Unable to sort songs on iPad or iPod in iTunes

I used to be able to sort songs on my iPod using the column browser in iTunes; I recently got an iPad and noticed that the column browser option was greyed out. I puzzled over this for a bit but didn't mind since I don't listen to music from the iPad. However, I noticed a few days ago that the column browser is no longer available for music on my iPod either.
I know that to get the column browser option one must click on the "songs" tab near the top of the itunes window - but I don't have that table. The whole line with "Songs/Albums/Artists/Genres/Radio/Match" is gone. It's available for music on my computer, in my itunes library - but not for anything on the iPod or iPad.
I'm using an iPod classic, so I've got a huge amount of music there - not being able to sort using the column browser is a huge pain the boot!
Any tips?

I had all my music stored on my laptop but was running out of space so I transferred it all to an external hard drive. That's when everything went pear shaped! Tried to sync it all but messed it up. Now I have all songs on iPad, but it won't sync new stuff to iPod plus there is only new songs ( recently purchased ) on iTunes. Would love to know how to sync up iPad to iPod and iTunes so it all matches. Have tried the iTunes info icon but still can't get it to sync. Has anybody had problems with external hard drives when it comes to syncing iTunes?

If your library is full of broken links then try fixing them with my FindTracks script, otherwise see this post by forum regular Zevoneer for options on transferring files from the iPad to your computer.
Alternatively, if your iTunes database is missing files that should be in it then perhaps there is a previous iTunes library file kicking around your internal drive somewhere that could be restored and reconnected to your media. It all depends on exactly what you did to start with. Switching to a new database tends to get things confused as iTunes will want to wipe the device and start over.

I cannot update the song information on my iPod in iTunes.

I got an iPod Touch 4g about a year ago. Last month the iPod all the sudden stopped working. I took it into the store twice and the second time they simply replaced it with a new one. Since then I have been having two problems:
1) The operating system has been running extremely slowly. I brought it into the store today and they suggested reinstall the OS and that this should fix the issue with it. I can't really ***** that problem right now.
2) I for some reason cannot update the song information on the iPod directly in iTunes. If I change the name of the song or the album or genre in Itunes that is actually on the iPod, it'll show up as changed in Itunes but on the iPod itself it hasn't changed. On my old one, whenever a change was made it would often say, "One moment while library updates." It doesn't do this on my replacement.
In order to change information for the songs, I need to delete the copy off my iPod, update the information on the computer copy and then retransfer it over. Is there some setting I need to change in order for the changes to take place. I would like to avoid going back to the store a fourth time.

1) Powering off nd then back on the iPOd tends to fix the lag problem for a while
2) The problem with updating music is a known problem with iOS 5 and as you found out, you have to delete/unsync the music form the iPod and then resync.

Ipod Nano skipping songs... IPod or ITunes issue?

I purchased an IPod Nano and signed up for ITunes. I purchased a CD from ITunes and synced it with my IPod. That worked fine except for one huge issue - the IPod skips right over 5 out of the 12 songs on the CD! The songs play fine through my computer (Windows XP Pro SP2), just not on the IPod.
Is this an IPod issue or an ITunes issue? Has anyone dealt with this before?

Managing and ipad and ipod on itunes?

I'll be hopefully getting an ipad mini soon, and its been awhile since I've used itunes for apps. My last (and only) apple product is my old 2nd gen ipod touch.
I have all my apps for the ipod on itunes, but I want to download new apps just for my ipad. I want to keep the apps seperate on my itunes, is there a way to do this, like having two folders, one for my previously downloaded ipod apps, and one for my new ipad app? (Or something similar).

Can't see the songs listed on the IPOD in Itunes

I cannot click on the IPOD administrator when connected to Itunes and get the song listing on the IPOD shuffle. All I get is the IPOD shuffle settings screen (showing Software version 1.0.4, capacity, serial # etc)- no listing of the songs, This is a recent problem - in the last 2 weeks. I have downloaded latest IPOD and ITUNES software and it does not fix the problem.

Not dumb... It's actually a bit confusing with the latest version of iTunes, and it only affects 1st and 2nd gen shuffle users.
Before, it was Settings and Content. And they clearly looked like separate "tab" choices. iTunes 11 changed the wording to Settings and On This iPod, and it's harder to see the separation as "button" choices. So, it looks like it says, "Settings on this iPod." On other iPods, it starts with Summary (not Settings) there are more button choices there (not just two), so it's not as confusing that the last one is On This iPod.

I just uploaded songs to my boyfriends ipod and on itunes it says all the songs are on there but when you look on the actual ipod, it says its empty, but I just read that all I have to do is delete my itunes 7 and download that itunes 7.5 and by library will still be there right?? Does this really work??? And I will still have all of my songs, let me know THANKS!

Unable to delete songs out of my IPOD

I am hoping someone can figure this out.
I downloaded some podcasts awhile back and now that I've listened I want to delete them out of my Ipod. When I connect to Itunes I am unable to even see/find these podcasts. It is as if they do not exist. When I disconnect again, I can find them in various places in my Ipod so they are still in there.
There must be some way to delete them but I am at a loss trying to figure it out since I can't even see them when I connect to Itunes. I am already set to manually manage my data, I have tried to search for them, I have deleted playlists where they may have been and none of this has gotten rid of them. Maybe I did something wrong when dragging these into my Ipod after initially downloading them. I am hoping I don't have to be stuck with them wasting the memory forever since there are quite a few.
Hopefully someone can help & figure out what I can do to get rid of them.

yes itunes 7...
previously it was on the podcast section... but somehow either it was deleted or something, i can't find them in the podcast section... not in music, movies etc.... the only place i could find them is in my smart playlist... I can't delete these podcast from smart playlist...
So what i did is, i have to go to my Library in my PC hard drive and manually delete these files... then go back to the smart playlist and see or try to make these files to have exclamation point in front of them... then sync my ipod and then these files would be deleted from my ipod... after syncing, I could see that the free storage of my ipod increase... because the podcasts have been deleted...
I lost about 1gb because of this... I didn't even know that these podcasts were in my ipod... I found out about this by accident, I made a smart playlist and suddenly I saw some very old video podcasts in the playlist... can't be found anywhere, only in the smart playlist... Even until now the file name is still in the playlist, but since i delete the actual files from my HDD, it has the exclamation point !!! in front of them, I just cant delete these... it's just weird...

The latest and greatest version of iTunes is not a favorite of mine.
How can I make the songs on my iTouch sort?
In all previous versions I could just click on the column headder and that would sort the list, know I can click on the headers and nothing happens. My songs are currently sorted by genre and I would like alphabetic.
When viewing the songs in my Library I can sort by any column in the display so it has to be something with the way the new iTunes is setup.

The music player will automatically sort the music files according to the information in the file name and the ID3 tags. There is an ID3 tag reserved for the track number, and usually this information has been filled in to keep the album in the order intended by the artist - and I have yet to see an album where all the tracks are in alphabetical order.
If you want to make tracks appear in alphabetical order, we would advise you to go through the ID3 tags and remove this information along with the possible track number in the file name. Tags can easily be edited in most music players and other dedicated applications. Please see here for more info on ID3 tags.

Why is sorting "song" order different on iPod than in iTunes?

I have a podcast of the Economist and have created a smart playlist in order to allow the podcasts to show up in my playlists and to disappear from my iPod after listening to them and then syncing.
However, the ordering of the playlist on my iPod does not match the ordering in iTunes. Why is this? Also, when I look at the playlist in iTunes under the iPod in the Devices area it does not show any episodes in the playlist.
This seems like a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Can someone point me to a forum somewhere where I can get help with this? I'm obviously posting to the wrong place. Thanks!

Unable to copy songs to iPad Library

Hi,
Ok this is very strange.
I have 5 mp3 exactly the same format, no doubt. When I drag them to the Library, just 2 of them is copied, the 3 others aren't.
When I try just one to see what is going on, upon drop, there's absolutely nothing, no message and it's not copied. How am I supose to know why these songs aren't copied ?
I did make sure that the details of thesesongs are the same that means the album, the genre the artist, everything is exactly the same for the 5 songs.
I don't understand and I have no clue what to do
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

No DRM and they all come from the same place. I really checked if everything is the same for those 5 songs and yet every single detail about them is the same and the fact that there's no message telling me why it does not copy them is weird

How do I import songs from ipad album app into itunes?

Hello,
I bought an 5 song ep music app by the Chinese musician Cao Fang (曹方) from iTunes app store, and I want to be able to hear the songs in iTunes, not just through using the iPad app. It doesn't show up in the File Sharing section. So is it possible to import the songs? Can I at least 'play' the app on my computer in iTunes, or is it only playable on the iPad itself?

Hi Nick,
I should work just as you imported songs into your iPod. Try opening your iPod in your ITunes. Once you can see your iPod songs just drag them to your library folder or what ever other folder you want them in.
Since your computer crashed are you using another computer? does it have iTunes and iPod software installed? What OS does it run (windows/Mac)?
