Unable to set up wireless connection

I have installed the wireless router WRT54GS.  I have my PC wired into the router - works great.  However, I can't get my 2 wireless laptops (one PC and One MAC) to sense the network.  In the past, each would pick up the signal without entering IP addresses and using their installation CDs.  What am I doing wrong?  I purchased this to use with our Xbox Live which also does not sense the network.  Thanks for any assistance you can give.

Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non-linksys name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box- Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>Now Click on the Sub tab under wireless > "Wireless Security" Change the Wireless security mode from disable to WEP or WPA >>Click on "Save Settings" ..... On the wireless computer try to connect to the Home network .... check the connection status after few seconds ... If shows connected try going online ...

  • [SOLVED] Unable to set up wireless connection (wiki read)

Well, as you can see that's my 1st post. That's why I want, at first, congratulate the community for the amazing wiki and forums. It helped so much.
But I'm writing here because I have a problem that I'm unable to resolve with the wiki: The wireless connection. It doesn't work.
Now I will post my hardware and some software:
    ASUS Eeepc 1000
01:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT2860 (as # lspci | grep -i net says)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Gigabit or Faster Ethernet (rev b0) (as # lspci | grep -i net says)
Linux Kernel 3.2.4-1-ARCH (as # uname -r says)
    I3 window manager
    wireless_tools and wpa_supplicant installed
(If you want to know something more, ask me)
The wireless is enabled in the BIOS and the led indicator is on.
Being the network controller RT2860, must I do something special? I tried to blacklist what the wiki says with no results.
I have no problems with wired connection, but I can't set up my wireless connection with the # ip link set wlan0 up command (and yes, I execute this command as su or with sudo). I3 corroborates it in the status bar: W: down.
    # ip link list
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    ( I had it disconnected when I did this check)2: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:22:15:08:af:e2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:15:af:ba:39:b8 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
I tried a lot of thing, but no results at all. Must I configure manually some file like wpa_supplicant.conf, rc.conf or others? It is normal that in rc.conf, NETWORKING tab, the only interface is  eth0 (interface=eth0) with no other references to wlan0?
    Thanks for your attention.

That thing on the wiki about blacklisting is probably outdated, it's from the times the kernel had two Ralink drivers. Now there's only one, and you should not blacklist anything.
rc.conf is only for wired interfaces. For wireless you can do stuff manually, or use a manager - netcfg, wicd, networkmanager.
And that's that. For further help, you'll have to provide details about which commands you used and what their output is.

No wireless connection option when i set up my apple tv even though wireless is working at home. No option under settings to set up wireless connection. Does it mean wireless is broken?

What do you see under settings?
Do you have a network setup?
    1. Network Configuration
Have your network password (if you use one) and your Apple Remote handy to configure your Apple TV. Make sure there are no obstructions between the remote and Apple TV. Read more about using and troubleshooting the Apple Remote.
    If you:
Use a wired Ethernet network to connect, Apple TV automatically detects your network.
Use a wireless network to connect, Apple TV helps you select and configure your network connection.
    Connecting to Your Wireless Network
Apple TV will help you connect to your wireless network. If you use a password to access your network, have it ready. Use the Apple Remote to:
Select your network from the list, or enter your network name if the network is hidden.
Enter your password (if you have one).

  • Can't set up wireless connection for HP C4385 All-In-One with Windows 7.

    Hi guys,
I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. I already had an HP C4385 All-In-One that I was using with my last computer. I have also just set up a new wireless network because I got a new cable provider. So basically I needed to do everything from the beginning.
When I inserted the setup CD and ran the setup program, it said I couldn't continue because my OS was not supported. I went to the HP website and found the solution, which was to plug the printer in via USB and let Windows Update find the latest driver. Ok, that's fine, the printer works now when the USB cord is plugged in.
To set up the wireless connection, the instruction manual says I need to do it through the network setup wizard p on the CD. But that brings me back to my original problem-- the setup CD won't work because it doesn't recognise Windows 7.
So my question is-- how can I update the network settings (SSID and key) on the printer without the network setup wizard?
Thanks for any help, this is really driving me crazy!

  • Set up wireless connection on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

How do I set up my wireless connection on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2?

Follow the installation/setup instructions with your modem/router. Since there is no Mac compatible software with most of those, you can simply check their instructions and enter things manually on the router's webpage - usually something like 192.168.x.x. You need to set up the modem and/or router first before you can try to connect your devices (which should then be pretty automatic or you can check in Network Preferences).
Or are you talking about something else?

  • Setting up wireless connection to time capsule

Does anyone know how to fix this? I am replacing my airport extreme with a Time Capsule. The lan connection works fine with our laptop, but not the iMac. When you say "the wireless connection is not recognized", do you mean that you can't see the network under the AirPort menu bar item?

  • Unable to set-up sybase connection pool for wls6.1

    Hi All,
I am trying to set-up sybase connection pool in wls6.1 using the supplied jConnect driver (don't know the version of the driver). In diff places I am seeing diff opinions about the settings. It is really frustrating because BEA doc shies away from documenting just the sybase details although it provides details about Oracle, informix and SQL Server.
I just want to know these

set the Url to be: jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:port:SID
    set username
    set password
add oracle.jdbc.drivers.OracleDriver into the JVM options -Djdbc.drivers
    restart the server

  • Unable To Establish A Wireless Connection

    Hi,
Currently, I am unable to connect to my Linksys router wirelessly. If I plug my computer directly into the router everything works fine but for some reason I can't connect to it any other way.
I've tried reseting the router's setting, deleting the network and trying to set it up again. I've even played around with the EasyLink advisor. All to no avail.
I am using Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron 1505 Laptop. I am trying to connect to the Linksys WRT54G router.
Message Edited by TheZach on 01-31-2008 03:07 PM

In attempt to solve the problem, I ran the Windows "Diagnose the Problem" feature, when the computer failed to connect to the wireless network again.
It said, "This network is marked as 'hidden' and is either not in range or the wireless settings saved on this computer do not match the settings of the network.
The router is sitting roughly 4 feet away from my computer, so I doubt it's out of range. I haven't messed with any of the wireless settings lately either.
    What should I do?

  • How to set up wireless connection

I just got the Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, I've never used a Mac before and am foreign to the interface. I have a D-Link router. How do I go about setting it up? I'm not computer savvy at all.
I know you go to System Preferences - Network, but then what?
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    jaynew,
Hello Jay, and welcome to the Discussions!!
There shouldn't be much you need to do. First, we need to know a few things about your router. Is the wireless network password-protected (encrypted)? Does the router broadcast the SSID?
Any "open" wireless routers should be recognized by "Airport" (which is what Apple calls standard 802.11x wireless networking), and you will be asked if you want to join whatever networks are found. While Airport will "see" any password-protected networks that are broadcasting an SSID (basically, the name of the network), and it will show them in a list that appears in the "Airport menu" at the top of your display, it won't automatically ask you if you would like to join.
Out of the box, all Macs should be pre-configured to go online via a wireless network automatically. You can turn Airport on and off, from the menu I mentioned above, but it should be on by default. Double-check that it is: In your "Menu Bar," at the top of the display, look for a triangle with a curved top and concentric lines. This is your "Airport menu." Open it, and make sure that it reads "Turn Airport Off." Otherwise, it will read "Turn Airport On." You want it to be on
Assuming your wireless network is secured (password-protected), you'll need to select it from that same menu, then choose the correct encryption protocol, then enter the correct password. Provided you get all this right, you will join your network and gain a connection to the internet. Alternating lines on the Airport menu icon will turn black to show the signal strength. Also, you will be asked if you would like to store the authentication credentials for this network in your Keychain. You do!
If you still have trouble at this point, you might need to have a look at System Preferences>Network. First, use the "Show:" pull-down menu to select "Network Port Configurations." You will see a list of potential network ports, among them "Airport," "Ethernet," Firewire," etc. If you want Airport to be your main mode of internet connection, drag it to the top, and make sure it has a check next to it (make sure that it is enabled). Your Mac will look for internet connections in the order outlined in this list.
Next, change the "Show:" menu to select "Airport." In this window, click the "Airport" tab. The "By default, join:" menu should read "Automatic." Now click the "TCP/IP" tab. The "Configure IPv4:" menu should read "Using DHCP." You shouldn't need to bother with the other tabs.
That just about covers most any situation. If it does not cover yours, give us some more info, and we'll try to respond.

  • On windows xp i cant find my netgear router or set a wireless connection up

when i go onto windows i cant get onto the internet. I have a wireless netgear router that works with mac os x but i cant set it up for the windows

Hello Tommy B 21. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Per chance is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) in a different room than your wireless Netgear router?
If so, it is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing the AX from getting a good clean signal from the Netgear to stay connected.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    o NetStumbler
    o WiFi Hopper
    o WiFi Owl

  • Moved; New cable provider, unable to set up wireless network

Hi all - this has me completely baffled. Comcast set up our cable modem today in our new house, but the technician was unable to establish a connection through my airport extreme.
I am able to establish an internet connection via ethernet cable directly to my mini mac. However, when I connect the same ethernet cable to the airport extreme WAN, then another from the ae to my mini mac, no connection. Green light but no access to the internet.
    I have tried:
    - two different ethernet cables (one brand new)
    - hard reset of airport extreme
    - turning off (alternately), mini mac, cable modem, airport, then restarting
    - manually setting ISP, subnet and router info
    - using airport admin utility to set airport extreme back to default then trying again
    - even tried connecting ethernet cable to my macbook, still no connection
Is it something obvious that I'm missing? Help!

    Welcome to the discussions!
Try resetting the modem again. Look for a reset button on the modem and press it for a second if you see one. Then immediately pull the power on the modem. If it appears that there is a battery that is easily accessible, pull the battery as well from the modem.
Let the modem rest for 20-25 minutes. Some modems take longer to reset (but the ISP will never admit this) Power off the rest of the network as well.
Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme.
Start the modem first and let it run for 3-4 minutes by itself. Then start the AirPort Extreme and let it run a few minutes, then start your computers.
See if that helps. If still no luck, you may need to take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple store to have it checked out for proper operation.

  • TX restarts when trying to set up wireless connection

I am trying to set up my husband's new palm TX so that it can connect to our home wireless network.  We have both Mac OS X and Windows Vista. The Palm is hotsync'ed to the Mac.
Every time we get to the point where we either try to connect via bluetooth or wifi, and it starts to initialize connection, the Palm restarts.
Any ideas what in the heck is going on?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I will give that a go again and see if I can make it work.  This is our second TX in a row that has had issues right away. The other had screen issues, and this one is working fine except for the wifi/bluetooth.

  • Unable to set up wireless network between macbook pro and Pixma MX860 printer/scanner

I am about ready to throw everything out the window. I have followed the advice given in an archived discussion on this forum, but I always get hung up just a few steps from the end when I don't get the window I'm supposed to get.
Supposedly, I'm to link the computer and printer initially with the USB cable, configure it, and then it's supposed to work WITHOUT the USB cable.
I've configured the printer in my MacBook Pro, but I'm supposed to "highlight the access point" (presumably my router) in the IJ printer window, and it isn't there.
I've tried running a LAN cable from my printer to my router. That doesn't work, either.
I'm running Snow Leopard (still a bit afraid of Lion).

I'm not familiar with your printer but from what you have said, can I ask the following questions:
Have you actually been able to print using a cable from from Mac Book Pro to your printer, or is this a new setup?
From my own experience with routers/computers/printers you normally have to pair the router to your printer/computer if connecting wirelessly, this involves pressing one or more buttons on the back of the router, then type in the very long security (WEP) keys printed on the bottom of the router.
Apologies if you're not presented with the same problems as I did, but at least it's a start!
Pairing of laptop computers and printers using wifi using the router is sometimes overlooked - look for the WEP keys/access codes and buttons on the back or underside of the router, write down the numbers and letters, and check out whether any buttons on the router need to be pressed!!!

  • Trying to set up wireless connection for deskjet 7580

I have used HP Wizards to uninstall and reinstall printer software. Then I used a Wizard to help with wireless setup, but at this point, the Wizard is telling me to use the Setup buttons on the front of my printer. However, the option I'm given on my Setup screen on the printer are not the options that the Wizard thinks I have. So now I'm stuck. The printer worked fine as a wired printer to my PC, but I've never been able to network it.
I have a Dell desktop with Windows 7.
    Any ideas?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Hello and thank you for your update!
I understand your printer is currently connected USB, and you have no room to hook up a Ethernet cord directly to your router.
Unfortunately, the printer you currently own, to achieve wireless capabilities, you have to hook up a Ethernet cable to your router. If you look directly on your printer, in the Setup Menu, usually newer models can connect directly to their router (without a Ethernet cable) by accessing the Wireless Setup Wizard. If you had the Wireless setup Wizard on your printer, you could type in your WPA password and the Network Name from your router.
Also, even the full feature software will ask you to connect your Ethernet cable to achieve wireless.
I will provide an HP document on Installing the Printer Software on a Wired (Ethernet) Network.
If you have any further questions please let me know.
