Unable to update Genius - "required file cannot be found" error

I am getting an error "Genius results can't be updated right now. The required file cannot be found. Please try again later" when I try to update Genius. I get this error in Step 3: Delivering your Genius results. It gets passed first 2 steps fine.
Seems to have started when I upgraded to Windows 7 and reinstalled iTunes 9.0.3. Upgrading to 9.1 didn't help.
I know there have been many posts about Genius updates issues, but I saw only ones with "network connection timed out" or "Unknown" errors. Required file cannot be found when updating Genius seems new.
Tried deleting iTunes Library Genius and iTunes Library Extras and returning on Genius. Doesn't work. Tried rebuilding iTunes Library, doesn't work.
Any ideas?

I suspect it's Windows 7 permissions. Instead of not being able to find the required file, maybe itunes doesn't have permission to create it or delete it.
I have watched my itunes folder while itunes updates genius. It creates some temporary journal files and then deletes them. If your windows userID doesn't have full control & ownership of the itunes folder, it might be having trouble with these temporary files, or the genius & extra itdb files.
Go into Windows Explorer. Make sure your window userID has *full control* and ownership of the itunes folder and all its subfolders. Be sure to restart itunes after changing permissions, so itunes will read the new settings.
If still no joy, the next step I'd try woud be to temporarily turn off UAC, and see if itunes can update genius.

  • "The iPod **** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" Error

    Hello,
Upon doing a 'zero-all bits' reformatting of my 5G iPod with Disk Utility and using the 'Restore' feature in iTunes 7, every time I sync my iPod with iTunes, I get an error message after the sync in the form of
"The iPod ** cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found"
and photos, contacts, and calendars are not synchronizing. I tried a second 'Restore' attempt but to no avail. Previous to reformatting my 5G iPod, I've not seen this error message.
I would be grateful if someone could offer any clues. Many thanks.

    A little update.
Upon reinstalling iTunes 7, deleting my iTunes-related .plist files, and reparing permissions on my hard drive, I can now sync my contacts and calendars with my 5G iPod.
As for Photos, the "required file cannot be found" error seems to be due to the default setting in the 'Photos' tab, 'Sync photos from:' pull-down menu to 'iPhoto'. If I choose my 'Pictures' folder, photo synchronizing works, albeit including everything in my iPhoto library, including originals and modified versions of the photos.
I can only surmise that the default setting for synchronizing photos is somehow buggy in iTunes 7. I guess I'll just wait for an update.

  • The iPod "iPod" cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.(again)

tTunes recognizes my iPod and I can download the SONGS onto my iPod, but it gives me that message="The iPod 'iPod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." and my videos and photos can't get onto my iPod.

    I have the same problem.
I can update songs just fine.
Ive restored and re-installed ipod and ipod software like a maniac.
    None of those work.
    D:
I'm thinking theres somthing wrong with iTunes creating a new Ipod Cache folder.....
Or it's a system error that happens when any software/hardware is updates (auto or not) or is changed in any form or way!
    (installed, un-istalled or the like)
It prolly needs to fixed manualy.
(not by reinstalling or update-dating ipod software)
If some one could tell me what to do i'll be more than happy to do it.

  • Unable to sync iPad; Required File Cannot be Found

I'm not able to sync my iPad to my Mac. Each time I try to sync I receive the message "The iPad cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found".
I tried the Restore option in iTunes, but continue to have to same issue. I've been syncing the iPad almost every week since I got it and just started about the same time as iTunes was upgraded.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

It seems that your iPod/iPhone/iPad photo cache got corrupted.
    Go to your iPhoto library
Right click and choose show package contents
Delete the folder "iPod Photo Cache"
    Close iPhoto Contents folder
Restart iTunes and re-sync. This should solve the problem.
Your iPhoto library will be re-optimised for syncing to your preferred device.
    Hopes this solves your problem.

  • "required file cannot be found" error message

    hi everybody,
i recently just purchased an ipod video 5th edition. i plugged it into the computer and immediately tried adding my music collection. everything seemed to be working fine until about 20 some odd songs into the syncing process when i got this message: "required file cannot be found". my ipod had completely frozen, responding only to the "menu click wheel" hard reset. so i tried the syncing process again, and again, the same error came up. i tried syncing manually with different songs, but eventually the error came up again. there isn't a specific song that triggers the error.
since then i have tried rebooting, reinstalling itunes, trying different USB ports, and restoring my ipod, but nothing has worked. at this point, my patience is running out and i have no idea what to do. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

  • Just updated itunes, now "cannot be synced, the required file cannot be found." Help?

Just as the question stated. I recently updated itunes to the newest update. My ipod and the PC no longer like each other, it seems. I get the "cannot be synced, required file cannot be found" error. Help?

Ok, this error cleared up after unchecking all my photos. However, I have a large number of videos I want to add...and it only adds like 6 of them. (1) This is not a size issues as they've added in the past (2) The purple bar for the video component at the bottom only seems to include those videos it deems good enough to add, I guess. So even when the videos I want are checked, it ignores this. (3) The videos are properly named, in the correct format, and in the right folders (ie. not moved.) I don't  know what to do here! I just want to watch my videos on my ipod =(

  • Required file cannot be found to update ipod

required file cannot be found to update ipod
I recently had my hard drive crash and lost everything. I had all my music and photos on my ipod photo 60GB. I used a free version of ipod agent to transfer all my music and photos from the ipod to the pc (operating system XP). I placed all the music and photos on a back-up internal F drive, Which successfully worked. I then installed i-tunes. My music and photos were transfered into the new i-tunes program and I could play them. however, some songs were not transfered due to a message saying the songs were not authorized to play on this computer. When I tried to up-date my i-pod ,a message came back saying the ipod could not be updated because required files cannot be found. I then used ipod updater and retored the ipod to factory settings and deleted all the music on it. I also deleted all music in the itunes program and re-installed i-tunes. After re-installing i-tunes and ipod with all new updates, I again placed all music from my back-up drive F. Only 5,645 out of 7,255 were recognized. All my photos did transfer over correctly. A message said the others were not copied because they were not authorized to play on the computer. I got to this point twice and started to transfer the songs. but both times when copying music, by the time artists in the Cs' came a message came-up stating "the ipod could not be updated the required file cannot be found" My questions 1. why can I see the songs in the "f" drive and p[lay them from there but not have them all transfer into i-tunes? 2. What file I'm I missing that enables me to update my ipod? The message does not tell me the specific file
ipod photo color 60g Windows XP

The missing files referred to are the music files themselves, i.e songs.
Have you told iTunes where to look for your music folder? Go to edit/preferences/advanced/general and look at the location in the box 'iTunes Music Folder Location'.
Also, you may need to authorize the computer for any iTunes purchased music.

This is a known problem with Windows 7 Enterprise using certain Group Policy settings. Solution for me was to use another machine running Windows 7 Ultimate.

  • Genius Error... The required file cannot be found. Please try again later.

To those users with Windows 7 and iTunes that cannot turn on Genius due to a 'required file cannot be found' or have begun getting the error stated above and can't find the solution.
Well the solution is on this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10554450 (Windows 7 RTM (Build 7600) and iTunes 9.0), but is more complex to put into practice than the mere command given on the post.
*You must disable (not just stop) the Branchcache service on windows _and reboot_* the machine for it to take effect, after that Genius will update without any problems.
If you like me and have a corporate notebook with Group Policy setting this service to run then you must disable it from the services menu within Administrative Tools in the Control Panel (rather than the command in the previous post).
If you don't have administrator access then you must speak with your IT department and have them disable it for you.
Now this is what really annoys me - *APPLE really should get their act together and fix this error, as it's caused by a conflict in between the Genius update routine and a genuine windows service and has been around since the release of Windows 7 (perhaps Vista)*. It really can’t be that hard to fix since it’s just a simple data exchange

    I found more info here:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/geni us-results-cant-be-updated-right-now/ab98e076-50a8-4dd0-b9d1-ee4399030236?page=1 &tm=1322094589886
It looks like updating Match and updating Genius are both incompatible with the branchcache service. I disabled the service, and was able to fetch Genius and Match info to this PC. I then re-enabled branchcache, and once again, "update (Match, Genius)" fail with this error message--however, I can play my Cloud library from the PC, I just can't update its contents.

I am having this exact problem.
Though what will also happen after I click on "ok" the ipod will disconnect it self from itunes; it remains pluged in and the "do not disconnect" icon is shown on the screen, but it just stays like that from any where from 2-30 minutes. Eventually it will reconnect and start updating again untill the "The iPod 'name of iPod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." message comes up and the whole prosses starts over again, this has made updating the ipod which I have already reset, quite a headache to update, the prosses has not yet been compleated as I cannot be at my computer for mor than a few hours at a time. I also reinstalled itunes to see if that would fix the problem it has not. Though before, I would also get the message "an unknown error has occured." now that dosen't seem to appear, so at least that is fixed.
    Please help!

  • Error message: iPod cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found.

Each time I sync my 5th generation iPod to my laptop and open iTunes, I get the message "iPod cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." My husband already updated my iPod with the most current Updater (6/28/06). Any thoughts or suggestions?

After looking further into the archives, I got an answer to my question. There is a file called "iPod Photo Cache", located in the Pictures folder, that should be moved to Trash. Once done, the error message pops up no more!

    Hi,
I like many others have major problems with my Ipod, we downloaded the Itunes 6 , removed it, went back to 4.9, connected the Ipod, everything got erased. ( but it was still on the computer thank goodness, anyway now I can't put anything back on to my Ipod, it say "Ipod cannot update. The required file cannot be found"
I have Windows Xp Pro 2, what can I do, please lead me in the right direction.
    Thanks

OK - Looks like your iTunes is working and has the songs you expect in it. No need to uninstall iTunes.
Are the Playlists on the iPod only, or are they in iTunes only, or are they on both? Are they populated with the songs you expect?
You can save the Playlists by 'Exporting' them individually to a PC file. Within iTunes, select (highlight) a playlist, go to File==>Export Song List and save the file to a 'Playlists' folder that you create. Save the playlists as a .txt and an .xml file (do both for each playlist: data redundancy is good).
Do you have the original photos that are on the iPod? We will have to Restore the iPod and all data on it will be erased. As you have all the necessary music on iTunes, all we would be concerned about are the photos. Or anything else you haven’t mentioned.
As long as you are satisfied with the state of your iTunes (all music and playlists present and accounted for), then you can comfortably Restore the iPod and place it all back on the unit. Restoring an iPod will not impact your iTunes. It just clears off the iPod's HD and replaces the operating system with a fresh copy. This should correct your inability to download any additional music to the iPod.
Before you proceed with the Restore below, make sure that you have copies of all the data on the iPod so you do not lose anything.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software (if you already do, skip to *)
You also need to install the new Updater software (if applicable) by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
    After rebooting, run the Updater.
    * Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version and format your iPod's hard drive.
After the Restore complete, re-register the iPod with iTunes, choose your syncing preference and place the music back on the iPod. Do whatever it is you do with the photos (I just have a mini, so no experience with photos), and you should be good to go.
Post back if you have any questions. Especially if you are unsure of anything before you perform any additional processes.

Some things to try in this order:
    1) Make sure you designated the correct folders for music, etc.
    2) Press and Hold the Home and Power buttons on the iPad until the Apple Logo appears, about 10 seconds.
    3) Make sure all antivirus and firewalls are off.
    4) Delete and reinstall itunes. (Back up the itunes folder first.)
    Hope this helps...
