Unable to unlock external drive or repair (but can change password)

I have a Freecom 1TB USB 2 external drive with a single partition with Filevault 2 encryption enabled.
The Mac Air detects the drive and prompts for the password to unlock. Prior to this problem it was retrieved automatically from my Keychain (entry still there). An incorrect password immediately gives the window shake. The correct password results in either a prompt to re-enter a password after few minutes or considerably longer.
Disk Utility (run from a standard or admin account or in recovery mode)  appears to Verify and Repair the drive fine, but when the partition is selected I get:
Verifying volume “1,000”
Checking storage systemChecking volume.
disk3: Scan for Volume Headers
Invalid Volume Header @ 0: incorrect block type
Invalid Volume Header @ 999709908480: incorrect block type
disk3 is not a CoreStorage volume
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
The Repair option is not available.
Earlier I was getting an "Unable to examine /dev/disk3: Resource busy" message on Verifying the partition.
Earlier I also got a message in the details of drive Verify or Repair in Recovery mode of "transaction group 12: cksum mismatch", though the final result of the Verify and Repair stated the drive was okay.
Oddly I seem to be able to change the password, but nothing else including switching off encryption. When the later is attempted it appears to accept the password but then stops stating there was a problem (no other details).
I have a second external drive with Filevault2 enabled and this connects fine although a password is prompted for even though I saved it to my Keychain previously.
Suggestions very welcome! Preferrably to fix or if that is not possible ways to potentially retrieve some of the data.

I'll answer my own question, which may help others.
I found no solution and reformatted the drive.
Not sure if my question was poorly worded but after no response I tried one of the main paid support sites. The expert who took up my question didn't seem at first to be aware of encrypting external drives under Lion. No viable solution was found, so I gave up and reformatted the drives.
This is the third time I have had issues with the stability of OSX formatted external drives, so enough is enough. I'm sticking with FAT32 (the 4Gb limit isn't a major problem) for all my drives except my Time Machine drive. No encryption on that drive either.

I have a new windows 7 pc and i want to move my iTunes mediathek (Music, movies) to it. by using an external driver (Hd.). But On the new pc iTunes does Not integrales the Media files.

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you need to do.

I moved my itu nes media to an external drive so that I can access it from either of 2 computers. Now I can't see all my music in the library of the second computer. I was able to add 1 file to the library, but that will be exceedingly tedious to do for the whole list. There must be a better way.

File Add Folder to Library, and point it to the top folder on the external.  That will cause iTunes to add all the files to the library.

    Can anyone help

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Unable to access external drive connected to Mac Pro running Mountain Lion

When I initially connect, it is accessable and I am able to back up to it.  But after a few weeks, it no longer allows changes.  It is still mounted, and I can see the directories on it, but can no longer write to it.  I was told by the folks at G-drive that this is a known problem with Mountain Lion.  I really need my drive to stay available....I notice that there is an update to 10.8.4, but before taking my FM Pro Server offline, I'd like to know if the update will fix the problem.
    Thanks.

I don't know if it's the same problem, but in the last few weeks we have had that happen on two machines running Snow Leopard and one running Lion 10.7.5.  In our case, it always involves Time Machine, and the FW external FW drive becomes read-only for no apparent reason and despite the fact that Command+I reveals the user "can read and write" to the drive.  Running Apple's disk utility to Repair Disk a few times usually fixes it.
It's just infuriating. Ever since Leopard came out with Time Machine I had had that intrusive, obnoxious utility permanently disabled. I enabled it in Lion, and I've disabled it again.

  • External drive is visible but...

I was fooling around seeing what permissions I had set for my external drive and switched the permissions from my user name (admin with my login name) to system, thinking that when I switch from PPC to Intel the Intel would read my drive. Well, now the drive is mounted, and I can see my folders but no files appear. When I try and change my permissions back I get error code 213.
This happened once before but the drive couldn't be seen on the desktop but was mounted. I remember going into Terminal or having to delete a pref. file?
I'm trying to backup my files onto the drive so when i make the switch I can pull my files off the external to the Intel macbook pro.
    Thanks

I'm not sure to exactly understand your message, but I can help you getting good permissions for your whole drive again, using Terminal.
Assuming the user from which you want to use your disk is joe, and is in the administrators group, you can do the following :
    sudo chown -R joe.admin /Volumes/myVolume
    sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \;
    sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \;
This should set some standard rights to every file in the disk.
If this is a system disk, things are more complicated and I would treat each folder case by case, but repairing permissions with disk utility is a good start.

  • Unlockable External Drives

I have 2 1.4 TB external drives attached to an intel macmini running snow leopard server.  For some reason today, the server started to display a bunch of error message when I was trying to copy a folder.  So I restarted, only to get a grey screen with the rotating grey beach ball.  Booted off the dvd and ran disk utilities, which seemed to fix things, or so I thought.
I lost all user accounts except primary admin.  filemaker server trashed as is addressbook server.  Open directory gone too.  [I have a DVD that I store software on, but now the DVD is unreadable on the mac mini (and imacs as well).  It was always readable.]
Worse yet, external drive Backup_A (connected via firewire to mac mini) is locked and says I don't have permissions to see contents.  It is the clinic's central time machine drive for the mac mini server and the 3 other imacs.  The 2nd external drive Backup_B (connected via usb to  mac mini)  backs up Backup_A drive.  I also have an older 500 GB TimeCapsule that I just started to use to backup Backup_B.  While I can seem to retrieve all critical data files, all 3 drives have the little "locked" icon.  Get Info on each drive has no unlock checkbox.  Trying to change sharing and permissions via Get Info is ineffective.  Using terminal commands (cd /Volumes then chflags -R nouchg Backup_A) is ineffective as I get error statements telling me I do not have permission.
Before I erase all drives and start over I'd, well, NOT want to erase anything.  Zillions of TM backup are within my reach.
This is a REAL pain.  Suggestions?

    Thanks, but problem remains.

"Have you tried to edit ACL or posix with Server Admin ? ...Go to File sharing (when server name is selected) and select Volumes and Browse from the tabs. Now browse your way to the drive you want to set permissions to. You should instantly see the applied ACL and POSIX on the bottom of the screen. Whats going on there? It could help if you could post and tell what do you see there? Gray accounts? No accounts at all?"
Tried that before I posted on discussions.  Probably should have said that before.  Sorry.  All permissions are listed as custom.  Every time I try to SAVE permission changes from custom to full control or add a new user with admin permissions, permissions return to custom.  I lost all accounts in workgroup manager except primary administrator.  I then recreated all accounts, but that seemed to have no effect.
"If you can't re-create the permissions as they were. Try at least adding the server admin user to the ACL, full control, all files and folders all descendants, and then remember to save and propagate permissions. Use the small gear button on the bottom and select Propagate permissions."
As before, "saving" erases any changes I just tried to make.
"Hope you get this fixed. First, investigate, if you find something weird from the server admin, post it here, it might help to get better understanding of what has happened."

"Again I would boot from CD and do a time machine restore."
I'm afraid I cannot do a TM restore as you suggested because the firewire TM disk is locked and I cannot seem to unlock it.
    Summary So Far
I'm getting the impression that it may be easier (and safer) to erase the mac mini HD and do a full reinstall. Especially so since I have copies of critical data, obtained in a somewhat ham handed fashion.  I'll await any advice you may proffer.  I understand that "techies" (please take no offense) like to dive into fix this, the fix that stuff, but it seems an erase and install from a dvd is easy.  Besides, its not like we're in the bad old days of installing FoxBase from 25 floppies.  Thank God for that.
Again, I look forward to your advice ... Mike

  • Mac os unable to format external drive

I am unable to reformat Seagate Free Agent Pro external drive used for Time Machine backup. Disk Utility gives error msg; "Couldn't unmount disk." I attempt to initialize an identical external drive and receive the same message. Any ideas?

    Drive Erase for Lion/Mountain Lion
    1.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select the volume you wish to erase from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Backing up Events on an external drive... but FCP don't like it ??...

I connected an external drive on my Mac mini for dual purpose of:
    1) backing up Events (captures from DV tape camera), especially that I cannot work will all projects in mind at same time... And capturing a 63 minutes DV tape takes... 63 minutes !!... So don't want to redo it over and over again, should something happen on the working HDD...
    2) Eventually store ''finished projects'' with all their files to free up space on working disk.
However, it looks like FCPX becomes a little mixed up at opening (''cannot open event twice'' kind of message, as it sees it on both drives).  Unfortunately, it will open (for some of the events) the version on the USB2 drive... which is not the one from which I want to create, edit, and finalize, of course.
The only turnaround I found was to disconnect the USB drive before launching FCPX ...
Can't believe there's not a way to set FCP to use from the main HDD in some settings or so ?
(I also read in a tutorial not to copy files other than doing that from ''inside FCP'' - In this case, I recognize I did the backup manually outside of FCP... But yet: this is aimed to be a backup of Events (not yet linked to a project).  I can foresee it could become a nightmare once events will be linked to a project...
What would be the ''best practice'' in what I aim to do (2 objectives above ?)
    Thanks,
    Rob

However, the idea of a backup here is not to ''use'' the backup to edit/finalize, so I don't think USB2 will make any difference (except taking longer to backup/re-import.  I just returned a so-called Thunderbolt LaCie RuggedUSB3 that claimed to do 10GB/s but took over 5 minutes to transfer 12 GB !!... (Tried it at Apple Store and it took 3:06 minutes to transfer 30GB, which in my maths does ... 10GB per minute (I can afford a ''margin'' but... 60 times more sounds to me like ... a **very big** margin. So I did not judge the drive worths $200 to gibe me a TB storage at that speed when I can get a USB drive at a fraction of that price. (Just my statement of the day )
You need to temper your expectations... no drive today can do 10GB/s - and even 10GB a minute may be only theoretical. Plus, remember that many factors may be involved. The bottleneck may be in the processor, the bus and, of course, your internal drive. A Ferrari stalled in rush hour traffic goes as fast as the next car...
A regular hard drive in a USB3 box is mor likely to be limited in throughput by the drive itself, not the connection; but with USB2, it's the other way around: the connection is slower than the drive.

  • Unable to access external drive.

I'm a newbie to macs. Tried to use my Maxtor One Touch III USB external hard drive which had previously been my windows backup drive, on my new mac. Copied all the files to the mac, reformatted it with Mac Extended and then copied the files back over to the drive. Everything was fine until I installed the "proper drivers" for the Maxtor drive and now the drive isn't recognized at all by the mac. A call to maxtor revealed that the USB drive is not supported on mac. My question is is there any way to "uninstall" these new drivers I installed and revert back to the native mac driver that originally recognized the drive? Any other ideas?

Congrats on the new iMac 24" and welcome to Apple Discussions... you've come to the right place.
Have you tried doing a search for the external drive software (drivers)? If not, click the round (blue or gray) icon top right of your screen, that is Spotlight. In the drop down search field type in the name of the software. Hopefully it will return the names of the files and where they are. If you locate the Maxtor files, drag them to the Trash.
If you get that far... go here and download a new driver for Macintosh:

  • External drive use for Time Machine change to "Read Only"

I have an external hard drive set up for backing up with Time Machine on my Mac. It has been working well. Now when time machine tries to back up it tells me the external disk is read only. The hard drive does mount to the computer and will let me open the Time Machine folder. When I am in disk utility it also sees the external hard drive but will not let me click on repair disk permissions. Under the drive info's sharing & permissions window it said " You can only read." , After unlocking everything is grayed out, but the permission is set to read & write. Any thoughts on how to get this drive back to read and write? Its a 2TB drive with 1.79TB on disk. The drive has not been ever used on a windows machine or use on any other computer and is use only for  Time Machine backups. One day it was read/write next day read only. Thanks!

The backup drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
You should start another backup now, on another drive, if you don't already have one. One backup is never enough to be safe.
If you choose to keep using the problem drive, turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane, then launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run Repair Disk. This operation may take several hours. If the volume can't be repaired, you'll have to erase it and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least one other complete backup. Remember to turn TM back ON.

  • Startup disk "Not mounted", needs to be repaired but can't get it to mount

I did a Verify Disk because my HD has been having issues. It told me I needed to backup and reformat, so I went ahead and backed everything up and went to DU in recovery mode.
But when I got there, my Macintosh HD showed up as "Mount Point: Not Mounted", so I did the following:
I clicked on the Macintosh HD from the list and clicked "Mount". It gives me the following:
    Mount failed
The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then try mounting.
So I click "Verify Disk" and it gives me this:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So I go to click Repair Disk but it's grey and cannot be selected, I assume because my drive is not mounted.
So how can I'm in a paradox and REALLY need help with getting my startup drive mounted again. Can anyone help?
Let me know if I can provide more info for troubleshooting and thank you in advance!

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
