Unable to start Firefox

Hi, when trying to start Firefox, I get the message 'Process is already running.....'
1) The process is not running I have checked.
2) I have rebooted (numerous times.)
3) I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled and rebooted and the message still appears.
4) I have tried to find my lock file and have no idea what Charms are (Mozilla advice on finding the file to delete by hovering in the bottom right of the screen.)
5) I have entered the appdata string in my Start/Search and nothing is found.

See the [["Firefox is already running but is not responding" error message - How to fix it]] article, if you havent already.

also checking in the /home/username/.mozilla/firefox directory I can find no log files.

Did you try to start Firefox in [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Save mode] ?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See:
    * [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

  • [Solved it] Unable to start Firefox/profile is corrupted

Edit: For some reason, I could solve the problem with chkdsk; the folder is now okay again and I can also start Firefox with no problems (although I would still like to know why this even happened), but thanks anyway!
Hello, some minutes ago I tried to start Firefox and got the "Firefox is already running, but not responding" message. I thought this was strange as I had only just started the computer and now matter how often I try, Firefox will only shortly show up in the task manager and disappear after that. But even after trying to start it again, I get the same message...
I thought maybe there's a problem in the Appdata folder and when I tried to access my profile there (in roaming), I'll get a message saying that the path does not exist and the folder cannot be accessed and also that the file or directory may be corrupted. By the way, the profile under local seems fine. After that, I also tried deleting the Temp folder and updating the Firefox version, but that didn't change anything.
At first, I thought there may be an issue with the folder being "read-only" and that's when I saw that apparently the size of the profile folder is 0 bytes... If that is the case, I can imagine that Firefox cannot start, but why would it say that it's already running? And apart from that, I have no idea what could have caused this as everything worked fine just a few hours earlier. I just now also tried starting Firefox on a different account here on Windows (7), and there were no problems, either.
I save my profile every few months so I really don't want to delete the profile folder >< I even just copied the last backup (only three weeks ago) somewhere else within the profile folder, so that too is inaccessable right now...

    Very nice work.

  • Trying to reinstall firefox on a windows 7 machine and I get "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)"

In troubleshooting a different issue I uninstalled Firefox. After fixing the other issue I'm tying to re-install Firefox and am getting an error message that says "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application." The title bar of the window says "setup-stub.exe - Application Error." My PC is a Dell Studio 19 All-in-one running Windows 7 Home Premium.

When I look up that error on Microsoft's forums, I find suggestions ranging from an incompatible update/hotfix to malware...

  • How do I fix this? "Firefox is unable to start correctly (0xc0000056)" I can't start in Safe Mode, either.

My Firefox does not open, at all. When I try to open i get the message that says "Firefox is unable to start correctly (0xc0000056)". I have tried to run the Firefox crash report, which also does not run. I'm unable to start in safe mode, also. All I get, is the above message...nothing else.

I'm not using that extension, so I do not know which files are used in addition to sessionstore.js and you need to check the profile folder yourself for suspect files.
This can be a problem with the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]<br />
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js .

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:<br>

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.
