Unable to switch Macbook Pro off?

Hi guys,
I recently made the move from pc to mac, and while I have gotten used to mac now, I still have 1 or 2 problems with it....
I have a macbook pro 13, 2.66 ghz core 2 duo, which I got in january, and recently, it WON'T shut down! Its stuck at the blue screen with the loader icon on it..
From what I have found, if I only use the laptop for a small period of time, it will shut down fine, However, if I use it for a few hours, it log off, and do everything, and then it will go the blue screen, and then the blie loader icon will appear, and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off.
I'm on 10.6.7, and I tried resetting the PRAM, but that didn't help. Unfortunately, the nearest apple store is roughly a thousand kilometers away,
so any ideas that you guys have would be much appreciated..
Thanks in advance,
Matthew

Since you already tried resetting the PRAM, and no Apple Store is near, I'd say do a fresh install using the OS X disc. There's some type of driver or software clash that's probably causing this. A fresh install will almost definitely solve it. To prevent it from happening again, make sure your all your software is patched, up-to-date, and all Apple Updates are installed. Good luck!

  • Hi, I turned my macbook pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to use the volume at all! I went to system preferences sound output BUT everything is light grey and it some-how looks like I don't have permission.

Hi, I turned my MacBook Pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to turn up or down my volume. It comes up with all the volume bars and a little circle sign with a diagonal line in the middle, like a stop sign. I have gone to system preferences > Volume > Output BUT all my volume preferences have gone all light grey and wont let me access them.
    Anyone help?

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to  one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).
    Thanks again, Sandra2474.

  • Purchased a MacBook Pro off someone and was wondering if there is a way to delete everything and start fresh?

I just purchased a MacBook Pro off of someone. They left a lot of their information on it, email, photos and all that. Is there an easy way to just delete everything on it and start fresh?

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • I dropped my macbook pro off my couch and when it landed it was shut, i opened it and it was on a grey sceen so i shut it down with the button and when i turned it back on it was kind of slow but not anymore i just want to know if i should be worried

i dropped my macbook pro off my couch and when it landed it was shut, i opened it and it was on a grey sceen so i shut it down with the button and when i turned it back on it was kind of slow but not so much anymore. i quit all of my applications before i shut down and i noticed that when there are no more things t quit and i click "hide finder" its not grey anymore it still gives me the option to hide it when i dont need to, little things bug me and i just got this laptop, i just want to know if i should be worried

I suggest you immediately make a backup of your data. You don't know if or when the computer will show some symptoms from the drop. You may want to, for piece of mind, take the computer to an authorised service center for assessment. No one here can assess any internal damage you may have done.

  • Switching MacBook Pro on without opening lid connected to external display

    Hi all,
Simple question: I have external monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to my MacBook Pro and I wish to turn it on without having to open up my laptop.
I did find a resource over at Mac OS X Hints, but unlike other articles it is very lame. http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080908013535674&query=keyboard. I do want a proper legit way of doing it!
For example, on PCs you can go in to your boot ram setup and make it so any key press can switch the PC on. Is this possible with my Mac Book Pro? I haven't been able to find a clean solution yet.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Sorry, but it's not been possible to power up any Mac from turned-off state from an external device for a number of years (with the sole exception of the current Xserve). So you will have to open the screen on your MacBook, power it up, close the screen which will put the unit to sleep, then wake it from the external keyboard/mouse. Or attempt the trick on the site you posted for remotely pressing the power switch.
For this reason, most people who use their MacBook like you do just put it to sleep rather than powering it off.

  • Is it ok to NEVER TURN my macbook pro off , but when finishing work put it to sleep ?

I have a setup that makes me use the HDMI while closing the mac. yet, each time I need to open the macbook pro I'll have to remove all the usbs and thunderbolt plugged in. So I want to switch it to sleep rather that Shut down. so when I press any button on my external keyboard it turns on.
The only concern is "will this harm my macbook on the long run ?"
I'm using a Macbook Pro 15" with retina display
    Intel Core i7
    16 GB RAM
    500 GB Flash Storage

I don't know the official answer to this, but I rarely turn mine off, sleep only for years now. Turn off and reboot for sofware installs and such, but it has not been a problem.
Someone else will surely address this as well.

  • Macbook Pro Off-Center on LCD TV

I am wanting to use my Macbook Pro hooked to a Samsung 32" LCD TV as a secondary display. When I attempt to set the Samsung resolution to 1360x768 in Mac's display preference, the image is off-center with a black band down the left side of the tv. I have used the dvi to vga supplied with my macbook, and have vga going into the set. When i set the resolution to 1024x768 the image is centered (but stretched).
Anyone else seen this? Any suggestions? I have searched the forum and the entire interweb, but cannot find anything.
    Thanks!

Yes, DVI-to-HDMI is probably your best bet.

  • How to switch Macbook pro screen to projector in Windows

    Hi guy,
I've bought a Macbook Pro Intel based and I've installed O/S Windows XP on it.
When I use Windows, I want to change my screen to projector for my presentation but I can not do this. I pressed hot keys from F1-F10 on my Macbook Pro but there's no signal on my Projector.
When I use Leopard, it's working well but in Windows is not.
Could you please help me how to switch screen to projector in Windows installed on a Macbook Pro?
    Thanks and best regards,
    David

I dont have access to an XP machine but im sure you can access the external display via right clicking on the desktop and try extending to second desktop or using the ATi controlling software to use the secondary display.
afaik theres no way to use the Function buttons (on a mac) like you would on a normal laptop.

  • Unable to connect macbook pro (lion) to internet

I have a macbook pro that is approx 8 months old. About 2 days ago I found that I cannot connect to the internet. The symtoms are quite confusing. I would first like to say that I can connect my wife's dell/win7 fine, I can also use my wireless printer which is connected to a win7 server, I can also use my IPhone and IPad. If I go into the macbook network configuration I can view the router. I can successfully setup a connection a get assigned a valid ipaddress. I am able to ping the router fine. It is just when I try to use the browser(firefox or safari) I can't connect to a site. I did reset the router a number of times with no change. I tried to get new ipaddresses by renewing the DHCP Lease. This will get me a new ipaddress but I still can't connect to a website. There is one very strange thing, if I go into my router's configuration page and get a list of connected devices I will see my macbook listed. If I hit refresh to update the list of devices sometimes the macbook is not displayed. I can refresh it again and then it will be displayed again. I am technically savy so I understand a bit about networking and routers, but this is really doing me no good. The is one thing that shouldn't have an effect on the connect, I recently installed Parallels, like I said this shouldn't have caused a problem like this.

    [Problem] Can't connect www.apple.com
    The solution.
I have read several articles about changing DNS on the MAC.
I did not try to follow the advice of those articles because all we need is a simple, and all that we do not need is complicated.
I open Apple > System settings... >  Network > and choose Wi-Fi, DNS tab.
    There I saw
    DNS Servers: 192 168.2.1
    Search Domains: Home
With use the "+" on right side I replaced the "Home" to "www.google.com".
Now I can connect to www.apple.com and I have a faster internet than ever before.

  • Unable to bind MacBook Pro (running 10.6 - Snow Leopard ) to Windows Server 2003 domain

Hi there, I've been working on this problem for a few hours now (and a few hours last Thursday) and don't feel I'm getting anywhere, so I'm reaching out for help....
My organisation has just purchased a new MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) and as a Technical Support Engineer I have been asked to configure it for an end user.
I am currently trying to join it to our corporate domain, which is a Windows Server 2003 domain operating at the Windows Server 2003 Native domain functional level.
The MacBook is configured to use DHCP, and has been assigned valid IP address, DNS servers etc by the DHCP server. It can resolve all names on our network, including the names of our domain controllers. When I use nslookup to resolve the name of the domain "my_domain.local" it returns a list of DC's on the domain, which would indicate to me that name resolution is working perfectly. It is using our primary DNS server, 'Ponus' to resolve these names - Ponus is also the Domain Controller in this site.
To attempt to join the MacBook to the domain I have created a computer account for it on the domain, in the Computers container. I have gone into System/Library/Core Services and run the Directory Utility.
In the directory Utility I have ticked Active Directory and clicked on it to edit. The 'Forest' field is greyed out and set to 'Automatic', in the 'Domain' field I have entered my_domain.local, which is the FQDN of my domain. I click Bind and when prompted enter my Domain Admin username and password (in the 'Create Computer Account in:' field it displays correctly as CN=Computers,DC=my_domain,DC=local.)
When I click OK I get the message: Invalid domain. An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com).
I have attempted writing the domain as my_domain.local, my_domain.local., MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL and MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL. but I get the same error each time. I have checked and rechecked DNS is resolving OK, and cannot see why it cannot find the Domain and Forest from the FQDN that I am entering. Even so I tried creating records in the hosts file on the MacBook to point to the main Domain Controller at this site (Ponus) but this didn't change anything.
I have seen a few people report the same issue online but the responses tend to fizzle out before anyone gets to the bottom of it. I have seen some indication that people with an understore (_) in their domain name, or with a .local domain name may experience issues with joining Mac hosts, however these details are very vague and if true there must be a workaround.
If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, I'm running out of time to complete this work and have run out of things to try.
I have an inkling that this is due to the Mac for some reason not reading the SRV records for the DCs and LDAP in DNS, or to do with the Mac looking only at one SRV record (ie. there is one for a new DC that we haven't deployed yet), not being able to reach this and giving up, but I'm clutching at straws really with my limited knowledge of the Macs process for joining the domain.
    Many many thanks,

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

  • Unable to connect Macbook Pro to Sharp Aquos TV through thunderbolt HDMI

I have a brand-spanking new Macbook pro 15" Retina with Thunderbolt
A new moshi HDMI connector, and new MediaBridge hdmi cable connected to my Sharp Aquos TV and it's as if its not plugged in.
I've read a lot of helpful sites with instructions on how to do this and this just isn't working.
    What am I doing wrong?

If you cannot use nslookup <PrinterIP> and get a name back, Bonjour (aka mDNS) is being blocked by the router.

  • Unable to upgrade macbook pro 15 inch early 2011 AMD drivers

Hi im having an issue, I recently purchased Battlefield 3 and I am getting an error telling me that I need to upgrade to the 11.7 driver, I go to AMD's website and tried to find my driver with no luck, I went to their page on finding the right drivers, I select MAC graphics, Mac Bootcamp, Macbook pro, Windows 7 64 bit, and install them and I still get the same error and when I open Catlyst it still says I have the 11.1 driver, I go into device manager and select my card ( an AMD Radeon HD 6490M) and select it , click the driver tab and click update and it says its the latest one, what do I do?

Post copied from previous discussion thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/17117482#17117482
This may be an old post, but for those still looking for an answer you can get the 13.12 (December 2013) AMD graphics driver from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/915fpdtgbgoksct/kOY7bKHgKq Select "Download->Download as .zip".
I only modded the driver for the windows 7 64-bit install, so if you using windows 8 under bootcamp you'll have to follow the included instructions yourself.
Please let me know/like this post if this works for you. (It would be great if you could report whether it worked based on using Win 7 or Win 8)
