Unable to unlock folder via "Get Info uncheck Locked"

Hi, a folder I am trying to remove (stored on the Time Machine hard drive) is for some reason locked, and, I am unable to unlock it by unchecking the Locked check box. It momentarily becomes unchecked, then, half a second later becomes checked/locked again. Any suggestions?

(Also...quick question: is there a way to add a comments column to files viewed in iTunes, similar to the columns for date, musician, last played, etc....?)

The folder is on the Time Machine hard drive, the physical drive within the TM Capsule; it is not within the Time Machine backup image.
I'm using the hard drive of TM Capsule as an external drive accessible by all computers on a wireless network...is this okay??
Sorry about the confusion. The TM Capsule hard drive has files and folders similar to the following:
Photos
Font Library
computername1_001b6312312322.sparsebundle
computername2_001b6312311231.sparsebundle
computername3_001b63121232222.sparsebundle
PersonalStuff
SharedStuff
z_erase
Inside z_erase I placed the folders I would like to unlock and delete. I cannot move them to the Trash...they came from other folders like PersonalStuff or Photos, not TM sparsebundles.

Why can't I choose the application version via "get info" in the finder anymore

Upgraded to Maverick and installed Indesign CC 2014 only to find Suitcase has not kept up with an upgrade so fonts are not opening. I would like to use Indesign CC (9.2.2) until the font issues are resolved but cannot choose the application version via "get info" in the finder anymore (it just reverts back to CC 2014 when I select CC). I prefer not to uninstall CC 2014 but will if that is the only option.

We don't overwrite your apps so you can keep previous workflows. . Delete apps you don't want when you are ready.

Unlockable file and 'Get Info' doesn't work

I have a file from an existing external hard drive that I brought over to my new Mac Mini. I can not delete or unlock this file. When I do a Command I (get info) the finder/desktop just flashes and no menu comes up. Therefore I can't uncheck the 'locked' box. I can't move it to the trash either.
The file is a Shockwave Plugin from OS 9 (ShockwavePlugin.class). I'm on a Mac Mini core duo, running 10.4.7
I've searched everywhere on here and can't seem to find a solution. I even tried using TextEdit and saving a new file with the same name as the locked file (to replace it) and TextEdit won't allow me as it says the file needs to end in ".rtf"

First off, thank you for such a quick reply.
I just tried doing what you suggested, hit run, and then in the bottom of the menue (below in the window where I pasted what you said to run) it says 'false'
I then tried to move the file to the trash and it won;t allow me. The eror message I get says "the operation cannot be completed because the item "ShockwavePlugin.class" is locked.
Does this tell you anything more?

I can't enable the ownership of my back-up volume via get info. Any other suggestions?

Hi people, My external hard drive is not working well. When I try to make a time-machine back up a window pops up: ‘Mac-OSX can’t repair the disk. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can’. So now I am trying to copy my back-up files to another disk so I can reformat it. But when I try to do that, the following text appears: The backup files can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled. The problem is that I can’t enable the ownership of the back-up volume.

You may be able to restore individual items, or even an entire backup, as long as you don't happen to hit the damaged area(s). But yes, your only real option is to erase the disk and start over. When you do that, you might want to take the time to have Disk Utility write zeros to the entire disk (see section (b) in the blue box of #1 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how to do that) -- if that fails, you know the disk itself is failing and must be replaced. If it succeeds, the drive may be ok.

You probably don't know yet what caused it. If it's the disk failing, obviously you need a new one. Other things that can cause disk corruption are power blips, being disconnected improperly, or your Mac crashing or losing power while the disk is connected, especially during a backup.
For power problems, the best solution is a U.P.S. (battery backup) system. A good surge protector will protect against power spikes, but not dips or sudden loss of power.
I allready tried several times to change ownership with Get Info but I can’t. I don’t see a checkmark and the

Is there a way to embed a caption into an image file using Preview, or by using the Get Info box? Get Info can read captions already embedded, e.g. using Photoshop, but is there a way I can put in a caption without spending $$$ to buy Photoshop?

What exactly do you mean by "embed"?
If you mean write it to the IPTC metadata: you can do this with iPhoto and many, many other apps that are a lot less expensive than Photoshop
If you mean add text to the surface of the Photo: Yes you can do this with Preview and many, many other apps that are a lot less expensive than Photoshop

"Get Info" seems Locked

On certain albums, I cannot add content info.
When I go to Get Info on an entry, (like "year" etc.), the fields are all “grey” & it will not let me enter any of the fields.
Is there a place to “unlock” that area so that I can enter the data?

Examples for when it does not work "normally":
If I try to change the data for the entire album, (like the album art), I copy & paste the photo where it belongs, (I have done this often successfully). However, when it is "locked", the "update bell" goes off immediately & the photo does not get entered. Normally & when it is working correctly, the data is entered, I say go, iTunes does it calculations, (like assigning the album art I just copied to each of the songs in that album), & THEN the bell rings.
So, trying as you suggested, I will highlight just the songs for the album, & the fields come up grey.
Then I try it with just one/two/whatever song - same...grey, (for all of the fields).
There have been instances when I can change the data, (remove song numbers, change spelling, add a date, change the Album Artist etc), where I can do that, yet when I try to add the Album Art, it will not let me, (see above).
A clue?
All of my files in Explorer are by Artist, with their albums as individual sub-directories. I do not let Apple arrange my files as I do not like the way they file things. Unable to unlock iPhone 5 while phone is locked in VoiceOver mode.

Used the accessibility VoiceOver feature for playback while driving. Was unable to unlock phone. Pressing the triple-click feature did not work. The timeout feature disabled the phone from 1 to 60 minutes with each unsuccessful pass code attempt. Dreading having to reset my phone I connected to iTunes. I was able to turn off the VoiceOver feature using the configure universal access feature and unlock the phone.

I own my iPhone 5 since it first came out in fall of 2012. I have never had an issues with the phone dropping WiFi until last month when two weeks into my biling cycle I have received notification from my carrier that I've burned through 75% of my 2G data plan. At first I thought that maybe I have left some apps running and didn't pay attention to what was occuring. So during the next billing cycle which started 10 days ago, I reset the cellurar data usage legend on the phone and kept a close eye on data usage. My phone is on wifi 99% fo the time. When I am not of wifi I only refresh my email account and check the weather. Prior to the last month, I usually use about half a Gig a month. As I've tracked my data usage with my carrier this current cycle, I found there are numerous cellular data usages during the time that I was connected to wifi. I find myself turning off my cellular data which is ridiculous. I know it's not my router, because when I used my friend's wifi, the phone still registered cellular data usage. It was all small amounts during each time, but 10 days into my billing cycle and my phone burned to 1G of data!! I still have 3 weeks of cycle to go. I've also completely rebooted my phone by erasing and reinstalling the iOS. Which btw, did not help. I cannot believe that others have reported this issue and Apple hasn't addressed it yet. The phone seems to be dropping wifi when in sleep mode. This is not normal as I've owned the phone for over a year and haven't had any troubles until last month. Does anyone have any updates on how to deal with this issue without replacing the phone?

I can't rename songs on my Iphone 4, "get info" seems locked

If any one has any advice on how to rename songs using itunes (or other software).
Songs are from a different computer which I don't have access to any more.

'Get Info' command locks up iTunes 8.2

Whenever I use the command 'Get Info' (which I do often), iTunes locks up. Doesn't matter if I use the mouse, keyboard shortcut or the menu command, iTunes will lock up.
Any suggestions out there? It's getting very frustrating.

Sounds like the songs are Read Only or you do not have Write permsisions to the songs or the folder they are in.

The unlockable folder from hades

Today I was unloading images from my digital camera and some how I have created the unlockable folder. Tried calling apple help line and tried the traditional methods to unlock it via get info and unitilies but the little creep won't go away. Desperate help urgently needed.
My computer had an issue with the camera and it somehow deleted all the images at the same time and this has some how born this devil file. Please help!!!!

Not sure if this solution is related to the issue you're seeing or not, but I've been experiencing the same type of problem on all my FAT32-formatted external drives, and have figured out a way to fix it.
First you need a Windows machine (or virtual machine, which is what i used -- i have Windows XP running in a Parallels vm) to connect the drive to. Once connected, go to the Start Menu, Accessories, bring up a Command Prompt, and go to the parent directory of the locked folder. In my case, the locked folder was "My Pictures", so we'll use that as our example.
Type the following at the command prompt:
1. attrib "My Pictures" (notice it shows an 'R' for read-only)
2. attrib -r "My Pictures" (this will remove the read-only attribute)
Now if you reconnect the drive to your Mac, you'll see the folder is no longer locked.
I tried everything I could to remedy the problem using Mac utilities, but even root user couldn't touch the folder. This solution worked perfectly for me, though -- hope it does the same for you. Good luck!

Get Info folder size is incorrect/too large

I am getting an incorrect report from the Get Info command that one the folders in my 8TB array is topping 15TB! In fact, this folder only contains data (Red movie files) that amount to about 800GB total. This problem, in turn, is preventing me from copying that directory to a backup drive, as it is seen as being too large, which it is not.
Of course this is impossible, as my array, as mentioned above, is only 8TB. And when I do a Get Info on the array drive icon itself, it reads correctly, listing the Capacity as 8TB, and the Available space at 1.8TB. So, it's just the folders that are being read incorrectly.
I have not enabled or set up Time Machine, so I do not think that is the issue.
I am new to Macs and really have no clue how to remedy this situation.

Since I can't afford to wait for this to be solved, and because I don't know how to solve this issue myself, I've gone ahead and deleted the offending folder, created a new folder with a different name, and re-populated it with output files from Davinci Resolve. In effect, I rendered my project out again from scratch. Unfortunately the same **** thing is happening! I'm creating a populated folder that Get Info reports as being 16 Terabytes, on an 8 Terabyte array!

Folder Lock Box is Gray when get info, so how do I lock folders?

I am logged in as an administrative user on an iBook G4. I'm creating new folders to organize the desktop. When I click on get info, the lock box is grayed out and not an option. How do I repair this or bypass this? Too many items to fit in dock and lock down for students to use easily.

There's no built in way to lock files/folders in OS X. You could use Disk Utility to create encrypted disk images and put the folders in there or you may find something on http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macupdate.com/ . Search for folder lock or lock folder.

ITunes 11 - Get Info greyed out for movies on external drive

With iTunes 10, my itunes movies and TV shows grew to about 1.2TB of data, and I shifted them to an external drive.
I was able to edit the information via 'get info' until upgrading to iTunes 11.
Now all the information, bar the 'five stars' field are greyed out. If I shift a particular movie back to the internal drive, I can edit (genre, for example). Shift away again, get info greys out.
Any advice? It feels like iTunes thinks it has the wrong permissions.

When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder. Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie".

Can't write to Desktop ƒ; contradictory permissions info in the Get Info window

I don't have write permission for my Desktop folder.
In the folder's Get Info window, under Sharing & Permissions, it reports a contradiction: it says "You can only read," and at the same time under Privilege it says I have "Read & Write" access. If try I use the popup menu to change "Read & Write" to something else, it goes right back to "Read & Write" upon releasing the menu. At any rate, "You can only read" is the correct part of the contradictory info.
My account is an Admin account. I am typing the correct password to unlock the fields in the Get Info window. I've tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility, and that didn't help.

Try this. Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, copy & paste this this command into TextEdit, substitute your actual username for the placeholder, copy and paste it into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. So if your username was mike, it would be sudo chown -R mike:admin ~/Desktop
sudo chown -R username:admin ~/Desktop
When the Password: prompt pops up, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. That should do it.
