Unable to update 4.3.3 iOS on my iPod to iOS 5 or 6

Unable to update iOS 4.3.3 to latter version on my iPad which I purchased summer 2011

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

    Hi there Sam R 12,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Unable to update my  iOS on my iPad and iPhone.

I am unable to update my iOS on my iPad and iPhone. Though I have had these devices and have been updating for over a year, the issue just started with this new release (iOS 5.1).
When I connect my Pad and Phone to iTunes (Windows PC with Vista), I am told that an update is available. When I update, iTunes tries to connect to a server. Then I receive the message, "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The network connection could nopt be established."
When I try to update the devices iOS using WiFi directly (not connected to iTunes). The devices say, "Checking for Update..." and does not connect. It says, "Unable to check for update...An error occurred while checking for a software update...Cancel or Try Again"

I solved this by downlading the iOS update via wi-fi at another location other than my home. I would still like to know why this download did not work at my home as it has for over a year. I have made no changes in my firewall or security settings.

  • Unable to update my iphone 4s ios to 5.0.1

    dear friends
im experiencing updating problem rite now. i just bought a 4s for my wife yesterday. when i tried updating the ios to 5.0.1 directly from the phone, it showed - 'Unable to Check for Update. An error occured while checking for a software update. and when i tried updating it via itunes, i got this msg - The iPhone "xxx iphone" could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible.
my internet connection is perfectly ok here. can anybody help me on this?
    Thank you

I was finally able to update from iOS 5.0 (9A334) to iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) on my new iPhone 4S.
(Note: I did not try "Reset" in the Settings>General app on iphone as I only noticed it later. Someone may want to try it)
    Problem:
Firmware file incompatibility error whenever I tried to update through iTunes. Same issue when trying to do a restore through iTunes, as it attempted to first do an iOS update and failed with the same firmware file incompatibility error. A straight restore from back-up  (right clicking the user device in iTunes) did not fix the problem. On the iphone itself, there was an update badge on Settings, but it said my system was already up-to-date when I tried to update over-the-air, even though the version was still 5.0 (9A334).
Solution (that worked for me at least):
Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of  iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
    Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.
I admit it was risky, but I was prepared to head back to the dealer in the morning if the phone didn't reactivate.
I hope this works for you. Good luck!

  • Unable to update apps in iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 5S

I'm unable to update any apps on my iPhone 5S.
Problem started after I updated to iOS version 8.0.0. Oddly, apps updated for a while, then stopped about 2 days ago.
I upgraded to 8.0.2 hoping it would solve the problem. Still a problem.
I receive notifications in the App Store that apps are ready for an update. I go into the App Store and click to "update" on individual apps or "update all". In both cases, the little blue square in a circle loads (looks like it's about to download the update), but no progress indicator shows that it's / they're downloading.
    Have rebooted. No help.
Have signed out and back into the App Store. Didn't fix it.
Turned off Family Sharing. Didn't fix it.
I've attempted to update the apps using 3 different Wi-Fi networks, all of them with a strong signal. Have also tried while tethered to laptop via iTunes.
    Little help?

hi, Brett - I'm having a problem now restarting my iPhone.
iTunes (yep, it's the latest Windows version) keeps crashing ("iTunes has stopped working" message).
The installed apps are blacked out with text beneath the icon "Waiting".
And iTunes crashes on step 4 of 4 (Syncing Apps to John Alton iPhone 5S - step 5 of 5). Starts on the first app it tries to reinstall / sync.
I am manually installing each application because I'm unable to bring back from syn. (On the iPhone, in App Store, go to Purchased > Not on this iPhone,
But I'm still unable to run iTunes because it crashes while attempting to re-load the applications and data.
    Little help?
    thanks,
    John

  • After I downloaded the update of iOS 8.1.3,I was unable to install it and I see "an error occurred installing iOS 8.1.3"what can I do?

After I downloaded the update of iOS 8.1.3,I was unable to install it and I see "an error occurred installing iOS 8.1.3"what can I do?

    Hi Josephineapo,
If you are trying to update your iPhone over-the-air rather than through iTunes, and you are having issues with installing it, then I'd like you to please follow the steps outlined below.
If you get a message that "an error occurred downloading iOS," try again later. If the issue persists, try updating your device in another network or use iTunes to update your device. Learn more about iOS updates.
    Update does not complete
If you're installing the update and the progress bar appears to move slowly, be patient. The time an update takes depends on the size of the update and the number of files on the device.
When you're updating over the air, keep your device connected to a power source so that it doesn't run out of power. If your device does run out of power, connect it to a power source and turn on the device to let the update or restore complete.
If the update never completes and the progress bar hasn't moved for an extended time, try restarting your device. If you still see the issue after you restart, see what to do if your device appears frozen or won't start.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
