Unable to unlock iPhone 4 from Telstra

Help desperately needed to unlock iphone my son's iphone before school starts?
I have an iphone 4 bought through telstra a few years ago. The phone is in perfect working order. I gave the phone to my son and also put him on a telstra plan that expired in december (2013). Due to my ever increasing dissatisfaction with telstra, I decided to put him on pre-paid with another carrier (Optus) and I have been having nightmares ever since trying to get the phone unlocked from the Telstra network. Now school is about to start again and I really need him to have this working for safety and security. Here's what I've tried;
2 weeks ago, called telstra and they confirmed that they "unlocked" it and just to follow all the usual instructions in this thread, wait 72 hours etc (see below), no service
72+ hours later plugged in to itunes, nothing. Tried several more times over the next few days, nothing
removed SIM, restarted phone, nothing
went to optus store, removed SIM, inserted other SIM in iphone and it worked
put our SIM in store phone and it worked. Optus said to go back to telstra and repeat the process
went to telstra.com.au/unlock, to try to 'unlock' it again. Followed all instructions, waited 72 hours etc, nothing
repeated the above another 72 hours later, nothing
plugged in to latest version of itunes, backed up, restored default settings, nothing
plugged into different itunes account/computer, nothing
went to the Apple 'about unlocking' page and followed the instructions, nothing
posted help request to Telstra corwdsupport, Telstra emplyee responded with "At this point I would suggest contacting Apple directly and asking them for support. The reason I suggest this is because an unlock request from Telstra is simply us recording the IMEI number, checking its one of ours and then sending it to Apple to process."
After all this, the phone is still locked to Telstra and school starts tomorrow.
Can anyone in the Apple support community offer any insight?
Or can anyone from Apple please respond privately so that I can give further details in order for Apple to confirm whether or not the request to unlock has been received at Apple.
Any help, greatly appreciated.

If you're still connected to Telsta, a Telstra SIM card is still installed in your phone.  Install the correct SIM card from your new carrier. If the phone were still carrier locked to Telstra, you would get a message that the SIM card from your new carrier isn't supported.

Possibly; it depends on where you are and what model of iPhone you're interested in. Call or visit your local Apple Store and ask.

Does buying unlocked iphone from U.S. requires unlocking in india...

Well, the 16GB unlocked iPhone 5 will reportedly cost $649+Tax here (don't know for sure as Apple has not put them on the web site yet).  You cannot buy unless you have a US form of payment, with a US billing address and a US shipping address (they WILL NOT ship outside of the USA).  Or, you could pay for a trip here and buy it in person.  Of course, if/when LTE comes to India, it probably will not work.  And if you need warranty service, you would have to return to the USA to get it as the iPhone warranty is not international.
All that to save about $100, and get a phone that if it has problems, you cannot even get warranty service on?  If the $100 saving is that critical to you, it might suggest you should be shopping for a much cheaper phone in the first place.

  • Taking a new unlocked iPhone from Australia to the USA

    Hi all,
A thorough search of the net has failed to answer this question and I'm hoping you can help. There are a few threads that explore using an unlocked Aus iPhone in the USA but they all seem to deal with phones unlocked from a carrier.
I have bought a new factory unlocked iPhone from Apple Australia. If I insert a local SIM (like a Vodaphone) to get the phone operating in Australia do I need to unlock it to use it in the USA or does it stay unlocked? I would like to remove the Vodaphone SIM and use an American network while I am there.
    Thanks,
    Shannon

No, if it's officially unlocked by the carrier or factory-unlocked from the Apple Store, it will work with an AT&T SIM card here in the US. But, apparently there are some issues with getting pre-paid SIMs from AT&T, so check into that (the only other GSM network in the US is T-mobile, and their 3G network is not compatible with the iPhone, so you're stuck sorting out the SIM issues with AT&T or using EDGE-only on T-mobile.
Also, be aware that iPhone warranty service is only provided in the country of purchase.

I plan to buy an iphone 6 from New York. I am from India and shall be using the phone in India. Is it possible to get an unlocked iphone from the store? If yes, how much would it cost?

It is going to be months before any unlocked iPhone 6s will be available.
Also be aware that the iPhone purchased in the USA will only have warranty service in the USA. Any warranty service will require you to bring it back to USA.

  • Officially unlocked iPhone from Canada in the US

If buy a unlocked iPhone from Canada and want to use it in the states, can i still get warranty services and apple support in the states ?

If you have to get a replacement phone for any reason, you will probably have to get it from Canada. The service replacements stocked at US Apple Stores are locked to AT&T.

  • Unable to unlock iPhone 5 while phone is locked in VoiceOver mode.

Used the accessibility VoiceOver feature for playback while driving. Was unable to unlock phone. Pressing the triple-click feature did not work. The timeout feature disabled the phone from 1 to 60 minutes with each unsuccessful pass code attempt. Dreading having to reset my phone I connected to iTunes.  I was able to turn off the VoiceOver feature using the configure universal access feature and unlock the phone.

I own my iPhone 5 since it first came out in fall of 2012. I have never had an issues with the phone dropping WiFi until last month when two weeks into my biling cycle I have received notification from my carrier that I've burned through 75% of my 2G data plan. At first I thought that maybe I have left some apps running and didn't pay attention to what was occuring. So during the next billing cycle which started 10 days ago, I reset the cellurar data usage legend on the phone and kept a close eye on data usage. My phone is on wifi 99% fo the time. When I am not of wifi I only refresh my email account and check the weather. Prior to the last month, I usually use about half a Gig a month. As I've tracked my data usage with my carrier this current cycle, I found there are numerous cellular data usages during the time that I was connected to wifi. I find myself turning off my cellular data which is ridiculous. I know it's not my router, because when I used my friend's wifi, the phone still registered cellular data usage. It was all small amounts during each time, but 10 days into my billing cycle and my phone burned to 1G of data!! I still have 3 weeks of cycle to go. I've also completely rebooted my phone by erasing and reinstalling the iOS. Which btw, did not help. I cannot believe that others have reported this issue and Apple hasn't addressed it yet. The phone seems to be dropping wifi when in sleep mode. This is not normal as I've owned the phone for over a year and haven't had any troubles until last month. Does anyone have any updates on how to deal with this issue without replacing the phone?

  • Unlocked iPhone from T-Mobile does not work in Switzerland

I'm extremely annoyed. I bought myself a *so called unlocked* iPhone in Germany for 999 Euro and now it does not work with a Swiss SIM card. When I try to make calls via dialing or when i try to read text messages (sms) the phone and the sms application will crash. Calling the different helplines ends up in the same resutls: Apple care blames either Swisscom or T-Mobile, T-Mobile blames either Swisscom or Apple and Swisscom blames Apple or T-Mobile...
In the end however, I can't get rid of the feeling that the problem could be solved by a very simple software update, because I've seen hacker reports on the internet claiming they were able to solve the problem by changing a few settings. I don't want to be forced to hack my legally bought so called unlocked iPhone. *When will Apple set the "unlocked" iPhone really free?*

    Hi Pete,
welcome to the club! A you can see from this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1260589&tstart=0
you are not the only one. It seems as if the T-Mobile unlocked phones work with any German SIM card, but with non from not-Apple supported countries (like CH).
Apple support is aware of the problem, as many of us have called them and submitted bug reports, but it remains to be seen, if Apple is interested enough in "us" to provide a solution.

  • Can we purchase an unlocked iPhone from Apple?

HELLO, I JUST READ THE BELOW ARTICLE IN ONE OF THE iPhone Magazines, and I understand that Apple is selling Un-Locked iPhones. Therefore, does that mean we can purchase it directly from the online Apple store and/or in the stores that we enjoy visit ting and learn all the great info in their WORKSHOPS and One On One appointments.
I appreciate if anyone reading this, has actually witnessed or actually purchase an Un-locked iPhone online or in the Apple stores. If so, please tell me how and where you accomplished your new purchase.
    Respects,
    Tony Magnifico
MacRumors and 9to5 Mac have both confirmed that Apple will start selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 starting on Wednesday, June 15th. Although these rumors surfaced over the weekend, most tech blogs were skeptical since Apple has always frowned upon unlocking (AKA "jail-breaking") their devices to be used with any carrier. The unlocked versions only apply to the GSM versions (the ones compatible with AT&T). Verizon versions of the iPhone (CDMA versions) will still be incompatible with other carriers. This move is poised to benefit T-Mobile, who uses GSM phones, as new users can now sign up with them without having to jail-break the iPhone. If the T-Mobile-AT&T merger goes through, however, it'll end up making little difference to the end-user.
Unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 (in both black and white color) will retail for $649 for the 16GB, and $749 for the 32GB version.

Apple Starts Selling Unlocked iPhone 4s
Submitted by Uncle Tone on 6/22/11 2:45pm
News if you believe all readers are in the U.S.  Sim free and contract free iPhone 4s have been available from Apple without any frowning in many other countries for a year or so. Congratulations to the U.S. for catching up!

Apple IS selling unlocked iPhones 4 via the online store. NOW.  I don't know if all or any of the retail stores sell them yet.
Note that the online store will ship only to a US address and US credit card.  Also, the warranty is valid only in the US.  If you live elsewhere, you'll have to ship it to a US resident to take it for warranty issues - can't direct ship from out of the US.

  • HT201328 Does buying an unlocked iphone from apple disable some features

I am currently looking to get an iphone5 and saw Apple sells unlocked iphones.  I currently have an iphone4 that was an At&t phone but I had them unlock it when my contract expired.  I switched over to Straighttalk and it doesnt allow my MMS features to work on their plan.  Ive tried to switch the MMS settings but nothing worked.  If I was to buy an iphone5 would it work on any system with different sim cards and if I had to change the settings would  I be able to restore them to the way it was when i purchased it in case certain things dont work.  Please help

Yes. The T-Mobile nanoSIM which came with the  full price, unlocked iPhone 5 will work for a prepaid plan. However, neither Apple retail store employees nor the T-Mobile customer svc reps know this. It was quite an ordeal to activate. I had to order the prepaid activation kit online, wait for its arrival by snail mail, then use the activation code from the kit with the nanoSIM to activate the prepaid monthly plan $30/mon for 100 min+ unlim text + 5 GB 4G/LTE. I live in Pasadena, CA, and the 4G and LTE coverage here is extensive and reliable.
I tossed the SIM which came with the activation kit.
My local T-Mobile retail store wouldn't sell me a prepaid activation kit when I told them that I wanted the web-only $30/mon plan. The customer svc reps couldn't or wouldn't give me an activation code to use either.

  • Is unlocked iphone from UK apple retail store the same as from online store

Today I bought an unlocked iphone 4 from my local UK Apple Retail store. I explained to the store assistant that as I work abroad for several months at a time I needed to be able to use my iPhone with both a UK carrier( not sure which one to go with yet), and a local carrier when in another country, therefore I wanted an unlocked sim free one. I bought the 16gig version and payed the full £499 for it, however, when I got home and looked at the receipt it also lists a "No Contract Sim" with a part number but with a unit price of £0.00.
So I am confused..! Is this the same as the sim free iphone available from the online store and can I use it with any carrier by swapping the sim card depending on my needs? Or, is this some other kind of sim card that will lock the phone once I activate it the first time. I had assumed that by paying the full price I was getting an unlocked sim free phone as described on the UK online store description. If it is not, I will need to return it and order one online.

The iPhone could be purchased at full price only at retail stores not online at least in US:
This FAQ can be found on the US site with a little digging (read on to know why digging was necessary)
"Is a new contract with AT&T required?
A new 2-year commitment with AT&T is required when starting your purchase online. Additionally, the Apple Retail Store offers a no-commitment iPhone for the full retail price."
This lines above are the info that you can read in a pop-up FAQ that will appear if you click on one nicely hidden FAQ link, reading: "Is a new contract with AT&T required?", located on the bottom left corner of the ordering process area.
What is misleading is that the FAQs on the landing page where users can select a 3GS or a 4, the FAQ for "Can I buy an iPhone without an AT&T contract?" is answered with a straight "No. iPhone requires a two-year AT&T wireless service contract." Such statement applies only to online store purchases and that's a piece of info that only a more careful, meticulous and OCD reader may find out since another FAQ tucked away elsewhere (read below) says you can buy iPhones at full price by going to any Apple Retail Store.
There is no way for me to give you a direct link to the other FAQ stating that, because it's accessible only during a purchasing session, therefore you'll have to go through the few steps below if you want to read that FAQ by yourself:
    1) Go to the online store,
    2) Select the iPhone image to start the buying process,
    3) Once on the page where you can choose the 3GS or the 4, select one,
    4) On the next page you should see 3 FAQ links (gray text, the bottom left corner),
    5) Click the one that reads: "Is a new contract with AT&T required?",
    6) Read the FAQ in the pop-up that will open after you clicked on the link.
There are no further details about unlocking, jail-breaking or the fact that the iPhone 4 uses a micro SIM instead of a standard or mini SIM card so you may want to ask more info in that regard to a Genius at the Retail Store to learn more about how you can buy an iPhone and use it with another carrier outside US.
If UK and US sales work following the same rules, your iPhone bought online should be carrier-locked, so if you've got one that was unlocked and contract-free from the UK store then either you are lucky guy, or sales in UK are more flexible than US. In both cases what would count is that your phone is unlocked, now the info you may want to get is simply what SIM and Carrier services will work on your iPhone when you are in US.
Best to you and I hope some of these info will help you. Good luck!

  • Hey! when i buy an unlocked iphone from usa, dose it work in romania?

hey! when i buy an unlocked iphone 5 from usa, dose it work in romania?

You'd be better served by purchasing an officially unlocked iPhone 5 in one of the EU countries. Except for the EU, iPhone warranty/support is limited to the country of original purchase. Thus, you won't have any warranty or support, for a US iPhone, where you live. However, if you purchase an iPhone in any EU country, your warranty/support is EU wide. Further, US iPhone 5's do not support LTE in Europe, only the models sold in Europe support such. Given these two issues, doesn't it make more sense to purchase your phone in Europe?
