Unable to update iTunes.. now unable to OPEN iTunes

I was having trouble trying to update my iTunes because it was unable to uninstall Quicktime.. but now I can't even open iTunes. Windows keeps telling me that it encountered an error and has to shut down the program.
let's check to see if the current itunes problem is being caused by a broken or missing QuickTime. (itunes needs a properly functioning QT in order to work properly.) try launching your QuickTime. does it launch properly, or do you get an error message?
if you get an error message, try uninstalling your existing QT from Add/Remove. does it uninstall, or do you get an error message or other unusual behavior?

Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", and click "Change". Select "Repair" and click "Next" as per the following screenshot:

To resolve this error, I recommend completely removing and reinstalling iTunes and all of its related components using these steps:
Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.

I too had this problems (Windows 8.1). A few weeks ago after the previous update before this version of itunes, I'd had a problem with the itunes store crashing and at that time I followed instructions to copy QTMovieWin.dll to the itunes folder, which fixed the store crashing.
Today I fixed the problem by:
Delete QTMovieWin.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Uninstall ALL Apple Software using Control Panel / Programs and Features. I uninstalled:
iTunes
QuickTime
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Application Support
Apple Software Update
Bonjour
Delete the folders:
C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
Restart the computer
Reinstall QuickTime
Reinstall iTunes
Everything works GREAT now, including the iTunes store. You will not lose your media files, I got everything back, all my settings, playlists, etc.

this "serial number" obtained from Amazon or similar firms is not a serial number, only a code with which you can request a serial number from Adobe. Here you have to go through "Adobe Store", and look for the button "Serial Number Request". Fill in the form and, after a while you will get a "real" serial number.
