Unable to Unlock External Hard Drive w/ Correct Password

Specs
Retina MacBook Pro
Mac OS 10.9.4
Encrypted External Hard Drive with Time Machine application
Issue
I’m not able to unlock my ext. hard drive with the password stored in Keychain Access or by manually entering the password. When I plug my ext. hard drive on another computer the password works just fine.
I also noticed that when unlocking the ext. hard drive with an incorrect password the window will shake. When I unlock using the correct password it'll stall for about 10 seconds before it shakes. I’m not sure if that’s an indication of anything.
I formatted the ext. hard drive and encrypted it again. It works fine for a little bit before the same issue crops up again and the same password no longer unlocks the external hard drive. Again, it’ll unlock just fine on another computer.
Steps I've done so far in attempt to resolve the issue:
Keychain First Aid
Reset My Default Keychain
Repaired Disk Permission
Unlocking via Disk Utility
Formatting the external hard drive
Help!
I’ve come to the conclusion that it must be related to Keychain Access, the OS, or something else on my computer that’s preventing me from unlocking it. Does anyone have any clue why this is happening and what I can do to repair the issue?

Hi Kevin,
Its "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)" and its partitioned
kind regards,
thanks

  • Unlocking external hard drive that was locked with time machine

I use a MBP Retina (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.9.4.  I left the MBP at Apple for repair and they changed the mother card and reformatted my HD (SSD).  Since I had a backup on a WD My Passport external drive I was not too worried to restore.  I had clicked the option "password protected" on TM and therefore the external HD was password protected.  I also copied pasted many files on the same external hard drive, in case TM would fail one day to operate I thought that I would still have my files ...
But I was very surprised that when I plugged in my external HD into my MBP it didn't recognize it at all.  The external HD did not appear on the screen anymore.  Nor in Finder.  It appeared in Disk Utility but it could not be mounted.  Basically it was impossible to access my data.  After a while and talking with Apple Support on the phone we could reach a point where a window appeared asking me the password for the access to the HD.  Unfortunately it didn't work.  The .  password was not recognized.  Even though we had selected the right country with the icon upper right on the screen to make sure that we used the correct keyboard.
So finally I reinstalled completely the OSX (coming rom Lion all the way to the last OSX) on the MBP and finally I could restore it with my TM.  I spent three days on this since it only worked with one OSX - don't remember honestly which one -  and not the last one.  Don't know why.
    Anyway.
Today I have my MPB working but I miss all the files that are still on my external HD because I cannot access to it anymore.  As I said the recovery happened all of a sudden with TM with a former OSX and not the 10.9.4.  With this current OSX my HD does not appear on the desktop nor on finder. Nothing.  It is locked by TM and I cannot even key in the password to unlock it.  Useless to say that I have the password.
Any idea how to sort this out please ? Thanks

This might work. Courtesty of V.K.:
run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

  • Unable to erase external hard drive with Disk Utility

Macbook Pro (mid 2010) running 10.9
    Hello
Recently, my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB external hard drive has not been showing up on my desktop or in finder.  The light is on when connected, and in the Disk Utility it appears.
    1.  It was naturally created with a partition on it (all of the 1TB allocated to it) and it appears in the Disk Utility as well; however, it is grayed out.
    2.  I clicked the actual drive in DU and it was verified as being ok.  I clicked on the partition next to verify and it said "Error disk needs repaired"
    3.  So I clicked repair, "Disk Utility cannot repair the disk..restore as many as your backed-up files...etc."
    4.  No problem (the data on the hard drive is used for my Time Machine back ups and my current internal hard drive is working fine with all the data intact)
    5.  Ok, so I click the erase tab on the entire external hard drive...erase..."Disk cannot be unmounted"
    6.  Ok, I try to erase the invidual partition..."Could not open disk"
It seems every time I try to erase this drive completely im hitting blocks.  I even tried this method from the OS X Recovery menu (Command+R on startup).  I would greatly appreciate any help to just get this whole thing external hard drive erased and start anew.  How else would I go about this?
    (pictures for reference)
    Thank you all

If this is your only backup device, you need to start a new backup on another drive immediately. Don't erase (or try to erase) your only backup.
After you have the other backup, boot into Recovery and try again to erase the volume. You will have to unlock it before you can do anything with it, because it's encrypted.
If you still can't erase it, the drive has failed.

  • External hard drive asks for password and does not mount on desktop

    Hello all,
I bought a portable FireWire external hard drive to connect to my iMac G4. When connecting via FireWire, a message window appears telling me that the external disk is password protected and prompts me to type a password. Neither typing my administrator password nor activating the checkbox "Temporarily remove protection" and clicking the Unlock button is successfull: the hard drive does not appear on the desktop but it is listed in the System Profiler under Fire Wire Bus. I tried the external drive on an iMac G5 where it works without any problem. So what shall I do? Does anybody know an issue to this? I will be glad for every answer.

Have you written any data to the external drive? If not, perhaps you could add some data.
    Are you using filevault?
You could reformat it in disk utilities.
    Here is the path...
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
It may be a problem with accessing the drive from different users, I could not recreate the problem with different users on my machine. I have only one machine with firewire.

  • Unable to boot external hard drive

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 ghz and I am trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on it using an external Iomega hard drive (there currently is no Superdrive in the PowerBook - I have one coming).  The PowerBook recognizes the external HD and the "gear" runs for a bit and then the machine restarts.  This happens each time it attempts to run off the external HD: recognizes the external HD, Apple symbol and "gear", then restart.
Any suggestions on how to overcome this issue?  Many thanks.

The PB restarts, but does not go to the internal HD as it is just formatted - there is no OS on it.
It came from a DVD and I copied the image locally to my iMac using Disk Utilities and then put it on the external HD using the Restore feature in Disk Utilities.  I have also tried it using SuperDuper, as that has a visible check point to me that shows that the drive is bootable and I had gotten an error on Disk Utilities at the end about allocation of memory, which I understand is common.  I cannot recall for sure the exact sequence, but that is the general approach.  It was trial and error for a bit.
The external HD is recognized at start up when connected (via Firewire).  However, I have also tried to initiate the install sequence via Options.  It is recognized, select it and it exhibits the behavior referenced above.
I have another PB (15" 1.67 ghz) and have attempted to see what happens there and I get the exact same behavior.  I suspect it is an issue the the external HD.

  • Unable to format external hard drive

so I'm trying to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I bought a 2.5 inch hard drive and a caddy to transfer the data with.
according to the internet, I had to "erase" it, first. which is fine. but every time I try to erase it, it says "file system formatter failed", and the disk isn't recognised by OSX (although it does appear in Disk Utility).
    what  can I do?

When you look at it in DU, select the device (starts with the size in GB or TB, then some alphanumeric jibberish, left justified in the column). Choose Partition, and partition Mac OS Extended (journaled) and GUID partition table (may need to select that under Options... I forget). Name your partition (I'll assume you just want one), then press Apply. When DU has finished partitioning, another entry should appear indented a little below the device - with the name you gave your partition. You should be able to select this partition and then use Erase to erase the partition. Report back if this doesn't work.

  • Backing up iTunes to External Hard Drive AND burned DVDs/CDs

    Hello.
I want to back up my iTunes library.
I realize that if I want to back the library up to an external hard drive, all I have to do is copy the entire iTunes folder and paste it on to my external hard drive. Correct?
Assuming that is correct, and now I want to back the library up on DVDs, do I need a DVD burner to do so?
Also, I have about 6,200 songs in my library. using CDs, can someone give me an estimate of how many CDs I would need to back up my library?
I know it's a lot, but I'll buy them online and just wanted a ball park figure.
    10/50/100/500 CDs?
    Anyone know?
    Thanks.

    Casper,
OK. I understand now. I thought that if I was to back up my iTunes library, that I was backing it up as data and would be able to hold hundreds of songs, or something.
But I think your math is wrong, is I misunderstand.
Let me break it down and tell me if I'm wrong.
    6200 songs.
    4 mins per song (average)
    6200 multiplied by 4 = 24,800 minutes.
24,800 minutes divided by 80 (per CD) = 310 CDs.
    No?
So to save my iTunes library, I'd need 310 blank CDs?

  • External Hard Drive setup help

I recently posted about my ipod having more memory than my desktop 20g vs 8g. I bought an external hard drive to correct this problem.
Since I couldn't transfer my library correctly - it told me it was synched with another library and I couldn't get by that - I just removed/erased everything (itunes from C drive, E drive, and library) and started over - I didn't have that much loaded on the ipod, so it's a pain but I thought it would be easier.
The problem is when I downloaded itunes again, I made sure the directory said E drive to keep it on the EHD, not the normal C drive, but everything is still showing up on the C drive in the My Music folder.
How do I make it so itunes and my library exist on the EHD and not the C drive? I only have one CD and one purchased song reloaded so if I have to start over again I won't put my head through the wall.
    Thank you.
    Dell   Windows XP

I appreciate your help. I'm going to start from the beginning because I'm still missing something and I'm just about to give up.
I have a 200+ cd collection. I thought it would be really cool to be able to carry the entire collection around with me so I bought a 4th gen ipod (20gig) off of ebay. I had no idea I had to synch it with a computer. I knew you could but I didn't know it required this. I thought I could burn the cds on the ipod, grab it, and go.
My computer is a couple years old and has 8 gigs of memory. I quickly realized that my entire desktop would be full of mp3 files and nothing else. I bought an external hard drive (80 gig) to hold all of the music, plus whatever else I wanted to store. Here the problems begin.
After much aggravation, I uninstalled itunes and started over. I've changed the directory to the E drive, per the article, and consolidated the library. I then deleted all itunes from the C drive - except it won't let me delete the itunes helper folder for some reason.
I imported a cd as a test run. The cd shows up in the library - on both the E drive and the C drive, which means I've done nothing about the memory issue and I now have two separate libraries - E drive is powered and plugged in. In other words, it won't consolidate to the E drive.
A separate issue, my ipod wouldn't synch with the test import cd. I decided to start over with that as well and restored to factory settings. I thought, okay, I'll restore and then synch with the test cd. I'll lose what I already have on there, but I'll just reload. It tells me I have to connect to the external power source to complete the restore, but I did not get a cable for the external power source when I bought it, so now I have to go and get that as well.
Sorry this is so long. This has been a bad idea from the very beginning, I can see that now. I'm out over $200 and I'm even further from my goal than when I started. Is there any way to fix all of this?
    Thank you.

  • Password protection for external hard drive

is anyone aware of a good, reliable program which allows you to protect data on your external hard drive with a password?

Actually, there's really no reason to make the disk image the size of the whole hard drive. It would make it convenient in a way, since the disk image would have plenty of room on it, but it would also make backups a major pain in the arse, since one minor change to one file inside the image file means the whole thing has to get backed up. If you've got a 150 GB drive, that means a change to a 4 k file requires that you back up 150 GB. (And where do you back up several incremental backups of a 150 GB file to, anyway?)
What I would recommend is to use many smaller disk images. For example, if you've got 10 projects on the drive, each taking up, say, 150 MB, then you could make 10 disk images that are 200 MB (or more or less, depending on anticipated growth of the projects), and put the files for each project inside one image. Change one project, you only have to back up one image file, which is only a fraction of the total size of the drive. Even if you made each image file 1 GB -- an order of magnitude larger than the project files -- it would still be something you could easily back up onto a DVD, and all 10 disk images would still only take up less than 7% of a 150 GB drive.

  • External hard drive protection

this question doesn't relate to this particular forum, however, the "Post message" link is not showing up in the relevant categories. 2 ?'s: (1) is anyone else experiencing this issue (where you can post a new message in certain forums, but not others) and (2) whether anyone is aware of a reliable, safe software program which allows you to protect your external hard drive with a password?

Once you get to the iMac discussion area, then you need to select a sub area depending on which iMac you have.
For example, if you have an iMac G5 you would look under the title "iMac G5", find "Expanding your iMac G5" and click on it. This will take you to this area where you can post new questions.

  • HT201514 Trying to back up Time Machine to My Passport Air external hard drive, which is supposed to be compatible with my iMac and Mountain Lion, but get the message: Unable to complete backup.  An error occurred while creating the backup folder.  Help!

Hello, I've just bought a Mac compatible Passport Air external hard drive, which is supposed to be compatible with the OS I am using (Mountain Lion) but I keep getting an error message saying Unable to complete backup.  An error occurred while creting the backup folder.  I've tried all the help suggestions, but nothing with this actual message comes up - it appears to be partititioned correctly etc, so don't know what I'm doing wrong - any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Were you not plugged in via USB to begin with?
I would recommend performing some resets just to be on the safe side. Unplug the external HD, and try these steps:

  • Missing files on external hard drive and unable to delete items in trash

When my external hard drive is connected I am unable to eject it because it says it is in use. I have tried shutting every program, but the message still occurs. I have also noticed that I can't empty my trash can when the external hard drive is connected, and that it appears empty when it is ejected. There are also missing folders on the drive. I am able to see the timemachine backup folder, but I can't open it properly to access the data.

With the External HD connected to the AEBS, I went to File -> New -> Folder and named the folder. I had done this a few times, as well as created a few new ones using Picasa and cutting/pasting them into the appropriate folder. I did that a few times. Then one more time I went to File -> New -> Folder on the EHD (not Picasa), named it and hit enter. I got a message saying can't do it because folder doesn't exist. Properties showed correct amount of GB used/remaining. so I know it's there. Latrer I connected directly to PC and folders were there and could be manipulated. I tried reconnecting EHD to USB hub in AEBS and it won't show up as a drive under Computer, but under Network -> <AEBS name> -> drive name.

  • Unable to copy or backup to external hard drive

    Friends,
I just bought a new imac 27 i7 with 3TB fusion drive.  Running Mavericks.  I also bought a 4TB OWC quad-interface elite pro external hard drive.  I am trying to use TM to create a backup on the OWC.  The computer spontaneously and randomly will unmount/eject the hard drive, thereby interrupting the backup process.  I know that the HD is able to write data because I used Superduper to copy data from my old (Mavericks) imac to the OWC without incident.  I then copied the files I wanted from the OWC to the new imac.  Copying files from the HD to the new machine occurred w/o any problems.  I then partitioned the HD to use it as a backup for the new machine.  There are two partitions.
I called Applecare and they were unable to provide solutions.  I tried manually copying folders and files, specifically Aperture and FCPX folders, and I received an error -36 message, whatever that means.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I think the problem is that certain drives and certain files might have trouble copying.  The OS's response is to disconnect immediately, rather than remain on-line and risk a broader corruption problem.  If my theory is correct, it's not a bad idea, but it would be good if it was publicized.
FYI, I switched to a Lacie drive and everything works fine.

  • I am trying to save a doc. to a external hard drive and it wont allow me. I says its read only, any ideas on how to correct it?

I am trying to save a doc. to a external hard drive and it wont allow me. I says its read only, any ideas on how to correct it?

Save it on the internal HD then copy it from this safe location to the external device.
iWork applications can't apply their save process on devices which aren't formatted as HFS+.
But it may also be that for some reason, an external device formatted as HFS+ is set to Read Only.
If it's this case, you will have to change de setting before moving the file on it.

  • "unable to open project file" on external hard drive

I see other users had this same issue, but I read all the relevant posts and they haven't helped me. basically, I created and saved a project (along with all scratch disks) on an external hard drive. then, when I closed the project and re-opened it, it was "unable to open project file." however, it looks like all the project files are still on the hard drive (capture scratch, autosave vault, etc.) so seems like this should be redeemable. what can I do?
thank you in advance, you are angellic!

What is the exact message? Try copying it to your computers system drive and opening it? What about in the Autosave vault? Look in there for the last backup, try opening that.
