Unable to use PE9 with my Canon 5D Mark III

I could use some help please.  When I try to download my new Canon 5D Mark III Raw into PE9 I get an error message telling me that PE is unable to open it because it is the wrong file type.  My new Canon 5D Mark III lists the file type as ST8Axxxx instead of the normal IMG_xxxx that I'm used to.  Can anyone tell me how to use PE9 with my Canon 5D Mark III camera?  Thank you!

Hi,
The 5D MK III is not supported by PSE 9. It requires ACR 6.7 or 7.1 which will not apply to PSE 9.
You can either :-
1) Update to a newer version of elements
2) Use the Canon software to covert the raw files to TIF files and then import the TIF files
3) Download and install the free Adobe DNG Converter. Convert the raw files to DNG files and then import the DNG files into elements.
You can obtain latest dng converter from:
mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh
windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
Hope it helps

  • Help with focus on Canon 5d mark iii

the answer to my question is probably pitifully obvious so i acknowledge my limits
I'm having a terrible time focusing with my canon 5d mark iii.  i primarily use a 35mm 1.4L and an 85mm 1.2L, and use back button focus with ai servo mode.  i also usually manually select a single focus square.
its a bit bizarre, but there are days where i constantly nail focus, but then there are days when i miss on 85% of my shots, but i dont think anything is changing (settings) between the shots.  the problem arises across a broad aperture range (meaning its not only if shooting at 1.2 or 1.4i don't understand what is happening, and hope someone can help.
the problem arises with both stationary and moving targets.
i would greatly appreciate if someone could help me understand how to improve.  some questions include:
    1.  is it possible there's a flaw with the camera itself?
    2.  how do i best use back button focus?  should i, for exe, hold down the focus button constantly, or only depress it long enough to focus, release, then snap?  what about for moving subjects?
    3.  should i be using a different auto focus mode?
    greatly appreciate the help.

You should use "one shot" focus when your subject distance is not changing.  You should use "AI Servo" when your subject distance is changing.
Canon doesn't actually recommend just leaving the camera in "AI Servo" mode (it seems like it would be a good catch-all focus mode, but they claim it's not.)  The issue with "AI Servo" is that the camera actually expects that the subject actually is changing distance and it's trying to evaluate that in order to use predictive focus.  When it turns out the subject is not really moving, they claim it can throw the camera focus accuracy.
When using back-button focus you can press and release the button at will.  That's actually the point of it... it was created for situations when you're tracking a subject, suddenly a distancting object enters the frame and you do not want the camera to switch focus to that other object... but then the object passes out of frame and you want to resume focus on your original subject.  So you could press-and-hold... and when the distraction shows up in frame just let go... until it's passed and then you can press-and-hold again to resume AI servo focus.
The 5D III has an amazing focus system.
Canon does have a great guide explaining how it works and how to adjust settings and tune it in great detail.  You can find it here:  http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2012/1dx_guidebook.shtml
This same guide is titled for the 1D X but if you read the intro they explain that it's really for both the 1D X and the 5D III which have nearly identical focus systems.
There's a PDF in the lower-left area of that page that you'll want to download -- which is the 47 page guide on the focus system.

  • Lightroom 3, CS5 & Canon 5D Mark III Issues

I have read the product support and am I right in understanding the you need camera raw 7 to import RAW files into Lightroom with the Canon 5D Mark III?  And that this is not supported with CS5?  I am unable to import RAW files into Lightroom 3.  I use a Mac OSX platform.  Please help...

You need ACR 7.1 or LR 4.1 to open 5D M3 raws...either that or download the free DNG Converter 7.1 and convert to DNG so LR 3.x will read them.

  • Canon 5D Mark iii dropped frames

I have had dropped frame issues with my Canon 5D Mark iii on playback in the camera.  I just bougth it so I sent it back and the second one was doing the same thing not as bad.  I tried 4 different SD card all 32 gb 44 MB/s.  For the third camera I will be getting I bought a 32 gb SD card and 95 MB/s to see if that makes a difference.  I called Cannon to sk them what the problem could be and they said it could be the card or it could be the 24-105 mm lens IS and try shotting the video witht he IS off and then on.  I was also told there is no way it could be the lens it's either the cameras or the card.  I am getting really frustrated as to why this keeps happening.  I am also shooting in 24 fps and 30 fps.  The last camera was dropping frames and overheating and the joystick was difficult to use and only worked every so often.  Has anyone else had any of these issues?

    Hi WC!
Thanks for posting on the forum.
It is very likely that the issue is with the cards you have tried and not the camera.
You mentioned that you were going to try a faster card.
Were you able to do so yet?
If so, how did the faster card perform?
Do you experience the same issue when recording to a high-speed CF card instead of an SD card?

I just bought the canon 5d mark iii and my photoshop elements 10 won't read my raw files. I want to buy photoshop elements 13 but want to make sure my camera is compatible with it first. Thank you for your help!

Photoshop elements 10 should be able to open those files if you update to camera raw 6.7
Which operating system are you using?
    windows
Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Windows : Camera Raw 6.7 update for Elements 10
    mac
Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Macintosh : Camera Raw 6.7 update for Elements 10
Also, photoshop elements 13 will open those files as well.

  • Canon 5d mark iii camera raw files with CS3

Hi, I recently bought a Canon 5d mark iii camera and am having difficulty viewing the raw files on my Mac. The Mac operating software is 10.5.8 and the mac doesnt have intel. Photoshop software is CS3. I have looked at various plug ins but am struggling to find one that will work. Is there no option to me other than buying a new laptop with the latest photoshop or is there a workaround?  Thanks in advance for your help, Mike

    Here's the bottom line:
You will never be able to open the image files from your Canon 5d mark III directly in CS3, because that camera model was first supported in Camera Raw 6.7 (which only works with CS5) and 7.1 which only works with CS6.
However, you can download the free Adobe DNG Converter 7.1 and convert your Canon raw files to raw DNGs that you can open with any version of ACR starting with ACR 2.4, which takes you all the way back to CS1.  Therefore, you'll be able to open them in CS3 with no problem.
Get the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter, it is a stand-alone application that is not tied to whatever version of Photoshop you happen to use.  The current version is 7.1 and there's also a beta version 7.2RC1.
Yes, if you can afford a Canon 5D Mark III, you can afford to upgrade from CS3 to CS6 for very little money ($199 for a perpetual license) if you act fast.  CS3 will be out of the upgrade loop in late December or so.
I'm one of the many to whom the prospect of buying into Adobe's subscription mode and end up paying the Adobe tribute every month for life seems nothing less than repulsive.
With that camera (a rich man's camera) is silly to be using a laptop (a beggar's machine).  Get a decent desktop Mac or PC already!

  • Will Canon 5d Mark III Raw files work with Lightroom 3

I have just tried to upload Raw files from a Canon 5d Mark III to Lightroom 3.  The file were not recognised.  I believe there were some update issues but my Lightroom 3 is updated.  Do I need to get Lightroom 4?  I need to know urgently as I have a shoot tomorrow and will go back to my Mrk II if I can't get an update for Lightroom 3.

    LR3 DOES NOT support Canon 5D3, 1Dx, Nikon D800 or Nikon D4.
Newer cameras wont work in it, and require LR4 for RAW processing (Tethering in LR4 STILL is not supported)
    However,
LR4 is massively buggy, and slow to a point where it is practically unuseable for anything other than a handful of images to edit.
Also, LR4 will not tether to the new cameras (for that, try ANY of the competing professional software, Aperture, Capture One - They work just fine)
You can, convert your 5D3 files to DMG, and then open them in LR3 that way, or you can get LR4 and deal with it's massively awful slow issues that Adobe has still not resolved 5.5 months after launch, or you can use other software.
    Those are your options.

  • Canon 5D Mark III back screen is dead after tethered capture with Lightroom 4.3

I was successfully shooting tethered using Lightroom 4.3 (PC laptop with Windows 7) and my Canon 5D Mark III, however when I disconnected the cable I was no longer able to see anything on the back of the camera, no image playback, no menu, no live view, nothing.  How do I recover the functionality of the camera's back screen.  I tried removing the battery for a while, replacing the battery, taking out the memory card.  Don't know how to "reset" the camera.  Note the top display on the camera and the view finder display work fine, I can change settings with my dials.  Was working in Manual Exposure mode, and also tried Aperture Priority.  If I reconnect to the laptop I can still work in tethered mode, but after disconnecting the camera back is still dead.
Was I somehow supposed to disconnect the camera from tethered capture before disconnecting the cable?

It is probably not related to your tethering session in Lightroom. It is also unlikely to be related to the order you unplugged things. (Unless you yanked the cable and damaged some electronics).
Have you tried pulling both batteries for 30 minutes (The regular battery and the quarter-sized watch battery)?  Pull those and the memory card. Unplug all cables and let it sit for a while and then replace the batteries.

  • I tested my new Canon 5D Mark iii with my 85 1.2 L lens. The images look terrible! What gives?

I just purchased a new Canon 5D Mark iii body. It is replacing my 1Ds Mark ii. I tested it with my 85 1.2 L series lens. I took the RAW images into Capture One 7 to look at them. I was highly disturbed at what I saw. The quality was no where near my Canon 1Ds Mark ii. The images seemed somewhat soft even after applying a consderable amount of sharpening. They also looked flat and lifeless, even after pumping the contrast and adding Clarity. All in all they looked terrible! I must have something wrong, as I have read countless times that the new chip gives incredible results.
When first attempting to set up my camera I set it to Adobe RGB and for RAW images only. I noticed that you seemed forced into deciding on a specific "Picture Style". I left it on the default settting of "Standard". Should that effect my RAW files, or is that bypassed altogether when shooting RAW? I noticed that in "Standard" mode that some in camera sharpening was applied to the files. Is that my problem? Should that be turned down to zero, as I would normally do all my sharpening afterward either in Capture One 7 or other software. I shot all my test images with fast shutter speeds so that is not the issue. This lens is in perfect condition and has always produced incredibly sharp contrasty images. What on earth could be wrong? Any suggestions? I am a professional shooter for the last 20 years, so this is really perplexing me! Help!!!

    Hi Corey,
Picture styles are ONLY applied to JPEG images or video.  They are never applied to RAW.  Canon will "tag" the meta-data of the image indicating picture style choices so that desktop processing software that understands those choices can apply it after-the-fact.  But the point of "RAW" is that the camera will not perform any change to the image which would result in a loss of original data.
As for the soft focus... the good news there is probably nothing wrong with your camera or your lens.  It probably just needs a slight focus calibration adjustment (you don't even need to send it in for this.)
The camera sensor is analogous to a movie screen.  If the image is blurry... it's not the movie screen... it's the movie projector (or the focus).  However... keeping with that analogy... suppose we focused the image perfectly... but then moved the project a foot closer to the screen.  The result would be a slightly out-of-focus image even though there is actually nothing wrong with the projector.
The phase detect focus sensors are on the floor of your camera.  When the reflex mirror is down, some light is bounced down into those sensors to focus the image.  The distance to the AF sensors vs. the distance to the real sensor is supposed to be calibrated to match... but it's actually possible for the AF sensors to think the image is focused when it's really slightly out of focus on the sensor.  For this reason, your camera has auto-focus micro-adjustment capability -- in other words this is something you can test and tune yourself.  The REASON you might do it yourself is because it turns out it can be different for every lens (even two EF 85mm f/1.2L lenses in a row might have slightly different focus).  This adjustment is only available on the mid-range and pro bodies -- it's part of the reason you buy a premium body.  The camera can actually remember the AF adjustment for each lens uniquely.
    See this article:  http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/12/this-lens-is-soft-and-other-myths
    Or this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/are_your_pictures_out_of_focus.shtml
BTW, to test the lens, I'd suggest getting a focus calibration target.  You want controlled conditions when you do this -- don't shoot typical everday subjects because it wont be precise enough.
I use a DataColor Spyder "LensCal".   The LensAlign products are also popular.
