Unable to Turn on Home Sharing after iTunes upgrade
After the latest iTunes upgrade onYosemite, I get an 'Unable to Turn on Home Sharing' error on my 2 Apple TVs plus iPhone and iPad. Previously, I had no problem. I have restarted and reset my iTune on my MacBook plus all the devices now receiving an error message and the inability to utilize Home Sharing.
I can send videos to my Apple TVs from my MacBook through AirPlay, so this is not a network error.
Hi MomjiDoll!
I have an article for you that will help you troubleshoot your ability to use the Home Sharing feature:

Error "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes". But it's on...
When I try to use my Computer section on my Apple TV so that I can view movies or music in my iTunes library it gives me the error "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes". Of course I have done that already in iTunes on my computer. I went into my iTunes preferences and in sharing made sure "Share my library on my local network" was checked. It's not requiring a password so it should be good to go.
Right now I am using my old Qwest modem to get DSL. It's using transparent bridging and I have it plugged into a new Cisco 800 series router and I also have a Cisco Aironet 1200 AG series for my wireless devices. I am using WPA encryption.
I have my entire music library as well and my entire movie library that I like to get through my Apple TV. I am unable to access any of it. I would be so grateful if anyone can help me. It may be an easy fix but I can't find it. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything. Please someone help! Thanks in advance for any help!
I posted this question in the Apple TV section of the forum but have yet to get a response after over a month.I had this issue when i got my apple tv, found that they were on different parts of the network with different ip address parts. They need to be on the same segment (not sure if that is the right term) I have 2 routers one with wireless operating and powerline link to apple tv and the other have the pc with the shared itunes, changed the connections and it works fine.
Hope this helps
My disappointment is having a NAS box with itunes server but it can't be seen. -

The only thing I can think that it is is that I recently changed to a new router. Right now I am using my old Qwest modem to get DSL. I am trying to set up home sharing between my iphone 4s and mac which is running itunes 11. Both are connected to my home wifi network and using the same apple id but on the iphone app it says 'Turn on Home sharing in iTunes on your computer or apple tv using account ***
Does anybody have suggestions as to why this is the case?Understanding Home Sharing - Support - Apple

I've had the apple tv 2 since the week it came out and haven't had much trouble with it until now. I haven't changed anything with my network settings. I have noticed the apple tv light seems to turn on at random times now when not being used. Now just about every time I try to access my iTunes library I get "To access your itunes on apple tv, turn on home sharing in itunes on your computer using (my account name)". My iTunes library is not listed. If I restart iTunes my computer with iTunes open will now be listed but when I select it it tries to connect them errors out. If I restart the computer then everything works fine. That is until next time I try to connect and I have to do it all over again. I don't want to have to restart my computer every time I use the apple tv. Any idea why this just started happening? Everything has worked until now. Bug in the latest iTunes maybe?
Thanks.Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. -
I keep getting the "unable to turn on Home Sharing" message on my phone.
Every time I try to share my library, I get the "Unable to turn on Home Sharing" when its done. I put in my apple ID in correctly on both devices. (iPhone 4s and PC.)
The following indicates an incorrect password as one possible cause: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4557
If you are sure the password is correct, the following previous discussion also gives some information on possible firewall and/or router issues: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24386294#24386294 -
I only noticed this issue when I added a second apple tv to my network last night.
I keep getting the error message "turn on home sharing in iTunes". This is already enabled however i have to keep disabling this and then re-enabling it to get it to work. This solution is short lived as this error returns randomly within an hour.
I believe apple have introduced a bug with the last iTunes release.
It's very annoying....I would love to know who tested this rubbish at apple !!I only noticed this issue when I added a second apple tv to my network last night.

I've done all of the above but I'm still displaying the message: to access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on home sharing in iTunes on your computer using ....... My home sharing is on ???? Confused, I've restarted and reset Apple TV with no change
You mention doing all of the above, what would that be exactly?
The article linked above is for airplay, have you checked home sharing tips?

It asks me, in apple tv when I go to my "Library" to turn on home sharing. It's on. When I turn it off and back on I can access my itunes stuff fine for a day or two and then it doesn't work again. I've tried unplugging appletv, reboot the router (att uverse), and then plug in apple tv again and it doesn't help. it's still give me the message. the only thing that works, temporarily, is to turn off home sharing and turn it back on.
I'm using itunes version 10.5.0 on windows 7. can someone help me with this? I can't run up and down the stairs all the time. I have bad knees and other conditions that stop me from doing that. Please help.
Thanks.
Jim.Hey all,
I've been having similar problems so I put a packet analyzer on the network to see what's really happening. (Apologies in advance if this post is too techno-babbly...)
Some background:
How do Apple devices find each other over the network?
iTunes with home shaing turned on sends out a message to a special IP address called a multicast (224.0.0.251, in this case.) All your Apple devices listen to this multicast address and respond over that same address. This process applies to iTunes, AppleTV and Apple Remote at least (those are the things I've been testing with.)
How do Apple devices communicate with each other once they're found?
Once they find each other, they establish a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) communication session. This connection is only between two devices. In this case, iTunes and AppleTV or Apple Remote and AppleTV. The TCP session is how data gets transferred between devices.
The problem:
I captured the protocol traffic between my PC and AppleTV first with the firewall software turned off. In my case, I use Norton 360. What I see is iTunes and AppleTV communicating over the multicast address every 100 seconds. My iTunes usually 'disappears' from AppleTV and the Apple Remotes within about 5 minutes so I left the firewall off for half an hour and everything worked fine. I turned the firewall software back on and then restarted everything. iTunes then did the device discovery and all the devices found each other. Then, after a period of about five minutes of inactivity, the multicast discovery protocol stopped being sent by my PC. Why? I really don't know. From watching the apple protocol's timing, contents and behavior, I see nothing wrong with the implementation. I've done troubleshooting on other location-based multicast protocols for work and have seen some dumb things but Apple's protocol is done correctly and behaves exactly as I would expect.
The solution:
I put a rule into my firewall software explicitly allowing the multicast IP address and also the local subnet that my devices use. I then moved the new firewall rules to the top of the list to ensure that they will be 'hit' before any of the other rules in the list. After that, I left the firewall on and tested for a while then left everything idle for an hour. When I came back, everything still worked. I would suggest that replacing your firewall software won't necessarily help you here. You just need to make sure that the rules for the Apple stuff are put in manually and are at the very top so that another deny rule in the list doesn't trigger before the new permit rules. Hopefully it goes without saying but doing the above leaves your PC completely wide open on the local network so, if you use wireless, please be sure to use encryption on it.
Hope that helps... -
Home Sharing After iTunes Update to 11.1.5.5 - HELP!
I am unable to enable Home Sharing after updating to iTunes 11.1.5.5.
I've updated my Apple TV (3rd Gen) along with iTunes 11.1.5.5, restarted all my devices (iPad Air with iOS 7.0.6, iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.6, Apple TV 3rd Gen and Windows 7 64bit PC), restarted my cable modem and router, logged out of iTunes Home Sharing, then back in, restarted my PC AGAIN and verified that all my devices are on the exact same network. My firewall settings are completly unchanged since prior to updating to iTunes 11.1.5.5 and I've verified this. I've also even tried switching all devices to the other network band on my router and switched them all back to no avail.
This has become so cumbesome with Apple every time there is an update, I crindge every time I see one available. Someone at Apple needs to WORK THIS BUG OUT!!! Or, Chormecast will be my new friend!! I thought Android devices were buggy, but I'm having second thoughts as I've NEVER had this much trouble with such a simple networking concept. iTunes Home Sharing has seriously become a complete mess!!
Any advice here???? All I want to do is watch my movie!!!
My Setup:
iPad Air WiFi 32GB, iOS 7.0.6

HT1338 Can't turn on home sharing in iTunes
I have Lion and can't turn on Home Sharing. I get an error message 5506. I have a verified Apple ID and password
Welcome to the Apple Community.
You would only need homesharing on your iPad if you want to use the remote app (which is quite handy actually). To be able to use the iPad with the Apple TV, you use AirPlay, but the iPad won't show up in a list on the Apple TV, you send content from the iPad itself.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices. -
Unable to turn on home sharing
My iPad will not allow me to sync with movies that are in my itunes library on my desktop computer, despite the fact that my apple TV
will allow thisSettings>Music or Videos>Home Sharing. Sign into your Apple ID in order to enable home sharing on the iPad. You don't sync videos on the iPad, you stream the movies to the device over WiFi.
You have to be signed into the same Apple ID on the iPad as you are signed into on the iPad. -
Iphone 5. Anything else I can try? Itunes and iphone and the app are all up to date.
I brought my macbook air at home, everything worked perfectly: iPhone, iPad and Apple TV can connect. So basically I guessed that the issue was coming from the iMac, something preventing it to be discovered. I've checked the bonjour broadcasting and oh, surprise, the iMac wasn't broadcasting... Weird because it's a setup from a Time Machine, the environment I am running currently on the macbook air.
Anyway, if this can help someone else:
I've ran:
ps aux | grep mDNS
and saw that for the iMac the daemon was launched with the argument -NoMulticastAdvertisements.
I've setup the daemon to run back as normal and restarted the computer:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder ProgramArguments -array /usr/sbin/mDNSResponder -launchd
After the reboot, everything works flawlessly (it has never worked before for the 6 months I had the Apple TV).
Also interesting discovery and I think it's new because I don't remember being able to do that before, but some of my devices are on the separate 5Ghz network, some are on the 2.4Ghz and they can still all communicate flawlessly. I can use AirPlay on the Export Express that is on the 2.4 from the iMac that is on the 5Ghz, and I can access the iMac library from whatever band. Pretty nice! -
Sorry i wrote everything in the topic.
If you are running iTunes 11 on a 64bit Win7 PC, try running iTunes in XP Compatibility mode. It doesn't make much sense, but it worked for me.
