Unable to use encrypted USB stick

my computer does not recognise my encryped USB stick, and therefore will not open it. A problem as I have to use an encryped stick for work. It comes up with 'no default application specified'

What model of stick is this? Did you check the manufacturer's website for any Mac-specific software that may need to be installed to decrypt it?

Did you ever find out what to do, this has happened to me too.  Apple support could not help as the machine was not recognising the safestick.
Also I am concerned that even if I fix it then the person I want to give it to will also have the same problem.

  • BIOS Recovery using a USB stick for S10-3t

im from south africa and am having trouble contacting my support center.
i tried to flash my bios and my netbook won't start up now, and i need to recover my bios manually.
please help me with the following:
    1. procedure to use my usb stick as a recovery disk, what files need to be on it, and how to make it bootable from my s10-3t.
    2. how to use the usb stick to recover my bios and boot my netbook.
    please help :-)

    Hi thanks yigit.
I managed to contact the service provider, but they have a lead time of about 4 weeks for a simple repair like flashing the bios...
I have an estimate of around $70 from a reputable repair center to do the flashing, with a lead time of a few hours as they do the repair on-site.
My question: does the warranty that comes with the s10-3t cover flashing the bios? If not, would it be wise for me to have the flashing done by the other repair center, and not your local service provider?
(Its actually very inconvenient, as you only have the one company being a Lenovo partner in SA, with 2 branches. And they do not collect the device for repair...
Maybe if I explained exactly what I did to land in my situation it would be best to get the best help:
I wanted to use a PCI-E modem I had already, instead of purchasing a new one at around $200. My modem is a Sierra MC8755 with PID/VID of 1199:6804.
I upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Ultimate, updated bios from lenovo's site, then tried to install only to get the error message "Unauthorized device installed. Please shut down and remove device"
I then found online forums saying to edit the bios.
I edited my bios (24CN62WW) at MOD5100.ROM, adding my modem ID where the Ericsson F3607gw:  0BDB_1905 ID's were with Hex editor. I switched the values as required, ie "99 11 04 68"
I flashed those successfully, but still got the error message.
I then read a post that stated that you may edit the POST with the phoenix bios editor, by checking and unchecking certain sectors to stop the checking of whitelisted devices on startup. After doing this, the bios was created successfully, the system restarted but failed to boot. It starts up, and then stops after the LED's come on, and the processor light flashes once.

  • How can I keep bootable partitions from showing when I want to use my usb stick without the option command at boot up?

Im using a usb stick with bootable diagnostic partitions and a extra partition for diags that run in the OS. When i want to use diagnostics from this extra partition on a mac thats already booted, I have to wait for all the bootable partitions to mount as well as the one partition that I need. Is there a way to hide these bootable partitions when using the usb drive as a storage device to run diags in the OS?
    Thanks

I think I may have to look into a redirect line in my htaccess file so that direct loads of my mp3's route through my website page.
If you do this you may find iTunes won't read the files, so I should test carefully on one file first if possible.

  • To upload photos from my pc onto my ipad using a usb stick. I bought a camera connector kit and tried placing the usb stick onto one of the white square adaptors, stuck it into the ipad2 and I got 'the device uses too much power'' message. Pls help.

I am not very familiar with the ipad2. I wished to transfer some photos from my pc (not an apple pc but that is the only one I have) to my ipad2 as I thought it would be easier to cull them, edit, crop etc to create albums for our recent trip (the photos are already on the pc and no longer on the camera memory card). When I place the usb stick on the adaptor and stick it onto the Ipad2 I keep getting 'device uses too much power/ requires too much power' message. I read somewhere on the internet that a usb hub could be used to solve the issue but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong? Is there actually a way around this problem. If not why does apple sell this product for Ipad users at all?
Thank you for any help/ solution you can offer.
    Regards

I'd ask that on the iPad forum.

  • If I use a USB stick for time machine, will I be able to install Windows (using bootcamp) from the same USB?

I have a 64GB USB Stick, and I am interested in usign it with time machine. My question is, firstly, is this possible? And secondly, if I do do this, would it be possible to install windows using bootcamp from the same USB. My mother refuses to let me install windows without a backup of Mac OS X, so I really need to know if this is possible???

You need to use a drive that is larger than your Mac's internal drive for Time Machine, so a USB stick will not work.  You need to buy an external hard drive.  It's worth it. Time machine is a fantastic backup system, keeping not just a single backup, but multiple versions of your files as well (hence the need for a larger drive).

  • Can I download footage onto iMovie using a USB stick?

    Hi there,
Very quick question. Can I download my footage, which is saved on a 16gb USB stick, directly to iMovie? If not then is there a way I can get round this?
I don't have a camcorder as the footage was shot on my Super 8 camera and then transferred professionally.
    Many thanks! x

It depends. Mainly on what codec the service used.
Im iMovie, try FILE/IMPORT MOVIES and navigate to the external USB stick, select a file and import it.
If it does not work, see if you can open the file in QuickTime Player, then click WINDOW/INSPECTOR and tell us what is listed next to the word "Format"

  • Can I install Windows 8.1 as Bootcamp partition from OSX Mountain Lion using a USB stick?

    I have the following:
Bootable USB stick with Windows 8.1 - 64 bit
MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 - it's probably 3-4 years old.
The Bootcamp partition currently has Windows 7 installed.
I want to know whether I can install Windows 8.1 from a USB stick into a Bootcamp partition. Apple's article on the topic refers to Bootcamp 5.1, but my OSX install has Bootcamp 5.0 - I am assuming 5.1 comes with the Mavericks version.  I don't want to upgrade to Mavericks because I am running out of space as it is on the OSX partition.
Thus my question. So can I?

Your laptop has a DVD drive, right? If so you need to burn your ISO to a disc, will not work off USB

  • Unable to use any USB ports on Satellite P50-A (PSPMHC-01M00P) are Windows 7 Ultimate Install

    Hi Everyone,
I created a dual-boot Win7/Win8.1 system on my Satellite P50-A (PSPMHC-01M00P) unfortunately, even though I was able to find a working USB Controller driver from a similar model's Win7 driver, I  can not get the laptop to recognize or install anything USB device regardless of which port I plug the device into.  It's as if my USB ports are disabled when in Windows 7.  This isn't the case with my Windows 8.1 installation.
Could this be a driver issue since I know it's not a hardware one?  Could anyone recommend a suitable non-Canadian Windows 7 64bit chipset driver that I could try in hopes to resolve my USB functionality?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Satellite P50-A-01M (PSPMHC-01M00P)
We support US computers at this site. Everything for that Canadian model is here.
Unfortunately, your site does not include anything for Windows 7. As you've noticed, that Windows version does not support USB 3.0 natively. It needs a driver.
But you are in luck! Because it's in the same part-number family (PSPMHx), this US computer uses the same drivers and utilities. Compare the specs.
    Satellite P50-AST2GX1 (PSPMHU-01G00R)
    Those downloads are here.
If you want everything to work, the order of installation is important. Start with a clean install of Windows 7. Install the chipset software and display drivers prior to any other drivers. Install the TVAP before any other Toshiba utilities.

  • Mac iPod used as USB stick with Windows

I am using my iPod mini with Mac but would like to be able to transfer files between my Mac and Windows computers. Unfortunately I havn't had any luck there. Use of disc is enabled and when I connect my iPod to a PC it is recognized as connected - but still it is not possible to transfer any files?!

    Hello,
I recently purchased my first Mac and reformatted my
20GB color iPod to sync with iTunes 7 on my Mac.
When I connect my iPod to my PC to obtain files, the
computer asks me to reformat the iPod so that it can
be used on Windows. It informed me that reformating
would erase the iPod. How can I transfer files
using my iPod without reformating? If I have to
reformat, will I still be able to auto-sync with
iTunes on my Mac? I don't know if this is a
question that has been asked a million times, I
tried searching the forums, but didn't find
specifically what I was looking for. I am not
technologically savvy and am still learning how to
use my Mac, so any help you provide would be
    fabulous!
    Thanks!
Hey, I have the same problem right now. Before when i had it formatted for my pc, i was able to mount as an harddrive on pc and mac(but it took a while on mac)and sync with iTunes on pc or mac. If i were you, back up everthing on your iPod, and format it for PC.
    Good Luck!!

  • Cryptsetup luks boot mkinitcpio usb stick encrypted

    Hi,
I am using cryptsetup and LUKS for encrypting my home partition.
Till now i've used ASK for PASSWORD in /etc/crypttab
But i wanted to use a usb stick for storing a key.
    Reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LUKS
I successfully have created i key, i added it with luksAddkey and everything seems to be ok.
I have a vfat usb stick that i have copied to the keyfile.
I did my tests, and its works fine.
So, i tweaked my /boot/grub/menu with this:
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro cryptkey=/dev/disk/by-uuid/D74E-9973:vfat:keyfile cryptdevice=/dev/sda4:encrypted
I have edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to add some kernel modules and encrypt hook
    and created a new kernel image for safety (i want to have a failsafe kernel image too);
base udev autodetect pata scsi sata encrypt filesystems
the problem is that: poll_device "${ckdev}" is failed (line 24 in encrypt hook) and i am reading
"Keyfile could not be opened. Reverting to passphrase"
I've hacked a little the encrypt hook to debug why poll_device is failing, but i cant figured it out.
    The rootdelay is 10sec already.
It seems that my usb device cant be recognized from udev hook (Before encrypt) and my kernel image dont seem to find the external usb stick.
Any help would be appreciated it.
PS: Sorry for my bad english

Yes, mkinitcpio will be integrated in the next version of larch, which is gradually taking on form - at present I am reworking the hard disk installer.
As phrakture is working on a live CD based standard arch installer, I am hoping it will be possible to share much of the code.
It would of course be possible to integrate mkinitcpio into the current larch version, but it would require a bit of cleverness and probably some changes outside of the initramfs bit to cope with the limitations of the klibc environment (or else continued inclusion of busybox in the initramfs). Anyway, I think it would be better to wait for larch version 2, which has been designed with all this in mind. The approach used in version 1 works fine, it is just not quite the same as the new standard Arch boot sequence (and there need to be adaptations for live CD booting anyway).

  • Bootcamp cant use USB stick to download drivers.

My Macbook Pro cant seem to use the USB stick to download the drivers for Windows. I have install Windows on a new partition but cant use it since the machine does not talk with the software without the drivers.
Every time I try to download them, it tells me ''Unable to save the Windows support software on the selected disk. An error occurred while saving the Windows support software.'' (English translation from French).
Went twice to the Genius Bar, lost my time twice and I dont really know what to do.

    Good Afternoon Juliendls,
The resources below will explain how to setup Boot Camp using a USB.  What version of Windows are you trying to install?  Is it possible that you have not formatted the USB media for Windows?
How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468
Frequently Asked Questions about installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-lb/HT202008
Where can I get the Windows Support Software (Windows drivers)?
Use Boot Camp Assistant to automatically download the software for your Mac and the versions of OS X and Windows you are using. Refer to System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems for more information.
How do I use the Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Copy the Support Software to the root level of a USB flash or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Attach the hard drive to the USB port of your Mac after Windows 7 is installed.
Double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 7 installation is done.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk for use with a Windows computer.
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The name’s maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button, and then click Erase again.
    Hope that helps ...

  • A terminal for users to scan USB sticks before they use them on the domain?

I've use stand alone sheep dips a lot, however...
Make sure you connect them to an isolated network connection to the internet for updates once a day, this must be separate (use a different VLAN and ACL if you have to).
The machine must be rebuilt, or have two and rotate them on a regular basis (each week?) or when an infected USB device is inserted (don't risk other devices), at this point format, format and format a few more times that USB stick before it's allowed to be removed!

Anyone else come up with anything like this or have any recommendations for how they did it or what they used? We're fairly tight here when it comes to malware, our firewalls scan incoming and outgoing traffic, we run Kaspersky on our servers alongside Webroot as well as Webroot on our user end points.Yet stuff still gets through, we recently got hit by a crypto which wiped out our finance file share (lucky we have backups), it avoided KES and that's actually why we've been running Webroot along side it. It's very very likely that this came in via a USB stick (avoiding 40k worth of enterprise firewalls), our users are very carefree when it comes to where they get them and what they do with them. External contractors and alike have been allowed to use their USB sticks on domain machines and it's been an uphill battle to get people to...

  • [Solved] ^has_journal error for encrypted USB installation

    Hi,
I am trying to install Arch on an encrypted USB stick, but i am facing a challenge in the very initial stages.
Its been advised that if installing arch on a USB stick, one should disable journaling. But the command to format to ext4 without journaling fails. Here is what i am doing
    # cryptsetup -y -v luksFormat /dev/sda2
    # cryptsetup open /dev/sda2 cryptroot
    # mkfs.ext4 -O ^has_journal /dev/sda2
the mkfs.ext4 command above gives the following error:
/dev/sda2 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here
Instead, when i use the slightly modified version of the original command specified in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … _with_LUKS, i get the following error:
    mkfs -t ext4 -O ^has_journal /dev/mapper/cryptroot
    Invalid filesystem option set: install.txt
Can you advise whats going wrong with the mkfs.ext4 command?
