Unable to update iPhone software - no error messages

I recently purchased an iPhone a week ago and have just tried to update the software (to 1.1.2). I get as far as "restoring iPhone software..." and that's it. The updating status bar will get to a point, and just stay there. No matter how long the iPhone is connected, the progression bar stays where it is. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Here is my advice, DONOT update the phone if you can at all avoid. I received a similar message and the update put my IPhone back to factory setting and I lost ALL data and will now have to readd everything... There is a post that states there is an issue. I don't know if it is happening with the MACs, but there is something wrong in my opinion with the upgrade when using the PC

I keep getting an error message about missing registry files for burning cd's.

This stupid error message keeps popping up when I start Itunes and I can't figure out how to fix it. I have completely removed all apple products and reinstalled Itunes just like they told me to and it still doesn't work. Can somebody PLEASE help me with this so I can continue burning discs. 1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
2. If you're backing up to a Time Capsule, or an AirDisk attached to a 2013 or later model AirPort Extreme base station, restart it in either of the following ways:
☞ Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
☞ Select the device in the AirPort Utility application and then select
Base Station ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

I figured that was the case, but I've used the same passcode for years and I can't seem to figure out how I managed to screw it up when I set up my phone. Without being able to access my phone for a restore, how would I accomplish this? iTunes? Thank you very much for you help!

THIS HAS EVERY APPEARANCE OF A SOFTWARE GLITCH BY APPLE ... So first suggestion is NOT to begin reinstalling various software but to await some answer & fix from Apple. Too many have same problem on various systems, in my view (I am not an Apple rep but have certainly faced many glitches over the years).

No, I'm just backing up to my PC. I've never backed up to this computer (its my laptop). I've normally use my desk top but it has crashed. It did this to my 3GS but now it's doing it to my new 4s.
