Unable to share files and printers

I have a new iMac and an older PC running Vista. I have turned on the correct network settings (I forget the exact name). But I am unable to see the workgroup or any other computers on the network. The windows computer is the same unable to see my network as well.
I am new to Mac OS but can learn quickly. Please help me and any questions you have for me please ask
Oh. The printer I am trying to connect is a Epson Stylus CX7400

I have a similar problem : I cannot 'see' my Mac from my PC or my PC from my Mac. There are no machines visible in the Network window.
I did have a problem connecting to the two wireless printers on the network, but following advice on the HP site, I 'solved' that by replacing the modem / router.
On my small home wireless network, the Mac is Ethernetted into the router and the PC (running Vista) is connected by wireless. Both machines can see the Internet, and both share the wireless printers successfully.
I followed some advice on the "Problems connecting to a network" thread, and somewhat mysteriously a machine called "PowerMac-000A959989FE" appeared in the network window. However, no connection can be made even though this appears to be the Mac on my network as it has the same HW UID!
Any ideas / suggestion most welcome.

  • Windows 7 computers asking for network password to access shared files and printers on Windows XP PRO computer.

I have a network of 10 computers configured as peer-to-peer work group. I have upgraded one of the ten from Windows XP PRO to Windows 7 PRO. The other nine computers are all running XP PRO. AS near as I can tell they are all configured the same. I have the
same user and same passwords on all computers. One of XP computers is used as a print server. The Windows 7 computer initially was able to access shared files and printers on all XP machines with out requesting a network password.
Suddenly, the Win 7 computer began requesting a network password to access the shared files and printers on the XP print server. It will not accept any of the user names or passwords (all administrators on both machines with identical names and passwords.)
The Win 7 computer has no problem accessing the shared files on the other XP machines. It can even access shared printers in a different work group. Apparently something has changed but I'm at my wits end trying to figure what changed on either the Windows
7 machine or the print server XP machine.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.
Disable simple file sharing on the Windows XP computer:
How to disable simple file sharing and how to set
permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
    2.
On the Windows 7 computer, go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the
    following items are turned ON:
    Network Discovery
    File and printer sharing
    And this one is OFF:
    Password protected sharing
    3.
Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the computers and check if it works.
    In addition,
I would like to share the following with you for your reference:
    Troubleshoot file and printer
    sharing
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Unable to share files with other Macs after lion Upgrade

I am unable to share files other macs on my home network.
I receive an error message that the server will not allow additional users to log on.
I can connect to windows machines and can use mac screen sharing.

I have multiple machines with Lion installed (Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Mac Mini & a late 2010 iMac) and several more runing Snow Leopard. I cannot make AFP connections to any Lion machine from any other machine, Lion or not. At the same time I can make Screen Sharing connections and several other types of connection to the Lion machines, and can make any type of connection (including AFP) from the Lion machines to the Snow Leopard machines.
After I enter my password, attempted AFP connections to Lion invariably draw the "This file server will not allow any additional users to log on" alert.
Yet the target Lion machine shows "Number of users connected 0". I don't know how to find the crash log, but no AFPFileServer process appears in the Activity Monitor's All Processes list on the 2 Lion machines I checked, so this might be the problem. I've tried repairing the file system & permissions, to no avail.
=> Spettinger's workaround - switching AFP off and SMB on - does indeed allow me to make file sharing connections to my Lion machines. Thanks spettinger!
But, how can this be? There is nothing unusual about my configuration: its all recent Apple hardware & system software, with no 3rd-party protocols & no hacking. Why doesn't everyone who shares files have this exact problem?

  • Unable to share files with Windows

I have followed the instructions on my iMac to a "T", but am unable to share files with the wireless laptop on my network. The ethernet-wired pc can see the iMac fine and does not have to use a password to view the shared files. I must be doing something wrong with passwords - can someone please help? Thanks!

    G'day v3ofushere,
You may need to provide a little more information so that we can assist you!
What version of Windows are you running on the other machines?  XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1?  EDIT: Scratch that - I just saw that it is a Windows 7 PC from the subject!!! (DOH!).
Are your Windows computers on a domain, or are they running as a WORKGROUP?
When you say that you can't connect to the network, does this mean that you are having trouble connecting to file shares?
What are you seeing when you attempt to connect?  Any error messages?  Or is it simply failing to accept the login credentials and shaking the dialog box at you?
    Cheers,

  • How can I share files and itunes through extreme base station ??

How can I share files and itunes music through the extreme base station. as well as locate and place files onto the external hard drive that is connected to the X.B.S. from my or other computers hooked up to it ??
thank you in advance for your attention on this matter.
    - BrooklyNYC

Which AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) are you discussing? The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS supports the direct connection of USB hard drives. The previous round 802.11b/g AEBS does not have that capability. I have a feeling that you are asking about the new one but this is the discussion area for the old one.
The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS allows you to share files directly from the connected USB drive. It doesn't matter what the files are so you can store your iTunes library there and get access wirelessly.
The round 802.11b/g AEBS doesn't have this ability.

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!

I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to share files and folders between users of a same mac

    Hello,
I would like to share a folder among users of the same Mac. I have a folder called toto, containing files and folders and i would like to share toto with other users of my mac. I would like the other users to be able to read and write every file contained in the shared folder toto.
    Is it possible ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Franck

Yes, that works for items that are already there, but would have to keep being repeated for newly-created items.
Actually, using chmod -R 777 <folder> raises a Unix question for me that perhaps a more knowledgeable person here can answer for both of us.
Setting the  "x" bit on an enclosed folder would make it "searchable", which is what you want here, while setting the "x" bit on an enclosed file would make it "executable", which would not be intended.   It's  my understanding that if you use chmod -R 777 you will set the "x" bit on all enclosed items, including the files, while using, say, chmod -R a+rwX would only set the x bit on enclosed folders, not the enclosed files. My question for someone here is, should you therefore never use chmod -R 777 on an enclosing folder and instead always  use something like chmod -R a+rwX?  Does it make any difference in practice whether or not your datafiles are inadvertently made "executable?"

  • Unable to share files through Linksys WRT54G Router

I installed WRT54g as a access point on current network. I can get to internet from computers wired up to access point, but I can't do any file sharing between them. They are both Windows XP Professional SP2 with different computer names and the same workgroup name. When I go under My Nework Places and click on View Workgroup Computers, a dialog box pops up saying, "<Workgroup Name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." It's just a simple home network that I'm trying to build and I have my user accounts on both computers are administrators. How can I be able to share files? Any help is appreciated

make sure that the computers are able to ping each other....disable the firewalls and follow this link for file and printer sharing

  • Unable to share files between two macs

I'm trying to setup my iMac and my wife's iMac to share files through an Airport Extreme base station. I turned file sharing on on both computers and I can now see my wife's computer in the sidebar of the finder window. It says "Not connected' in the top part of the window. When I click on the "Connect As.." button, I'm asked for a username and password. I tried my own username and password, I tried my wife's username and password but nothing works. Everywhere I look for instructions, there is no mention of passwords, even in Apple's own "Mac 101: File Sharing" (#HT1549).
    Any help would be appreciated!

I think I figured out the solution. I created a sharing account on my computer and added this account to the "Users" list in the Sharing Preferences pane. Now my wife can have access to my computer by entering the username and password for this new account. I don't know if this the right way to do it, but it works.

  • Unable to share files when in a IM convo with multiple people Lync 2013

    Hello,
I'm in the middle of a migration from lync server 2010 to lync server 2013. The users I have migrated over to lync 2013 are not able to send/share attachments when in a convo with multiple people.
However, users can send/share files when IM'ing with individual people.
I've been researching this issue for quite some time but still having a problem pinpointing  the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Did the issue also happen between users who still in Lync server 2010 pool?
Did the issue happen internal or external?
Please double check if MCU on Lync 2013 FE server works well, when two participants are connected, the session is essentially peer-to-peer. When three or more participants are connected, the Sharing feature depends on the Front End Server Multi Point Control
Unit (MCU) to provide the sharing stream to all parties.

  • Unable to share files in windows 7 to my apple tv

is there settings that i need to change in windows 7 so i can share pictures and stuff with my apple tv? sharing works with my wife's macbook notebook, but not with my pc. i have 2 notebook pcs running windows 7. i have turned on home sharing and i am running itunes version 10.0.68.
i have turned off and rebooted the computer and apple tv in various orders and still does not solve the problem.

I had this same issue for a very long time. I tried everything including cycling power on the cable modem, wireless router, Apple TV2, Windows 7 machine and nothing would work. I poked holes in the firewall for both UDP and TCP at the required ports. The only thing that worked for me was to change the wireless router to use B/G Mixed and not to use B/G/N. I don't know if this was just my issue, or something else, but it worked for me.

  • I am unable to share files satisfactorily over my home network between Mac and Windows

    Please advise.
I have an iMac with a LaCie Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Windows 7 laptop connected via ethernet network to a Belkin router with a WD MyBook Live Duo attached to it via USB.   The iMac also has a virtual PC in it using VMWare.
I have never been able to get file sharing to work satisfactorily across the network.
From the iMac, which is now running Yosemite, I can access the laptop and the external hard drive fine, but connections to the WD network drive are very slow and unreliable.
From the laptop, I can access the iMac and the WD network drive OK but while the LaCie share formatted for windows is visible, I am unable to open the individual files.
I was advised that I need a server.  I have therefore bought and installed OS X Server on my Mac but I don't understand it and have absolutely no idea what to do to make it work.  I open the LaCie share for example and cannot change anything - I get the message " 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is turned on for the volume containing the Share Point.  All permissions will be ignored.  This can be turned off in the 'Get info' window in the Finder."  Except it can't, because there is no such option in that window.
I can find no help  anywhere for this.  Please tell me how I set my network up so that files can be shared freely across it.

    Poor show Apple
Apple personnel aren't here.  We're all just users like yourself and apparently there's no one here who's seen your post and can offer a solution.

  • TS2756 Unable to share file in between Macbook air and iPod or iPhone 4S

Tried sending file via bluetooth from Macbookair 11" to iPhone 4S and alsomto the iPod, but it just doesnt work.
The devices pair but I get the message, "this devise does not have the necessary services"
What are these services and where to obtain / activate them?
Is it a Mac OS problem or the iOS problem?
    J.

"Tried sending file via bluetooth from Macbookair 11" to iPhone 4S and alsomto the iPod, but it just doesnt work."
Correct.  This has never been a feature of iphone/ipad/ipod touch.
"What are these services and where to obtain / activate them?"
    You don't.
This has never been a feature of iphone/ipad/ipod touch.
Iphone supports bluetooth for handsfree tellephone devices, stereo speakers/headphones, come keyboards, some peer-to-peer apps from the app store, and internet tethering where provided by the carrier.
Other than these it will not connect to a phone/computer device.
File transfer has never been a feature.
    Sorry
