "extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used for that purpose with the newer AirPort Extreme.
The A1084 Express can "join" the wireless network provided by the AirPort Extreme, and be used for AirPlay and to run a remote USB printer, but the Express does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it joins a wireless network.
You need the new A1392 version of the Express or the previous version, the A1264 if you want the Express to "extend" a wireless network wirelessly.
The older A1084 Express could be used to provide more wireless coverage if you can permanently connect the Express to the Extreme with a wired Ethernet cable connection.

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

  • I have just changed my network provided and now i can't find my 1st gen airport express with airport utilities

Hi, can anyone help. I've just updated my network with a new hub and now i cant find my 1st gen Airport express with the curreent Aiport utilities.

From your description, it sounds like the AirPort Express was configured to connect to your "old" router or hub...and, to do that,  the Express remembered the specific ID of that device as part of the connection credentials.
The Express is likely still looking for the "old" device for which it still has the settings to connect.
Since you changed to a new hub or router, the Express has no idea how to connect to this new device.
If this is the case......then the solution will be to reset the Express back to factory default settings....and then configure it again to connect to your "new" hub.

  • Why doesn't Nike+ work with the 1st Gen Ipod touch with 2.1 software?

Why doesn't Nike+ work with the 1st Gen Ipod Touch with 2.1 software?

The second gen iPod Touch has firmware version 2.1.1(5F138) whereas the 1st Gen only allows 2.1 (5F137). Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it's likely.
Why doesn't Apple allow those with the Nike+iPod sports kit to use their external sensor on the 1st Gen iPod Touch?!?! I can't see why the sensor would be incompatible with the right firmware upgrade!!

  • Is the Time Capsule wi-fi router compatible with the Nest thermostat? I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?

I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?
If so, i already have a wi-fi router, so can the Time Capsule simply be used for wireless backup instead of as a router if there is conflict?

A TC is fundamentally a AE with a sata chip included to drive the hard disk. Some slightly different bios to include disk functions, although most of those are also on the AE. So as a router it is 99.999% identical.
And yes, if you have another router you can easily bridge the TC and use wireless for backups and internet connection. Once you no longer route through the TC the issues with most NAT problems including port forwarding should disappear.. mostly this is due to all apple routers using NAT-PMP instead of upnp which is the near universal standard for opening ports.. without upnp apple keep their routers more exclusive.

I can connect to internet with my MBP through Airport Extreme, but my iOS devices can't. Please help.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

  • Problems with spotty cable modem connection when connected to 3rd gen Airport Extreme

    Hi All, here's my problem:
I've got a 3rd gen airport extreme (AEBS) that I've been using for the last several years and had no issue. Recently, I decided to switch from Verizon DSL to Time Warner Cable, and in order to avoid extra fees, I decided to purchase my own cable modem. Here begins an epic battle with sanity...
    - 1st modem Motorolla SB6141: This was the first modem that I bought and it worked like a charm... at first. The first week was like a dream come true, with incredibly fast speeds and very low latency (ping=15ms, dl=30Mbps, ul=5Mbps). The AEBS and the modem got along great, no issues until all the sudden the connection speeds started dropping off. The connection would never fully drop to zero, but close. The bandwidth would hover around 1Mb down, which was about a 1/30 of the speed I was supposed to be getting. I chalked it up to a bad model so I headed back to Best Buy.
    - 2nd modem Zoom 5341J: This modem istalled with little issue and worked pretty well. The only problem I encountered with this modem was that it seems to cause a ton of network latency (ping=200ms average), which was way too slow for me. On the first night that I had this modem working, I cycled the power (to try to resolve the latency issue) and it never came back on. there must have been a short in the board or something. Back to Best Buy.
-3rd modem Netgear CMD31T: This modem was an absolute nightmare to get connected to the AEBS. The process involved following a VERY specific order of operations that involved powering down the modem and the AEBS, doing a factory reset on the AEBS, poweing down the AEBS, powering on the modem, plugging the modem into the AEBS, and powering on the AEBS. None of the other modems gave me that much trouble, but when I eventually got it working it was FAST. I was getting the best latency and bandwidth out of all of the modems. Unfortunately, that lasted about 5 minutes, when the bandwidth dropped to 1Mbps and never recovered.
I know what you all are thinking... the problem must be with the AEBS. But here's the kicker, I have an Airport Express that I tested with all three modems and got the same results. Well then (you must be thinking), the problem is obviously with the ISP! But when I connected all three modems directly to my MacBook Pro, they all worked fine, with no connectivity issues. The only time I encounter a problem is when I involve an Apple router. I love my AEBS and my Airport Express, so I'm avoiding buying a different brand router. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Well after doing some research, I've figured out that the problem I was encountering had nothing to do with the Airport Extreme or the cable modem! Apparently, my problem was caused my uplink saturation. In other words, my cloud backup service (BackBlaze) was using up all of my upload bandwidth, which meant that ACK packets (acknowledgments) weren't even getting through. This would basically cause any server I was downloading from to stop sending additional packets, making it appear that connection to the internet had been severed. My simple fix was to cap the bandwidth of my BackBlaze backups to about half of my total upload bandwidth. One thing I did learn is that the this issue is usually fixed by using a router with QOS (Quality of Service) capabilities to prioritize ACK packets. Unfortunately, for some reason Apple has neglected to add this feature to even their high end routers.
