Unable to update my macbook, access macbook info/preferences, or adjust volume

Hello Terence,
Thanks for your reply.
So if iPhoto is installed through some other account in my Mac and I'm using it the other person can't access my iPhoto library...right?
I don't want to give anyone access to my library or system hard drive, So can you please let me know how to check what has been shared with others from a mac. (also the hard drive)
As this is my Mac which I've bought but for 1st 10 days one of my friend used it using his apple ID
So I want my Mac fully secured from now onwards.
Regards,
Sri

  • Unable to update iPhoto on my MacBook Pro

I can not update my iPhoto from 9.4.2 to 9.4.3 on my MacBook Pro. I purchased it from the AppStore. Everything else updates fine.
I get this prompt: "We could not complete your update. Photo is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates." I tried choosing Software Update from the Apple. It takes me to the App Store. I can't figure out why this isn't working.
    Can anyone help?

Delete iPhoto from your computer, and then, open App Store > Purchases and download iPhoto. It will install 9.4.3. It looks like there's something wrong with iPhoto, so deleting it and installing it will solve that

  • Unable to update iPhoto on new Macbook Pro

I have a new MacBook pro and AppStore indicates that there is an update for iPhoto.  When I try to update iPhoto I get an error stating "to update this application sign in with the account you used to purchase it".
I did not register the first time I booted the MacBook so I am assuming that it must not know what Apple ID to use for the update, but I do have my apple id associated with my user account.  How do I get around this issue so I can update iPhoto?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Apple support suggested the following (which didn't work for me, but I'm sharing as they might work for others - I'll keep the post updated when I hear back, again):
    1) Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
    2) Enter your Apple ID and password.
    3) Click Purchases.
    4) If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them.
    5) Click Install to compete installation of your applications.
If this does not work, follow the instructions below and then repeat the steps above to accept the iLife apps again.
    1) Close the Mac App Store.
    2) In Finder, click on the Go menu.
    2) Click Go to Folder.
    3) Enter ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/
    4) Drag adoption.plist to the Trash.
    5) Relaunch the Mac App Store.
You should then be prompted to accept the apps for your current account.
If you are not prompted to accept the apps when you sign back in to the Mac App store and click on purchases, please contact us back.

  • Unable to update iPhoto in my MacBook

    Hi Friends,
My MacBookPro was previously used by a friend of mine and after I started using it I used to store my photos in iPhoto. Recently received an update for iPhoto and when tried it asks my the old user account password. So now I'm clear that iPhoto was installed using the old account where I used to store my pics.
Can anyone tell me if my pics were secured or the previous guy have the access to it?

    vivebk67,
FYI, I have the same issue.  I converted from MS Office 2010 to Mac Office 2011 by importing .pst files several months ago and I have noticed that many emails, which I originally received in MS 2010 but coverted to Mac 2011, show the paperclip as if there is an attachment.  But when I open the email, the attachment is not there.
At this point I cannot find any pattern as to why some converted emails retained their attachment and other emails appear to have retained their attachment but the attachment is not visible.
I can confirm that there actually is an attachment by opening up MS Office 2010, but that is a huge pain becasue I have to open Parallels to do that.  I have no issues with any attachments received in Mac Office 2011.
I spent an hour opening up a ticket with MS, sent them .pst files with examples and the guy was able to confirm that he could open the attachment in MS, but not Mac.  BUT, of course, I was told that I would not be apprised of any ticket updates and that the only way I would know if the issues was fixed was when I was finally able to view attachments that I was not able to view previously.

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.

Don't worry! Everything should be back to normal if you follow these steps.

  • I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2

I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2. I am currently running iTunes 10 on my MacBook right now because it was my only option to get iTunes back on my MacBook. Everything is fine with syncing my device but the only problem I keep encountering is the restoring and updating options. When I restore my device it tells me that It could not be restored at this time. When I update it, iTunes tells me that it cannot complete the current build. I know for a fact I am missing some files that were deleted when I attempted the downgrade. Anybody know what files I am currently missing that is causing this?

  • HT1338 I'm unable to update any software on my macbook air and iMac

I'm unable to update any software on my macbook air and iMac getting the following error "to update your software you need to sign in with the account you used to purchase it" any help is appreciated

Please try each of the following steps you haven't already taken, until the issue is resolved. After each step, relaunch the App Store and try again.
    1. Follow the instructions in the Apple Support article linked below:
Mac App Store: Cannot update App Store purchases or updates do not seem available
    2. If any App Store purchases were made under a different Apple ID, or if the bundled iLife applications were accepted under a different ID, sign in to the App Store with that ID to update.
    3. Alternatively, delete the probem applications and re-download them with the ID you're using now. If you haven't already purchased them with that ID, you'll have to do that first, because purchases can't be transferred from one account to another.
    4. Select the Purchased tab in the App Store window. If you see an item in the list marked "You have 3 apps to accept," click Accept.
    5. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window may open with a file selected. If it does, delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your login password.
    Then repeat step 4.
    6. Select
    Store ▹ View My Account
from the App Store menu bar, then select View hidden purchases. If you're trying to update any hidden purchases, unhide them.
    7. Launch iTunes and select
    Store ▹ Authorize This Computer
    from the menu bar.
    8. If you've moved any App Store apps out of the applications folder, or into a subfolder, put them back. Never move or copy those applications.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
Don't install the Thunderbolt update -- it's defective.

  • HT5313 OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air.

OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air. It now takes ages to boot and does not shut down. How can I restore my computer? Also textedit can't open files saying I don't have permission. I can cat them in Terminal fine and the permissions are OK in Get Info.

    Thanks macjack and FatMac\>MacPro ,
After repaiing permissions in disc utility I couldn’t log in again, and couldn’t understand rebuilding ACL permissions as I had printed out your replies and had no access to my email to get the link.
After trying to install the update from the combo updater thing got even worse, next I did a reinstall from recovery, which spent six hour downloading then failed with no error. I did an erase of my partition and reinstall which then failed but gave me an error about encryption. So I erased the whole drive and reinstalled. This worked. I then ran the update again and it was broken the same as the first update!
After another erase and reinstall I decided not to update, so I stated the restore from time machine. After this completed it crashed with the error message saying I must power off and then on again. restarting didn’t help.
After another erase of the whole drive, and reinstall I did a partial restore from time machine and am running again.
However, I don’t want to attempt another upgrade to 10.7.5. Will Apple comeout with a statement about what went wrong? When will you fix this update?
In the mean time I suggest to any owners of MacBook Air to avoid this update.
For reference this is my model:
