Unable to Understand iMove Events, Projects, or iMovie Photo Library.  Help!

I've got iMovie 10.1 and, unlike other Apple software, I cannot make heads or tails about how it is storying my video clips.   Things that appear in IMovie Library do not appear in All Events.  How can that be possible?  Shouldn't All Events contain any clip I have imported?  I can't even figure out what is the difference between those two folders.   I can't figure out what All Projects contains. either.  It seems to contain the same thing that is in iMovie Library so why have two folders with different names that have the same things?
I've been trying to research this on the web and have not found anybody who can explain what these different folders mean.   Can somebody here do it?
Also, I can't delete a clip no matter what I do.  If I right click on it and say move to trash (while in IMovie Library) it looks like it deleted it but when I go to the actual folder in the Finder, where IMovie Library is,  the clip is still there.   This is one of those maddening cases where the delete button does not delete anything.
The help for iMovie is basically useless.  I cannot find any explanation as to how to delete a clip or how to organize them using these confounding folder names that seem to be different names for exactly the same thing.  Has anybody mastered this?

iMovie 10.1 stores everything in a library package with the extension .imovielibrary but you can have more than 1 library.  When in iMovie, 'All Events' should show all the events in the currently open libraries just as 'All Projects' should do for projects.  These are not actual folders but simply display all the items currently available from the open libraries.
Deleting clips is described in help under:  Browse & organize the library - Organize your events & projects - Delete movies, trailers, clips, and events
Help does contain a lot more information that appears at first but its not always obvious which section to find it in. Its worth going through it all carefully because so many things have been changed in imovie 10 compared to 9.
Some patience is needed to get in tune with the new way of doing things.
Best of luck!
Geoff.

  • Photos from recent event not appearing in photo library

I have recently uploaded photos from a recent trip. I have named the event and it is listed and accessible through 'events'. The event is also listed under the 'recent' menu. However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
I want to sort the photos into my own order manually, but when I access the photo through the events menu, the option to sort photos manually is blanked out.
Any help would be gratefully received! Many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
Are you referring to the Photos mode in iPhoto? That mode cannot be sorted manually. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
A workaround is to create a regular album and add the entire library to it. Then you will be able to manually sort the photos. New photos added to the library and the album will initially be located at the bottom of the album's window.
Albums give you the most control over displaying of the photos.

  • Imovie photo slideshow help

Hello! I am using imovie for the first time to make a photo slideshow set to music. I am up to about 100 pictures and for some reason, each one I add will only display for a few seconds. I change it to 5 seconds, and it will adjust but it will also reduce the # of seconds another slide displays. The more I change, the more that I see are only displaying for 1 or 2 seconds.
Is there a maximum length in imovie or is this something else?
    Help is greatly appreciated.

The way transitions work is that they will take half from the slide in front and half from the slide behind.
For example, if you have 3 five second slides, it looks like this:
    {5 second slide} {5 second slide} {5 second slide}
The total length is 15 seconds.
If you add two second transitions, it will look like this:
    [4 second slide} {2 second transition} {3 second slide} {2 second transition} {4 second slide}
The total length is still 15 seconds.
For many applications, especially in video, this is the way most people want it.
If your prefer that all slides stay at 5 seconds with a two second transition in between, there is a trick. The total length in my example will now be 19 seconds, which is unacceptable for video, but is OK for stills.
To do this, go into File/Project Properties and set the default photo length to be 5 seconds, and set it to apply to all photos in the project, not just ones that are added in the future.

  • The video library is empty in iMovie on iOS after update to iCloud photo library

I updated to iCloud photo library and all of my photos and videos are now in the cloud instead of my iDevice. When I open iMovie in iDevice, the photo/video library is empty. How can I use my videos in projects?

iCloud photo library will be introduced as beta in an iOS 8 update scheduled for October.  Read under "Pricing & Availability" here: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/09/09Apple-Announces-iOS-8-Available-Septem ber-17.html.

I cannot access Content Library in iMovie - Content Library doesn't show on the iMovie screen and is greyed out when accessed through "windows" tab at the top. Also unable to update the projects/events (a suggested solution for a similar question). I haven't had this issue before, I have always used the content library on the screen but haven't used this for about a month. How can I make the Content Library available?

Thanks so much! I am backing up the entire computer now with an external hard drive - this should be fine right? And surely if I am backing up the whole computer these projects/videos will be backed up too? I wasn't sure how to do this any other way and I am clearly not great with tech issues. Once this is done and I am sure my projects/videos are safe I will do the delete and reinstall bit. Thanks for taking the time to help

  • Unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks. Please Help! Due date coming up!

I've unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks.I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb of RAM and 700 gb of free space on the hard drive. The video I am trying to export is 48 mins long with most of the source footage from a NIkon D3100 and several other cammcorders. I've been exporting with Apple Intermediate codec because that was the only one that has work so far but it only worked once and since then I have had to make changes to the project and now I'm unable to get it to work. For all Quicktime exports in H.264 or AIC (my prefered format for this export since I figured it'd offer the highest quality when I import it into Encore for making a dvd out of it) Which just stops exporting in the last few minutes without explination as to why or it crashes and quits. It either leaves a partial file or nothing at all. When I do "export movie" I get a "not enough memory Heap zone error"
I don't know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated!
By the way I happen to have Adobe CS6 Production Premium but didn't know how to use it as well when starting the project and now really regret not using it because it appears to be 10x more stable and capable of handling all the tasks I want it to do.

Are your event clips in h.264? If so, you can solve this by Right clicking on your Event Name and choose "Optimize Media". You can choose Full for 1080P or Large for 960P according to your preference.
After you have optimized your Event, you should be able to Share with no problem.

-108 mean you are running out of (free) RAM.
Try restarting the computer just prior to sharing. That frees up RAM.

Ok - after much cutting, trial and error and days of work I have never really established a root cause for the -108 error. Nothing I did resolved the issue to the orginal project.
The only work around I have found is to split the Original Project into two.
What I found was that anything around the 60 mins mark and above just failed to render in HD and showed the -108 error.
What worked for me was creating two project files - one around 57mins long - the other a part 2 - around 17 mins long. All using exactly the same source clips, photo's, music and transitions as the orginal.
This now works. I guess having it split in two makes it a little easier to work with as I wont have to keep rendering the first part which does not change but really wish Apple would throw some light on this.
Anyway - I hope all of the above at least proves useful for others.
    Good Luck

  • How to restore iMovie 10 events & projects from Time Machine?

Here is the scenario I am facing: I completed some projects and then moved those events & projects to an external HD that subsequently died.  The question I have is how can I tap into Time Capsule's history to restore the events and projects I moved out from the internal HD and later lost because the external HD died?  All of this happened in Mac OS Mavericks, running iMovie 10, so "my stuff" lives within the "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" file whose content I should not see/modify.
    Thank you,  eugen

    Hello eugen_nw
Open up Finder and navigate to your Movies folder where the library was stored and enter Time Machine and you should see the cascading Finder Windows and you can go back an find the file and then click Restore to bring back the file. Check out the article below and there is a section for restoring files.

  • If i move my iphoto & iMovie source library / Events and Projects to an external hard disk, due to size, will my existing slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly, possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I was planning on manually backing up my external to the time capsule - but is there a way to set it up to back up automatically instead?
Time Machine will backup up automatically - you can not have your iPhoto library on the same volume as the TM backup (it will not work and it would not be a backup)
Dragging the iPhoto library to any external drive will backup it us also
I was also thinking about having the library copied to another external (I mean we're talking about irreplaceable photos here) - would i just drag a copy of the library to that drive as well?
Yes - that is a good idea - I run TM giving me hourly backups and a daily clone of my entire system giving me a bootable backup - plus do an occasional TM backup at our second home so I have one off site
is it possible to deal with my imovie library in the same way? so all my movies and photos are on my external?
Probably - but I use iMovie very little - better question for the iMovie forum

  • Moving the iMovie 9 Resources (Events & Projects) Folders ?

Hi there. Recently I moved my iTunes Library and Aperture Library folder to an external dedicated 1TB hard drive.... this has been great in freeing up valuable hard drive space on my main computers hard drive. My iMovie resource files (i Movie Events & iMovie Project) are also very large and it would be great to move these to the external 1TB drive. But when I look at the preferences for the app... I don't see a "selection destination library" option. It must be something silly I'm not seeing.... or can it be... you can't have the resource files exist outside the main "Movies" folder on the main user drive.
Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.
    Yours sincerely,
    Anthony

You can move Events and Projects to the external drive. This must be done in iMovie, not the Finder.
First click VIEW/By DISK. You will see your properly formatted drives listed in the Events source pane and the Projects source pane. You can drag and drop Events and Projects to these disk icons. iMovie will automatically create the proper folders on the external drive.
There are additional options in iMovie 09. For example, you can move an Event, Project, and associated resources to an external drive together, so that if you need to port them to a different computer, it is easily done. See the HELP for details.

  • Delete iMovie Events, Projects, Sharing after update iMovie 10.0?

After updating to iMovie 10.0 in Finder appears a 'iMovie-library' but the folders 'iMovie Events, Projects and Sharing' are still there too. These last folders are roughly same size as the new 'iMovie-library'. Can you delete these old folders? I could use the space!
I have already updated my old library.
    Thanks in advance!

I updated to Mavericks and the new iMovie last night as well as I have always been an early adopter. Unfortunately this time, I think I was a little too quick.
From what I can tell, the new iMovie takes all old events and creates a new iMovie library. I believe if you wanted to, you could potentially revert back via time machine and grab the old imovie back and use the old events and projects folders? Can someone please confirm? I would like to do this.
After I did my upgrade, I was left with to iMovie events libraries. One was called iMovie events and the other imovie events 1. The second one is my old library that resides on my external thunderbolt drive where I would like to keep it. The iMovie theater folder was also added but inside the Movies folder on my internal drive. I don't want that either.
I usually adopt pretty quickly to iMovie changes but at this point it might have finally pushed me to Final Cut Pro X, to get back that iMovie linear "feel". I can't see anything at all anymore in the new iMovie that shows any time line and ease of use.
    Cheers

  • Bloat in iMovie (iPhoto Library & Events)

I'm trying to get rid of the memory and hard drive bloat in iMovie to hopefully get it running faster.
    1) What is the point of having the iPhoto Library connected to iMovie? It seems like iMovie loads the entire thing which seems like an insane amount of waste.  I'm NEVER going to use anything in iPhoto except once in a blue moon.  Can this be gotten rid of?
    2) I always delete everything from "projects" and all the clips I can see when I'm done exporting so there isn't loads of bloat in the next project.  However, when I click on "All Events" there is one event sitting there with like 25Gigs of crap in it.  I can't open it or do anything with it.  It's just sitting there.  What is this? How do I get rid of it?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi
I would set iPhoto to open a new empty photo library
    - Start iPhoto and keep alt-key down during up-start - select to do a new library
Next time iMovie will start faster
Else a note I made for iDVD - but same goes for iMovie (most of it)
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk for SD-Video Quality and about 4 - 5 times more - if it is a HD-Project.
No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
Do not have more external devices connected as is of urgent need. Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - Or to be disconnected/turned off
Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo
First - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set pointer to this
Secondly - turns on screen saver
Then - to show that it has nothing to show
No File Vault on - Important
NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
if a project is in a real hurry
First - Then Start a new User-Account and
Then - log into this and iMovie get's faster too
And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie projects displaying wrong photos

After upgrading to iMovie 09, my old projects that were "in the works" now display the wrong photos. When I preview the movie, it has the right photos. I don't understand. Even the movies that were finished and put into iDVD now show the wrong photos in the Project window.

I am having the exact same problem. I can't seem to find a workaround, even duplicating the project file gave me the same issue. My best solution is you can make a separate project, drag the photos you want to show into there (with any transitions or effects you want) and then export that project as a separate QuickTime file. Then reimport that newly created movie and it will work because iMovie is reading your "photos" as a movie file now. I did this and it worked for me, even though I admit it's a pain. But at least I didn't have to start my project all over again. Good luck!

  • Imovie quit and i just lost my project... Please help

I was working on a trailer and imovie quit unexpectantly and when I reloaded my project was gone? Please help!! This has happened before but my project was always visible when i reloaded. I also noticed a different project i was working on is not showing up either.

  • Unable to download iMove & iTune updates

I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I am now unable to download iMove and iPhoto updates. I have contacted iTunes and have been told it is a technical problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Worked out what the problem was; evidently Mountain Lion does not like iLife 09 and needs to be updated with iLife11 before it can download. To enable Mountiain Lion to download, iLife11 was installed at the Apple Shop; to access updates I need to purchase iLife11 on my account.

  • IMovie file structure help

    Hi there.
First of all, I cannot confirm whether this is for IMovie '11 or not but I had to choose a version to post.
So I usually work in FCP and a client sends me some footage they had shot. I thought I was getting QT files but what I received was a folder that contained two other folders entitled "IMovie Cache" and "IMovie Thumbnails".
Inside the Cache folder is a QT movie called cache and a file called Cache.plist
Inside the Thumbnails folder are a bunch of files starting with the word "clip" and another IMovie Cache folder which contains different Cache and Plist files than the first "IMovie Cache" folder.
Long story short, I cannot open any of these files and do not want to change them because I know IMovie doesn't like stuff to be moved around. When I try to open the cache.mov files in QT is asks to find the "Clip" (are these the thumbnails?) files but when I navigate to the missing files they will not let be select them.
I'm thinking what I am missing is an IMovie Project file. Is there any way to open these files without with or without IMovie?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like a a partial iMovie Event folder.
Normally, the Event folder would have the video clips (e.g. DV, Apple Intermediate Codec, h.264, etc.) plus it would have the two folders you mentioned. The thumbnails and cache folders are used in iMovie for skimming and other things, but they reference the real clips.
I would ask your client to provide the rest of the folder. This may be quite large depending on what it is.
