Unable to Start up Mac
I recently tried to perform maintenance on my computer with the latest version (installed) of TechTool Pro 5. I had created an eDrive on the external drive because there wasn't enough room on my hard drive to create one. The eDrive wouldn't mount or start up. After I tried this, my computer wouldn't start up at all. I tried several different things-- trying to start up with the TechTool Pro disk, a Disk Warrior disk, and the original disk that came with my computer-- couldn't start up with any of them. After much trial and error, the only way I can start up my computer is by disconnecting the external disk, starting the computer holding down the option key, and choosing my hard drive. When it loads, I plug in the external drive, and everything seems to be working fine except that I have to perform the option step every time I shut my computer off (nightly). I also don't have any way to perform maintenance.
Go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and be sure your internal(normal) hard drive is selected. Then restart and see if everything works correctly.
What maintenance where you trying to do on your mac? There is little you should have to do unless you are experiencing problems.

How do remove windows 7 without starting in Mac?
During the Boot Camp process, I inadvertently ran the wrong windows support software. Consequently, I am unable to start in Mac so that I can remove windows and start over again. Thanks for any help.
During startup or a restart, the keyboard will act as a Windows layout until OS X loads. The normal Mac layout, starting left to right would be, Crtl, Option, Command, Space Bar. On some Mac keyboards, Option is also marked Alt.
As a Windows layout (until OS X loads and remaps the keys for the Mac), The Alt (Option) key is in the Windows position next to the space bar and will operate as the Option key before the OS loads.
So, restart and hold down the Alt key to get the startup manager. -

How to start my mac book pro safe mode?
my mac book pro is not start up but showing white screen . what should i do ?
Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. -
Unable to start Safari on Lion 10.7.4
I am suddenly unable to start Safari. This is after replacing my regular drive with an SSD and using Time Machine to restore. Everything else is working fine. I get the "Unexpectedly Quit" message. The following is the detailed crash report. Any suggestions? I can't clear the cache (which I've seen suggested on other threads) because it crashes before it has come all the way up. Couldn't find a Lion version to download; I tried copying the Safari app from another Mac but the copy failed saying that Safari can't be modified or deleted. Running Lion 10.7.4. Thanks for any help.

how to fix "We are unable to start your subscriptions for adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Extended. Subscriptions edition" please heelp
Hi migliii,
I found a few solutions mentioned in this discussion thread Adobe photoshop cs5 extended installation error (Mac); Inconsistency in installer database. If you are unable to resolve your problem still, I'd suggest that you contact Customer Support (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/contact.html). Use any of the options on this page to get in touch with a customer support person.
Thanks,

Unable to start in single-user mode - HD dead?
My MacBook Pro (Mac OS X) refused to start, it hung up on the loading screen where you see the apple and the spinning loading wheel. I found out how to fix this, I had to go into single-user mode and type "/sbin/fsck -fy" to repair/verify the disk (I was unable to do so from the Disk Utility via the Install Disc, the repair/verify buttons were just grayed out).
Anyways, doing this from the command line (single-user mode) fixed the problem and I could boot into Mac OS X (there were more issuses after this point which forced me to do an "Archive and Install").
^ that happened a week ago. And happened again yesterday, hung up on the exact same point. So I boot up my Mac into single-user mode, and type in "/sbin/fsck -fy" to start the process. Different from last time, I got a lot of text this time. It also kept going for a longer while. After about 10 minutes, there was a couple of minutes where nothing happened. So I typed "/sbin/fsck -fy" again (as I'm supposed to do so until it says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK"), and I got some more text, then nothing happened for a while.
Inpatient as I am, I considered the process to be complete, and restarted my Mac by typing "exit".
I think I ****** up my Mac OS X partition at this point. Because when I try to start my Mac now, it automaticly boots into Windows XP (my other partition). Also I cannot enter single-user mode or Verbose mode, the Mac just ignores and goes right into Windows XP.
I've tried to boot from the Install Disc. When I run Disk Utility, the "HD"(name of Mac OS X partition) is grayed out. I can't do an Archive and Install because it cannot detect my main partition.
An interesting thing though: When I have the Install Disc inserted, I can enter single-user mode (by holding cmd+s at startup). However, when I type /sbin/fsck -fy, it starts verifying the Install Disc rather than the HD.
Also when I open My Computer in Windows XP, I can see the other partition (MacDrive). When I select it, I see:
Free Space: 219GB

This indicates that my HD is dead/erased, and that my last three months of work is gone. This just because I'm impatient, and didn't wait for the fsck process to complete.
What is the next step? How can I get into single-user mode so that I can verify/repair my disc?On the point of contacting the folks at Alsoft, I have found that they seem to be unobtainable on www.alsoft.com at present.
I wanted to get in touch as I had a small problem with Diskwarrior on updating to 10.5.5 from 10.5.4 ,
Disk permissions ends with an error code.
I wonder if there were so many queries re this that they are unobtainable?
I run 3 machines from a wireless router, an iMac, an HP laptop with XP and a totally obsolete Dell into which i have squeezed W2000, with a resultant mix of browsers but no contact with the folks at Alsoft.
Am I in a minority of one here? -
FTP error: Unable to start a standalone server
Hello,
I've installed PureFTP Manager, but the following error messages appear when I use different ftp clients:
[Error] Unable to start a standalone server: [Address already in use]
Error: the server dropped the connection (it may be too busy).
I've found a similar problem posted to a number of forums (using different ftp server software) and the explanation seems to be that another program is tying up the port. The solution is to find out which program and disable it. However, this involves using the Terminal and commands, which puts me in deep water.
Could someone please offer a solution?
I have the Mac and a PC connected to the modem/router.
I have a static IP address. LAN IP on the Mac: 10.1.1.2 which I'm entering to test.
I have FTP access disabled in the Mac OS firewall settings.
FTP access is not blocked by service filtering in the modem/router's firewall settings.
I've set up port-forwading:
Private IP: 10.1.1.2
Protocal: TCP
Port Start: 21
Port End: 21
Port Map: 21
However, these saved settings disappear the next time I log in to the router's set up window.
G4 DP 867 MHZ Mac OS X (10.2.x) Max OS X (10.2.8)Hello again gordon6010,
What I was intending to convey is that the message you see on your display is a printer software related error. By removing and reinstalling the drivers you may be able to correct the .dll error.
In regards to the beginning of the error message "Unable to Start a DCOM Server", I recommend this document on how to Enable or Disable DCOM. This should help if the DCOM is disabled on your desktop. For further assistance, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop computer?
What version of Windows do you have installed on your computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Are you trying to install a printer on your network or specifically on your computer?
As an aside, there is no higher level technician as this is a free peer-to-peer forum of support. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

Unable to start xsp web service - Windows Client
Hi all,
I've got a problem with the Windows client (Windows 7 64-bit). When I start the client I get an error that says:
Unable to start xsp web service, iFolder will not be able to work, restart the application.
The client actually starts up. However, I'm unable to do anything with it. Are there any logs I can provide that may give you a bit more insight into what's going on?
I can connect from my mac client and a colleague can connect (from outside the firewall) from his Windows client.
Any thoughts?
Many thanks,
AndrewI am still getting Unable to start xsp web service.
I've found some more info in my event log. I have this error. Any ideas?

I am unable to start up my iMac running on 10.4.11 - the startup disk is installed and will not start up eben when I hold down the "C" Key. I do get the apple, but then it disappears.
Query by serial number
Apple's warrenty database will identify the type of Mac you have. Your serial number is securely sent, but you get only the name of your machine.

This site provides more information, but lacks security.
"A serial number is a unique, identifying number or group of numbers and letters assigned to an individual piece of hardware or software. It's used for various things depending on the product / brand but what is your Mac's serial number for and more importantly... what is it hiding and what can it do for you ?"

I'm unable to update my mac mini. When I try it shows a message "software quit unexpectedly". I try and reopen but message returns.
Hi, is this using Software update?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If 10.7 or more, reboot holding CMD+r down to boot from the Restore Partition, use Disk Utility there. -
ATI Radeon X1900 XT card - World of Warcraft was unable to start 3D acceler
Mac Pro Duo-Core Intel Xeon 2 Ghz
6G ram, OSX10.5.8
World of Warcraft 3.2
I just replaced my original NV 7300 GT video card with a new ATI Radon X1900 XT.
When I try to launch World of Warcraft, I get the error message "World of Warcraft Was Unable to Start 3D Acceleration"
Per WoW, I deleted the W T F, Cache and Interface folders. I ran Apples Firmware updater for the new card. I even tried reinstalling the entire WoW game . . . no luck.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Kudos to World of Warcraft Mac Technical Support for helping me solve this issue.
"Boo-Hiss" to this forum for simply pushing a different video card.
Apple Charges $399 for an ATI X1900 XT upgrade kit.
An ATI X1900 XT "flashed over" for a Mac can be purchased brand new for $119.
There is a required Booster Cable for the card to work fully. Standard apps such as Word and Safari will work w/o the booster cable, but not 3D accelerated programs such as World of Warcraft.
The booster cable is Apple Part 922-7128. Apple Stores will not sell customers the cable. The cable is rare, but can be purchased on ebay and from a select few Apple independent online dealers.
And "boo-hiss" to Apple for selling 3-year old technology at more than 3X the price of ebay dealers. -

Unable to start from disk while holding C key.
Hi for some reason I am unable to start boot from disk (Mac OS X install disk) while holding down C key. I've forgot my password and cant log in.
Is there any other way I can reset my password? Or format my hd? or even reset it back to factory setting?
I lost my os x disk so i bought one from ebay instead. could this cause me not able to boot from cd?
Message was edited by: what's going onIf you are using a grey install disk that is not for your model, that indeed may be why you cannot start the machine with the C key held down.
Another reason may be if the MBP has Firmware Password Utility on.
Is this related to the PowerBook you bought on eBay? You don't seem to have much luck there. -
