Unable to upgrade this photo library?

I just installed iLife 'o6. When I start iPhoto I get a message saying "The photo library needs to be upgraded needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." I click on upgrade and then get a message saying "Unable to upgrade this photo library because the current user does not have access. If possible, repair permissions for the iPhoto Library Folder and try again". How do I do this. There are only two users for this iMac G5 and we both have full permissions.
Thanks for an suggestions.

Great find Michel!
This is what I needed help with. I found that I had about 10 or so locked images and had to restart iPhoto each time it found a locked file (very tedious). But it WORKED!! Thanks
I found a way to search your iPhoto Library to find he locked files:
1. Open Terminal (located in Application/Utilities)
2. type in "find " (include space)
3. Drag your iPhoto Library folder into the Terminal window. This will add the directory location to the find (e.g. "find /Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/")
4. Add "-flags uchg" at the very end of it. Be sure there is no space at the end
find /Users/john/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/ -flags uchg
Hit return amnd you should get a list of where the images are.
There is more info in this thread here on doing a "batch" unlocking of all the listed files: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1167705

  • How do i upgrade my photo library

when i try to open iphoto the iphoto library upgrader opens and says "to use iphoto'11 you need to upgrade your photo library.  when i click continue the box and program quits.  what should i do

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library

    Hi all,
    This is driving me insane.
I have uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library:-
I have upgraded to yosemite 3 times in case thats where there problem was - no.
I removed and reinstalled the new iphoto program about 5 times - no avail.
I have installed iphoto library upgrader but it says that my library does not need it.
I have installed iphoto9.1 update but it states that it cannot be installed on the disc as iphoto 9.0 or later must be installed but i have installed the latest version?
I have even upgraded the server and i paid for this.
When i open iphoto in applications it will open then state that i need to upgrade the library - i am happy to do this.
I agree to this then iphoto crashes and closes before doing anything else.
I have also tried holding the option button and opening iphoto but it crashes all the same.
I am at a loss what to do. I could not access my library at all but i managed to find all my pics in finder so i have backed everything up and deleted all the files in the hope this would fix it - nope. Still the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions?? Please oh please, this has taken days and countless wifi hours...
    TIA...

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

No I have not tried those things. I don't even know what that means I suppose I have the newest version of aperature; I just bought it 4 days ago.

  • 1293 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that are not a part of this photo library.

In preparation for merging two iPhoto libraries with Aperture, I ran "repair database" as suggested above by léonie in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4998390?tstart=0
After chugging for a while, iPhoto puts up a modal dialog box saying:
1293 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that are not a part of this photo library.
Would you like to import them?
    What does this mean?
    - nello

I re-ran the the repair on a backup of my library and chose "yes" on the import of of the found pictures.
Unfortunately, the saved pictures included both original and edited images and the import did not re-assemble them into just a single entry.
For example, I have a two pictures of a portico ceiling, the original (with an ID of P1010071_2) and another (P1010071) which is the same except that iPhoto's "Enhance" Quick Fix has been applied.
Is there any way rejoin the original  (P1010071_2) and fixed images(P1010071) into a single entry?

  • Wants to upgrade My photo library but says it has to rebuild?

The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. I selected upgrade

    Help please.  I have a 2011 MacPro

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6 upgrade, large photo library is not recognised.

iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2009) with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram, 1 TB HD.
Just installed OS X Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6.  I didn't run iPhoto immediately after instal, but my wife did while I was gone.  She told me later that iPhoto didn't work and that when she clicked iPhoto, it asked to fix the permissions and after a bit iPhoto became unresponsive so she shut down the computer.
When I opened it, it asked to upgrade the library to work with the new version of iPhoto.  Clicked ok and let it run...it did not last more than 5 minutes.  When trying to open iPhoto now, it pauses for a second, then it displays the initial first time use splash screen (yellow sticky that says how to add photos to iPhoto).
The photo library in the finder shows it to be 230GB which is about the size I remember it to be.  Showing the package contents I can see all of the photos in the "old masters" folder.
    I have tried the following:
    - Re-boot
    - Repairing disk permissions (from recovery mode)
    - Reset PRAM
    - deleted and re-installed iPhoto
    - Utilised all the options in the iPhoto Library First Aid (all take about 1 second to complete)
    - Ran iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild photo library (took under a minute)
I have another copy of the library in another folder as well as an online backup (but all have been updated with the problem library so I don't think that will help much).  As we speak, I am doing a local backup of the photos to an external drive just in case something further were to happen or I need to do a clean instal (don't think I can wait to have all of that download from the online backup).
So if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
    1. Is there anything else I can do to save the database before having to just pull all of the photos out of the library and losing all of the metadata?
    2.  If thats all there is to do, what is easiest and best way to do manually or automate this...and to retain as much of the metadata as possible?

  • Upgrading of photo library from iphoto 8.1.2 to 9.6

I have had my photo library running on an external disk on my old iMac with iphoto 9 (8.1.2) running. I just bought a MacBook with iPhoto 9.6 installed. I wanted to switch my external disk to the MacBook, and when I did so I got prompted with: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto". I clicked upgrade, and the the machine proceeded to upgrade, but with the window stuck on: "Rebuilding thumbnail cache". I am not able to connect iPhoto 9.6 with my photo library on the external disk. Any suggestions how to resolve this?

    I have no backup.
<insert obligatory lecture on the importance of backing up, especially before updating anything right here>
There are no guarantees now, as the process of upgrading the Library has broken down. The break might be trivial or terminal, it's in the lap of the gods.
Quit iPhoto. That upgrade is in trouble and won't complete.
Make a back up now - at least we can stop things getting worse.
    Then:
    Worth a try...

  • I started the Iphoto update and it had been running for hours to upgrade my photo library

Today I ran my updates that were available.  One was for Safari and one was for Iphoto.  I restarted my computer and went to my Iphotos.  It has been showing upgrade for six hours and still nothing.  It just continues to show that it is upgrading my library.  I had not read anything about this as I trusted that it run would smoothly.  Now I am seeing that there have been problems and that I should have backed up my photos.  Is there hope that it is still trying to upgrade my photos?

It's not upgrading your photos, it's upgrading the Library.
Try force quit iPhoto (it's in the Apple Menu) and cross your fingers that there has been no damage.
If there has been damage post back.

  • Unable to access I photo library previously available on seagate external hard drive

.I had moved all of my pictures off my macbook air (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)) to a seagate external hard drive.   I am able to see some photos on the hard drive but not those that moved as the I photo library.  I am unable to get to any of the pictures that are in the I photo library.  What can I do to try to access them?

  • I'm unable to download my Photo Library

I used iTunes to sync a selected folder on my PC that was a backup of my old iPhone photos. The folder name was DCIM. The sync added the photos and I now have three albums - Camera Roll, Photo Library and DCIM. It looks like everything in the Photo Library is just a mirror of what's in the DCIM album. I thought maybe the DCIM name was confusing things, but when I hit edit and then try to change the DCIM, it only flashes when I select it. I was able to edit a test album without issue. I'm also not able to delete any photos in the Photo Library or DCIM albums, but I can in the Camera Roll.
So, this DCIM album is my only backup of these 4K photos and I would really like to get a copy off my phone ASAP in case it dies.
    Any help would be appreciated.

What happened to the DCIM folder on your computer? That should be the backup of your photos.
Photos taken with your phone or copied from email or website etc. reside in the Camera Roll and can be deleted there.
Photos that were copied to your phone by syncing with your computer, the dcim album in this case, cannot be deleted on your phone. To delete them you must do another sync but this time deselect the folder in iTunes on your computer before clicking on Apply and Sync.
The Photo Library is just that. It is a way to view all photos on your phone. If you had more albums in addition to the DCIM album this would be of value to you. But with only one album, not so much.
Albums acquired on your phone by syncing with your computer, the DCIM album in this case, cannot have their name edited as it is tied to the album on your computer when you sync your phone to your computer.
Albums you create on your phone are not tied to albums on your computer and can therefore have their names edited on your phone.

  • How do I upgrade aperterure photo library?

I have previous libraries saved to external drives that i can no longer open with my upgraded version of Aperture 3.2. It suggests that I upgrade my previous library before trying to import or open (version 3.1) How do I upgrade the version in a file without the Aperture program? Thanks in advance.
    tourmaline

    Tourmaline,
If you open an older library, Aperture should prompt you to upgrade the library.  However, you aren't seeing that?  Can you post a screen shot of what Aperture is telling you? The window should be interactive (I.e., "Yes," upgrade my library; or "Cancel," do not), but your question doesn't imply that Aperture is asking you anything.
You cannot upgrade an Aperture library without Aperture.
What type of file system is the external drive on which your older libraries are stored?  If it's not a Mac OS file system, you probably cannot have Aperture use it.

  • Yosemite and iphoto upgrade missing photo library

While painfully transferring one user acount to another mac, my external hard drive died with all back-ups.  After I sucessfully and with great trevail migrated the account , I found that I had neglected to upgrade both computers to Yosemite.  When I did so, along, I believe, with iphoto, my photos all disappeared.  It opens up to the screen with the yellow sticky note.  When I try to access the library under Finder, Photos, it still opens up the to menu with the yellow sticky note, and no photos (oddly enough, the trash in iphot is filled with the many many photos that I have deleted and never gotten rid of).
    Help....

Have a look at this discussion - iPhoto Upgrade and Library Issue
It may be the same problem.
Select your iPhoto Library in the Finder. By default the iPhoto Library is in the Pictures folder. Ctrl-click or right click the iPhoto Library. From the contextual menu that will pop up select "Show Package Contents". Are there folders "Masters" and "Old Masters"? If there is a folder "Old Masters" the upgrade of your iPhoto library has failed.
Copy both folders - Masters and Old Masters to a drive, where you have enough space. The Old Masters folder will probably contain most of your missing photos. We do not know any method right now, how to fix a library, that has been corrupted in this way. If you cannot restore from an earlier backup, since your backup drive failed,
    backup the corrupted library,
create a new, empty iPhoto library,
then try to recreate the iPhoto library by importing the photos from Old Masters into a new iPhoto library. also, import any photos from Masters.
And send feedback to Apple. This bug needs attention urgently.  http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
