Unable to use home sharing on my iOS devices

For god's sake, please don't refer me to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972. I've already gone through those steps.
I have a iTunes 11.1.2.32 on a fully patched Win 7. My son's iMac has no issues w/ Home Sharing, being able to access the library on my main system, but my iPhone and iPad, both w/ the most current iOS cannot. I can see the library in the shared section of the Music app. When I click on it, I get a thin circle that starts getting thicker in a clockwise pattern, but it will either stop at the half-way point or the 3/4 mark and go no further, regardless of how long I let it sit there.

I have the same problem in a 100% Mac system at home. Our media server is a 2008 unibody MacBook connected to USB external drives. Latest version of Mavericks and iTunes. Home sharing is enabled on that server. When I open the Videos app on my iPhone and select Home Sharing at the bottom and then select my shared iTunes library, the circle will get halfway done and then stop. The MacBook server is awake when this is happening.
I usually reset my iPhone, turn off and then off home sharing on our media server, quit (not close) and restart the Videos app on my iPhone. After 10 minutes of doing these things it will eventually work...but not always. Our wireless network is provided by a 5th gen Airport Extreme. It's an "N" only network.
We also have three 3rd gen Apple TVs at home that all connect to this server via WiFi and everything is fine.
And don't get me started on the fact that even when everything works within the iOS Video app THERE ARE NO MOVIE OR TV NAMES!!!

  • Screen ipad doesn't respond during video viewing home sharing with multiple iOS devices simultaneously

A have a problem with the videos app and iTunes home sharing on multiple iOS devices.
This is my setup. On my iMac 2006 with Snow Leopard I have:
    - 100+ dvd's ripped in my iTunes movie section
    - 600+ episodes ripped in iTunes TV-section in 35 TV-shows
    - 1 apple tv, 1 iPad 2, 1 iPad mini
On an average evening my family is watching different tv-shows simultaneously on the apple tv, the ipad, an iphone, and an ipad mini.
This is done through home sharing on the one iTunes library.
    All updated apps, software etc..
What happens on the ipads, after viewing for more than 10 minutes, the user interface doesn't show up when tapping the screen. The touchscreen doesn't respond, only the home button works. Clicking the home button closes the app, but the sound of the video keeps on playing. Opening up the videos app again gives a black screen with sound still playing and still no button or UI.
The only workaround which currently works is killing the videos app. Power off the ipad and power on again, reconnect to the shared library, wait until it has found all the content (1+ minutes) and startup the tv show again.
All in all, a nasty way to pause your viewing or switching to another movie of tv episode, or even wanting to finish viewing.
The problem has haunted me for a year now, patiently waiting and hoping software-updates would fix it. They didn't.
A fix would obviously hugely improve my user experience, getting it on par with Apples usual quality of service.
Anyone familiar with this problem? Apple: is it possible to fix it in an update?

Same here for over a year now.
You cant imagine how happy i am that im not the only one with this problem.
many of frinds have the same setup as me (ipad 2, 27"imac, express, apple tv 2)
    No problem
I had the problem on Snow Leopard, lion and now on mountain lion.
I'am also starting to get a new problem - sometimes when waching a movie on iPad or ATV it just quits the movie and you have to start it again
on the iPad most of the time it also shows the wrong cover art. I tried all the hints here, and i works for a day or two then its wrong again
I store my itunes library on an external drive - you ???

  • Does home sharing work between iOS devices

Or is it only from a mac or pc to an ios device.

    HI there,
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Is there any way to save a library from an old device after it's shown up using home sharing to a new device?

Just as the title says. I don't want to use a USB stick to transfer every single song so that it'll save on my new laptop's iTunes. I think Home Sharing only works at home, right? So if I bring my laptop anywhere, then I don't have any of my music anymore.

    Hi Kokomeeps,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
You can actually import the music from one iTunes library on a computer to another using Home Sharing and all of your music will actually be located on both machines. Please use the following article as a guide to set up Home Sharing to import your music from one computer to another.

  • Since ios 7.0 I have been unable to use home sharing on my iPad v3 and iPhone 4S.

With ios 6, I was able to watch movies and listen to music on my iPad and iPhone streaming form my Windows 8.1 computer running iTunes 11.1.2.31.  Now with ios 7 (currently runing 7.0.3 on both iPhone 4S and iPad v3) I can'd do this.  Home sharing appears to time out after 30+ minutes.  If you hit Cancel during any point, then click on the shared library again, you get a "Unable to turn on Home Sharing" error message.  Both iPhone and iPad react exactly the same.  However, my Apple TVs are working just fine and can view video or listen to audio with no difficulty.  I have tried turning off home sharing, library sharing, deauthorizing the computer, closing iTunes, re-opening iTunes, the re-enabling everything, but no progress has been made.
Anyone have a suggetion on how to fix this?

To add to this, I discovered that my iTouch works just fine with Home Sharing.  It is running ios 5.1.1.  Seems this is an ios 7 specific problem on the iPhone and iPad.

  • Is there a way for multiple users to connect to my home sharing with their iOS device to select music to stream to my A/V receiver jukebox style?

I have an A/V receiver that I can connect to and select music to stream over my network but I want to know if I have a party if it's possible for multiple users to have access on their own devices to my home shared music and select music to play like a jukebox.

I almost forgot that using folders can allow each folder to contain a song. I also recall touch tracks or one key play...

  • HT3819 I am a teacher. I have an iPhone and iPad for personal use.  I also have an iPod and now an iPad for school use.  Would it be best for me to use home sharing on all 4 devices, or should I split my account and have separate accounts for home & schoo

My first i device was an iPod touch that I was given for use in my classroom.  Then I got an iPhone for personal use.  Both items are listed under the same username and account.  Since then I now have 2 iPads, one for home and one for work.  I have many apps that are only for work like Math Zombie and Science Facts, and many that are for personal use, like Facebook and YouVersion.  I know that I can synch each device and tell iTunes which apps go on which device.  However at home I use a Mac, and my school computer is a PC.  I am wondering if I should split my account and keep personal separate from work.  Then I can synch all school related devices on the PC and home devices on the Mac.  I realize that there maybe the rare occaision that I might want one app for both accounts.  That's the chance I take on splitting my account.  Are there ay benefits one way or the other?

Will you be the person paying for apps on both accounts?
Are you the only person that will use both of the iPads?
Is there a chance students will be using the work iPad and if so, do you want personal data stored on it?
If you're the only one using it I'd keep the same account just to have the flexibility of having access to everything on all devices. If your students will be using it or if the school is paying for the school apps I'd keep separate accounts. It all depends on how often you will use school apps from home, and home apps at school. Just some things to consider...

  • Unable to drag and drop mp4 movies into itunes but the file will import and play using home sharing

Strange problem with my brothers MacBook.
The movie files were converted to mp4 format ready to be played on an iphone and I imported them into my iTunes on an iMac with no problems.
Files were also saved onto a flash drive which I passed on to my brother.
My brother was unable to import files by drag and drop and also by "add to library", we even copied and pasted files from the flash drive to the desktop but that also didn't work.
Using "home sharing the movies imported and played with no problems.
Any ideas why this is happening?

This appears to be a long-standing bug:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634720
and the accepted workaround is stated in comment 11.
Oddly, it's possible to do the reverse, i.e. drag multiple eml files from Explorer to a TB folder.

  • Right management: How many devices can share a certain piece of music when using Home Sharing?

Considering a family of 4, each of us having between 2 and 3 devices. Can all of them use music through Home Sharing or is the limit of 5 applying?
    Thanks

A maximum of five computers can use Home Sharing at one time. If this limit has been reached and you want to add a new Home Share, deauthorize one or more computers by choosing Deauthorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes. For more information about authorization and deauthorization, see About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization.
Supposedly, you can use Home Sharing with as many iOS devices as you want on your network.

  • HT4557 We have a wired in network in our house, we also have an apple airport for use with my ipad/our ipods/iphones, etc.  Can we use home sharing if our desktops do not have wifi?

    Hi,
this is my first time on the support board, so hopefully I'm doing this correctly.  We have 3 desktop computers in our family, which are wired in with ethernet cables.  We also use the cables with our laptops (we have various connections throughout the house)  I have an iphone, and an ipad, my boys have ipod touches.  I purchased an airport router to use when I'm using my ipad, etc.  The boys and I would like to be able to share apps that we have purchased.  I'm wondering if there is a way to use home sharing in our situation.
    thanks!

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • How do I share my iTunes library to an iPad without using "Home Sharing"?

I have set up my iTunes library to be shared with others over our home network.  This is the "Share your library" option, and NOT "Home Sharing" since my wife has her own Apple ID and I, unfortunatly, have 2.  She was wanting to listen to our music on her iPad but could not figure out how to access the shared library.  The "Music" app (click more, select library) only seems to work for Home Shared libraries.  (In fact, I had tried Home Sharing first and when I turned it off, all of the buttons at the bottom of the Music app's screen disappeared - note:  she has no music stored on the iPad.)
So, how can an iPad access a shared iTunes music library without using Home Sharing?
(iPad 2, iOS 6; Mac 10.8, iTunes 10 because 11 totally inhibits my ability to use my iPod the way I want.)

-> Home Sharing is different than logging into the iTunes store.
You enable Home Sharing using one AppleID. Doesn't matter which you use but all devices must use the same AppleID for Home Sharing.

  • I am trying to use home sharing with my computer and someone's ipad, will i still be able to transfer stuff in the library like it normally does on two computers

I want to share the library from my friend itunes to my computer but I am not using a computer to share I am using an iPad 2. Am I still going to be able to transfer the library from the iPad to my computer

    Hi ashleymartinsmith!
I have an article for you that may help you understand Home Sharing a little better:

  • HT3819 I can use remote on my iPhone to connect with my iTunes library, but i can't connect to another computer using home sharing to access apple tv.  I have used the same access ID and password that is used for the apple tv.

I can use the Remote app on my iphone to connect with my itunes library on my computer, but I can't connect to the Apple TV using home sharing with another computer in the house.  I am using the same ID and password that the apple tv uses to connect with the other computer.  Also how do I check what version of IOS that my iphone is using?

    Version:
iOS Settings>General About (or it'll say when you hook it up to iTunes)
Are all the devices on the same physical network?  I think you're saying all are set up using the same home sharing credentials.
If you've not done so restart all devices and your router.
If you can get any of the devices connected by ethernet to reduce the wifi burden that may help but to be honest I would not expect simply beoing on wifi to prevent devices/computers appearing in the list.
Does the other computer have any firewall or port blocking software running?
