  • Unable to update iPad 1 to iOS 5.1

    Friends,
I was hoping someone would be able to help me with this issue as I have not been able to find a solution anywhere on these forums as of yet. I haven't even been able to find anyone else that has had this same issue for that matter.
I go into iTunes (version 10.6) to update my iPad 1 (currently version 4.3.1) and iTunes does indeed recognize that there is an update available as it states it right next to the "update" button as it normally would. The problem is everytime I click on "update," it refuses to update.  It simply opens up my Documents folder as if by magic the update would be in that folder.  It does the exact same thing when I click on the "restore" button.  So I can't restore or update the iPad.  My iPhone updated via iTunes with no problem.  I tried manually downloading the new iOS but that didn't work either (unless I did something wrong).
I called Apple Support and they had me uninstall iTunes and all of its components and then reinstall it.  That did nothing.
I will mention that I was able to factory wipe my iPad via a Mobile Device Management solution.  I thought restoring it to factory settings would fix the problem, but it did not.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I actually attempted that as well after reading various troubleshooting articles.
Good news is I finally was able to update it just now (manually).  I found out that the download link I had been using for the new iOS was not actually the newest.  It was 5.0.
I typed in "iOS 5.1.1 direct download link" into Google and found the latest download link.  I clicked "save as" and added the .ipsw extension and saved it to my desktop.  I then went into iTunes, clicked "update" and found the file I had just downloaded and clicked on it.  That did it!  I can't believe all this time it was because I was not using the 5.1.1 direct download link.  Hopefully this helps someone else.
varjak, thank you so much for your help. It is truly appreciated.

  • Unable to update iPad 2 with iOS 7

When I try to update my iPad it keeps saying an error occurred while installing ios7. Has this happened to anyone else.

Temporarily disable your firewall and anti-virus software and try the download again.

  • Updated IPad 2 to IOS 7.1.1 and IPad 2 flashed

I updated IPad with latest IOS 7.1.1 and it blanked out on me and had to save everything on computer, after it had shown me connection and iTunes symbol on screen.Transfered everything on to my computer and then it is asked me to activate IPad2 again from the begining and to input the first code I ever used when creating it.It says that my email address is not acceptable(I do not know how this happened since I only had 1 to begin with) and also I do not know how to recover this...

If the unit has NEVER been jailbroke, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • How do i remove an Update notification? I do not want to update to the latest iOS (Asian languages) which is useless to me and I don't want to waste space on my iPad. I want to be able to "Select All" instead of doing each update individually.

That's quite a title I created!  Sorry, I've never submitted a question before! ☺ I do not want to update to the latest iOS (Asian language stuff) which is useless to me and I don't want to waste space on my iPhone 4S and iPad 5. I want to be able to "Select All" updates instead of doing each update individually. It's a real pain in the you-know-what. Does anyone know how to I remove this notification (and any other updates I'm not interested in) from the Updates page? Thanks so much everyone!

Thanks so much for your time!  I wish you had a more positive answer, but c'est la vie!  I hate the fact that I cannot control my apps and feel like a hostage of the developer(s). I've read other forums and some responses were "then delete the app!"  Lame answer!  So thank you so much for your respectful and insightful reply!  Cheers.

I updated to the latest IOS and now my passwords don't work.  Reset 4 time which reset for my iPad and iPhone but I cant log into my itunes account using my apple ID it indicates an error, Help?

This may sound crazy, but download any free app.  This often "shocks" the other apps into working.

  • After updating to the latest IOS 8 on my ipad I do not have any documents on pages, keynotes etc. I have them on my iphone 5S and I can log in on my pc and see al the documents. I have icloud turned on and idrive.

After updating to the latest IOS 8 on my ipad / iphone etc I do not have any documents on pages, keynotes etc. I have them on my iphone 5S and I can log in on my pc and see al the documents. I have icloud turned on and idrive.
If I start a new document in pages and then try to share this document with the top ring link in pages "share Link via iCloud" a screen notification tells me to "Set Up iCloud. Go to Settings and select iCloud. Sign in and turn on iCloud Drive for Page".
When I go to settings I see that I am signed in.
Please help as I need the documents back on my ipad.

Did you have iCloud photo stream turned on for photos?  If you did, then you can view your photos at iCloud.com.  If you can verify that they are all there, you can do the factory reset.  Once you turn on iCloud again after the reset, the photos won't be on the phone but they will still be in the photo stream which you can view on the device.  You should be able to copy the photos down to the computer from iCloud.  On an Apple Mac computer, iPhoto can view photo stream and you can download photos there too.
Personally, with syncing issues with iTunes, I prefer to use an app called PhotoSync (which is an app in the App Store, Mac App Store, and available from the developer's website for Windows PC's.  This App (once turned on for both devices) lets you send photos back and forth within wifi.

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

    Hey there SHEEL.handa,
As I understand it, your Settings app installing an update correctly that it downloaded. I would start by quitting the Settings app:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, use this part of the article about troubleshooting updating in this manner:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update
If the issue persists, try updating your device in another network or use iTunes to update your device. Learn more about iOS updates.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

Hi Demo, thank you for your suggestions.
I've tried updating in the following conditions:
    1. "Over The Air" at one location;
    2. On a Windows computer running the latest version of iTunes at the same location;
    3. On Mavericks (10.9.4) running the latest version of iTunes (11.4 (18)) at another location;
    4. On Mavericks, latest iTunes over a VPN with a server location in US;
    5. On Mavericks, using a 3G connection shared from an iPhone;
    6. On Yosemite developer preview with a previous version of iTunes at the same location.
I got the same results in most cases except for an occasional error with code 9; I'll try again in other conditions.
Interestingly enough, I've successfully updated my devices to iOS 7.1.2 and to iOS8 GM without any issues at the same location but, of course, no two conditions are exactly the same

  • I updated my iPhone to iOS 7.0.5 and I lost my messages and camera app and other apps i downloaded from app store. I was having the problem of losing apps since before I updated to the latest IOS. What should i do?

I updated my iPhone to iOS 7.0.5 and I lost my messages and camera app and other apps i downloaded from app store. I was having the problem of losing apps since before I updated to the latest IOS. I have tried enable and disable restriction, connecting my phone to my laptop and sync from my computer and none of them is working. What should i do?

Often when this type of thing occurs with missing default apps it is due to a situation where you are unable to 'see' the apps. If you will go to your front display of your device go to settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen layout.
This reset allows for your apps that have for whatever reason been hidden in such an area as you arn't able to find them now to be returned to the area as which they were when you first had the device.
As far as the missing Apps that were purchased through the Apps Store if you will go to settings>itunes and Apps store and click where it reads about automatcally downloading apps clicking on the toggle switch AND clicking on the toggle switch which allows for cellular data to be enabled this then will effectively automatically download all apps to your device that was purchased from the App Store.
    Good luck friend.

  • How to update Ipad 2 from IOS 4.3.5 to IOS 5. Itunes won't let me do it because it keeps showing error messages asking me to check if my network is active.

how to update Ipad 2 from IOS 4.3.5 to IOS 5? Itunes won't let me do it because it keeps showing error messages asking me to check if my network is active.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

  • How to update iPad 4 to iOS 6.1.6?

I want to update my iPad 4 from iOS 6.1.2 to iOS 6.1.6 (via iTunes) but the only option I am given is to update to the latest iOS 7, which I don't want.
    Is it possible?

It matters anywhere. This isn't someone being able to "snoop" on your communications and hence be an issue on public WiFi but not via cell. It's a flaw that could allow a hacker to trick your system into visiting and accepting as valid an imposter site that looks like a secure (i.e. HTTPS) web site should the attacker be able in some way to misdirect your connection, such as through a fake email or other fake web site.

  • Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"

Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"
I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!
What am I supposed to do now? In 6 hours I have to get on the road and conduct business with a empty blank factory out of the box iPad. How am I supposed to know who owes me money or who has paid their bills Apple? All of my meetings and calendar dates are GONE!
Everything was supposed to be backed up and restored after the update!
Question???WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS UPDATE WIPE OUT ALL SETTINGS AND APPS ON THE iPAD??? All the other updates left everything on the iPad intact and ONLY upgraded the IOS,and when it was done everything was still there.
Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):
    ERROR: Restore message response: 102 rename error: File name too long (63) at path "/var/mobile/Library/SafeHarbor/com.pocketgems.tappethotel/Container/Documents/ savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHis tory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGa meHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/sa vedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHisto ry/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGame History/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/save dGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory /savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHi story/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedG ameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/s avedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHist ory/savedGameHistory/1313349538-pocket_gems_crash_report.txt" (MBErrorDomain/102)
I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!
