Unable to syn - no space ... but there should be

Hi,
I went to sync this morning and it said not enough space available. It said it needed 7GB and only 500MB free. When I checked my iPhone I noticed that it only had about 4 podcasts (video) on there, but it must think they are all still on there using space
When I look at the details in iTunes it says 52 video items, yet when I search on the iPhone itself no video or podcasts found (I deleted the 4 that were on there to see if that made a difference)
Any ideas?

I want to report constant poor coverage in Vienna, Virginia in Northern Virginia zip code 22182. This is the location of my mother in law. My wife travels there frequently (she is there now) but has to work in a library because cell coverage is so poor. She purchased a MiFi device from Verizon and that was also unsuccessful. The most you can see is one bar and audio and data signals are lost constantly. Neither she or I can work there while staying at her house. Vienna is located in one of the most populated areas in the United States. How is it possible the coverage is so poor? The signal is poor both in an outdoors but better when we drive 5-10 miles away.

    Try restoring your iPod...
    Restore the iPod
And then use iTunes to update your iPod and put all your music onto the iPod.

  • IPod not synching as "there is not enough free space" (but there is)

I have a 64Gb iPod touch which I have been having problems with since I bought it.  The problem I am going to decribe has happened three times.
To the best of my memory, this is what has happened.
Starting with a newly purchased  iPod I synched it with my existing library.  This worked and I was able to play songs on the iPod with no problems.  The iPod still had around 8Gb left unused. A few days later I imported a few (maybe 3 or 4)  new CDs into my iTunes library and hit Sync.  The Sync process got as far as step 5 of 5 and hung, I left it for a good hour and it got no further.  I think I may have switched everything off and on again and then retried, this time I got a dialog box saying that the iPod cannot be synched because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additional 40Gb required).
Looking on the iPod I could see the full track listing for all my albums, but everything now had a red circle with a dot inside, and was un-playable.  It's as if the songs were all still on the iPod (taking up disk space) but the index had somehow lost track of them (or something).
The only thing I could think of was to reset and restore the device, I also deleted and re-created the iTues library and started again, re-importing everything. Again, this worked fine until I later on inported a new CD to the library and tried to re-sync, whereupon exactly the same thing happened.
I have not been able to find any support questions with quite the same problem I am having - has anyone encountered anything similar and have a solution?

It does have a red circle inside, but I am on Windows 7 and have not upgraded anything.
My problem looks similar to this one Re: iTunes library disappeared, re-added all my songs now iPod doesn't have enough free space to sync.
I can solve it by a compete restore and resync but when I try to add something and sync again I get the same problem and it seems like the only think to be done is to restore everything again, which clearly I can't do every time I add a new CD!

  • I have a 3g iphone and I need to know how to delete old photos from my phone!! I need the space but there is no way to delete the pictures!! Help!!!

I have a 3g iPhone and I need to know how to delete old photos. Need to free up space and there is no clear way to delete these photos!! Can someone please let me know how to get rid of these pictures!!!! Help!!!

There are a number of ways to delete pictures from the Camera Roll.  One is to open Camera Roll in the thumbnail view, tap the arrow button (top right), tap all the pictures you want to delete, tap the Delete button ant the bottom.  Photo Library pictures are deleted by unchecking Sync Photos on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings, followed by syncing your phone.

  • I have an iPad mini with 16gb and it says I only used 13.4gb but when I try to download a game or something it says not enough available space when there should be at least 2 go left

What do I do to get back my space?

THe game likely needs space to 'unzip' so to speak and expand. Not to mention that on a 16 gig iPad, you only have 13 and change left after you take the operating system into account. (Settings, general, usage will tell you how much room you have left)
You can always delete some content to make room. Or if you ever synced it to a computer, download your game via the computer then sync it onto you device, you don't need as much free room that way.

  • Time Machine claims not enough space, but there's plenty

    Hello --
I'm having a problem with my Time Machine backup ever since upgrading to Yosemite. After the initial backup, I get these errors: "The backup disk needs 838.03 GB for the backup but only 712.05 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."
However, there is plenty of space. The initial backup took up about 898 GB of my 1.61 TB machine. Subsequent incremental backups should only take up a fraction — and I'm confident that I haven't added hundreds of gigabytes of new data to my disk. However, each time Time Machine tries to run its backup, I get the same error.
Time Machine is backing up both my small internal hard drive (128 GB) and the rest of the backup comes from an external drive. It worked fine under Mavericks, but under Yosemite it seems that Time Machine doesn't realize that the hundreds of gigabytes on the external drive has already been backed up before and doesn't all need to be backed up again.
Any thoughts? I had a backup that was several months old earlier; once I started getting this error, I wiped that backup thinking that a fresh backup might sole the error. No such luck.
I'm running Yosemite 10.10.0 on a mid-2011 MacBook Air, backing up to a Sinology NAS. (My wife who is still using Mavericks is continuing to successfully backup to the same drive.)
    Thanks everyone!
    - geoff

I have the exact same problem with almost the same setup: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012) running Yosemite 10.10, an external harddrive and a Time Capsule 2 TB (4th Generation, Version 7.6.4). I even took the same actions as geoff2 (deleting the complete set of backups from Mavericks and making a new complete backup on Yosemite). On my internal harddrive 270 GB are occupied, on my external harddrive around 980 GB are occupied and the MacBook of my girlfriend is also backed up to the Time Capsule. At the moment around 646 GB are available on the Time Capsule.
Now I get the same error message saying, that 977 GB are needed for a backup but only 650 GB are available. Interestingly backups without the external drive connected will complete without any problems.
The external drive has a "GUID Partition Table". So it seems both of Linc Davis suggestions don't apply to the problem (we both have either GUID Partition Table or Logical Volume Group and the issue appears both on a NAS-Storage and on a Time Capsule).
Looking for additional information I looked into the console and found the following report: "Inheritance scan may be required for '/Volumes/Dolphin', associated with previous UUID: BA36E38E-71F9-39E1-BF72-36AF9D4BB45F". "Dolphin" is the name of the external drive. What does that mean? Is it of any relevance? For more information I will post all the reports concerning the backup below (it's mainly about trying to free more space on the TC by deleting old backups). "Yosemite" is my internal OS X Volume, "Hamster" is the name of the Volume on the TC, "Nifty" is a Nifty mini drive in the SD-Card-Slot.
I already verified the backups using the Option-Click on the menu bar symbol and I deleted and rebuilt the Spotlight index but it changed nothing. We could of course delete the backup volume (NAS or TC) and start a new backup, but I have a feeling, that the issue will appear again afterwards. Any other suggestions?

  • Can not add songs to ipod--says not space when there should be

I have deleted many, many songs from my ipod but when I try to add just one song, I get the message that there is not enough space for the file. Also, the space available is not going down when I delete songs. Help!! Do I need to delete everything and start over?? Many thanks for any help.

Are you deleting actual songs and not just deleting playlists?
Deleting playlists (which are links to the songs) will not free up space on an iPod.

  • Time MAchine won't back up due to not enough space, but there is

TIme Machine won't back up. Displays this:
Actual capacity of the external backup drive is 999.68 GB and available is 135 gb .
The imac internal HD capacity is 999.01GB and used space is 636.321 GB.
This problem has occured periodically in the last 12 months or so, so prior to OS version10.8 install in Jul 2012.
I previously called AppleCare, as I have a contract, and tech said I just need to reformat the external drive and start over.
I did that the last time this happened a few months ago, but I don't like that option, as it eliminates all the prior backups,
What if I needed to try to recover something I deleted 3 weeks ago, for example.  I couldn't do so as all backups would have been deleted, of course, by me having refomatted the drive and basically starting over.  Also, I noted in another post about a person having a problem due to using a partitioned drive.  Mine is not partition, as far as I can tell.  See this:
    Any ideas?  Thanks

The solution is essentially "simple." You need a larger hard drive for these backups or you need to use a different backup solution. By this I mean using backup software that does not preserve an archive of old copies of a file, but simply erases old copies in order to replace them with the new copies. By replacing your backup drive can always accommodate the drive it backs up if it is large enough - say the same size. I can suggest:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
All of the above are capable of being scheduled. Synk Pro makes immediate backups of any changed file on the hard drive. You may configure it to archive changes (like Time Machine) or to delete prior copies.

  • TIME MACHINE won't back up as not enough space but there is? HELP!

My time machine was backing up fine and with everything being backed up was filling to about 360gb I backed it up last 5 days ago before it went in for a repair at the apple store (spotlight was not working properly) now I have the machine back and have just put some new photos on so plugged back in the time machine to carry on with backups but it won't back up as it saying it needs 380GB of space and I only have available 144 GB.
The only thing I can see different is that the store has put a macintosh HD icon on my desktop, I am wondering if perhaps it is also trying to back up the time machine, as in theory I have only added another 1-2GB data since my backup before going into the store.
Can anyone help me I can' seem to find anything that says I am backing up the G-Drive Slim (Time machine) as well or can I delete the whole contents of the Time Machine and start again?

I am trying to install knights of the old republic, the app says it needs less than 2gb and I have 4.5gb available.  When I go to install the app it stops and says there is not enough space and send me to settings to free up space.  How can I get this app installed?

By Freeing up some more space.
Most Apps require 2 to 3 times the advertised size to download and install.

  • Cannot restore from Time Machine... "not enough space" but there is

I am trying to restore a 140GB file from Time Machine.  I can see it both through the Time Machine interface and by going through Finder.
I have 202GB free on my Mac hard drive.  Whenever I try to restore the file, or copy it through Finder, I get "Preparing to Copy" for a while and then "The item can't be copied because there isn't enough free space".
No idea how to resolve this - any ideas?

Gosh, I was not expecting that and nothing mentioned in iCreate or MacFormat tuition articles. My task is to move and partition data from my external hard drives, so that I can create partitions to hold various storage for BOOTCAMP to use.
Looks like my external drives are not capable of the task!

  • Memory problem, but there is enough space - virus? pls help!

Since yesterday I am unable to download anyfile, I always get a message saying that there is not enough free disk space, but I happen to have 3GB space still left. I can't save any textedit document, it takes forever to reboot and when I connect my usb external harddrive it is not recognized. moreover skype refuses to start. The internet also got slower and when I have more windows open the task manager shows up and asks me to close down some applications. Strange thing I refused to update last week when the message poped up and when I opened the update today it said that there was nothing to upadate.
What is happening? Is it a RAM problem? or have I got a virus on the board? I really need to work on my computer and seems to me, that I can't eve backup now. I am very grateful for any suggestions.

Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files. How much RAM do you have? With only 3GB of free space, you may have corrupted some of the files on your hard drive.
