Unable to shutdown

I got a new Mac Pro 2008 (had it for 3 weeks now) BUT it won't shut down for love nor money! if you shutdown from the apple menu everything quits as normal, then it just does nowt and the dock is still available. You can't even restart or log out. But if I set up a scheduled shutdown it does it without question. I'm having to do hard shutdowns.
I don't have any external devices attached apart from the ACD. It is set up to start up in the morning and back up to the network server, but obviously if I do a hard shutdown it won't start up to be backed up - which is a problem. One of the tech guys where we get all our Apple stuff says it's because I'm running CS2 and not CS3?!?!?!
I have reset the SMC and PRAM, which didn't seem to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Or even know if the CS2 CS3 thing is true? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I've got a similar problem with a brand new 8-core. I'll shut the machine down and then come back to hear the fans reving up full speed.
Definitely seems to be something going on with the new 8-core machines. It almost seems like a firmware update is in order.

  • Unable to shutdown/restart

Using a Flat Panel iMac with 10.4.11 installed (can't install Leopard) and now am unable to Shut down or restart. Desktop clears, dock goes away but the background image stays, and the unit never shuts down. The pointer is movable during all this.
On another Topic list someone suggested deleting Bezelservices.plist from Prefs for the same issue. Tried that, didn't help.
After the unit is hard shut down and restarted, the startup takes a long time but eventually comes up and the OS seems to work OK. I've tried repairing permissions, using DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. Still can't shut down. The problem persists regardless of the account I am in (admin or other).
    Any ideas?
    Rob

    Try this.
Do a Find/Search using "loginwindow". The following files should appear:
    com.apple.loginwindowlist.plist
    loginwindowlist.plist
Trash the com.apple.loginwindowlist.plist file(s) (there may be more than one file with this name) & Shutdown using the Power button. Then startup & see if Shutdown or Restart works.

  • Unable to shutdown or restart after update from 10.5 to 10.6

    Hi,
    I'm getting nuts with this.
After upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 I'm unable to restart or shutdown.
The system hangs on a blue screen with a spinning wheel. I did an
update, not a clean install (that would be a horror trip with a re-
install AND reconfiguration of 50+ apps and is not really a solution :-().
I've read, that this problem occurs not very often but I'm not the
only one, who has it. Via internet searches I tried a lot but - nope.
I'm trying to find out, what causes the problem but nothing helped
    me out of this trap.
    I tried the following:
    - PRAM reset
    - System Management Controller (SMC) reset
    - disabled all StartUp Items
    - relocated the following folders to another location:
    /Library/Preferences
    /Users/myaccount/Library/Preferences
    - did all maintenance procedures with Cocktail (Snow Leopard Edition)
    - cleared all caches
    - ran scripts: daily, weekly, monthly etc.
    - took off all peripherals (USB, FireWire)
    - removed third party Extensions out of /System/Library/Extensions
    No success.

    Hi Barney,
thanks a lot for your answer.
No - the above console log was with Parallels installed. But that
makes no difference. I did an uninstall and the problem still occurs.

  • Unable to shutdown DB - Only ABORT works

    Hi,
I just cloned a DB onto a Solaris 5 box with Oracle 7.3.4 from an AIX.
There were only a few transactions done by 1 user which probably had some sorting ; which used the temp tablespace probably.
When I tried to shutdown the DB - It wont ; I waited for 3 hours and tried an ABORT / Startup / Shutdown immediate. Still hangs for a long time. 2 hours and waiting.
Alert Log shows -- Waiting for smon to disable tx recovery.
I increased the "nice" priority for SMON thinking maybe it may help; but cant see any diff as of now.
I am thinking of leaving it for another few more hours to see if it would shutdown "immediate".
I read a few metalink notes : 1076161.6 / 61997.1 ; but the fet$ count sticks at a value and doesnt increase ( as per the document )
If this doesn't shut down in another 6 hours, will a constant "shu abort" cause any issues to the data ? I cant leave it for more than this time for it to shutdown gracefully.
    Any Advice please ?
    Thank you.

Abort for the shutdown won't create as such any severe issue(s) for the db with the only impact that the next time, database would be requiring recovery to be done and this can take from no time to very significant time even , depending on the number of transactions happened in the last life of the database. Before doing an abort, if you really have to do so, issue an "alter system checkpoint" . This would ensure that the buffers from the cache is flushed to the datafile and on next startup, number of buffers requiring recovery should be less.
That said, a quick search over Google, gave this thread for the same error. Check it out and hope it helps.

  • Windows HPC - unable to shutdown nodes from Node Manager

I have a small Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster that we purchased and asked for it to be a "Turn Key and Go" type deal, so we didn't configure it. The annoyance I am having is that I can't reboot or shutdown the compute nodes from the Node Management
window of the Head node. So when I need to do that, I have to remote desktop into each one (which for some reason take about 5 minutes from the head node,) and shut them down like that.
Does any one have ideas on where to start? I checked, all the firewalls have allowed File Sharing, which I saw some where needed to be on in order to do this.
When I ran "Shutdown-HpcNode" from HPCPowerShell, it gave me an error about bad username or password, so I think it might have some configuration problem.
(this was the first Windows HPC the vender had ever done, so their configuration settings might not have been perfect, but on the whole, this is a small problem to have.)
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Based on your description, this issue seems to be more related to Windows HPC Server 2008 R2. I suggest that
you should post this question in
Windows HPC Server Forum. I believe we will get a better assistance there.
There are some additional TechNet articles. These may be helpful.

  • Unable to shutdown SQL Server

    Hello,
    I'm facing an issue with a SQL Server 2008 SP3 CU17 setup on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
I've got 4 instances running on this server. A bunch of users make some queries with SSMS (I know it's not really advised...) and from time to time, the instance becomes unavailable.
If I try to restart the instance, it shuts down and never restarts. When looking task manager, I still can see the process of the instance I've just tried to restart, and I'm not able to kill this process.
The only solution remaining is a reboot of the server. But the reboot hangs until a BSOD involving a broadcom faulty driver.
On The advice of Dell Support, I've updated every drivers and firmware but the issue is still there.
The event viewer also show a message about registry file still in use involving sqlservr.exe.
Disk check on the host does not show any hardware issue.
Everything was working fine until one day, when a user came and told me he cannot access the instance anymore. No updates were applied just before the issue appeared.
SQL data are stored on a SAN and when I don't start SQL, reboot of the server goes just fine.
    Does anyone has an advice?
    Thanks,
    Steph

    Hi Olaf, Tom, Santosh
I've registered the SPN with setspn.exe but it did not help with the issue.
When the instance "stops", I'm not able to login anymore. I need to check for swapping, as CPU is not a 100%.
The instances are hosted on a physical server, Dell R610.

  • Unable to shutdown Instance in Sun Application Server EE 8.1

    Hi,
When I try to restart the instance I get the below error message:
Operation 'stopServerInstance' failed in 'servers' Config Mbean.
Target exception message: com.sun.enterprise.admin.servermgmt.InstanceException: Failed to stop server instance name01_instance.
    CLI137 Command stop-instance failed.
I then have to go and shut down nodeagent & domain and see if there are any outstanding process running and kill it manually.
After I do this then it all comes back up fine.
Any ideas why this happens ? It used to work the first few times and it started giving this problem.

To better understand the issue, appreciate if you can provide the snap shot of logs corresponding to node agent and server instance.
A thread dump for the server instance's JVM would help a lot. Pl. let us know if you need help on getting the thread dump.

  • Today I tried to shutdown my computer and a window popped up saying that my computer could not shut down because the mail application was open, it wouldn't close, so I used a key combination to force mail to quit and now I can't log in. Help?

Okay, so I have been having trouble with my mail application all week. The window refused to open and would not quit. Today, I tried to shut down my mac and a pop up window told me that I was unable to shutdown because mail was open. After using a key combination, I successfully was able to quit mail with force quit. Then I was able to shut down with out a problem. However, upon rebooting, my computer refused to let me loggin. I put in my password correctly but then the rainbow pinwheel showed up and stalled for a minute and then my screen flashed and the gray screen reappeared, expecting a password. I tried turning it off and back on again with no luck. I also reset my password after reading a similar discussion, but I still can't log in. How can I fix this?

I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button.  I've tried, I think, almost all suggestions on this forum (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc).  I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.
It was suggested I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints.  Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them.  I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).  Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.  I am about to give up...  I would like not to have to re-install the system software..  Thanks for any help!

Uninstall whatever McAfee product has been installed according to its instructions. There is insufficient reason to conclude it is causing any particular behavior but McAfee "anti-virus" products serve no beneficial purpose on a Mac and can only complicate troubleshooting.
Seagate's disk utilities are also unnecessary and have the potential to contribute to problems.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Yosemite Won't Shutdown With External Monitor Connected

    Hi there...
I have a MBP 2010 and I've updated Yosemite from Mavericks. Now I'm running the latest 10.10.2.
Ever since I updated to Yosemite, I have had this problem of my computer won't shutdown when an External monitor is connected. This happens only when I put my computer to sleep. However, if I restart the computer and after logged in to the user and tried to shutdown, it shutdown without any problem. Every time I shutdown it just hangs and I had to force shutdown by press and hold the power button. Which I'm sure is not a proper way.
Right now only my external monitor connected to my MBP. So I did unplugged the ext. monitor and tried shutdown and it works fine. But it think this is the temporary solution that I've found but it is annoying to unplug everytime I wanted to shutdown and plug it back in once the computer is up and running. Which is not idle solution at all.
Am I the only one or a lot of people facing this issue? If there is a solution please share. Very much appreciated. Thanks.

Updated to 10.10.3 and the problem still persist. Still unable to shutdown or restart after wake up from sleep.
Any one affected? Is it something to do with Gfx card?
